You can also just right click on the middle of the route (where you want an ‘anchor point’) and choose “Add Destination” from the right click sub-menu. It will put add it to the route, in the correctly sorted order. Not a big thing. A tiny bit easier if you create a lot of routes.
The only problem with this is when you're riding, google maps "ends" at the first stop and you have to hit continue route or next destination or whatever. I wish there was a way to bypass this
Great video. I do the exact same thing. Using an Android you can add the route to your home page. I group days as icons. One thing to mention is when you launch, I change the starting point to my location. This takes it to navigation mode if your phone is mounted as your navigation device.
That's the same method I like to use, as well! The 'super slab' is typically not scenic as the highway roads that are around. The Google Maps options are handy to plot out some scenic paths. I never considered using Google sheets to plot out further routes - brilliant.
I ride solo but wanted to edit the route to add the twisty roads. Maps kept defaulting back to the more direct routes...so actually this video was for solo riders too! 😉👍
Hi , I use syci for this sole purpose on my motorbike . I can set my A to B points, once I've selected start , I can the go back to the route, tap the screen on the road you want to ride and the system will automatically re-route using your way point. May be a dumb question but at the end. Once you 'upload' your route to Google maps. It says 'preview' it actually doesn't show me real time directions like Google maps usually does... how do I get it to turn on to real time GPS mapping while riding? Thank you
One question tho. When you add extra "stops" along a route so it will follow a more curvy road, how do you keep the app from prompting you to continue? I wear heavy gloves when riding and found myself having to stop to tell the app to continue the ride.
Is there a way to avoid hitting continue every time you reach a waypoint that was only added to save your route? I set several because I wanted to take certain roads and Google maps would ask "Continue or cancel" or something to that effect. I had to stop and remove my glove to continue
When I make a tour, I may add one or more stops so I can 'force' a certain route. I have no intention to stop at these stops. Whenever I arrive or pass at a stop, Google Maps will require my physical input before continuing, even when I continue riding (both on the already suggested route or a different one). It goes even so far that, because it's no longer navigating, the screen will timeout and I have to unlock it. This will involve stopping along the side of the road, taking of my gloves, trying to unlock with a possibly wet finger (face recognition doesn't work with a helmet on), etc. Why does it not recognize I'm still riding and continue with navigation? I looked up how to turn it off and supposedly there is no way to do that.
Yes, makes Google Maps pretty much useless as a motorcycle navigator. Yet another "developer in windowless room thinking what's best for the user"-thing. Unbelievable how they ruined excellent app.
I too am looking at a solution, the only solution I have found so far, that works is with my Beeline Moto. I can convert a planned ride on google maps with stops (so that we get the correct route) and then convert to GPX and import into Beeline moto. But that does not help other riders who have google maps and phone in pockets.
This is REALLY helpful. When riding the route what do you do when you reach the "stops" that you made along the way? It seems to stop the navigation. Also, what do you do when you are riding a planned route but it gets interrupted with a stop you make, such as gas. How do you get it started and on track again?
I planned my trip like too but the biggest annoyance with this is that once u reach the "fake" destinations or stop during the trip, google maps doesn't automatically start navigating to the next stop. You have to manually tap on continue trip.
I tried doing this but when I opened Google Drive in my phone and clicked on the link, the directions defaulted to the quickest way and not the way I saved?? Do you know why it's doing that? THANKS!
Thé problem with Google Maps is that every time you arrive at a stop you have to press the screen to continue the route. Impossible to do on a moving bike with gloves on.

You can, but if you accidentally close out of the GPS, it messes everything up. We now use a full trip link, as well as a list of segment links just in case.
Because of the problem I mentioned in my previous comment of the app prompting me to continue the ride at every "fake stop", I have instead been using a My map with my desired route. On Android, you can solve that with Automagic (or Tasker) so it detects the prompt and automatically pushes the "Continue" button for you. That's what I did before getting a Garmin zumo.
@@mbirth Any chance you can give a quick explanation of how to set up this flow in Automagic? This will be a game changer for me. I've been using Google Maps as my GPS but I have to stop at every stop point because I keep my phone in my pocket.

For that reason alone, I use InRoute. It allows waypoints as pass through points. Unfortunately it is not as well known as Google Maps so it's a challenge to share
Plus you can hit the 360° view and view the roads you want to take and see what the roads look like so you know there all good roads to ride.. that's the best part.. we have some real shot roads here in Mi so that comes in handy
Hey man. I like this. It's actually pretty similar to what I've been doing for a long time. Your addition of google Sheets and links is a smart one. Good idea. Here's the problem I have. When I create a route with say half a dozen way points, Google Maps stops when I reach a way point / destination. It waits for me to acknowledge that I have reached my "destination" before moving on to the next way point / destination. Totally inconvenient if my phone is in my pocket and I'm just listening to directions through earbuds. Making convoluted routes like you do, often a way point is just a place where I make a turn. And I'm not going to ram mount the phone because I'm riding off road and don't want the phone getting damaged. You see my problem here?
I have the same problem. Google Maps assumes I want to stop at every waypoint so it stops giving directions when a waypoint is reached. It’s not a convenient way to choose bike friendly routes.
@@daveburch235 - Try InRoute - I started using it for that exact reason. I was also hoping this video was going to show a solution to the issue with google maps as it's much easier to share & everyone knows how to use it!

I have tried several times to get the google maps to be accurate. Everyone in my club loves the detailed listing of routes but here is the problem. I make a custom route on google maps and then save the link and attach to the spread sheet. When I email it to people and myself, the google map route that appears after clicking the link is not the same route I saved. It is defaulting to the fastest route. How do I fix this? Have you experienced the same problem with saving google map routes as a link?
Good video. Learned a few things in there myself. Am a Garmin / Basecamp user myself in the main but this definitely was useful and am pretty sure would be useful to me even when planning routes as a back up to my Garmin. Good effort thanks
Great video thanks. Only question I have is that it seems not possible to start the navigation when you are not at the start location ? Only the preview is then an option.
Absolutely, the problem is turn by turn navigation. That is the ultimate million dollar question. You have simply shared a map. Google has not implemented turn by turn navigation for a custom route.
Once the map is displayed on your phone, did you tried to add a new stop at the beggining with your location? It enables you to click on "Start navigation" route from your location to the first point of the route
@@s1dew1nd3r4 yes, Google maps shows a pop up message requesting something like "tap to continue" to continue navigation to the next point of the route you made. I reccomend you to try first a route in your area to see google maps behaviour to get used to.
Hi, Thanks for the content! I’ve been using GM for groups rides for years as well. Have you found out how to add more than 10 points? And, have you tried to transfer your maps into a Garmin? Or, do you only use your phone?
Hey there, if I ever have a route that needs more than the max points allowed, I just create another file. I have not tried to transfer the points though. I always use my phone.
You can get around the 10 point limitation by starting a new route from the last point in the previous route. The challenge is riding through the pass through points without pulling over to modify your route. Once you reach a "stop", google maps will keep trying to route to that point until you reroute which requires interaction with the application meaning an actual stop
BNB, This was a fantastic video. Have you ever considered utilizing Google My Maps and including times and route links in the notes so you can take advantage of the benefits of Google My Maps? I believe you have demonstrated a great method of using Google Maps and Google Sheets. I feel the features of Google My Maps would further improve your fantastic approach if you do longer rides where you include all types of stops in the Google My Maps map.
Great idea but unfortunately a lot of people watching this won't figure this out when they have no cell service. The route needs to be on the phone and offline maps loaded before you leave. Probably best to just export a file and send it. Lot of offline apps use kml or gpx.
This was an awesome video!!! You don’t know how much I’ve wanted to do this for our bike trips, but could never figure it out. Keep up the great work!! Thanks so much!!! Ride safe buddy!
May I ask, once the route is saved, how do I then open it and start it as my navigation on my mobile? I see many asking the same question but cannot find any "how to's" that show the end result and how to begin navigation.
Great vid. On the routes with "waypoints" does Google jump to the next waypoint after you pass the first, or do you have to tell Google to jump to the next waypoint? Thanks for the vid!
Ok video! Can this be used for on board navigation systems all the major players are putting on the new bikes? ( I own a 2022 Honda Goldwing) I think the download off Google for interruption of cell service will be a bit much for my cellphone with limited storage (64 gb),. Are the routes convertible to a “gpx. File”? GPX files are uploadable to the ‘not the best’, Honda on board Navigation , off a thumb drive.
LOVE IT! I have used google sheets and planed my cross country ride and back. Never thought about the link to route so I will incorporate that into my spreadsheet. Great job!
I don’t group ride. Motorcycle’s are not weekends only thing for me. I get a kick out of let’s go ride out to the country side. Well my driveway is a mile long. I normally ride a triumph scrambler or a Xl350r.
Google Maps on iOS doesn’t seem to care about the intermediate stops set up on Google Maps on the desktop. All the link passes to iOS seems to be the beginning and end points and the route gets recalculated.
If I design a route with multiple stops (showing as A, B, C, etc) when I hit start it only gives directions section by section. Is there a way I can set it up to get directions from start to finish please?
Appreciate the info. Since there is a limit of waypoints, if I was planning 10-12 day trip from TN to WA and back, I would need to break that up in multiple legs? Also after trip is planned , can it be downloaded to the Garmin Zumo XT? Thanks
Very good and informative video. I didn't know Google maps and sheets could be combined so usefully. Will be using this for bike trips in the future. Keep on biking!

That's a good point. Touchscreen gloves are a must for me so didnt think of that as an issue.
@@BikeNBird yeah I should probably stop being cheap and go pick some up.
John Warren Just lick your glove (not the entire glove)🤢
On Android, you can solve that with Automagic (or Tasker) so it detects the prompt and automatically pushes the "Continue" button for you. That's what I did before getting a Garmin zumo.
@@mbirth Any chance you can give a quick explanation of how to set up this flow in Automagic? This will be a game changer for me. I've been using Google Maps as my GPS but I have to stop at every stop point because I keep my phone in my pocket.
Awesome. Thanks buddy. About to set up some group rides for followers to come on with me - you've made life easier... 😊🌟🏍️
This as great! I use a similar system for my trips but will use Sheets from now on since it’s more organized than Docs. Thanks!
Killer help dude! I wish I had found this video last year when I did a 43 day, 14,000 miles trip. Thanks!!
Thank you for that information I was going crazy with the Google Map trying to figure out how to do that I looked up online it seem like no one had any real answers stumbled across yours it has been very beneficial for me thank you. Keep up the good work.👍🏍🏍🏍
How do you get google maps to automatically continue directions to the next waypoint without having to stop and touch the screen?
Have the same question/problem.
For that reason alone, I use InRoute. It allows waypoints as pass through points. Unfortunately it is not as well known as Google Maps so it's a challenge to share
You can use an app like tasker to do it for you if on android
Calimoto Motorcycle app..just found it...seems cool
curious...when you do the legs with the multi stops to get custom direction, how do you get turn by turn to not stop after getting to the first point.
It usually asks you if you want to continue. You can pull over but I’ll wet my glove (suck it 😆 ) and touch yes, especially if I have a group in tow.
Really good! Thank you! I was pulling my hair out with Gaia maps!
The problem you described is exactly why I started looking for an alternative to Google Maps. I was hoping the video would suggest a solution.
@@daveburch235 - Try InRoute - I started using it for that exact reason. I was also hoping this video was going to show a solution to the issue with google maps as it's much easier to share & everyone knows how to use it!
@@steveradogna9564 soooo damn it. I just planned a route (first time) and already shared it with my dudes. It has 10 waypoints🤦🏻♂️. So you’re telling me when I arrive at a waypoint it’s gonna wait for me to acknowledge something on the screen?
I have tried several times to get the google maps to be accurate. Everyone in my club loves the detailed listing of routes but here is the problem. I make a custom route on google maps and then save the link and attach to the spread sheet. When I email it to people and myself, the google map route that appears after clicking the link is not the same route I saved. It is defaulting to the fastest route. How do I fix this? Have you experienced the same problem with saving google map routes as a link?
I have the same problem. Can't get the route I saved to come up. Only the fastest.
Good video. Learned a few things in there myself. Am a Garmin / Basecamp user myself in the main but this definitely was useful and am pretty sure would be useful to me even when planning routes as a back up to my Garmin. Good effort thanks
I’m planning one of those “Epic” cross country trips. I have been looking for something like this! 2 lane roads the whole way! Thank you!
My wife and I are taking 6000+ mile trip in June. We already have things mapped and daily itineraries. Thanks again!
@@bobklaege5569 i hope i can do something like this one day.. great job.. really love to hear someones story, greetings from Indonesia 👍
the "avoid highways" button is your friend
Great video thanks. Only question I have is that it seems not possible to start the navigation when you are not at the start location ? Only the preview is then an option.
Edit stops on your phone, add new stop "Your location" as first stage, click "Finish" and you are set to navigate.
Well done Sir and thanks for taking the time to make the video. I got a few great ideas from it and also a BIG thumbs up from me.
Can the ride be exported to a .gpx file so it can be loaded into your bike's GPS instead of using your phone for navigation
No, but it can be downloaded as a KML and then converted to gpx ;)
thats all good but where is the start navigation after all this ?
exactly.....I created a map but I'm by myself so I need navigation to tell me where to go
Absolutely, the problem is turn by turn navigation.
@@jesusmorenobernardino1917 What about the second point? third point etc? will it continue onto those once its running?
Very useful. Thank you. I use an app called Calimoto, selects random routes etc.
Thank you so much How can i connect the separate legs of a trip so I can see the entire route at one time thanks again.
Super helpful video thanks a ton!
Ride safe buddy!
great !! will i be able to navigate the route from my mobile google maps app ?
Absolutely brilliant. I am so happy I seen this one. It opens a whole new avenue of sharing.
Thank you. This is great. I don't have to install Japan Navigation Maps on my Indian RoadMaster since its a US Spec model.
Google knows everything about where you are, anytime. Full access to your phone
Thanks for the tips.
Hey Google, how about a twisty preferred button next to the avoid highway & tolls button!
May I ask, once the route is saved, how do I then open it and start it as my navigation on my mobile? I see many asking the same question but cannot find any "how to's" that show the end result and how to begin navigation.
Thanks for sharing, good info and handy to know for any group travelling for a short trip or longer.
Great vid. On the routes with "waypoints" does Google jump to the next waypoint after you pass the first, or do you have to tell Google to jump to the next waypoint? Thanks for the vid!
is there a way to create the route in Google maps using the route you want, then save it as a GPX file to download in the Harley GPS?
How do you add the routes into your GPS? Satellite coverages is much better than cell and GPS shows live location.
This is great. Especially for the camera guy/drone pilot who stops and then needs to catch up. Thanks for sharing.
Some great tips and I try to follow but when I share it keeps going for quickest route. Going to share on my bike page also. Thanks
The best tutorial. Thanks from and ADV rider from South Australia.
Outstanding concept. This will be a huge help for me planing trips. Thanks for sharing the idea.
LOVE IT! I have used google sheets and planed my cross country ride and back. Never thought about the link to route so I will incorporate that into my spreadsheet. Great job!
Very helpful. I definitely enjoyed and will be using this system. Thanks for the video.
cool man. this will be very helpful. thanks for putting this together.
I done similar routes. Normally I option out of highways then plan. Appreciate the video.
Hooah
I don’t group ride. Motorcycle’s are not weekends only thing for me.
I get a kick out of let’s go ride out to the country side.
Well my driveway is a mile long. I normally ride a triumph scrambler or a Xl350r.
I like your approach. My question is now how can I call up those legs on my iPhone and navigate them vis CarPlay on the new Honda Gold Wing.
Google maps is a great tool. Make sure you use satellite view to make sure your not being lead to a logging road.
Good call! In south Texas logging isn't a thing, but we have to make sure it's not a ranch road so same thing I suppose
Thanks for sharing. Very simply explained
But... how do you ride the route with your phone? How do you start the ride? In short: what should I do after the route is in my phone?
Google Maps on iOS doesn’t seem to care about the intermediate stops set up on Google Maps on the desktop. All the link passes to iOS seems to be the beginning and end points and the route gets recalculated.
You can't just drag and drop the route. You have to add destinations instead.
thank you for sharing this google maps tips and tricks.. this is really helpful.. god bless you 🙏
If I design a route with multiple stops (showing as A, B, C, etc) when I hit start it only gives directions section by section.
Saved routes only coming up as fastest between start and finish. Not as was saved on my desktop. How did you work around this to have the routes properly show up on your phone?
Also is there a way to turn on the voice prompts in case i want to hear them through my cardo system?
That was pretty cool. I don't have a computer, although I do use Google maps. I really like the sheets application. Getting ready for about a 2000 mile ride next month. I'll be solo there and back just due to circumstances. Maybe I can borrow a computer and then send it to my phone. Thank you
Good explanations!
Thanks for sharing
But do you have Google hands free voice navigation. That is what I am wishing to accomplish.
Very helpful. I am planning a bucket list ride this coming June from Florida to Jackson Hole Wy. It has been a challenge to determine distances per day as I might be optimistic to cover about 400 to 450 a day. Wanting to do as much scenic riding as possible to get the most enjoyment out of this jpurney
Are you planning a ride to Paris? If so I definitely want to get in on that, even though it is way the hell outta my way...
Yessir! We're doing a texas round up hitting almost every dealer up ih35
Thanks this was awesome. Can't wait to use this for some weekend getaways in the driftless area!
Good tutorial. I plan on trying this with myself. Thank you brother.
If you guys decide to take a ride to Junction T.X. that's 2hrs west of you straight down I-10 let me know I will defiantly join you guys for lunch. Don't know if the club would let a none member ride with y'all for a bit but if so I would join for that too.
