Beautiful dress! As a fireperformer, I think all your safety measures were needed and you did a good job at thinking about them. I know experienced colleagues who had severe burns (one died). Wearable fire Props have proven to be the most dangerous, compared to Poi, Staff, Hoop etc. I actually love option 1, as it is safe and more reliable in performance and looks cool :) So maybe you wanna try it another time? I would love to see it! For everyone checking into this: Ground rule for all fire spinners is not to use plastic fabrics for the costume, as it can melt into your skin, and that is a nasty burn. Use cotton or wool or linnen :) Always keep a wet blanket and bucket of clean water nearby and don't point a CO2 extingusher at a person. Hope this helps!
God I remember when that event happened, with the weighted skirt. Absolutely devastating as a fire performer - we all feel it when one of our own is injured or dies. Thanks for taking the time to talk about this - as an experienced fire performer, I concur with your assessments and advice here.
I also think option 1 is the best and also looks more like the one in the movie. Since it's said in the movie itself, that the fire is not real, it's just an illusion.
Hi! i did fire poi and fireplay once upon a time but only beginner level and currently researching a plan for another fire cosplay photoshoot that i still need additional info for. Mind if I ask you for more details?
“Looking back at the footage I know it doesn’t look that crazy impressive” Girl, what? You made an entire ball gown and set it on fire! It was awesome ❤
I love how excited your mom is "spin, spin!!", and your dad is getting in there and coming up with more ideas....families that art together have the most fun!!
If I’m being honest, this does prove that if you made the outer wedding dress part out of flash paper and the inner mockingjay dress out of something flame resistant, it could work. But it would be really tricky to make it safe and very much one-use.
Technically yes, but it's tissue paper and it's extremely fragile so it would be impossible to sew with, also with the amount of ruffles and volume of the wedding dress there would be no way to make it actually safe for her
Also like this isn't set in modern day nor with our modern science, the hunger games is far into the future and they can casually make muttations and heal someone entirely even old scars. I'd say it's some capitol engineering and futuristic science-y fabrics
I would look into skin-safe protective fire gell, it's used in practical effects and allows a fire to be burned very close to the body (ie. clothes) without hurting the person.
Look, this is gorgeous. You were absolutely right to overdo it with safety. The fact that you came up with all these ideas, executed them beautifully, and created such an amazing dress is hugely impressive. The amount of sewing, folding, researching, and preparing is unthinkable. You're fierce ❤
I don’t think you went overboard with fire safety. I’m very glad you took all those precaution to protect yourself, your house, and others, especially after seeing how close you had the fire to your face multiple times during testing 😳. You are so talented, and I am always blown away by what you come up with in these videos. Awesome job!
It's funny hearing you say the safety stuff sounds like overkill. I work in aerospace and had to wear safety glasses at my PC for years. I find it very refreshing to see youtubers addressing safety directly.
You could do the bottom of the skirt in large organza panels like in the original dress, then have an underskirt made of fiber optic fabric. When you spin, the organza panels will fly up, revealing bits of light from the fiber optic underskirt. It‘s not a dress on fire, but it‘s far safer and gives a longer-lasting effect than the flash paper.
Holy cow, amazing job on this!! As a chemist on the spill and first aid teams at my work, i'm glad you took safety so seriously! I'd be interested to see how it'd look if the "fuse" string was at the hem of the dress, rather than the top of that section, so that the fire can travel up the strings, rather than down
That was pretty cool! I suggest that you create a net of the flash string to attach to the dress. Make the lines drape diagonally to get the fire to move around the skirt more. Attach bits of flash paper and flash fluff all over the net. Also, you could make little paper roses out of the flash paper.... If you don't try this, I might have to and I don't have your figure. It would look like a giant tomato got lit on fire! Flame-roast tomato girl doesn't have quite the same ring to it as Girl on Fire!
here for the basic safety measures! super cool project, glad you put the thought into it necessary to avoid getting hurt. im sure you can totally get a better burn if you try it again and maybe let the flash string dry out more, if that was the issue
GIRL, this is my first video that ive seen of yours and this was AMAZING. also you did NOT go overkill with safety at ALL, my house burnt down last year in july so lemme tell you from experience, u do not want that happening! good job with this dress and for taking proper safety precautions ^^
Maybe some people won't notice it, but I absolutely loved the way you sewed down the tops of those pleats, I think it really, really brings a unique and beautiful touch to the well established 'formal gown' formula. As someone who's done some amount of practical clothing alterations and *a bit* of cosplay and is interested in designing my own 1930's based formal gown (just in case), those transitions between skirt and flounce etc. looking elongated and fluid still and not just blocked off is something I've been looking at a lot - and those pleats being sewn down like petals/stairs really did it for me 😁🥰 Thanks for yet another super creatively inspiring video, Shay!
Now I want to see all the hunger games outfits. This was so much fun to see how you worked it out and your dad posing with the material made me laugh - loved that your parents were game
aaaaaaaaa I've been following this saga on Instagram since you first posted about it - it really turned out amazing! Obviously the fire working was really impressive but I also think the actual dress is stunning and I really appreciate the amount of craftsmanship and skill that went into it!
That was sooo cool. It looks as if both the combination and placement of the fire string and fire paper is crucial. Before you do the wedding dress, you should do more experiments with that. Maybe also do more cross connections to guide the fire. Regarding the flame retardant: absolutely mandatory IMO. The problem with the wedding dress: this one actually would have to burn away, so a real one-shot dress. Or maybe use the magic of editing and make it a tear-off dress? As always, this was such a joy to watch. And kudos to your parents, they were such a fantastic support to this, honestly, slightly insane project.
Like others have said, wool is naturally fire retardant, and if you coated that in the spray it would be even more so. Maybe an underdress of wool, then you could maybe put patches of the flash cotton in it, and make a sort of over skirt of the flash paper?? It's a great video that can give so many ideas and inspiration for future projects!!
I love your process for Katniss Everdeen’s red organza dress!! There’s our Girl On Fire! 🔥 Really appreciate how supportive and, excited her parents were!!
Wow, that was amazing! Can't wait to see you do more with this technique in the future! Also, not fire-related, but maybe you could do a remake/a dress inspired by the famous gold dress/coat that Liz Taylor wore in Cleopatra? I've always wanted to see someone attempt sth like that.
LMAO your reaction to the flash paper! Had me in tears. You were SO EXCITED! I love it! Also, KUDOS to that store owner who was willing to take an open flame to his own products to help you find the fabric you wanted.
Wow, now I’m envisioning katniss’ wedding dress entirely made from the flash paper and other materials, with an entirely flame retardant mockingjay dress underneath … it obviously wouldn’t be wearable but would look awesome even on just a mannequin!
I absolutely love your talent and your ability to create these masterpieces. I also LOVE the hunger games so this was so fun to watch. Love you Shay ❤❤
The dress was gorgeous and the solution for the fire you came up with was brilliant! As someone who loved Hunger Games dearly I never thought someone would attempt to recreate that dress, it came out great! ❤ (P.S: I absolutely love your MHA makeup palette/mirror ;) )
In hunger games catching fire there is this dress that Johanna wears when she is getting interviewed that is really cool as her stylist was making her outfit to imitate a tree and so it has lots of layers and it’s really cool.
First video and I'm already subscribed! Love your energy it's very infectious. Don't be disheartened, you gave it a brilliant go and it worked well! AND NEVER SKIMP ON THE FIRE SAFETY! Seriously, I'm so glad you were so cautious and made sure you were fully prepared for this!
That is soooo exciting!! And I loved the talk about all the safety precautions, defenetly the responsible thing to say to ppl that tend to want to imitate
There's a reason that they did those dresses in animation, to make what is impossible in real life seem possible. And now you're attempting it in real life! Hats off to you. 😅😂
I loved the movies take on the dresses, but the way the books described this dress was gorgeous! It was entirely bejewelled and the way the gems caught the light are why it looked like it was flaming. I loved Cenna so much! It’d be so cool if you could recreate the book dress!
Red is one of my top favorite colors. I’m beyond impressed you managed to do this. It made me smile when you said, “Go watch The Hunger Games” at the end. I’m such a BIG fan of the film franchise too!!!!!!!!! ❤
OMG Please do Katniss' wedding dress!! That one is my favorite of all her dresses in the franchise too! And I would love for it to be the same deal like this red dress - it can be worn again and again and no damage to the actual dress! That's so much better than it being just one and done!!
I’m literally procrastinating while watching this and I realize how much your editing improved as you continue to post. Also, I have just started this video but I can tell it’s going to be amazing! Keep being awesome.
OMG this dress was FIRE! Turned out so fun
Future Collab maybe? (Also loved Saf candle collab that just came out)
You guys are awesome
omg hi im very happy to know yall also like her! the dress was so cool and so are yall
oh heyyy i just saw your collab with safiya! hope you're enjoying your candle!
Oh wow I did NOT expect you guys to be here

It’s kinda similar to „Sama“ Persian dance

I love your parents. They support your art so much they are fully willing to light you on fire. 😂😂😂
I came to say the same thing
😂
Not just that but trust her skills enough to do it within worrying enough to not do it
Yeah because she earns the money from her videos
@@meows_and_woofor they like seeing their daughter happy and are willing to help achieve that… not every parent wants money from their kid ‼️

yeah i am still afraid lol and shes like "well time for the full body one"
Do you think the petals on katniss' dress were decorated flash paper?
@@glittergirljmmNo, they were real fabric, the flames were added in later using CGI
How does she come up with these ideas, she’s a borderline mad scientist for clothing
but for real
She's amazing ❤
Naw she crossed the border
she is our Edna Mode
😊Movies and stage productions need people like her in their costume departments.

That’s exactly what I commented about!! I was thinking that since the beginning

I'd say it's some capitol engineering and futuristic science-y fabrics

This is amazing. To look at CGI and to say "you know what, I can do that IRL" and to be right! That's skill!

i hope she sees this that's the only thing i'm concerned when she speaks about making the wedding dress T^T
Someone find her a stunt friend for some safety on body burns.
uyes
used by people who know what they're doing!!

As an Australian, fire safety is drilled into us from a young age so thumbs up for all your precautions, the Mythbusters would approve
So cool! 🤩Creating petals instead of squares out of flash paper could have been a cool way to tie in the petal motif from the original dress.
I love how shay becomes more of a fashion wizard every new upload.
