    The 600 BDC Reticle model is for the 223 Remington/ 5.56 cartridge if anyone is interested. Nikon has stopped making rifle scopes for about 3 years now. You can still find used or new in the box scopes if you research and are patient. I find them on Ebay frequently.

    I'm new to long distance shooting. Would I rotate the turret to the correct yardage then use the circles in the reticle? or are both not used?

    • @scottpm63
      @scottpm63  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You only use the elevation dial to sight in. After that you use only the circles.

    Hi Scott, could you please clarify the terms Target distance and Zero distance? Great tutorial. Thank you.

    • @sjbelaire67
      @sjbelaire67 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Target distance is the distance to the target down range you are shooting. Zero distance is what distance you want to zero your rifle. Basically the app will tell you to zero high or low based on these factors. For example, I zero at 200 yards using a 100 yard target. By entering this information in the SpotOn application, it tells me to zero my 30-06 2.13 inches high when shooting a 100 yard target for zero at 200 yards.

  • @ezskanken
    @ezskanken 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So what do you do when you plug in all the info for where you practice, but where you hunt everything will be different. Not knowing what the weather will do, how does one go about setting up their chart so they can go out and still be confident in putting a billet where it belongs.

    • @scottpm63
      @scottpm63  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simply set up a chart for your hunting as close to the actua conditions as you can. You will have experience with the BDC reticle and how it works for target shooting so your confidence should be high in the hunting situation.

    I have been using SpotOn from the Nikon web site for the last 9 months from a Mac 10.6.8 and Windows 7 computer. The program appears to have numerous bugs and I have been unable to match my actual ballistics with its predicted points of impact. A good example of one of the bugs is when you are in the "Graph Trajectory Screen" if you enter a new bullet weight for "Load B" or "Load C" it has no effect when you push the "Show Graph" button. Push the button at the bottom of the page to send them a comment. After you type your comment on their form and push send button you will get an error message that your mail system is setup wrong. Too bad Nikon can not get this to work, their optics are outstanding but you will not be able to use their ballistic marks unless you go to a range and record their spread at every 100yds.

    You have to take all that information as guess. It just gives you some where to start. Only way to really learn your scope, caliber and rifle is to shoot it and keep a journal. Find the ammo that groups the best at 100 yards shooting off a fixed rest then stick to that ammo. Then you have to shoot shoot shoot at different yardages and log all your information then you will have good information on your BDC in your scope.

    very good video , but one thing I can never get is what do they mean by "hold over" and focal plain ?

    • @scottpm63
      @scottpm63  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James. Holdover is simply how far over the intended point of impact you have to aim the center of the cross hair for the bullet to hit the target. If you sighted in your scope for 100 yards and are shooting at 100 yards your holdover is zero. You hold the crosshair dead on where you want to hit. If you sighted in at 100 yards and are shooting at 200 yards, to will have to aim the cross hair above your target about 3" (depending on caliber you shoot) for the bullet to drop into the target. That 3" is 'holdover'. The BDC reticle is intended to take the guess work out of how far to holdover at different ranges.
      Focal plane: Most scopes are second focal plane. That simply means the reticle (cross hair) does not change in size with changes in magnification. First (or 'front') focal plane scopes reticle do change size with the change in magnification. The advantage of a first focal plane scope is that the holdover values for the BDC, mil-dot or other tactical reticles stay consistent throughout the magnification range. On second focal plane scopes the holdover values change with change in magnification. However, First focal plane scopes tend to be a fair amount more expensive to manufacture which is the main reason most scopes are second focal plane.

      ok... the part I was confused on was the numbers and the magnifications charts 4x -16x the BDC field chart what are you suppose to do with 4x BDC-1 at 399 yards , I didnt word that very good

    • @scottpm63
      @scottpm63  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James,
      The BDC1 is the first circle below the crosshair, and the 4x is the scope set to 4 power. So, if your scope is set to 4 power the first circle (BDC1) represents 399 yards. So if you had a shot of about 400 yards you would use the first circle. The second circle (BDC2) is 629 yards, and so on. For such long shots you would never use 4x because the target would look too small. If you notice at 14x you would use the third circle (BDC3) and it too is 399 yards. Obviously that would be a much better magnification for a long shot.

    • @jamesmorrison185
      @jamesmorrison185 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, I thought that would shoot like 20 inches high and you would have to click the scope up and thought well thats a pain

    My kids bought me a Browning BAR 300 WSM and a Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10 BDC. I am unsure of the usefulness of this scope for my shooting. I typically shoot at deer less than 250 yards. Can I use the SpotOn program and the lower sighting circles for say: 50, 75,100,150,200 and 250? If not, I don't see how I can make use of the multiple aiming points.

    • @scottpm63

      The BDC reticle is a function of sight in distance and the bullets drop. Unfortunately it can not be calibrated as you would like.

      @@scottpm63 What? I can't change the point of impact from 100 yards to 150, 200 or 250? If my point of impact is 200 yards at the cross-hairs then my next poi would be 250, 300, 350? Right? 50 yards for each line crossing the vertical line?

    Whatever your hunting is never going to be standing at these distances!! What about the in between distances, how do you compensated for that?

    • @scottpm63
      @scottpm63  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The BDC reticle is meant to give you a close approximation to the holdover required. If you use the 300 yard holdover on a 327 yard shot you will be low by less than an inch with most calibers. It's better than simply guessing the holdover with standard cross hairs and plenty accurate enough for a kill shot on large game animals.

    • @levimontoya1973
      @levimontoya1973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You get out and shoot some more. You learn what your holdovers are for "in between" distances. OR the alternative, get out of your stand/hide, get within the ranges you're comfortable at. Don't take a shot you are unsure of EVER. Unless you're some rich dude that pays guides to do all the work anyways, then just listen to them.

    • @MidwestHunters1969

      Go to the range and "proof" your own rifle/ammo combo. The second circle on my 6.5 will be different than the 2nd circle on say, your 270.
      Once you shoot your rig at different yardages you'll know your specific drop for each circle.

    OK, I bought a Nikon 4x12x40 Buck Master II ! Exactly what caliber and Ammo is this Scope Calibrated with? Obviously not a 5.56/223! The videos show that once zeroed in the next circle down is a even yardage and so on for all 4 circles? I installed the program into my phone and with the information input the scope is no where accurate for longer distances!!! As far as I'm concerned this Scope is a piece of junk as it isn't accurate as advertised!!!! I put it in a box, placed it on my garbage shelf and bought a Weaver Kaspa 4x16x44 with a 1/8"click at 100 yards! It is a nail driver, and the Nikon doesn't even come close as Nikon has a 1/4" click therefore the Weaver is a better accurate scope!!!!!! MY OPINION

      ***** I have called them. Talked to a tech that said they will look into it. Considering that the software has been online for more than a year, I expected they would have better software. When I first used it I thought it was working ok but as I changed parameters like bullet type and Yards to Meters I noticed the ballistic data was not changed correctly. Nikon SpotOn has some major issues.
