  • The NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) and SHAPES in collaboration with the National Centre for Infectious Diseases present the workshop on the Ethics of Human Challenge Studies held on 8 April 2024.
    Part 1 of this workshop chaired by Dr Owen Schaefer from CBmE, explores challenge trials generally, comprising talks by our esteemed speakers:
    1. Shobana Balasingham, Research Lead for the Human Infection Study Programme at Wellcome provided an "Overview of history, aims and methodology of challenge trials" (00:03:04 - 00:17:58)
    2. Professor Jerry Menikoff from NUS CBmE discussed the "Ethical and Regulatory Aspects of Challenge Studies" (00:18:57 - 00:36:03)
    3. Professor Peter Singer from Princeton University, widely known as the world's most influential living philosopher, deliberated on "Further ethical challenges & approaches to overcome those challenges (Risk thresholds)" (00:37:18 - 00:52:32)
    4. Jake Eberts, Communications Director at 1Day Sooner brought in "Participant Perspectives" on engaging in human challenge trials (00:53:29 - 01:08:11)
    This was followed by a panel of the speakers engaging with the audience (01:08:12 - 01:41:45)
