@Retro Upgrade - Yeah it was good to meet another YT creator @all - This guy, Carlos, has a small YT channel he is just starting and by chance he lives 15 minutes from me! Which is strange as I live in a 'remote' location (Canary Islands). We had a real good chat yesterday and a couple of hours went very quickly. Carlos is very knowledgeable on retro games consoles and similar tech from the 80s onwards, does some very interesting stuff such as farbricating spare parts (CDROM spindles etc) by 3D printing and 3D design - We think we can definitely do some fun things together and I gave him some faulty retro 80s home computer hardware to play with. Check his channel out, there will be some more videos coming soon.
I have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX970 of the same vintage. Gigabyte did a hacky trick on these cards, they have more monitor connections than can be simultaneously supported by the gpu. They make this work by having a dual bios, the relevant bios being selected on boot by which combination of monitors is hooked up. Flashing the bios is "interesting" as you have to boot into the correct target bios by connecting a monitor to the correct port. I also found the latest bios from Gigabyte was not stable and had to revert to an older one.
Congrats on the repair, yes uploading of random BIOS files is quite common amongst overclockers and people wanting the highest scores on 3d mark for bragging rights. Its become increasingly more prelevant with the LHR cards on Nvidia's 3000 series and people trying random hacks to bypass for mining purposes.

This is a common issue, bga graphic chipset failure. When the driver is installed, there is no display. Silicone bumps under the dye are often damaged due to card usage (hot/cold). Sometimes, a reflowing the bga chipset resolves the issue for temporary.
Great fix! Its a shame the previous owner didnt use an anti-sag bracket for the GPU. The heavier cards, especially triple fan cards, will sag causing the PCB to deform over time. Otherwise, that 980ti should work very well!

Seems so many people have such an issue soldering. Soldering is not difficult, soldering properly takes time and practice. Then when you see some of the jobs filmed on TH-cam its not surprising. Greetings from the Dominican Republic, I have a question, I hope you can answer me, I'm looking for an IC named 7303 CCVV, but when I search in Google, it doesn't appear as I should look for it?
Do you need to reflash the bios on an external device? Does nvflash not work in linux, or even in Windows with the drivers unloaded (or not yet loaded) ?
Not sure - but using an external programmer will allow you to flash BIOS chips even from GPU that will not detect in linux and motherboards that will not boot - so it is an invaluable technique (and piece of kit) to use
I have a problem with my 980 Ti and a search to fix it brought me here - you obviously know what you are doing and I have no confidence to fix this thing myself.. it has 1 long beep, 3 short and then 1 after and card not detected, I am currently having to go back to my 660 GTX which is painful in comparison. It has never been overclocked (not whilst I've had it for 5 years anyway), just last month I cleaned it all up along with undusting etc the pc also, I put Nano Diamond paste on it and just the other night it just stopped working whilst I was playing an online game. I wish someone like you lived near me .. I suck+ at soldering.. and really would love hands on help in learning.. yt vids doesn't seem to help, ppl on discord try to help..but that doesn't replace someone smacking your hand if you make a mistake :/
Tony Nameless. This is not a criticism it is my opinion, but I will voice it anyway As I have mentioned several times in various videos, you should start with a box full of 'worthless' cards - HD 68xx HD 78/79xx, GTX 2,5,6,7 series and similar. You can probably get a job lot of faulty ones for like for £100 or something. Then try to fix them, fix VRM, run diagnostics tests, swap RAM around, swap GPUs around, reprogram BIOSes.... EVERYTHING you need to learn to fix the latest generations of GPU, you can learn by fixing the older ones! And when you make mistakes, because you will, then it does not really matter. Once you can fix that type of card with a good success rate then move on to the newer ones. Here is a challenge - get a job lot of old 'obsolete' cards, say 10 of them spares/repair. Fix as many as you can. Then go to 'sold' ebay listings and work out how much your fixed cards would be worth (even if they are costing you £10 each faulty and they are worth £25 each fixed). If you can work through the whole lot and end up with double the amount you payed or more, then move on a bit. Don't cheat yourself, class any cards that were just working anyway as break even - no profit no loss. Two other - some cards far more 'least' than the GTX 1070 are worth far more money - have a look at old voodoo 4 and voodoo 5 cards. GTX 980 ti and GTX 1070 have practically identical performance according to User Benchmark gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-980-Ti-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1070/3439vs3609 so what makes one more worth repairing than the other? Actually I I'm very interested to hear other opinions on this - is Tony's view right, Am I right or are both opinions equally valid for different reasons? And please don't side with me just because it is my channel. 😉
I didn't know that the 980Ti was only 6Gb. That was kind of shocking. The 980m in my laptop is 8Gb, so what is the advantage of the To version over a regular 980?
Its not all about memory size. The mobile version is likely much slower. Clocked lower, has less cores, probably slower clocks on memory itself among many other factors that determine how good a card performs.
@@LearnElectronicsRepair When I initially watched without paying a whole lot of attention, I thought you basically injected some kind of config into the UEFI/BIOS of the motherboard to force it to setup as if a device was there that it couldn't read. Something that could bypass a bad VBIOS; and I was like "HOLY SHIT, I knew it could be done"... but... oh well. I have a tesla M40 that I think I either fried the BIOS chip on, or PCIe interface, or other 3.3 volt inputs on the core; schematic shows quite a few 3.3 ins directly to the core. 12 volts touched USB power and maybe data lines. Might have caused spike on 3.3 volt rail of PSU, 12 volts may have arced through chipset and a bunch of PCIe devices. Not sure yet.
Weirdest part is I put the M40 in another board that wasn't dead, it showed in device manager, then never again and THAT board also doesn't POST now either.

I wish someone like you lived near me .. I suck+ at soldering.. and really would love hands on help in learning.. yt vids doesn't seem to help, ppl on discord try to help..but that doesn't replace someone smacking your hand if you make a mistake :/
can that backplate fit to gigabyte gtx 770 sir?
good stuff , enjoyed it
Great stuff!
980 TI worth repair ?
I am just starting with these cards and to me it sems like 1070 is the least it should be.
Tony Nameless. This is not a criticism it is my opinion, but I will voice it anyway
As I have mentioned several times in various videos, you should start with a box full of 'worthless' cards - HD 68xx HD 78/79xx, GTX 2,5,6,7 series and similar.
what country are you in? can I send you my haul of gpus 1660, 970, 780, 980ti etc
Hi, do you have an ebay store?
Excellent subscribed 👍
Welcome aboard!
Do you have a re-baller?
Yes
how could this happen?
32:10 VGA compatible controller: Nvidia corporation GM200 "it's not seeing this card"
Yeah I got that wrong. The method for forcing a GPU to initialise ignoring video ram errors is a good one though.
Great job
Good repair to fix a double whammy video card.
My guy is playing pc bulding simulator irl
well done, can I send you my 980ti?
good job!
