Roger, I found this video of particular interest as you recommended this very guitar to me last summer and I took your advice....I don't know what the guitar sounded like out of the box but it sounds great now and I'm pleased I bought it.....Also, glad I connected with you....You're clearly a very special guy.....

I agree 100%! I have been buying the lower priced "Dirty 30's " model 7 series. The OOO and the single O parlor models, and with some setup work, these low cost guitars sound great!

I paid 700 for a 2012 RK, ROS627, its a 12 fretter that looks just like a 32 Martin OM28. The V profile neck was hand made complete with the head stock flute. Solid Rosewood/Sitka with ebony fret board and bridge,,,, but the braces were also scalloped so it sounds beautiful just like the Martin.

Great video thanks. I do setups on my guitars and totally agree most need a setup, truss rod, saddle and usually a few high frets. I have the RK single O and it is a fabulous guitar, very loud and has that vintage small guitar tonality. I have wanted a keeper OOO for ages but I have found them a bit wimpy and anemic compared to a dreadnought. I have owned several Eastman OMs but they didn't do it for me. This RK sounds super loud and responsive.

Excellent sound and that's certainly a reason to shop there! I've picked up poor playing higher end Gibson J45s or Martin's at my local guitar center, more than once. Also not set up, with old strings and most importantly dried out.
Back in the day, you always got a free set up and at least a gig bag if not a hardshell case. Most instrument shops don't even carry cases in store.

Wow! I'd buy a guitar off you anytime, if I was anywhere near you! I wish you'd do what you've done, to my RK mandolin, which I love dearly, but it came without a setup and I had to do it myself, having no knowledge other than a good ear. That guitar sounds a treat after you've set it up and it's still brand new, so it'll grow and blossom over time.

Those Recording King guitars are tasteful recreations of the old designs, as are Loar guitars - supposedly made in the same factory? They are both notorious for needed fret and nut work, however, which can easily cost $150-200, unless you do it yourself. But even if you pay to have a tech do the work for you, it's so worth it in the long run. Cheers from Portland, Oregon!

I just got an RD-328 that responded to a setup in the same way. I bought the RD-328 with the thick finish as I live in Tucson (dry) and we use AC a lot. Dried out guitars are a problem. This RD-328 will be my outside guitar. One I know has more tolerance to low humidity than my Martin D16E.

    - but i wish the cdn shop that sold me the tricone actually bothered to set up the action properly with a lower more easy to play action going up the fretboard as i play fingerstyle only and not slide - i see now your shop would have done so

Don't know about anyone else but my Martin DCPA needed extensive work when I purchase it brand new in a case. Retail shops don't get enough credit for all they do before and after the sale. Had I purchased my Martin through a local retail store I would have probably paid more for it but they wouldn't have let it go out like that.

I bought a Recording King Dirty 30's ROC-9-TS a few years ago and I've yet to do any tweeking but I play the thing out at gigs and though the action is a bit high it hasn't bothered me enough to do something about it. I'm about to purchase a Recording King Tonewood Reserve Koa 12 fret 000. I suspect I'm gonna love this one as well. Another guitar. Just bought a Gretsch Electromatic in two-tone Sea Foam Green (that's what I call it. Don't remember what they call it) and it's a beauty. Guitars sometimes are better than friends...

Great playing and awesome sounding guitar for the money! Shows also the importance of good setup. If I may ask how low did you set the action on this guitar? Can it go to 2mm on the low E (no capo)? Also which strings did you use? Can it still ring nice with .011's?

    • @BrickhouseGuitarsKitchener
      @BrickhouseGuitarsKitchener  ปีที่แล้ว +2

The string height would be in the area of 2.5 on the bass side and 2.00 on the treble side at the 12th fret. .011 gauge with a truss rod tweak should be no real problem as long as you are not a heavy handed player. Cheers,

Depends what is causing it. Frets might need to be leveled. If the frets themselves are nice and level, then it could just need the truss rod to be adjusted. Possible might need a shim below the saddle if the saddle is too low (or just replace the saddle). If the nut slots are cut too deep, might need a new nut.

My average prep time is around an hour. Some take less and some take a bit more, but your point is well taken.

It’s included in their pricing. I bought the dreadnaught version of this guitar from Roger and is amazing l. Great value and sound for the money. All solid wood bone nut and saddle and he restrings the guitar with high end d’darrios

Honestly, by the time you start doing a major "forensic" set up, wouldn't you just be better off buying a better guitar? Plus... all that Chinese glue smells funny...

Is it just me or did that guitar nearly morph into a harmonica ?
