Fun fact is that this game on GBA was one of my first games as a kid. Kindergarten. Getting to Burt the Bashful and seeing him fill the screen made me literally cry in fear. I didn't wind up talking about Sluggy the Unshaven in this video, but I can totally see being unsettled by it! Besides Sluggy being a screen-filling monster, the thing's translucent and you can see its heart (which is oddly hairy, like Tubba Blubba's Heart from Paper Mario). It slowly pushing Yoshi off the edge of the tower gives the fight added intensity, too. I think what's threatening about Bowser is as shown in this game even in his earliest days of being king Bowser still had an army. While it probably wasn't nowhere near as advanced as it was when he was an adult he still had followers. What's even more interesting is Bowser isn't even seen through most of the game. He's this ever looming presence while he has his minion Kamek do all the heavy lifting making him feel more like the main antagonist and while Kamek does allude to Bowser's Castle and the Koopa Kingdom a few times he doesn't outright confirm Bowser's involvement. Which makes Bowser's reveal all the more surprising and the way he's built up as you head through the rather offputting hallway leading to his throne room which is covered in odd floral like patterns while Kamek is giving it his all to try and stop you you get a sense of unease as you approach the massive door and enter it only to be greeted by the king who's throne room just resembles a massive nursery and learn that due to this game being a prequel he's a kid as well. But he's very cruel stomping Kamek into the dirt just for interrupting his nap then going on a tantrum that shakes the room. After being defeated by Yoshi Kamek lends his boss a hand and gives him a power up that causes Bowser to grow into what is basically the largest enemy in the game. Bowser is so massive that he now has basically destroyed the castle and Yoshi is stuck fighting Bowser on the ruins of his castle in the most stressful fight of the game. It really served as a good foundation of why Bowser is so bitter towards Yoshi and Mario and established that rivalry. Bowser in this game really felt like a plot twist and it was done quite well I think. Another thing worth noting is Bowser didn't even have minions like the Koopalings in this game. So he had to improvise and had Kamek magically enhance random low grade minions turning them into actual threats. The only exception really was Prince Froggy where he had Yoshi shrunk so Prince Froggy would eat Yoshi and his boss fight was just you fighting him from the inside while he tries to drop acid and Mega Guys on you.
When I first saw the snes Yoshi's Island commercial when I was 13 in 2017, I literally said "Why? Why did they do this?" Than again, before I watched that commercial, I watch the Gamecube's "What A Rush!" Commercial, which was equally worse... Okay the Yoshi's Island commercial is still bad, but still. I also watched the "What A Rush" commercial at 3am... I guess I had problems.
Might I recommend Dark Aspects episode for Super Mario Bros. (1993) given the new film is coming out soon. It's quite dark compared to the source material due to Nintendo's nonchalance to the film at the time.
That's a really great idea! I'm unironically a fan of that film because of how weirdly dark it is, I love the dystopian take on the Mushroom Kingdom being a literal kingdom overtaken by fungus. I'll let you know if I go that route!

Hey, Thane. I don’t know if you normally include glitches (since they’re obviously unintended), but talking of things that are decidedly creepy-have you ever seen the final-battle glitch that occurs if you survive Bowser charging at you? If not, check it out for yourself here on YT. Something decidedly off-putting about the screen suddenly filling up with a mess of upside-down Giant Baby Bowsers filling the sky (all running the wrong way)…!
Hi there! I'm certainly not against talking about glitches, I just hadn't heard about this one in my research on the game. That sounds awesome, and definitely creepy! I'll have to check it out soon
That's interesting! I can imagine listening to the song on its own and finding it soothing, I just associate it too much with that visual lol. I wish there were a longer version too, I didn't have it playing for very long in the video but I still had to loop it
It's a great choice for favorite game ever...I was always a Donkey Kong Country fan so those are the SNES platformers I've been revering my entire life, though there's certainly arguments to be made for Yoshi's Island being even better!
That's how I felt when the new Yoshi's Island course for Mario Kart was announced, I had just finished plaything through the game for the first time so it was super relevant to me! Hope you enjoy the video, glad it came at a good time for you
Hii, so I love all your videos, including this one. The beta baby bowser is definitely gonna haunt me for a couple weeks and every time you upload dark aspects of any video game I'm immediately tuned in. I just want to say thank you. I'd never have made it past the red coins lol. I also want to add that the term "Spirit animal" is very offensive towards indigenous/native people when used out of context and by someone none native so I just wanted to explain that and ask you not to use it and hope you understand. Thank you for all the work, research and footage. I'll be looking forward to your next video!
Hello! Thank you for your kind comment, and for letting me know about the negative connotations in using the term spirit animal in this way. I can see how that could be interperted as offensive/disrepectful, and I'm not out to hurt anyone's feelings so I will no longer use it. The next Dark Aspects should be ready towards the end of April 😊
I feel your pain with the flying Shy Guys, though sometimes the biggest issue to me was also completing a level with all 39 stars. And I swear, these monkeys make every level they appear in a bit more annoying than I needed it to be. Especially World 3's Extra Level. That one can just go die in a pit.
It's a pity that the Switch only has the English translation. Since the German translation is really well made especially with Lustiges Sporen Drama and the way how Kamek talked to Yoshi when you were in the Boss stages. Naval Piranhas German name is Audrey which is from a crappy horror movie from the 60s where a dude fell in love with a woman called Audrey and he created a plant he named after her which grew bigger after he gave the plant humans to eat since she is hungry very often
Also at 13:09, I always like how the background of the room looks like a monster, where the windows are the eyes and the walls the mouth.

That's a lot of 28s. Have a good Birthday.
"Yosh!" - Dr. Robotnik
9:00 Thane, I think you just inadvertently revealed to the world where Mario’s shroom addiction comes from…
Might I recommend Dark Aspects episode for Super Mario Bros.
Imagine being a spiky guy and falling to a lava melted alive by a yellow dinosaur.
Omg that end theme is so good
This was my favorite game
It's a great choice for favorite game, it holds up so well today and really impressed me going back to for the first time!
In the prototypes, Baby Mario was able to die if he fell into spikes
I didn't know that, thanks for the info!
Yoshi is awesome 😊
When encountering Tap Tap the Golden. In the GBA version it plays the Room Before Boss Music instead.
The GBA version is such a key part of my childhood.
10:48 Raphael is blasting off again!
I said the same thing in my head when I was going back through the footage 😆
"Count on Raphael to throw the first punch!"
Oh wait, wrong franchise....
This video willed itself in existence!!! Nostalgia to the 999'☆!
Yoshi's Island, obra maestra.
Map 6 is the terrifying in my childhood till 18 years later I managed to beat it my music choice I played during my gameplay Eric B & Rakim - Know the Ledge
7:17 what kind of Yoshi‘s island commercial is this?
You should go over the dark aspects of the metal gear series in my opinion
Strangely the DKC1 Game Over screen was always super soothing to me. I always wished there was a longer version of that Game Over song out there.
That's interesting! I can imagine listening to the song on its own and finding it soothing, I just associate it too much with that visual lol. I wish there were a longer version too, I didn't have it playing for very long in the video but I still had to loop it
Donkey Kong Country Returns remixes that song for it's Game Over screen and actually extends it.
Thought I was the only one that played yoshii topsy turby
The Fuzzys were the start of Mario's mushroom addiction
This is my favorite game of all time
It's a great choice for favorite game ever...I was always a Donkey Kong Country fan so those are the SNES platformers I've been revering my entire life, though there's certainly arguments to be made for Yoshi's Island being even better!
Beta big baby bowser looks like a Moomin
I was JUST thinking about watching something about this game.
That's how I felt when the new Yoshi's Island course for Mario Kart was announced, I had just finished plaything through the game for the first time so it was super relevant to me! Hope you enjoy the video, glad it came at a good time for you
also heyy im in the thumbnail
Beta Big Baby Bowser looks like an evil Moomin.
Y’all can’t lie you at least once got jumpscared in Luigi’s Mansion.
Soon we need a Dark aspect of Sega games
@@ThaneGaming I’m super excited! Thank you so much 💕 You are highly appreciated and I really really love your channel so this means a lot. 💕
Where would you Die faster? Ark Survival's Island? Peter Jackson's Skull Island? Monsterverse Skull Island? or fricken Yoshi's Island?
I feel your pain with the flying Shy Guys, though sometimes the biggest issue to me was also completing a level with all 39 stars. And I swear, these monkeys make every level they appear in a bit more annoying than I needed it to be.
Especially World 3's Extra Level. That one can just go die in a pit.
Ah, and if you want more stuff for Dark Aspects... consider checking out Kirby if you haven't yet!
I’m glad it was a it was cut off because first time I saw it it freaked me out 18:11 I’m glad it wasn’t in the game
Wow, you won a sub with this one
great video
*reveals he's never beaten the original Yoshi's Island but all the others*
You... really shouldn't admit that in public...
Do Yoshis Island DS
People are wimps if a game over screen scares them
Bowser’s still boorish and immature because he’s still a toddler even though Kamek turned him into an adult. What an idea.
Yoshi commits tax fraud
When I was researching for this game, I seriously kept getting "Don't do your taxes" ads from TurboTax 😅
