Was in the market for a MIDI based sampler when I heard about this thing. Very familiar with granular synthesis from modular so was sold pretty quickly. Should be an good companion for my current jam station.
I think I'm gonna go for the S-4. It seems to combine what I wanted to buy as separate devices in a single, elegant looking machine. Need to scrape some money together though, hopefully I'll be in time for the latest pre-order.
#11 arrived today, a day early & way more than a dollar more than I expected. this thing is in the "where's this instrument been all my life?" category along with the deluge. fabulous. even as-is, it ticks a lot of boxes for me, so I await the fw tweaks with some interest!
Very helpful video, thank you very much! Will there be another one focussing on the possibilities of the Torso S-4 for live performances? That would be very interesting!
Looks playful and your piece sounded great. If you wanted to make a song(as in the traditional format like verse- chorus.. etc) would this machine work well standalone without having to offload sections to a computer for arranging it into a full track?
It seems you can set each track to be a poly sampler. And each track can be set to a different MIDI channel. If so, is it possible to sequence all four tracks independently from a Digitakt?
Hi, thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have a few questions about the looper.... I see that you can assign a BPM to the sample but I did not understand the explanation, are you naming the file itself with the BPM or adding it as an atribute to the metadata? Also, is there an easy way to tell how many bars a given sample of a given length and BPM will cover? For example, if I wanted to make one loop that was 4 bars long and one that was three bars long and have them go in and out of sync with each other, how would I go about that? Or even just something basic like a basline that was 1 bar repeating and a melody that was 4 bars repeating? I appreciate that the instrument is more about experimentation, but I have some particular experiments in mind that I want to try and Ideally I need an instrument (not a DAW) that I can do something strange with yet still have it play along nicely with more conventional instruments like Drum machines and Volcas which are constrained to basic patterns.
Amazing demo, beautiful music and sounds. I can easily see this replacing a few things I have: Digitakt and Maschine, both of which have work flows I am sick of fighting to just to get to the music making part. This looks far more useable for those who are songwriter/composers and who just want to record and play around with audio in creative and out the way, ways. And really, is there anything that cannot be done with a 4 track? 😀 Especially one in stereo and as sleek well specced as this one. Thank you...
@@OoraMusic, I love that about it. It is such a great thing to work with devices that you can get up and running without having to get lost in nearly inscrutable workflows and too much muscle memory dependent menu diving. I like the way you approach your composition. I feel that to get that organic, musically rich thing happening, you have to have the structure, then always try to free yourself from it to make something you love...At around 17:50, that is quite incredible...
Octatrack seems to cover far more ground (more flexibly) for a similar price on the used market. Am I missing something in this comparison S4/Octatrack owners?
I’m wondering if I could use this with a more daw focused approach. Could I make loops- tracks on my daw and then feed them to the s4 and record in the daw at the same time???
A big missed opportunity is they only included 2 TS inputs for this device. TRS inputs would have made it possible to connect 2 separate stereo sources- which would have allowed the possibility for the S4 to compete with the Octatrack as a true performance mixer for live contexts.
Many thanks! Can the S4 apply the synthesis/fx to incoming audio live or must audio be recorded and played back order to access the fx and granular synthesis?
Thank you for you demonstration. Can you please tell me if I can connect my OP-1 to S-4 with midi? What kind of cables do I need? Many Thanks. Kind Regards
This machine is amazing. Just one question. If I were to team it up with a Digitakt can it change songs according to program change messages? For example if I jump to a new song on the Digitakt say Bank 1 track 7 to bank 1 track 8, will it be able to jump to the next track on the S-4 so the 4 tracks change to match with the Digitakt? Also if you use it on its own can you change different songs in a live setting? Finally does it do well with receiving external cc messages? Thanks!
What a beautiful instrument! Is "on the fly" live looping working with it? I will using pizomics as a sound source for looping live. The S4 should syned to the rest of my setup. If that will work that will be my dream looper/sampler.
Hey oora! Can we clock the granular effect? For example in 4 on the floor it's very important to have your sound matched to the beat. So is there any option to clock the granular matched to the bpm( 16th clocked grains) ?
@@FurryNightmare666yea, it looks promissing in like a year time maybe. Granular engine is super minimal. I returned my unit and unfollowed this channel
currently not possible. Why are you say yes and hiding such important information? Why don't you mention that essential things like MIDI sync are currently not possible and the firmware isn't ready yet?
The fx are really good, could use it just for that. I will use it in my live setup soon , probably won't substitute the Benidub but I would not use the space.

Hmmm... The firmware is far from being ready ! So many functions still not implemented ! It was said to be majorly upgraded end of june... Still waiting and getting bored as for now this machine is getting boring ! I'll receive a GR-Mega + A Solar 42 next week and I really think my S-4 will stay off for a very long time because it misses most functionnalities than I would need 😞
@OoraMusic thank you so much for the demo! When you use the multi-sampler around 14:00, can you also record the MIDI notes that you were playing? One can only record the audio buffer? Thank you!

Awesome video as always! Can't wait for Batch#2 of the S-4s to ship, looking forward to playing with it.
Cant wait to see what you gonna do with it!
Batch 3 gang!
I preordered mine months ago. Can’t wait. Glad you made these videos for us.
Glad you like them!
Mine turned up yesterday such a slick workflow and a wonderful sound design tool
yep!
Thanks for all you're doing!
Thank you John!
This thing is going to be a lot of fun. Thanks for your videos!
my pleasure!
What an exciting fun device! Right up my alley.
nice!!
Everything sounds great coming out of this unit
true!

Gorgeous sounds! Thanks for the video!
Thank you too!
Awesome instrument
Thanks for these videos! Was wondering can it also do sidechaining? For example having a melody on one track sidechained by a kick on another track?
not right now, but you can do it with the modifiers. I will ask the team to think about that!

Really love some of the tunes you are working with on the video. Is it possible to find your music somewhere on spotify etc?
Not completely direct but the artist gets the gross majority of funds.
It seems you can set each track to be a poly sampler. And each track can be set to a different MIDI channel. If so, is it possible to sequence all four tracks independently from a Digitakt?
Correct!!
Does it support poly AT as an 8-voice? If not: Can I load the same sample into all 4 tracks and thus emulate 4 voice Poly AT?
Really nice, thanks for sharing. What key and scale do you normally using for your ambient tunes?
Thankyou, great vid. The polysampler - any word on polyphony?
At the moment each track will have 8 note polyphony.
@@OoraMusic 😲 thats pretty sweet!
Great video, Oora! This device is definitely tempting. Do the samples you're browsing through @14:10 come with the S-4?
yep!

What cables are you using for your input and outputs on the S4?
Sounds lovely 👍🏻 interested in this machine. But there’s no sequencer right? Love the tape machine style workflow. Did you find it intuitive to learn?
super intuitive, no sequencer at the moment

Do you know if there are any differences between batch 1 and the newer ones? I could get a batch 1 used
I know they had to change the screen for newer batches because of some supply thing, but there should be no changes in functionality

I think you will be able to do that since it has audio via USB

yes, is all midi cc able, and in future they will add macros

you will be able to probably add more ins through the usb port. I did it using the tx6, but still a little unstable.

There is no midi support, nor do half the other promised features work. Don’t trust the shilling. This is a half baked joke of a product.
