I’m in the middle of a few other deals that have come through the channel, but yes, after that, I need to pump the brakes a bit and get back in sync with my allocation strategy.

I feel like every video should begin and end with a Jump counter. Also, this collection is bonkers. I've only *seen* like thirty Alpha cards, total, in my life, your enthusiasm is warranted and appreciated.
Great pick up, puts my small alpha horde to shame to say the least. I'm with you on the basics. I skipped them for the most part few years ago when I got back into magic collecting, and now I wish I hadn't. The increased supply and decreased cost I think it temporary, as people rush to lock in some of the crazy gains over the last few years, but the supply is still overall limited so I don't think this trend will last. I just wish my other collecting hobby, pulps, wasn't exploding right now so I could focus more on mtg.
Like we’ve agreed in a previous video: this is a work of love! Prices will test 2019-2020 highs, which is around when COVID really began to reck havoc worldwide; those prices + the rate of inflation since are the real prices of these cards to me. What happened during lockdown were an anomaly exacerbated by the Magic 30th fiasco. I was thinking the other day what if Magic 30th gave some collectors and/or investors that weren’t really doing much an excuse to get out. Plus, we need to take into account the millions who over-leverage or went into debt as a result of the pandemic: they needed to sell to get some level of liquidity. As long as priced don’t approach pre-2018 levels: we’ll be fine! If they do, then who knows how low they’ll go! For an example, I think 150-400 for Revised duals is a realistic price. I still cannot understood the prices of certain Magic 30th duals, which in reality, should be much less than IC/ICE. What do you think? Many blessings, my fellow hoarder. The magic 30 market is really mysterious, but it’s also undergoing a hard correction at the moment. The ironic thing is that, as a result of all the backlash, they’re probably going to be truly rare pieces, and there are a lot of set collectors who want one of every printing, putting some of those cards in surprisingly high demand 😩🤦♂️ I wonder if all the LOTR hype, and the hype in the sets that follow, will ultimately result in a burn out that pushes the money back to vintage stuff

Great collection! Love the conditions The market's lost a lot of steam but cheap playable Alphas are insta-selling. See cards like White Knight on TCG or recent KidIcarus auctions. It still puzzles me how an HP Alpha dual land is $2k and the equivalent in UNL is $500. But here we are!
I think the issue is Wizards burned the candle at both ends by burning both players and collectors at the same time. Compound that with soft overall economic market is a recipe for downward prices. I can’t keep up with new cards for decks. Every card is reprinted so much, the variants aren’t even more expense in some cases they are even less because no one cares! I am still adding to my collection all the time and have been shopping and I feel good about the buys I’m making. The market is still ok for certain types of cards both raw and graded
😂 I know… there’s a feedback loop particularly since I started the channel! Don’t worry your, cards are safe. My mind-control drones are a few years out… I’ll need them before I can get ahold of the rest of the alpha cards 😁

I think there's actually a lot of people who are seeing what's going on with WOTC and are just done with MTG. There's not much confidence in the reserved list these days either. Which I don't blame anyone for selling at this time. But, I'm staying the course 😎 Transfer of wealth time is NOW.

Wow, this is one of the most insane videos/collections I've seen since I returned to MTG six years ago. Absolutely gorgeous cards. I am genuinely curious who sells of such a collection? And also why they don't sell out singles instead of as one big collection. There has to be quite some loss. In general it seems like people are freaking out since the announcement of M30? I picked up a beta Gauntlet of Might BGS 9 today for 1450, and a beta Island Sanctuary, thought it was a decent purchase, but of course, nothing compared to this insanity. Appreciating that you share these videos, but I of course get a bit jealous (but who wouldn't)... :)

@@AlphaHoarder my gut feeling is that it's a combination of things. covid caused a lot of damage, money is tight because of inflation, and the wotc pushback. market seems super soft. there's an mtg card on ebay of which only 24 exist in the world and it hasn't sold for weeks now at around 6k dolars (im not the seller of this listing, but i do own a copy of the same card)
I wonder if the the increase in supply has to do with rising rates. Borrowing costs to hold inventory for businesses is higher and you can get a risk free 5% rate in a CD now (MTG has been going down or flat). Also Moxman mentioned a few LGS going out of business in his area. If that is common right now could be alot of inventory for the market to absorb.
Yeah, it could be more people are getting pushed over a breaking point, or else they feel it’s time to shift capital from collectibles into something more short-term productive. I’m not worried so much about the market being able to absorb the inventory, depending how long this goes of course, but I am expecting some short term dips as it flushes through. Crazy times.
Im a player with an accumulation of old cards. I might own 20 A/B non basic land cards total. These collections don’t exist anymore. They are evaporating into the abyss that we (collectors) reside. The documentation is just starting to surface….
I wonder how many collectors there are out there like the gentleman that sold all these cards… Under the radar with their carefully assembled hoards 🤔👀
@@AlphaHoarder I think the real questions: How many collectors (like your recent seller) felt that the MTG market was at peak or point that selling was a good idea? No one really knows the best time to sell. However at current buy list based on condition (40-65%) which is a responsible buy list margin. Seems to indicate niether “good nor bad” time. How did MTG30 impact that sellers final decision? How much Hasbro stock did the seller own? At the of BoA going public? Did they miss the 2018-21 RL boom and FOMO finally consumed the cat? How collectors did they consume before they sold to you? Did they just crack packs in the 90-00s and box em up? Sold the rares for profit? How does all of this correlate? Does it matter? Are we just engaging in FOMO based on promissory estoppel? Is WOTC watching these collections videos and taking notes? For MTG35? I don’t have the answers. Shit maybe 🤔 I’m too entrenched… like an ostrich with my head in the RL sand…
I collect Beta and have seen some inventory coming to market, but its still all mostly SP/MP stuff. I am not seeing any flood of NM and Gem Mint inventory coming to market. Icarus had some PSA10 auctions but that was about it, and it wasn't that much. This just seems like the normal turns the markets take from year to year. Sometimes there is more sometimes there is less. I may be wrong but apart from high end graded cards, a lot of NM alpha and beta is in the hands of collectors and not investors who will need to "realize gains" at any point.
Interesting insights, thanks for the comment. I saw Icarus did a few rounds of 10s, and on the alpha side, there have been quite a few 9s moving. My suspicion is that some collectors who had multiple copies are reducing their collections, which brings lots of this stuff to market. At least, that was my reading at the time. I’m not sure if still describes what we’re still seeing today. I just have a hard time believing the demographic of short-term holders of very nice alpha cards constitute enough supply to explain what we’ve seen - ongoing - the last 8 months. Fresh today are about two dozen listings for alpha rares graded 8.5 and higher, and today isn’t unusual. You certainly could be right, I wasn’t watching these markets closely prior to 2017, so perhaps this is part of the normal cycles. But at least, in the last six years, this is not the kind of inventory I’ve ever seen, and I have to think a good portion of it is coming from people who had no need to exit and are exiting/reducing for other reasons (since at, the stage post peaks, I imagine those are the types of people that still have the majority of these positions). Curious to hear your thoughts on that.
@@AlphaHoarder I mostly deal with beta and mostly auctions, eBay, etc. So my assessments may be a little biased. I remember the days of PWCC auctions and that was the most Beta inventory I remember on a regular basis, once every month or two. I haven't seen anything like that since PWCC was kicked off eBay (I haven't monitored their own site since either) We have had a few rounds of auctions but nothing like PWCC+Icarus days. I see most cards selling for more than pre2020 prices but cheaper than 2021/2022 prices. There have been quite a few things I have missed on because they went too high for me. So what inventory does seem to be coming out seems to be getting absorbed and I haven't seen any huge price swings. Are you seeing any in Alpha? Other than GradedPower is unloading what looks to be a bunch of recently opened and graded commons and uncommons. I just havent seen the rare inventory, at auction or below market listings. A lot of my "theories" stem from dealing with sportcards and such over the past 20 years, along with magic. I see the same trends in sport cards. Markets go thru hot and cold times. Inventory on the market always has swings. I don't think inventory on the market dictates people leaving or exiting unless you are seeing huge price swings. Because that means people are exiting faster than people are coming into or remaining, no? I am not a financial guy, I dont have any background in investing, so I don't assess things from that angle much. I basically just see parallels from sports cards markets, collectibles, hobbies and the magic market. I see how I and my friends collect, and just extrapolate from that.

It's looks like one of those collections that someone would have had from playing during alpha. I've never tracked alpha prices before. I wonder when was the last time you could have bought random alpha cards for a less than a buck a piece, like how revised was in 2015?

I usually dodge these questions (for a couple reasons… I worry stating numbers can be interpreted as giving entry/exit advice, I didn’t get permission from the seller to make the deal public, and personal privacy). But here’s some details, and you can workout the ballpark. It’s ~1400 cards total, ~500 are basic lands. Condition ranges from LP (a few exceptions) to NM. It was an off-platform transaction, but with a broker in the middle making a commission. Large deals are often discounted under market value. Hope that’s a reasonable compromise of an answer 🙂

That was a strange one. Obviously, when you’re dealing with PWCC, there’s a possibility of shenanigans. However, there are a small (but dedicated) set of ultra-high net worth individuals, who go crazy for vintage 10s, especially alpha 10s. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if that was a fully legit sale. There only exist something like 65 rare alpha tens, and almost all of them are locked away in collections. I’ll dig around and see if anybody knows anything more…

OH I don't think its just you. If I see ONE alpha card in the wild it's a moment I remember lol. I have a VERY well loved BETA Sea Serpent that I treasure lol. I recently bought a lot off of a guy on EBAY, collector / player, dropped his whole load because of the Hasbro stuff, lost his love of the game because the way the human representation of the game - WoTC - views him. Also, you're going to have to learn (how to play alpha 40 and) how far alpha can be rolled, fit inside you, and then unrolled into a playable state, I hear the stakes are VERY high at the tables in (insert state here) UltraMax prison.

Clearly, you know what the fuck is up. Awesome video and awesome collection!! However, I must say, the cards would be better kept in soft sleeves, normally referred to as penny sleeves. Those harder sleeves you used in the video are not where it’s at. They are more abrasive on the card and since they are tighter they require more force to remove from said sleeve. I realize you might have your entire hoard in these sleeves, but I can guarantee you that they are not ideal. Normally ultra pro penny sleeves are too tall for the average binder, which is why you might be using these sleeves. But I recently found soft sleeves that are short like the ones you have here. I would seriously consider checking them out.
You are correct that I switched specifically because the penny sleeves are too tall for binders. I’d love to know the brand you found that are shorter. To handle the surface abrasion issue, I only put cards in brand new sleeves and I never reuse them… But that can be wasteful 😬
@@AlphaHoarder yea totally man, I don’t reuse either! This is the way. I’m in Los Angeles and there is a brand that is based out here, so the LGS I used to work at carried them. It’s called Pro-Safe. In general it’s just a lower quality ultra pro and therefore the prices are cheaper too. (The soft sleeves are great tho) Their soft sleeves come in packs of 100 and are about the same size as your sleeves here are. There was also a penny sleeve famine here and my local target had some weird new brand. (Blanking on the name right now) I tried them out and they are also soft and this smaller size. I prefer the pro safes to the brand I found at target because the target ones are slightly tougher at the seams on either end which brings me back to, you want your sleeve to be the most elastic and softest it can be. If you have trouble sourcing the pro safe sleeves or find yourself paying more than $2 a pack, hit me up and I got you my gamer !!!

You could be right. People see the hype is over, it’s trending sideways, they want their capital back for something else.

The market's lost a lot of steam but cheap playable Alphas are insta-selling. See cards like White Knight on TCG or recent KidIcarus auctions.
It still puzzles me how an HP Alpha dual land is $2k and the equivalent in UNL is $500. But here we are!

I think the issue is Wizards burned the candle at both ends by burning both players and collectors at the same time. Compound that with soft overall economic market is a recipe for downward prices. I can’t keep up with new cards for decks. Every card is reprinted so much, the variants aren’t even more expense in some cases they are even less because no one cares! I am still adding to my collection all the time and have been shopping and I feel good about the buys I’m making. The market is still ok for certain types of cards both raw and graded

I think there's actually a lot of people who are seeing what's going on with WOTC and are just done with MTG. There's not much confidence in the reserved list these days either. Which I don't blame anyone for selling at this time. But, I'm staying the course 😎 Transfer of wealth time is NOW.

Wow, this is one of the most insane videos/collections I've seen since I returned to MTG six years ago. Absolutely gorgeous cards. I am genuinely curious who sells of such a collection? And also why they don't sell out singles instead of as one big collection. There has to be quite some loss. In general it seems like people are freaking out since the announcement of M30? I picked up a beta Gauntlet of Might BGS 9 today for 1450, and a beta Island Sanctuary, thought it was a decent purchase, but of course, nothing compared to this insanity. Appreciating that you share these videos, but I of course get a bit jealous (but who wouldn't)... :)

I use Titan Shields for anything only going in a sleeve/binder. For anything going into a toploader, I use a basic UltraPro penny sleeve

@@AlphaHoarder my gut feeling is that it's a combination of things. covid caused a lot of damage, money is tight because of inflation, and the wotc pushback. market seems super soft. there's an mtg card on ebay of which only 24 exist in the world and it hasn't sold for weeks now at around 6k dolars (im not the seller of this listing, but i do own a copy of the same card)

I wonder if the the increase in supply has to do with rising rates. Borrowing costs to hold inventory for businesses is higher and you can get a risk free 5% rate in a CD now (MTG has been going down or flat). Also Moxman mentioned a few LGS going out of business in his area. If that is common right now could be alot of inventory for the market to absorb.
Yeah, it could be more people are getting pushed over a breaking point, or else they feel it’s time to shift capital from collectibles into something more short-term productive. I’m not worried so much about the market being able to absorb the inventory, depending how long this goes of course, but I am expecting some short term dips as it flushes through. Crazy times.
Im a player with an accumulation of old cards. I might own 20 A/B non basic land cards total.
These collections don’t exist anymore. They are evaporating into the abyss that we (collectors) reside. The documentation is just starting to surface….

How many collectors (like your recent seller) felt that the MTG market was at peak or point that selling was a good idea? No one really knows the best time to sell.
However at current buy list based on condition (40-65%) which is a responsible buy list margin. Seems to indicate niether “good nor bad” time.
How did MTG30 impact that sellers final decision?
How much Hasbro stock did the seller own? At the of BoA going public?
Did they miss the 2018-21 RL boom and FOMO finally consumed the cat?
How collectors did they consume before they sold to you?
Did they just crack packs in the 90-00s and box em up? Sold the rares for profit?
How does all of this correlate? Does it matter? Are we just engaging in FOMO based on promissory estoppel? Is WOTC watching these collections videos and taking notes? For MTG35?
I don’t have the answers. Shit maybe 🤔 I’m too entrenched… like an ostrich with my head in the RL sand…

I really don’t know. Some hobby churn is inevitable, and background conditions will be a force multiplier on that.
FEED THE HOARD
I collect Beta and have seen some inventory coming to market, but its still all mostly SP/MP stuff. I am not seeing any flood of NM and Gem Mint inventory coming to market. Icarus had some PSA10 auctions but that was about it, and it wasn't that much. This just seems like the normal turns the markets take from year to year. Sometimes there is more sometimes there is less.
I may be wrong but apart from high end graded cards, a lot of NM alpha and beta is in the hands of collectors and not investors who will need to "realize gains" at any point.
Interesting insights, thanks for the comment. I saw Icarus did a few rounds of 10s, and on the alpha side, there have been quite a few 9s moving. My suspicion is that some collectors who had multiple copies are reducing their collections, which brings lots of this stuff to market. At least, that was my reading at the time. I’m not sure if still describes what we’re still seeing today. I just have a hard time believing the demographic of short-term holders of very nice alpha cards constitute enough supply to explain what we’ve seen - ongoing - the last 8 months. Fresh today are about two dozen listings for alpha rares graded 8.5 and higher, and today isn’t unusual. You certainly could be right, I wasn’t watching these markets closely prior to 2017, so perhaps this is part of the normal cycles. But at least, in the last six years, this is not the kind of inventory I’ve ever seen, and I have to think a good portion of it is coming from people who had no need to exit and are exiting/reducing for other reasons (since at, the stage post peaks, I imagine those are the types of people that still have the majority of these positions). Curious to hear your thoughts on that.
@@AlphaHoarder I mostly deal with beta and mostly auctions, eBay, etc. So my assessments may be a little biased.
I remember the days of PWCC auctions and that was the most Beta inventory I remember on a regular basis, once every month or two. I haven't seen anything like that since PWCC was kicked off eBay (I haven't monitored their own site since either)
We have had a few rounds of auctions but nothing like PWCC+Icarus days. I see most cards selling for more than pre2020 prices but cheaper than 2021/2022 prices. There have been quite a few things I have missed on because they went too high for me. So what inventory does seem to be coming out seems to be getting absorbed and I haven't seen any huge price swings. Are you seeing any in Alpha? Other than GradedPower is unloading what looks to be a bunch of recently opened and graded commons and uncommons. I just havent seen the rare inventory, at auction or below market listings.
A lot of my "theories" stem from dealing with sportcards and such over the past 20 years, along with magic. I see the same trends in sport cards. Markets go thru hot and cold times. Inventory on the market always has swings.
I don't think inventory on the market dictates people leaving or exiting unless you are seeing huge price swings. Because that means people are exiting faster than people are coming into or remaining, no?
I am not a financial guy, I dont have any background in investing, so I don't assess things from that angle much. I basically just see parallels from sports cards markets, collectibles, hobbies and the magic market. I see how I and my friends collect, and just extrapolate from that.

I usually dodge these questions (for a couple reasons… I worry stating numbers can be interpreted as giving entry/exit advice, I didn’t get permission from the seller to make the deal public, and personal privacy). But here’s some details, and you can workout the ballpark. It’s ~1400 cards total, ~500 are basic lands. Condition ranges from LP (a few exceptions) to NM. It was an off-platform transaction, but with a broker in the middle making a commission. Large deals are often discounted under market value. Hope that’s a reasonable compromise of an answer 🙂

That was a strange one. Obviously, when you’re dealing with PWCC, there’s a possibility of shenanigans. However, there are a small (but dedicated) set of ultra-high net worth individuals, who go crazy for vintage 10s, especially alpha 10s. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if that was a fully legit sale. There only exist something like 65 rare alpha tens, and almost all of them are locked away in collections. I’ll dig around and see if anybody knows anything more…

I recently bought a lot off of a guy on EBAY, collector / player, dropped his whole load because of the Hasbro stuff, lost his love of the game because the way the human representation of the game - WoTC - views him.
Also, you're going to have to learn (how to play alpha 40 and) how far alpha can be rolled, fit inside you, and then unrolled into a playable state, I hear the stakes are VERY high at the tables in (insert state here) UltraMax prison.

However, I must say, the cards would be better kept in soft sleeves, normally referred to as penny sleeves.
Those harder sleeves you used in the video are not where it’s at. They are more abrasive on the card and since they are tighter they require more force to remove from said sleeve.
I realize you might have your entire hoard in these sleeves, but I can guarantee you that they are not ideal.
Normally ultra pro penny sleeves are too tall for the average binder, which is why you might be using these sleeves. But I recently found soft sleeves that are short like the ones you have here.
I would seriously consider checking them out.
You are correct that I switched specifically because the penny sleeves are too tall for binders. I’d love to know the brand you found that are shorter. To handle the surface abrasion issue, I only put cards in brand new sleeves and I never reuse them… But that can be wasteful 😬

I’m in Los Angeles and there is a brand that is based out here, so the LGS I used to work at carried them. It’s called Pro-Safe.
In general it’s just a lower quality ultra pro and therefore the prices are cheaper too. (The soft sleeves are great tho)
Their soft sleeves come in packs of 100 and are about the same size as your sleeves here are.
There was also a penny sleeve famine here and my local target had some weird new brand. (Blanking on the name right now) I tried them out and they are also soft and this smaller size.
I prefer the pro safes to the brand I found at target because the target ones are slightly tougher at the seams on either end which brings me back to, you want your sleeve to be the most elastic and softest it can be.
If you have trouble sourcing the pro safe sleeves or find yourself paying more than $2 a pack, hit me up and I got you my gamer !!!
