I had just read that this car is currently going through a restoration. Thank you rare blends for all the background information. This is such a cool build!
I saw you ask him for an interview on FB. Man I can entirely understand how heart poundingly excited you must've felt! This is a piece of history in my opinion. Similar to that civic hatchback with the rear mounted v6.
Fastlane magazine claimed the CRX was the most excitement for your money, of all time. A buddy of mine had a hot one, and I agree! Adding a second engine would make it.... TOO MUCH FUN.
@@Chris.Davies having owned several CRXs I can tell you for fact that these cars are amazing! There is truly no experience like them on the road today!
I had a new eighty four model that I bought in guam when I was in the air force and brought it home and yes, for seventy six horsepower, it was a lot of fun..
Neat video. Back in the late 80s early 90s my father started to put a Porsche 928 v8 in the back of a 87 CRX . He mounted the trans on a modified bell housing directly to the engine so it was in the backseat under the glass. He had the whole back end of the car close to being finished as far as the frame everything mounted but then he had to stop in the car didn’t get finished. I still have it I have to finish it for him . I told him I would do it someday
Thank you! And you most definitely need to finish that project of yours! Please keep us posted when you start in it again! Maybe go with a Honda J series motor instead of a Porsche?
thanks for the video! Does the car have a transmission comunicating both motors or they implement some sort of electronic differential to have all wheels at the same speed? Sorry if this is obvious but I am not a car expert and it really intrigues me.
The cool thing about this car is that due to the fact it has two identical motors all that was required was the ground to keep it synchronized! No special transmission required. It can be run as a front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or better yet all wheel drive.
Old school car with old school video quality...or is it just me? My bad if so. I LOVE the CRXs btw. I own 2, 2nd gen. Didn't know this model existed. Good stuff. Bless.
Thank you for checking out my video! Unfortunately when I uploaded it went as 720 p and not the original 1080 p. By the time I caught it the views had climbed quickly and it was too late to take down and repost. Maybe at a later date I’ll re upload the original 1080p with some adjustments. Old School Rules!
Very good eye and good question! I wish I had the exact answer for you, but I will do some digging. The numbers I had were from the current owner and an interview I read. It is very possible that: A) It was a typo or B) Racing Beat did some magical engine work. If I can find out for sure I will let you know!
The 2nd engine reminds me of my Honda Beat, it is also a rear engined Honda, you have to take the convertible top off to access the 2 piece access panel to the motor.
Yes it would have been awesome to at least start this up! Sadly she does need some work including a new fuel cell/ fuel pump. Hopefully it’s next owner will be able to restore her and get her back on the road again.
@@crazyadventures9554 the owner is asking $20k US which may seem like a lot, but this is a one of one and Honda CRXs in general have started to rise in value!
All 84-87 CR-X automatics came with a 1.3 ltr engine. 85-87 had a 1.5 option for the Si model that was a manual only. Other than that, you're correct on your video to my knowledge.
Definitely not the only one, guy from my country, Czech republic made the CRX bimoto ED9, was built around year 2000 (try to search skritek crx bimoto). But nice built. Have fun
Hey Jerry! Thanks for the info. I did do a Google search of what you wrote but unfortunately no photos or information showed up. Also this car was built 15 years before your friends car. If you have some information on his build please send it my way.
We truly hope this car is not lost over time. Our main goal is to shed some light on a fantastic project car that deserves its place in the automotive history books! Thanks for your support!
I remember reading the original Car and Driver article on this car. I’d love to make a twin engine Festiva or Corolla wagon or Vibe. A Festiva version would probably be the most interesting since it’s so short. Imagine if the rear steering system was still used for parallel parking in a busy downtown or seeing how sharp it could turn in a parking lot.
They did make a Ford Festiva Sho-gun with a Ford Taurus SHO motor in it. Only seven were ever made and sadly one was recently lost in the wildfires in Colorado.
I had a new one over in Guam. When I was in the air force, I can't remember whether it was an 84 or an 85, but anyways, it had a 76 horsepower engine with a 5 speed transmission and no power steering, and it was super lightweight. So it was a lot of fun and I brought it home and it made quite a sensation as there weren't that many around in February of 95, when it was brought into Oakland
I thought the engine change was to a pair of D16a1's (from Integra, basically bolt in), not A20a1's (from Accord), and I thought they were carb'd to avoid efi troubles.
Originally it was two 1.5 D15A2 then swapped out for the Accord LXi A20A4, and everything was switched over to EFI. It was more transmission issues than anything else that presented challenges
Very true but remember these cars only weighed 1,800 lbs. so the additional power helped overcome the power to weight ratio and gave the car an almost perfect 50/50 weight balance.
Well I don’t feel that the current owner was trying to keep it a secret. He, like many of us, have several projects going on at once and unfortunately this little gem has fallen behind.
@@rareblendcars I've seen a few in years past, but never one that was finished. I have seen a few RWD conversions. One issue is they don't change the suspension geometry for the anti-squat mid/rwd needs.
@@hydrocarbon82 in many articles about this car and others that alter the geometry of the set up, most, not all, seem to not spend as much time developing the chassis properly. I do feel that this car could use a major suspension refresh in not just the shocks, but also bushings and even mounting points. Not perfect but a great project nevertheless!
An interesting car but you wasted too much time talking about the wheel and so on. Why not get right to the point and show how thw rear engine was fttted and tell us how he controled reves and gears in both units. Too much usless information and not enough on what makes this car so cool and different, ie the second engine.
Hey I greatly appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately the current owner is not the original owner / builder so the technical construction details you are asking about we’re just not available to me at the time. I have to disagree with you and say yes the details are what makes this car so special. Not just the motor or not just how fast it was, but how it all comes together. Nothing special was done to either motor so if you are looking for specific numbers you should be able to search online for that engines specifications. Thanks for watching! 😊👍
