Petu the kind of guy saying "I'm going to teach you how to climb by not doing anything fancy. We are going to take a recall here and purchase the standa... WAIT, how about we bust out the FÖRBIDDEN *insert item here* technology."
I'm confident these kind of videos are quite helpful for many players, but as some youtubers have recently been pointing out: they still assume a lot of basal knowledge that a lot of people in silver or even gold just don't have. If you don't say why you freeze the wave (to deny farm and xp to the enemy laner, and leave them open for ganks/all ins) players will not know when and why to freeze. Same with knowing when you are stronger and when you can walk up to harass. As a challenger player you'll have a lot of unconscious instincts that support your confidence to take a certain trade, make decisions on when to back and when to stay. I think you're a very good teacher and I've personally learnt a lot from you, but I think stomping low elo lobbies is not the most effective way to teach (though it is still educative, and quite entertaining). When you're ahead in the first 5 minutes it's just not that representative of a silver elo game anymore for example. I think if you really want to teach low elo players you should do some videos on low level fundamentals, or perhaps do VOD reviews of and especially with low elo players to get their perspective and help them (and subsequently the viewers) see where their reasoning is correct and wrong. I also think that, though often correct, taking ignite and being very aggressive is something a lot of players are not gonna be comfortable with if they're not confident in keeping track of so many other factors. Maybe in the future you could do some voice over commentary (or full on VOD review) of games that you won by playing solid fundamentals and trying to pick apart why you are making certain decisions, even if you didn't make them actively at the time. Hope this commentary is constructive. Keep on making awesome content! xx
Yeah, I was thinking this same thing...and honestly I feel like his past versions of this video were a lot heavier on the analytic/didactic. This one felt like he started to explain some ideas in the beginning of the silver game, but then sort of gave up and just played 5 straightforward games which were fun, and as didactic as watching any great player play, but definitely didn't register as a "guide" in the way past installments did.
Speaking as a bronze player, its honestly the opposite. I can have all the game sense in the world, wave managment, macro etc. but the mechanics displayed in this vod at silver are already so far beyond what i could ever pull off. It's always a bit disheartening that everyone focuses on teaching macro, when it's mechanics thats holding me back.
@@nuclearjasper9523 It's really hard for any player to connect with people who lack something that they themselves do unconsciously. It's like trying to explain how to ride a bike or a car. I think especially for mechanics it's a case of simply playing a lot of games and becoming confident with the controls of the game and the champs you play. You can try to expedite the process by focusing on single elements in either training mode or normal games. For example, spending an entire bot game farming as well as you can every time before you start a session will help you learn csing a lot quicker than having to mentally juggle that with a human opponent, junglers, etc. Another good exercise I've come across is playing some ARAM games where you specifically focus on dodging as many skill shots as possible. If I want to learn a new champ I hop into a game with 5 intermediate bots. They'll harass you well enough in lane and if you run the game long enough you'll find out what your champ can and cannot do in a 1v5. Mechanics are probably the hardest thing to teach someone. It's often a case of figuring it out yourself, and the most people can do is give you pointers and tips to pratice.
Very good points, and I agree! A lot of old players who kinda just grew up in solo queue lobbies, playing the game back in the day, kinda just take their ambient knowledge for granted. Things that we kinda just had to throw at a wall and see what stuck is more or less a defined gamestate these days. There weren't many coaches or guides, just people seeing what worked and telling their friends.
THE FIRST TIME I see this series it was in 2022 where I was stucked in silver. Now I'm platinum 2 and im still improving! The xPetu shen gameplay and mentality can be apply and multiple top lane champions. ENJOY YOUR CLIMBING, BOYS!
Great video, lots of little nuggets in here. I don't play Shen, but one thing that's invaluable is how clearly you demonstrate your mastery of matchups. You really understand how your opponent's kit works and what they're looking to do and how you can mitigate that. This is the secret sauce a lot of people are missing when they try the "you win by not dying" technique. They don't know how to not die, but that's how.
when i first started playing shen i lost all games i was bad and i stopped playign him, i remember one of my friends sent me one fo your videos and i started watching you and teh passion you put into your videos and the way you enjoy playing league made me love shen so much that i learned how to be a good at it, now i am proud of being a shen main and an xpetu enjoyer
Hi petu! In 3 months time i climbed from silver to emerald. Religiously rewatching the old how to climb videos! Thanks for the overload of great content lately and excited for binging this one 10 times 😂
took a lot longer to put a message but I learned from last time that watching a game on mute and thinking what I would do compared to what he does helps me understand where my thought process is flawed and then rewatching it w/ audio helps me understand more in depth why and how his decision making is better. (except the game with hullbreaker I don't have the guts to do that LMAO) love the content. thanks xpetu
Man i dont how to say, but this video helped me a lot. I enjoyed watching it ofc, but the crucial thing that you taught to me, is that i can mute the chat completely. I admit i'm way toxic and almost evry time i tilt after 1 game, but im trying to change that, i dont like being this person :D But when i used your tech, to put the chat on Premade only (tbh i didnt know its possible to do this) im more relaxed in games, i dont tilt that easily, and overall i can focus more on my own gameplay whitout worry that i get flamed. Ofc i didnt made it to diamond, only to bronze, but i feel like you helped me bcs i was stuck iron since 2018 when i started playing this game. So big thanks man, love you
@@sasukefaan I mean if you do what he's doing and don't overcomplicate the game for yourself then yeah you can win and climb fairly well and at a good pace. People make league sound like you need to be good at everything and play 10 different champs. If more players focused on 1-2 champs only, watched high elo replays for their champs, and practiced cs'ing they would climb so well. I just got diamond recently as ADC and I played mainly 1 champ and if that champ was banned or picked I played 1-2 backup champs. I focused on matchups and fundamentals, tracking the enemy jg based on where mine is and if they are showing on the same side or not, etc. It's still tough to do but a lot of low elo players seriously overcomplicate the game for themselves.
Damn my friend, this guide was extreamly helpfull. I'm not Shen main ( used to main him in 10 years ago lol ) nor top laner. Nowdays I'm mid laner and currently OTP Smolder, today I got autofilled ADC, but swapped with Morde cause he gave Darius 5 kills in first 6 minutes. Used some of your advices and wrecked Darius, he stood no chance against my mom and your advices :D
I would say Petu is showing you the GAMEPLAY on how to rank up with Shen. The basic things he assumes you know about is: 1) Warding and map awareness. One of these things gives you and your team information, the other one gives YOU information that will make you more useful to the team. They are not the same but they are symbiotic. Ward often and check your minimap often. Ping a laner/jungler when they appear for your own info, if not for your team mates. Its not always necessary to ping, but it keeps you in the habit of checking and noticing. 2) Understanding strengths and weaknesses. Just because Petu did it, doesnt mean itll work for you. Questions to ask yourself constantly are: Am I building correctly for my laner and enemy team? Does the enemy laner have an item advantage against me? Am I keeping up with CS? The enemies knowledge of the game and mechanics is always out of your control unless you happen to vs them frequently, so focus on what you do know, and play towards your strengths 3) Communication. Dont flame, turn chat off, and use the ping wheel effectively. It sucks you cant spam ping anymore, but I understand why they removed it. Communication is key, especially since no one uses VoIP in LoL regularly 4) Dont stress about losses. This will sound cheesy, but focus on having a "growth mindset". Even if you win a match, there is always something you could have done better. Its all about achieving and maintaining a consistent performance, then you can try to experiment and limit test with unfamiliar items/runes/summs etc. If you had a hard loss, take a break, watch some wholesome "just chatting" streams to clear your mind, then rewatch your vod. Sometimes you will know exactly where you messed up, but the great thing about LoL replays is that you can see where the entire enemy is, and get an idea of how they won and what they did right as well what you and your team did wrong.
Hello Petu, I am playing mobile version but I find this very informative. Now I am thinking to apply the "survive in laning" & "get farm" instead on building damage.

Your main objective is not to put yourself into a situation where you can die. Proceeds to 1v4 the enemy team lol! Great videos all in all, earned a like and a sub. You make me want to try ranked...almost.

I think most people say theyre hardstuck cuz their mmr is so bad they dont climb with 51% wr, so their mental goes down which makes them play worse, and get a negative winrate, rinse and repeat. I climbed on a new account from bronze to gold and I have got to gold 1, and started last season.
23:50, you aren't missing a shot that you dont even take. Overanalyzing with extreme proportion analogy but it's like saying you survived a car crash by not being in the car. You didn't take the shot: you didn't miss it. (btw amazing video, just finished the first game, going to try your tips in game!) Edit, about my analogy, someone could say that by choosing not to be in a car you think might crash, you technically survive the car crash, but it's not general. If a plane crashes somewhere I wouldn't even go, I didin't survive the crash. Idk if my thoughts make sense xD
I love how you do this Petu, you seriously are my Personal hero!!!
