Damn, he told us the whole story of the young witch and her bear buddy basically just through his drawing. As every single details matters in some way, and every single tiny thing has it's own logical explanation, why it's there. It's just amaze me, how much attention and care he put in there...
This kind of "watercolor" style is definitely my favorite from you. I absolutely adored that Bear by the Bridge illustration you did and became so inspired after that. And now once again, I am inspired to try my hand at an isometric piece! Never tried it before as it always seemed a bit intimidating to me, but I'll never learn if I don't do it! ☺️
I recommend starting small and not having a grid or guides on at the planning phase because they can easily limit the drawing into boxy shapes. Once you have enough of the lines done it gets really fun to tinker with the small diorama you’ve created. Highly recommend giving it a go but just be prepared for a longer project than usual.
Can't explain why but whenever I feel unmotivated Mikko's videos immediately put me in the right mood to draw, paint, do a study, start a new piece or finish that one that I've been dragging forever.
It’s strange how the objects seem like puzzle pieces in an illustration like this. Once you find the place they fit there’s no other way it could have been done. I didn’t feel like I had to come up with the story elements. I just looked at what was already there.
I love how happy you are during this it’s adorable and really shows how much this makes you happy please keep following your passions I absolutely loved this it makes me feel warm I’ve always loved fantasy worlds and art with plants❤️❤️
As an author myself, I've had the same experience as you have: the world and the space can inform the story and make the story come alive. I like sketching out scenes sometimes if the scene feels too flat, and usually, I have an insight that I would have never had otherwise. I just a day or two ago wondered if I should try isometric drawing for spaces (mainly to make them easier to remember and as I'm writing a series), and now this wonderful video from you got me convinced I should try. I do love the bear and the whole story of this picture, and yes, the mouse is very important.
Thank you so much @angrymikko for sharing this video. I love isometric illustration and I always wanted to learn but haven't been able to put the time and focus on it. This video is a great (and beautiful) example of how cool isometric can be! :) thank you so much and please keep doing great work! :)
I love that storytelling is at the forefront of this piece, the isometric illustration allows it to come through so well! How often do you start a piece like this with a traditional medium, and what does the process look like of scanning it into procreate? Thank you so much!
Just wanted to let you know, that your channel and your work isn‘t just inspiring and motivating but also soothing and so positive. Even my non computer graphics GF likes to watch your videos and wants to have an own iPad, once we can afford it. I hope some day, we can support you doing what you do. You definitely are working in the happy business. And we need you to be able to keep doing it. Makes the world a better place. Best wishes, stay healthy! Aloha and Mahalo from Germany
I love, love, love your artwork! The way you describe why the bear is sitting in the chair reading a cookbook, etc. Your details are eye-candy & I want to search for every single item in the room & imagine the story behind it. The colours are gorgeous too. You inspire me greatly and watching your video took my busy, brain away from my problems to feast my eyes on your very magical, detailed house. Thank you, now I’m inspired to try this :)
Thank you so much 🐻 After a certain amount of clues it seemed like I didn't have to struggle with what to draw because the drawing kind of already told me everything it needs. Wish all processes were like this really =)
I'm just watching videos of people drawing different rooms for inspiration and ideas, as i want to draw the room one of my characters lives in at a certain part in the story. and i totally agree with what you said 10:03. i'm in fact designing her room because i want it to give me and my friends a clearer idea of who she is. i want her personality to shine through. because i feel like drawing it will give me a better feel to her, as a story teller and an artist. designing a characters living space is intimidating, but also cool, because you can develop their personality and quirks if you do. it's one of the big reasons i want to draw her apartment. it's gonna be time consuming, but i really like her and want to develop her further and make sure i know her better. it's hard to explain, but i know if i can create a room that feels like hers at that point in the story, i know i can realize more about her character as well and know her better. thank you for the inspiration! and sorry for the long comment. i loved your illustration, subscribed :)
Kusanagi did an amazing job with 7 to 9 and that art is spectacular. SE should have bought them before tencent swallowed that entire art group into it's mobile business.
I feel like am lucky to find an artist like you. Besides loving your art style, fantasy characters, etc; also I can listen to your design process as well as learning a lot of things all at once! Thanks for your videos.
Thank you so much for all of your art, your video and your views. It always inspired me to never stop learning. I strive to be like you 1 day. Thank you again.
This has definitely inspired; been meaning to jump on the Isometric bandwagon for a while now. Thank you for all the great tips! Really love the wonderful backstory, and I also have the same habit of giving love and care to the tiniest details in a painting, as you have done with the sweet little rat 🐭💕
I am now inspired to make isometric art. It's been a hard time for me and i haven't been drawing lately... Hopefully I will finally continue my art journey
I always loved these types of drawings as well, as a kid and up to this day. So the details, care, and attention you gave to your creation really resonated with me! You created a beautiful, relatable space which somehow feels both familiar and strange. So excellent, kiitoksia for sharing!! (I am guessing by your accent you are Finnish 😊)
Mikko your process is pure genious. the story narrative was absolutely enchanting and left me wanting more. I often wonder about your layers...how many you might have in this (and other projects) but I really just love seeing you create and listening to you.
The number of layers doesn’t matter because it would only be beneficial to you if I explained the function of each one as I’m making them and why I’m merging them. Using that number would also lead to workflow bottlenecks because I’m always working at the edge of my hardware capabilities. It’s only possible because of my experience with how to manage my layers. I would recommend having at least 20 extra layers available when you’re starting and as you get better at knowing how many you need you can slowly start getting closer to the edge of what your device is capable of. In some of my paintings I need only 3 layers and I’m using all of the extra ram for resolution. In other cases the style itself requires a large number of layers like my graphic pieces. I could do a tutorial on this principle but in my experience those videos aren’t really worth making because people want concrete numbers to follow instead of theory. In these cases yt isn’t the best platform for information because the viewer preferences dictate what we content creators make. I know this wasn’t the answer you probably were looking for but it’s an honest one. There’s also a 1hr 55min version of this process on my membership library but I have to underline that those decisions are specific to the needs of this piece and I can’t in good conscience market those videos as an example of how all of my illustrations are made.
Creativity is often like improv. You should always follow up with yes and rather than shoot down the ideas that pop up. Creativity is not dumb, it will take the hint when it keeps getting signals that it’s not appreciated.
you coloring is so beautiful! can you make a video showing us how you choose the colors and how u make them work together? love your videos much love 🤍🌸
All paintings have different ways how colours work in their context. In this one I let the shadows merge into each other and let the hues blend like it was a 2d surface. This approach wouldn’t work with my other styles but it’s better to look at each painting as it’s own set of problems that need unique solutions. I’ll make more videos on colours but the topic is just too wide to be solved in one video. There are endless ways to approach colour theory and as many ways to implement it.
Your art always amazes me!!! It has such detail and is so creative. I recently got an iPad pro & obviously bought Procreate.... but I'm quite intimidated and overwhelmed and have no clue how to even begin these types of art pieces and what to even practice to build confidence.
Definitely not recommending this for beginners. It’s always better to start with one single object and build up from there. Take it slow and focus on the basics without going crazy with all of the tools. The latter part will be the real challenge ☝️ Good luck and stay patient 🐻
Thank you :) I remember how long the whole piece took but in the end it was worth it. Was a bit scary before I figured out how to solve the edges but once that part clicked it became one of those drawings that you just want to keep working on forever.
This is amazing and so adorable. I love the story you telling while painting details. It makes this art piece interesting and fun to spot on each details more closely.
Making this felt like reading a book. I can’t claim I knew where it was going but maybe that’s why I didn’t run out of patience with all the work involved.
I love this scene soo much and I was wondering if you would consider making the brush available again sometime in the future? I would love to be able to try it out.
Both of those livestreams were fun to do because the time limits really forced me to make quick progress in both phases. I still remember how excited I was when I made those ladders 😂

You know what would be lovely? If you shot a tutorial for your brushes, how you think while you’re using them and WHEN you’re supposed to use them to get the texture that you do. I always end up either blowing out the texture or having it be super desaturated
I think that’s a good idea. I usually only use one brush for paintings like this but the way I use it varies based on what I’m painting. Have you adjusted your pressure curve so that you have control over your stylus? Most of my own brushes also use angle of the stylus to trigger scale or opacity modifiers.
@@angrymikko I tried to but, I just ended up sticking to the default one, I already have muscle memory with it and brushes are usually designed with it in mind. Your particular pressure curve is too sensitive for my heavy handed self and the inverse usually makes brushes barely paint when going as light handed as I can
It's so beautiful 😭 I've honestly been anxiously awaiting the release of this piece! I finished my loft studio, but the process was a little frustrating, and I was definitely a little overwhelmed by the detail aspect. I'm excited to try again, and am totally inspired by this piece! I want a print but it's not in your print shop yet. 👀
I did have a question, was there something specific you did in Sketch Up to make it isometric? Looking back at my drawing, I don't think it's isometric. The window lines have a vanishing point. 🤔
I set the fiel of view to 0 you can see this in the very beginning of the livestream as I talk through it. After pressing the field of view drop down menu look at the bottom right corner of the screen.
Thank you so much, I really wanted to draw some scenario like this before, but I never got the feeling to do it, but you really inspired me to try this again 💜
Hello, Mikko! Is the sketchup livestream for this house uploaded? I was trying to find it in your Livestream playlist but couldn't find it :) Love this illustration btw, I always love drawing rooms and just starting to learn basic perspective now, so glad i found your channel!
I observed that a lot of isometric drawings are interiors and they tend to feel very warm and cozy. I wonder why. Maybe it evokes memories and feelings from childhood?
Isometric art is some of my favorite. How did you go from your sketch in pencil to procreate? Did you just take a screenshot and import it as an image?
I use a scanner to get the lines in as high dpi as possible. Then I separate the lines from paper with a layer mask because I want to paint on the alpha locked lines later.
Such a talent! I would like to start drawing in isometric. I have almost no experience in drawing, except for technical design (I am a mechanical engineer).
This looks like such a wonderful space Mikko! Warm and cozy. 😊 Also, I just finished a painting I’ve been working on, and am excited to download this brush and give it a try!
Damn, he told us the whole story of the young witch and her bear buddy basically just through his drawing. As every single details matters in some way, and every single tiny thing has it's own logical explanation, why it's there. It's just amaze me, how much attention and care he put in there...

your ability to imagine is a gift! love the story!
I am in love with this illustration our wedding is tomorrow and you're all invited
Amazing!!!🤩 thank you so much for showing us how to push isometric drawing to it limits.
Cartoonish and realistic = lovely 😍
I’m leaning more towards storybookism even though that’s not a thing 🧐
I like the rat, it feels like the witch is open to sharing her space with nature
I love your mouse. Very essential to the process!
Your visual and auditory narration of this story made me smile so much.

You are amazing dude 👌
Wish I could say this was easy but like most things just patience is enough.
Thank you so much, I really wanted to draw some scenario like this before, but I never got the feeling to do it, but you really inspired me to try this again 💜
Go for it! Start small, use a grid it’s really not that hard but with a lot of items in the scene it can quickly snowball into a big timesink.
Omg it’s perfect! It’s a high quality! What device do you use to record the video?
Hello, Mikko! Is the sketchup livestream for this house uploaded? I was trying to find it in your Livestream playlist but couldn't find it :) Love this illustration btw, I always love drawing rooms and just starting to learn basic perspective now, so glad i found your channel!
I observed that a lot of isometric drawings are interiors and they tend to feel very warm and cozy. I wonder why. Maybe it evokes memories and feelings from childhood?
For me it reminds me of 90’s videogames but that’s true for most of my art.
Omg this is so amazing🥹💖😭
Thank you, it was worth the effort but isometric pieces are a handful.
awesome
Isometric art is some of my favorite. How did you go from your sketch in pencil to procreate? Did you just take a screenshot and import it as an image?
I use a scanner to get the lines in as high dpi as possible. Then I separate the lines from paper with a layer mask because I want to paint on the alpha locked lines later.
Such a talent!
I would like to start drawing in isometric. I have almost no experience in drawing, except for technical design (I am a mechanical engineer).
I recommend starting small and having a simple grid to help with the alignment of diagonal lines.
This looks like such a wonderful space Mikko! Warm and cozy. 😊 Also, I just finished a painting I’ve been working on, and am excited to download this brush and give it a try!
