I think the fish powder (Gyofun) is made by grinding up Bonito Flakes (Katsuobushi) in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.

There are some on sale on ebay. They are around $600 USD. Search for Ono Type 1 noodle machine.

Where can you get the dried fish powder? Is there a Japanese name I can ask about at the Japanese grocery store?
you can ask them "GYOFUN(魚粉)" or "DASHIKO(出汁粉)
So, we don't have to sift the sediment out from the soup after blending?
There is no need to strain the soup if you use a blender to stir it well :)
