I had secondary build for some time on Republique ... I had few fun battles , but about 90% with that build was bad ones , now I run classic sniper build on her , and she is made for that . (BTW Republique was my first T10 so I have experimented )

My US cruisers were all AA build and ruined CV's games if they decided to push the group I was protecting. It was a lot of fun for me back in the day. Definitely the kind of thing that "the spreadsheet" said was bad for CV players and helped caused the changes, but in mind was OK since I was sacrificing a lot of other things for that build and it was useless in a non-CV game. That being said a well played CV was still very strong, cross dropping and their active fighters all out at once was pretty fun to watch.
I like how pq used the phrase ' I finally Sniped A Carrier' LOL looks like he worked hard for that carrier game, he should have played in Asia server for CV's.
The problem with AA builds in this game just comes down to the fact that it makes you so much worse in "normal" situations. Especially when there's no carriers in your game. It's especially bad on battleships because their AA accuracy is so bad. Wargaming has specifically designed the game so that no AA is capable of defending a ship from a competent carrier. They'll always get at least one strike off. If not two. Doesn't help that AA mounts can be destroyed. So AA builds on battleships are just bad.
What you say doesn't make sense. If they worked the way you wanted, the CVs wouldn't do any harm. Shooting down planes is what counts, because squadrons end up pretty easy if you're not careful.
@@saladino8882 Clearly you didn't play the game prior to the 2018 rework. Back then, there were ships that had good enough AA to shoot down entire squadrons before the carrier could get a drop off. CVs had to think twice about attacking the likes of Montana or Moskva or Des Moines, and instead look for weaker targets. They required a brain to play. Not this mindless gameplay we have now where no ship is safe and can be abused for free.

I'm working on an AA Shimanto and it's working like a charm. It's maybe not Worcester levels of fly swatting, but for a t8 it's doing a fantastic job. My last round I got 36 planes just following some BBs around and smacking the CVs planes out of the air. And the build isn't even complete yet.
Finally someone did a AA build, her other half of combat instructions is literally better AA yet nobody is talking about it other than just mentioning. Yet every vid on maine is either main gun or survivability build which is covered to boredom.

it's damn amazing. I focused on CV and Johann De Witt's planes. They just melt and can't reach the target. (working not so good for t11 CVs. They don't care and just drop)
@@HomieMcBro Reminder that ASW planes also trigger that skill. That skill is basically another 10s cdr on MBRB even in matches without carriers. And the other 2 point skill is only 2 points, nothing wrong with spiting the carrier with it for only 2 points.
With the US mainline 0.66( 0.792% with flag) heal you get only about 3 full heals if you're primary taking pen damage due to them having standard 50% restoration of pen damage (compared to 75% of UK BB's or Pan American CL's)

11:00 You shouldn't focus your AA early, you don't get the burst damage for focusing your AA if you focus it to early or while the squad is in it's invulnerable period during an attack. Also yeah, CVs won't just throw their aircraft away against a target they don't think they can get damage against. Isn't much point throwing squad after squad after you to lose everything in a couple of minutes then be out of planes for the next 8+ minutes. The fact you were an AA build is likely what kept the CV away from you in game 1.
@@jaywerner8415 Fairly sure the AA ramping was removed at some point, at the very least It's completely unnoticeable even on full AA builds, so there is no benefit to having the sector set early, and that burst of damage is 3.5%-5% of the squads total HP applied to the entire squad, some squads yeah that's not gonna do much, others it's quite the chunk of damage. Ether way free damage is free damage. Ultimately you have 15 seconds of priority sector on a BB, starting your sector early just means that much LESS time the CV squad is taking the enhanced damage. Given AA is a DPS race against the squads HP pool, the most damage you can get the fastest is how you take down squads. And trust me as someone who plays CVs and AA Cruisers(AA Gouden Leeuw for life), you can feel when someone uses their priority sector to early or best case for the CV not at all.

Or maybe its just the planes flying into closer AA ranges. I too played CVs and AA ships for long while. The AA burst hurts, but not enough to really matter. @@jaywerner8415 It's hard to make out the exact numbers on screen because TH-cam video but watch the AA damage at 1:46 to 1:56 the only time the continuous AA damage increases is when the planes enter the closer range AA fields. The indicator on the ship compass with the timer is how long the sector lasts and what side of the ship it's on nothing more. Also using that strike as an example, the raw burst of ~1100 damage was around 4 seconds worth of long range AA damage instantly dealt to the squad. AA is a DPS race, and that gave PQ 4 extra seconds of DPS. All be it spread over the entire squad, but the damage does still add up. It does highly depend on the size and HP of the squad, but I can't see a reason to not at least try to hit the attacking squad with the burst. Even more so where against some CVs like the Russians it might be your only chance to get any damage off before the attack is dropped.
Just to say PQ that build is not classed as a full AA as you should have module 6 equipped which gives a massive boost and extra flak I know it’s crazy especially for American BBs cause of losing accuracy but you said it’s to show off the full AA build
You only get that extra +2 flak when you have a DefAA consumable running. On ships without DefAA it's just 15% DPS, and that's not nothing, but dispersion on the main guns, or reload rate for everyone else is just simply more effective. AAM2's AA effects should really be the slot 3 mod again, and AAM2 should get extra boosts for secondaries. Like slap another 20% secondary dispersion boost on it or something.

can you test out full aa edgar? edgar is arguably the best aa platform without deff aa, has the longest midrange aura at 5km and the 2nd is 4km so nothing comes close
American or Japanese tech tree battleships are easy to learn, fun to use, and great for XP. The British and German tech trees are good to learn once you've gotten plenty experience with the US and JP trees.
I feel like not shooting the riga for 2 whole minutes waiting for the hindenberg (who was aware of you) to turn broadside at 19 km when you have such slow shells is a case of tunnel vision. Consider that the riga had 37k health and even with poor dispersion you can do 5-8k damage per shot
or defensive AA. I still think Vermont is among the best aa bb in the game. Just the other day I full cleared dropless Midway torp planes. I haven't done that since November, 2023. I feel they are hot-tweaking aspects of the game, because there was a long hiatus for effectively being able to take down planes since late last year.
Seriously. Those plane kills were NOT effective. The CV doesn't care if he loses a few million planes, he can still get his first drop off 100% of the time.

Even PQ in his big "CVs don't belong in the game" video spent most of that video playing FDR, the CV everyone could agree was and still is brokenly overpowered and the CV that is the most noob friendly just giving the stupidly high HP of each squad.(FDR seems to always be the CV the anti-CV CCs and former CCs play when they want to convince their audience CVs are broken... it's almost as if they know their point wouldn't be made if they played anything else.)
AA builds are worthless, the first time a CV loses all his planes he can just never go near you again and just pick on your dds, or anyone but you, and you have then taken worthless captain skills.

AA build austin is hilarious. You can vaporize any planes comming at you once you activate priority sector and DFAA.

In the first game, after taking all those hits on the starboard side you probably lost a fair amount of AA guns.
if you look closely he has a addon that keeps track of the %AA and %secondaries that are still alive and by the end of the game he was still at 90%

I think the 2 points AA upgrade on the captain is worth. 40% shorter countdown on consumables is nice think

Hey im new here , which tree tech you would recommend for battleship.
American or Japanese tech tree battleships are easy to learn, fun to use, and great for XP. The British and German tech trees are good to learn once you've gotten plenty experience with the US and JP trees.
