The eight 8 oz. glasses of water thing comes from a miscalculation. It is calculated by
the amount of water it takes to digest a calorie, multiplied by "average" caloric intake per day. The reasoning goes like this: It takes about 1 milliliter of water, or .0338 ounces, to digest 1 calorie. Assuming an average caloric intake of 2000, that means 2.0 liters, or 67.628 ounces of water per day. Of course 8x8 is only 64, but "Eight 8 ounce glasses" is much catchier and
    easier to remember.
This seems reasonable, except for one thing. As you mentioned, almost all the food we eat contains plenty of water, certainly enough to enable us to digest it.
One thing I always found odd about this recommendation for water amounts is I've never seen it accompanied by any qualifiers. According to dogma, apparently everyone needs this amount of water every day, no matter their physical size or exertion. Adult sports enthusiast to adult couch potato to toddler, everyone should drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day. Blanket statements like these should always be questioned.

Dr Chris Smith, clinical Lecturer in Virology, Dept. of Pathology, Cambridge University, published more peer reviewed papers that you can shake a stick at. - "Only drinking when thirsty is more than enough water intake for most healthy adults". He also said, and I'm paraphrasing here, that the myth about if you're thirsty you're already dehydrated is nonsense, and that the only study that has ever supported the eight glasses a day theory was funded by a bottled water company.
Anyway that is a highly qualified and educated doctor at Cambridge university saying only drinking when thirsty is absolutely fine for most healthy adults who aren't losing a load of water through vigorous exercise or illness.
I only drink when I'm thirsty usually and I'm absolutely fine. Humans evolved to be the most efficient animal on earth at processing water, our ancestors would run for days in the African savanna while hunting a kill with next to nothing to drink, they were fine then, we are fine now.

Super Hans Interesting, thanks. I have on occasion asked advocates of over-hydrating why it is we are the only species on Earth that needs to be told how much to drink.

"I'd have to sweat as much again overnight" Does he not pee?
Drink when you are thirsty. That's a good general rule. I always make sure I have a drink at hand so I don't forget to drink. My body knows how much to take.

It's proven by the time your body sends thirst signals, it's already dehydrated.

I drink when my mouth feels a little dry or gunky as a result i go to the toilet at least 4-6 times a day maybe even more depending on how much water i chug as refilling my bottle aswell (which is 750ml)

+Samuel Brooks This is actually a myth. The latest evidence says drink when thirsty is fine.

If you always keep a drink with you, then its easier to drink enough because you habitually go to drink and when you start drinking you continue to drink as much as you feel you need to. If you do not get yourself a drink until you are noticeably thirsty, you may wait too long before you actually get up to get one, so I do think having a drink at hand is a common sense way to avoid dehydration.
Also look at your urine. Is it dark yellow? Then there's a good sign you need to drink more.

Also I always drink at least a pint of water after I wake up, and drink more if I feel like it.

I think that varies quite a bit between people. My body is extremely generous with sweat. It takes very little to prompt it, and it keeps going for quite a while. I've noted that while the sweat can be quite inconvenient, my recovery time for most tasks appears to be shorter than for other males my size and age.

For some reason when he says "a hot summers day", I don't think we picture the same thing. I think he probably means like 75 or 80 degrees (24c - 26c) with like 30% humidity. When I think of a hot summer day I think of 90 - 95 degrees (32c - 35c) and more like 80% humidity.

The "eight glasses a day" is based on a 250ml glass and lost fluid by just breathing and cycling the water in your body.
I know it's a bit of a myth and drinking when you're thirsty is usually a better bet.
Perhaps you should do a video on how much fluid is lost on an average day from the average person and if the myth that drinking lots of water is good for your skin. I seem to recall the infamous Leah Bets death who died from water overdose (as opposed to the heroin? overdose the media claimed it to be).

I believe that the cognitive measure is a little simplistic in explaining away the differences solely toward dehydration. Appreciable exercise levels either create and/or have the body release numerous chemicals into the bloodstream - anywhere from hormones to, well, chemicals that aren't hormones. As a high school teacher who sometimes had the same students the next semester (which changed for them), the overall demeanor in addition to the cognitive functions could drastically change a small portion of usually males to being completely different people - all depending on if they attended the physical education/gym class before or after their normal studies. True, to some degree it could have been dehydration, but the changes were drastic, and life-affecting for them.

It's not just how much but the quality of the water that matters. Regular water is dead water that can't hydrate you no matter how much of it you drink.
