Where's the menu diving on Elektron boxes? You've got a physical button for every menu plus a double press for the second page, and then there's one individual encoder for every on screen parameter. Try navigating some Roland/Korg stuff, that's menu diving! And, btw, the S4 menu structure here resemble A LOT the Elektron one, it's got a better/bigger screen, yes, but the menu concept is (luckily) very similar

I love the screen. I have a Gotharman Little DeFormer II that can do amazing sample mangling but the menu is atrocious compared to this. Great sound on the LD2 though!

@adammatza I really wanted a cosmos, I still do. I am glad to know the S4 and Cosmos are still distinct from each other. I attempted to win a cosmos in a tutorial contest last year, and SOMA sent me a RoAT as a runner-up prize. They are a very cool company, and eventually, I'll have the rest of the line up :)

Torso have such great designers. And this would sit so nice next to a Digitakt/Digitone/Analog Heat mk.II. So aesthetically pleasing, gotta catch em' all. Try and get your mitts on a Tasty Chips granular processor too sometime, think it would really suit your style. They need some excellent demoes, and you could definitely knock that one out of the part.
Yeah, I was comparing the S-4 to the Tasty Chips GR-1 throughout the video. Problem with the GR-1 is that it doesn't have audio in, recording requires an external audio interface and is very awkward, it has only a single effect that requires deep menu diving, setting the volume for 4 tracks is way more complicated, MIDI implementation sucks and saving a project is virtually impossible as the save menu feels like Windows 95 and tends to loose 2 hours of work. BUT: The granularity of the GR-1 has a better visualizer, it has way more grains and sounds better - more grainy, less washed out - even without delay/reverb etc. Tasty Chips said they'd overworked some functions for their truck-sized new granular synth, so I hope they will burn the old Os after Superbooth and make the GR-1 user interface somewhat acceptable for the first time.
I want this to success so bad. I will for sure buy it and I hope they will develop it. It will be perfect to play live and just add whatever synth/sampler to play a little live sounds

From your demo it seems that the timestretcher also pitches the sound up and down? Since selling my old Yamaha RS7000 I have struglled to find a reliable and high quality timestretcher that could create smooth ambient textures out of samples (I'm excluding Paulstretch).
you can keep the pitch fixed. I am not a big connoisseur of time stretching algorithms so I think this one is good, but dont't take my word as the final truth :)
Hi. Any idea how load a long sample in? mine is cutting of the sample at about 2 minutes. I need longer. it says 6 minutes in the Q&A. Wish it was longer, shame they put a limit.

this would be great with a variety of different reverbs and delays/echos. like a convolution reverb and the ability to import impulse responses for example would be perfect. can't wait to see how the fx section on this thing gets filled out with future firmware updates, it's looking great so far
Looks really promising, I wonder how is the midi implementation because it just lacks on a good sequencer! I love the form factor it's super portable but the Tasty Chips GR-Mega looks even more advanced but hard to tell how both will really compare, especially based on current firmware you just showcased. You got interesting results pretty fast tho, that's a good selling point!
I bought a Tasty Chips GR1 and returned it because it did not work properly. I actually had to force them to take it back after they where not willing or able to take care of the problem. They even tried to talk me into selling it on to the next fool at a loss. On paper it still is a dream instrument to me but I have totally lost my faith in the company. It has also made me less trusting towards boutique type companies in general.
midi sync is not working yet. GRM is a completely different beast, not out yet though. Groc from Oddment Audio is another interesting one. Torso did poor job introducing and rushing the S4
Interestingly, we are getting more and more of these granular machines. GR-1 has already established itself as a success, and the new version is coming out soon (already in pre-order if I am not mistaken), and I just wonder how much it overlaps with S4. Also, it is interesting to see such a hype for hardware granular stuff, since we have so many good software solutions for this (Izotope Iris even, as spectral granular plus tons of other stuff). Tracker by Polyend also offers granular mode, albeit in a different way. In modular world, there is Clouds, Morphagene, Arbhar, Lubadh, and now even granular - based filter like Klavis Grainity. I wonder how much of the S4 is unique and does it warrant the price tag, since it seems to me GR - MEGA much brings more on board albeit for 1k quid heftier pricetag (don't get confused, on Tasty Chips site preorder for GR MEGA is about 600 quid, but that is just a part of it, full price is 1.8 k). It is, indeed, all about how the instrument inspires you and if you like the workflow, I might get this one just to emulate old Tascam 4-5 channel cassette recorder and fill in my nostalgia.
Nice! I've been looking intensely at the S-4. I've been looking at the GR-MEGA, which I think is well more expensive. I just wondered if you've watched any of the [few] GR videos? I think the GR is not out yet, so mostly what you find are the superbooth-type videos, full of background chatter. Still, I think the capabilities of the GR have been defined--synthesis types and so on. Thanks.
Finally let myself watch this (knowing I’d want before hearing a note 😅), wonderful work, Federico! I’m in and excited for the future of the device. Might get in touch to see if they are welcoming further testers to push in strange ways. One idea I had (not just in response to this device but OT, MOOD, this S-4 too) but when a lot of the fun comes from messing with rate, what would be amazing is a sort of end-of-processing tuner. Perhaps the mixer gives a simple reading of the fundamental tone of a given track…being able to line up counterpoint, harmony etc would become so fast. It’s easy and fun to find yourself between notes with these devices, love it, but if there was a tuning ‘compass’ to help with accompaniment…hell yeah. (I do this by matching the rate parameter on OT)
I’m so impressed by T1 and S4 , they’re my most wanted and I am so sad about, can’t afford this 2 , but in my mind, I’m constructing tracks with them … Love the approach of that gear, coming from Cubase/Maschine/ Ableton Environment .. These little miracle machines make a great step, bringing such a potpourri of possibilities to a real-time live performance .. I love it … ❤
those two instruments from Torso can't even work together as of now (no midi sync, other issues). so when you have the money, beware and check out if they'd fixed the basics by then.
So refreshing to see a real instrument (this and the new Tastychips granular synth).. after seeing so many videos about that $900 white-on-white Instagram prop.

Thanks for this - it’s great to finally get a detailed overview of the S-4! It seems like it has some good possibilities, and Torso have demonstrated a positive track record of ongoing improvements with the T-1 (which I really enjoy). That said, between the vague information available last year and the limited initial product specs, I ended up pre-ordering a GR-MEGA instead, but perhaps this is one to keep an eye on when more features are (fully) implemented.
It’s here! And about 50% of the buttons don’t work or unimplemented. It doesn’t even support midi sync yet. It blows my mind how a product like this gets released and they have the balls to charge $900 for it.
@@YOGIGER yup, no midi sync. And most of it is vaporware. Doesn’t do half of what was advertised. I’m so tired of brands releasing crap that’s half baked.
This device was on preorder like from autumn and many features are not implemented yet.. Looks good, especially visuals, sounds rather glassy for my taste, hopefully sample examples related, but I'm not paying $900+ to work as beta tester. I think that for such a price it should be feature full and ready to go device :)
Very interesting and you crafted some beautiful sonic experiences. I have the Torso T-1 which I'm just beginning to explore. I imagine it pairs well with the S-4!
can you change the order of the 5 fx engines or is grain always frst and space always the last in audiopath? for example put the space before the saturation engine or infront of the grain engine?
Although I don’t think it really fits my needs so unwise it is very interesting as a design concept. I hope we get more multi channel samplers with polyphony.

Looks unreal. Thanks for the video. What is the total recording time for any single recording? I'd love to use it to record like 20-30 mins of synth noodling, then affect, trim etc and resample into my OT.

the device is far from ready. 4 buttons not working at all. no midi sync atm. crashes. other issues. that's why the only one who demoed it in its current state is Oora
mine's in the first batch. I have so many questions, but the most important one is "where is it?" 😂 frustrated by the GR-1, loving the 1010 blackbox & the deluge here (three of the bb, two deluge), can't wait to see how this integrates... ok- multisample support? & the internal recorder- is it post-everything? is it stereo? how do you name files? is there support for file transfers via usb? is there a file size or quantity limit? folder structure? will do some googling, but those are the main ones. can't wait!
No multisample att the moment ( might came later I feel), internal recorder is post everything or buffer recorder Pre everything ( still probably changing in the future forr the better),for now you name projects only, then it autonomies recordings and samples, file are tranferable easily with usb, no file size limit ( 4gb internal memory ), folder structure yes.
Will be interesting to see this used in a more deterministic and rhythmic usage case...seems to consolidate a lot of gear into a more performance friendly interface. Had to watch the vid 4 times before I’d fully mapped the S-4 to a creative situation rather than just a feature-set (due to the amount of versatility) and then it just clicked...I get it. I’m getting it :) thanks for the in depth look. Big future for this thing!
@@yurijogurtsov8710 still great, am using it daily in its current state and the features in the upcoming updates are sounding perfect for my usage case. Not sure how the beat-makers and "producers" will feel, it's a tad obtuse for them I think. And the production delays that are in turn holding up the firmware releases are mildly frustrating, but par for course for a company this size...which is why they've been interviewing me tech folks :) But all in, superb bit of kit that's got much more to it than has been seen so far
Definitely on my radar, but will wait for the firmware to mature. Want to be able to change the order of the effects at minimum. Also, 4GB storage limit is a bummer. Wish they would have added a microSD for storage of recordings and larger sample libraries.
Come back to this for another listen - sounds better second time around. Is it an alternate to the Octatrack? The foot print is ideal and love the workflow.
Hey Oora, thanks for the vid mate. 🙏 If you have some spare time I would like to ask you a few questions : -are tracks tied to scenes or whatever they call their "kits", like digis workflows ? I mean for live purpose, it would be great to be able to change track by track to a new scene for smooth transitions. -is it possible to use the timestretch according to a set length/bpm so if many tape tracks play at the same time we could have them play at the same kind of tempo ? I can only imagine what lorn-esc sounding soundscapes i can create with a few sounds. I have the dirtywave m8, a little roland j-6. Just want to play and travel through the soundwaves... I am so glad i preordered batch 1. And this video only shows a small amount of what it will be able to do.

Such an amazing instrument and DSP platform. Might sell my whole Eurocrack system and replace it with this. I pray that Torso add Scala microtuning support at some point.
The Novum blows this away...for 180.00. I switched to software and it’s like I woke from this bad dream where computers haven’t been invented and I had to spend hundreds of dollars fo something that’s normally around $50...or even free....and 10 times more powerful.

This is def a very interesting machine. If this would be open source and let others make unique scripts for it like on Monome Norns, it would be a hit, and make it more future proof and more versatile.

One idea I had (not just in response to this device but OT, MOOD, this S-4 too) but when a lot of the fun comes from messing with rate, what would be amazing is a sort of end-of-processing tuner. Perhaps the mixer gives a simple reading of the fundamental tone of a given track…being able to line up counterpoint, harmony etc would become so fast. It’s easy and fun to find yourself between notes with these devices, love it, but if there was a tuning ‘compass’ to help with accompaniment…hell yeah. (I do this by matching the rate parameter on OT)

Thanks for this - it’s great to finally get a detailed overview of the S-4! It seems like it has some good possibilities, and Torso have demonstrated a positive track record of ongoing improvements with the T-1 (which I really enjoy). That said, between the vague information available last year and the limited initial product specs, I ended up pre-ordering a GR-MEGA instead, but perhaps this is one to keep an eye on when more features are (fully) implemented.
yeah the development took longer than expected and im happy they decided to take the time needed. Im sure the mega is also a great instrument!

It’s here! And about 50% of the buttons don’t work or unimplemented. It doesn’t even support midi sync yet. It blows my mind how a product like this gets released and they have the balls to charge $900 for it.

This device was on preorder like from autumn and many features are not implemented yet.. Looks good, especially visuals, sounds rather glassy for my taste, hopefully sample examples related, but I'm not paying $900+ to work as beta tester. I think that for such a price it should be feature full and ready to go device :)
mate, they will ship final firmware units, not betas. This is a preview.
About the glassy sound: maybe a very generic idea, but almost all devices profit from some "warming" device toward the end of the chain.

can you change the order of the 5 fx engines or is grain always frst and space always the last in audiopath? for example put the space before the saturation engine or infront of the grain engine?

Oh my what a device, Great video, I can't wait to see more. How would you sync it with an external sequencer I wonder and get it quantised/looped correctly.
the device is far from ready. 4 buttons not working at all. no midi sync atm. crashes. other issues. that's why the only one who demoed it in its current state is Oora
mine's in the first batch. I have so many questions, but the most important one is "where is it?" 😂 frustrated by the GR-1, loving the 1010 blackbox & the deluge here (three of the bb, two deluge), can't wait to see how this integrates...
ok- multisample support? & the internal recorder- is it post-everything? is it stereo? how do you name files? is there support for file transfers via usb? is there a file size or quantity limit? folder structure? will do some googling, but those are the main ones. can't wait!
No multisample att the moment ( might came later I feel), internal recorder is post everything or buffer recorder Pre everything ( still probably changing in the future forr the better),for now you name projects only, then it autonomies recordings and samples, file are tranferable easily with usb, no file size limit ( 4gb internal memory ), folder structure yes.
Will be interesting to see this used in a more deterministic and rhythmic usage case...seems to consolidate a lot of gear into a more performance friendly interface. Had to watch the vid 4 times before I’d fully mapped the S-4 to a creative situation rather than just a feature-set (due to the amount of versatility) and then it just clicked...I get it. I’m getting it :) thanks for the in depth look. Big future for this thing!
Also consider this is still beta unit and we are working to refine many things!

@@yurijogurtsov8710 still great, am using it daily in its current state and the features in the upcoming updates are sounding perfect for my usage case. Not sure how the beat-makers and "producers" will feel, it's a tad obtuse for them I think. And the production delays that are in turn holding up the firmware releases are mildly frustrating, but par for course for a company this size...which is why they've been interviewing me tech folks :)
But all in, superb bit of kit that's got much more to it than has been seen so far

Definitely on my radar, but will wait for the firmware to mature. Want to be able to change the order of the effects at minimum. Also, 4GB storage limit is a bummer. Wish they would have added a microSD for storage of recordings and larger sample libraries.
it will read samples from external hd and will have chance to change order in future firmware.
Come back to this for another listen - sounds better second time around.
Is it an alternate to the Octatrack? The foot print is ideal and love the workflow.

-are tracks tied to scenes or whatever they call their "kits", like digis workflows ? I mean for live purpose, it would be great to be able to change track by track to a new scene for smooth transitions.
-is it possible to use the timestretch according to a set length/bpm so if many tape tracks play at the same time we could have them play at the same kind of tempo ?

Hey! at the moment all tracks are tied to global tempo. The implementation of scenes is not there yet, so can't really tell you about that!

Such an amazing instrument and DSP platform. Might sell my whole Eurocrack system and replace it with this. I pray that Torso add Scala microtuning support at some point.

I might be wrong, but I think there are customs or import charges applied if you’re buying this outside the EU
The Novum blows this away...for 180.00. I switched to software and it’s like I woke from this bad dream where computers haven’t been invented and I had to spend hundreds of dollars fo something that’s normally around $50...or even free....and 10 times more powerful.
It comes out $900 then later in a year drops down to $500. Ask Polylend they are kings of pump and dump gear

purtroppo non l ho mai provato! immagino pero' che l's-4 sia piu' avanzato tecnologicamente e quindi offra un miglior workflow!

Maybe implementing a midi controller yes, but I think the pace of the s4 is slower and more "meditative' . At least at firmware 1 :)
This is def a very interesting machine. If this would be open source and let others make unique scripts for it like on Monome Norns, it would be a hit, and make it more future proof and more versatile.
