Thanks for this mini series. We had exactly the same model, revision in my family during the 90s and this brought me so much memories. It was not the prettiest, not the fastest, but it was indestructible and reliable. We had it for 275.000 KM, and at the end, it still had its horse power. It was built to last. I'm sad our kids will never have the opportunity to witness the same level of quality and engineering anymore.

There is something magical about that sound of old non-common-rail, pure mechanical diesels. This rough sound makes it feel so robust and dependable. Unlike modern refined common-rails which sound almost the same as petrol direct injected. They are usually a lower displacement too (I have 1.4 CRDi). I mean, they are a lot smoother, but I'm not confident they will last as long as this old TD. But that's how capitalism works. Companies always try to find a way to make product cheaper yet still have some minimum expected performance and life. Now cars can last less than 8 years, but they are cheap enough you can buy new one every 6 years. In the past it was a lot harder to buy a car like this, but it served you for 20 years if you wanted. Many of those are on roads today. Also old mercs and Golf 2-3 is not uncommon to see.

DIMON1358 My Dad had one of those from 1992 to 2012... An india red metallic estate, 2.0l 115hp petrol engine, GL trim. Boy, do I have fond memories of that thing... While being butt ugly, it was an undestructable tank of a car. Got the familiy through various holiday trips to Italy, France, the UK, Spain... That car definitely saw the world! When I got my drivers license in 1998, I had my own share of adventures with that car. In the end it had over 360000 km on the clock with no major defects (an just a wee few minor ones) and no rust at all, when my dad finally got rid of it... Not because it finally broke down, but he just wanted a new car after 20 years! They don‘t build them like this anymore!

The BMW bottle caps look great on the old girl. Love the styling on these old Passat wagons. I miss black bumper trim and rub strips on cars. Very rare in the USA when new. Non-existent now. Would look great cleaned up
In had the same car from 1988. I drived 10 years and 600.000 km. On holidays on the campside, tot much smoke. So they make a small revision, only new Pistons and schraper rings. No more blues smoke and many more years of use. Also super economical.

Да! Был такой и именно красный и именно универсал. Надёжнее и дешевле в эксплуатации автомобиля я не видел. Бензин, мотор ABS. Купил за копейки. Что-то около 700$ из живого были - салон и кузов без единого следа коррозии в родной уже облезающей краске (и фары родные даже корректор работал) вложил ещё баксов 500 (мотор, ходовка, выхлоп полностью, сцепа, полиуретановые сайленты... и по мелочи)... И всё - расходы кончились. Потом только ездил пока не продал))) Потом пожалел тысячу раз - пусть бы просто стоял. Но когда надо что-то оттащить, выехать в ебеня - была бы машина, на которой встань хоть в жопе мира - есть все запчасти, чинится молотком и разводным ключом, в салоне места - хоть жопой жуй и тёплая что хоть в Сибирь!

I owned such a Passat in the 90s. When I look at this, I remember - it was a car with no problems. Everything mechanical, no electronics. What for? Never needed a garage. You can repair everything yourself. Needs 5-6 liters of diesel. VW should remember which quality cars they had built in the past.

Man regular unsealed wheel bearings are great, so easy to grease or replace. The new sealed ones just suck. Also it's refreshing to watch your videos, you say so much without saying a word. No blabbing needed to entertain.

VW Passat B3 Is strange car. Yesterday I change my 1991 B3 1.9 Diesel Exhaust! It was good for 29 Years! I use ceramic paste for bolts and nuts. It makes a lot of difference If a lot of time is passed. The copper paste is good too but ceramic lasts longer with time. It is sad how much damage can salt cause for metal. У меня были такие пассаты , аж три штуки. Две бензинки и один дизель 1.9 тд. Сейчас т-4 с двигателем от пассата 1.9тд. Машина шикардос.

VW Passat B3 Is strange car. Yesterday I change my 1991 B3 1.9 Diesel Exhaust! It was good for 29 Years! I use ceramic paste for bolts and nuts. It makes a lot of difference If a lot of time is passed. The copper paste is good too but ceramic lasts longer with time. It is sad how much damage can salt cause for metal.
