This is the most underrated game ever. At least it got a world record for the largest video game map.
... on consoles. The game with the largest map to date is The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall at 62,394 square miles. It's as big as the state of Georgia. To put that into comparison, Fuel's map is 5,560 square miles. Yup.

Daniel Brennan this is actually bigger I think you were watching the "top 10 biggest maps" video witch had many things wrong in it. The only thing bigger than this is minecraft but that is randomly generated. I saw this one guy who did all the research and said that fuel is 20x bigger than Dagger fall. Not sure if true but file is in fact bigger.

It would work so much better on next gen, maybe a remaster on next gen with randomly generated storms in free ride such as tornadoes and I think it would be what we all expected nearly a decade ago. Trust me, it would work this time around. Codemasters get on it.

This is what I exactly searching for. A racing game which includes dirt, bikes, cars and all kind of vehicles.
Just a heads up, the Motorstorm franchise on PS3 has this stuff and it's incredibly fun. There are 3 Motorstorm games on PS3 and they're all way ahead of their time.

no doubt fuel was heavily inspired by mad max. its definitely one of the reasons why they called it fuel. in a world like that fuel is a very valuable resource. i think the title fits. one look at the box art and you Instantly know what kind of game it is. the fact that it's the biggest open world game that came out between daggerfall and Minecraft is just a sweat cherry on top of an excellent game.
I genuinely have no idea why people hate this game. The gameplay is challenging and very fun once you are used to it, the map is of surprisingly good quality gameplay wise considering its quantity, the vehicle variety is insane, the vehicle designs are cool, the artstyle is phenomenal, and it has a unique and distinguished vibe that was surprisingly notable despite many comparable post-apocalyptic games in the era.
They hate this game because it’s not some boring simulation racer that all these gamers and critics jerk off to. You should check out the game Nail’d. it’s another fun unrealistic off-road racer that’s just as fun as FUEL.
Because the in-game world is empty, and everything feels the same.

underrated, undervalued.
games like this and driveclub will only be appreciated by a select few gamers. the rest will either never even experience and most who do just wont get it. franchises like forza and nfs get all the attention when theres masterpieces such as this in the shadows.
This game started out decent, then quickly went downhill. The handling on everything is pretty bad, and the AI can take turns much sharper and quicker than you can. I hit a wall with about 35% of the map unlocked, and I couldn't bring myself to suffer through it to at least go for one of the achievements I wanted.

I got this game in a bundle with The Force Unleashed. I forgot all about it and a year later I just randomly tried out the game and I was mind blown.

It pisses me off no one really recognizes or appreciates this game anymore. Up until some other games, it had things racing games didn't usually have. An EXTREMELY huge map to free roam on. A bigger variety of vehicle types. And ESPECIALLY the extreme weather. It is an instant classic in my opinion and is my favorite game EVER. This game needs to be more known.

To me Fuel is kind of a relaxing game or you can make it a tense one all at your own pace. collecting cars, seeing the progression of each category of vehicles grow with stronger performers.
Still, I can't help but wonder what a Fuel 2 would've been like.
if only this game had nitro and/or weapons

if you have to go as far as personally feeling something and looking carefully i dont call that a conceptual nitro boost (i have the game), there is no button that increases your speed by 10% or even less for that matter (burnout, need for speed, freestyle metal x, motorstorm ... pretty much every arcade racer) .. in the end it misses it imo. Even if the speed automatically increased by a conciderable margin when you reach a surthen speed that would be a horrible game mechanic.
This reminds me of Motorstorm.
Motorstorm is a extremely fun game, and I advise everyone to buy it if they have a PS3.
I mean it is so detailed and action-packed.

***** Not everything, only environment stuff like trees if I'm not wrong. Towns, dungeons, and some areas are static. Arena is the one that is randomly generated.
***** Also there was a 1989 PC game set in post apocalyptic second ice age. From what I remember, the map was bigger than even Elder Scrolls Arena, it was the biggest video game map in history. Sorry I forgot the title.

You could play this game with your buds an entire weekend and still see so little the game has to offer and have so much fun.
I actually drove across the map from one corner to the other, non stop, used the roads and timed myself, it took 8 hours!

I remember I got this game really cheap for the 360 years ago and did like it but for some reason I sold it a week or so later, seeing this definitely makes me want to buy it again. I have the Driving Force GT for the PS3 but this doesn't look like it would be very fun or necessary to use a wheel, as long as both versions are the same I'd probably get the Xbox version again.
I just got this game for PS3 today. Its much better using a wheel and pedals for this. Driving around the vast wasteland using the wheel and pedals is amazing!
The map isnt the whole USA, its in the shape of the US and has a bunch of citys scattered around. One of the devs said in the fastest car and on the most direct route it would take 45 minutes to get from one side of the map to the other.
I came here after watching the Best of 2013 RT Recap.
This game is very very good, unique as well and brings back good memories of summer 2009, shame it's so underrated
I like how they use the title Fuel as it feels like a Metallica reference.
Don't forget that there are also tornadoes.

Yes. i have spent years wanting a simulator to be relised that actually has customisation to the cars. and not just stage 1-4 engine upgrades. all the games that start to look good turn out to be an arcade game. i also very much like simulators

@unhappy4life9 this is a different game. There was a different racing game called Fuel that was supposed to come out on the original Xbox in like 2004. It was a wide open world where you had to get from point a to point b any way possible. You started on foot, then could get in a bunch of different vehicles (land, sea, and air), and when it ran out of gas, you had to jump out and find a new one.
Ok i LOVE mx games. i have always LOVED atv offroady fury games and even the nurnout series but i HATED this game. it was just so repetative. it felt like the same thing over and over. and itgot very boring. it felt alot like the first motor storm with ever race haveing dirt and mud but nothing els like snow or mabey some volcanoes or something cool. so i sold this and got MX VS ATV REFLEX and i LOVE that game.
oh don't even try anymore, even when I had the game in late 2010 the online was EMPTY, absolutely nobody plays online, the way it's meant to work is hard to explain so I'll say it's exactly the same as TDU2, while you're exploring you would have a chance of meeting random people, or you could specifically search for an online race

I was really hoping this game was gonna be awesome but yet wheres the sense of speed and destruction?It reminds me of 4x4 evolution alot of free roaming area to race but yet the races are boring but oh well.I guess ill keep playing motorstorm until DIRT 2 comes out.
it looks ok...but there doesnt look to be any vehicle combat, and using your vehicle to ram the others into their deaths....something you think post apocalyptia would have, i guess people havent quite gone so mad yet >_>
I had this game a few times. Really enjoyed it, but for some reason sold it again. I guess I'll go to the store tomorrow and pick it up again. It's only €7,- now...
Playing it for the first time as one of the final relaxing experiences I play before diving back into the deep end of Elden Ring for the DLC. Fully completed two map sections so far minus the skins and vistas. Managed to get the game to support 3440x1440 with a registry edit too so that helps a lot.
not this then, this really isn't anything like burnout, this is more like Motorstorm or MX vs ATV, if you want a game like burnout I would suggest a game called "Split/Second: Velocity"
If you check out the dictionary and look for the word "absolute boredom", Fuel is one of the definitions. It's just so damn boring game, had the potential for much more but came out lame.

Important Technical Note: For the 360, you MUST install this game on to your HDD from the disc, or get the on demand version, either way. Because, this game (when running solely off the disc), will FREEEEZE, often..
Installing it to the HDD remedy's this problem.
This is a must for any one who loves just free roaming. Plus its perfect to use the custom soundtrack feature.
@TheStas324 Yeah, I'm just writing for fun here. I do own the game for the pc and it is still boring eventhough I've been playing it forwards.
The GPS in the game is totally flawed. On one racer, I couldn't complete it because of the GPS, plus AI racers go missing and you end up being last, there's no way to catch up. The graphics are ace and it plays decent, depending on the vechicle. Codemasters have knocked out 3 dodgy racers which are this, Grid and the F1 series. Odd how their other racers play fine, but Dirt 2 is terrible with a wheel.
Other game developers should get a good use of this Technology, you know like, Grand Theft Auto. It amazes me how all that world, environment, and other stuff like buildings, and mountains fit on a single Disk! Imagine if Rockstargames used this Tech. You know how fun GTA is right? Now Imagine the world, with Multiple citys, in High Definition! I don't know if GTA will make it onto one disk considering the fact that GTA has a ton of stuff to do. This game looks fun, but Rockstar would Impress...

Regarding the graphics, I guess because the map is huuuuuuuuge, its impossible to have top notch graphics without a bunch of loading screens, that and the fact that the visual range is huge as well. I personally prefer that above excellent graphics. A matter of opinion though...
can you go wrong with codemasters? Deffinitely not. But.. I think about the offroad department codemasters should do a WRC game.. The current racing physics of the company are so good and rewarding that it would be real pity not to have a WRC game with this kind of handling. I mean ok dirt 2 is good (want to make it clear that DIRT 1 didn't have nice handling) and funny but who wouldn't like this racing physics in colin macrae 2 like game? I think that many ppl would agree with me.
@contracts47 this game wasn't made to copy motorstorm. it was made to showcase offroad racing with NO boundaries whatsoever. correct me if i'm wrong, but that's not motorstorm. Pretty sure they still have limitations on where you can go during a race. the game has massive environments with varied types of layouts, unlimited choices as to how you go about winning a race, and there's no other game like it. it's not perfect, but it is in a category of its own.
Also if you are taking graphics into account there is no damage and thats also somthing the gameengine lacks, if i am to crash a car at 100k's into a wall its going 2 get crushed not bounce off the wall. Im not saying gt isnt a good game but its def not near as realistic as other games so it doesnt really count as a simulator because it doesnt simulate driving properly. Its doing a good job but with the Softwear they have today its def not living up to the name of 'the real driving simulator'

Mate if your saying that graphics helps with the physics then u have a real problem. however if your just saying graphics makes it look more real your 100% but just because it has the best graphics doesnt mean the physics of the game is good enough. the amount of stuff they dont have in that game to make it real is amazingly big.
So what u can break down. u can break down in gta4. mate Grandtorismo is missing a hell of alot of stuff that makes a game a sim. if a game that has all the factions of real life driving in it and 8-bit graphics i would call that a sim. if a game hasnt got the facters i wouldnt call that a sim. gt is good but considering the amount of things they didnt put in the game its not a real sim. its just like forza. both arnt real sims they might be good sims for what they are but they have alot missing
Gran torismo isnt a simulator. live for speed is. Gran torismo was good for the first 1 but all they did was put more cars and races in and make the graphics better. forza still isnt real enough. need for speeds are arcade and even if they tryed to make a sim i dont think its going to be that much better than gt or forza.
anyway mate, I'm guessing you dont know a what a real simulator is, only the mainsteam games that call themself sims that rather have good graphics over good physics.
The game looks sick. But the driving seems really unrealistic, or is it just me? meh :\ maybe if I find it at a low price I pick it up, otherwise, the vid didnt convince me ( not the reviewer's fault tought ) and it would be so much awesome with rocket launchers lol . Kinda reminds me of carmaggedon, but without peds getting roadkilled, giant monkeys destroying cities and nukes.
You can do a lot of on road racing/driving too in this.
Actually i prefer driving on the road as opposed to off road.
The roads are more scenic and you have much more grip so you go much faster on tarmac in cars, which is fun and also sometimes the fastest way to get from a to b.
And this game is literally gigantic! It'll easy take upto 3-4 hours to drive from one end of the map to the other.
I like the game, but I actually think theres too little content. 14,000 sq km is way too big for just racing (of several types) and some minor mini-missions. Hell, I'm pretty sure even games like GTA IV or Saints Row would have too little content for such a large area. Ambitious and certainly fun, but short of the mark is what I think.
I actually really disliked it. Theres no handbrakes, no way to change your graphics, the mouse is practicly useless throughout the game and ingame menues, there is ovbious re-used scenery and finally it has windows live games which is really really annoying and time consuming
On a personal scale i'd call it a 1.5/10 to be honest

This game from what i understan uses procedural textures. look up .kkrieger, a game thats only 96kb big it came from the same tech. That is what makes this game so special. if it used the standard form the way games are made this game would have easily filled up 2 Blue-ray disks, but since it uses procedural textures it takes up only a DVD.
They tried to make an open world Motorstorm here, and failed. Just because the world is massive, it doesn't make it great especially when there is nothing to do. Also, the generic guitar solos are boring and uninspiring. And any game that tells me that my monster truck is poor off road immediatly earns my disrespect.
Oh come now dude, surely you should already know that Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall holds the title for largest playable area ever created within a game. Daggerfall is a ridiculous 62,394 square miles (and no that's not a typo, I really do mean 62,394 sq miles). It would take days, maybe even weeks to cross from one side of the map to the next.
Cant w8 for it 2 come out. If it has been delayed for so long they must be spending time on trying to do things right. will be a good game, not saying it wont :) just saying its probs not going to be as realistic as other simulators, Still not every1 wants a perfect sim do they. and if all games were perfect they would all be boring eh ;)
Fuel is the Poor mans version of Motostorm.Fuel is so bland,repetive and the area's is to sandboxy for my taste.irony is the biggest strenght of this game is the content and huge areas but it fails at the execution and becomes a weak point in the game instead.There is much better games out there like:Grid,Dirt,Motostorm etc.
Don' pay attention to the bad reviews.... I rented it because I was hesitant, and they game is really good. The first few races are nothing special, but it gets amazing after a little while. Trust me, just rent it. I'll buy it when it gets cheaper. Its not perfect, but still a lot of fun. Look at the gamefaqs message board about it...everyone likes it.
It seems that is quite a copy of Motorstorm... It's good to see that they didn't take everything from Motorstorm, just the whole harsh environment, crazy vehicles thing. To me, it looks like Far Cry 2, Pacific Rift and Vigilante 8 (without the guns =[ ) all mixed into one. I don't think I will buy it; I'd rather have Dirt or Grid and Motorstorm.
No. I don't think so. There is one point in this game which makes it really boring. The gameplay is very good of course but there is nothing to do in this whole map. You can drive one hour and you have seen all things which is in the game I think. There are no submissions, no story and it's easy for anyone. Sorry for my bad english but this is my oppinion I would share. I was really dissappinted from this game because I expectet one of the best postapocalyptic racegames ever.
@Quartrez It may be the largest size wise, it is an entire country essentially, but as you said in your other reply its mostly empty space just with some areas to explore within them. Its not all open space you can just explore at your leasure, that would be amazing though. With Fuel we are looking at over 8.5 thousand quare miles of open terrain that is entirely open for you to explore. I'm not sure how much there is to Daggerfall, I'm sure its up there too, but 8.5k miles is ALOT.
I played this game, and put a review on my channel, but I wish I could be as happy as mark with this game.
Even though it is a arcade racer, I feel they could of heightened the sense of speed.
Also, its a huge map yes, but there is not much to do to compensate for that huge map.
I bought this game with the ATV offroad series in mind, and as much as I loved those games, this game just does not have the offroad type feel I was hoping for.

Looks too simple. Your back tires is just bouncing at a steady pace. The shock isn't reacting to any sort of bump at all. Its like your on a flat surface And your shock has terets. And your just kinda goin str8 str8 turn str8 turn str8 turn. Kinda lame. Just my opinion tho
When i saw this review and you mentioned Burnout, that made me mad. Cause i was 13 Races away from Elite License in Burnout Paradise. I stopped playing the game for about 3 months, sold it. Then my friend gave me another copy of it cause he sold his Xbox. And when i put the game in i realised i had deleted my save.
i dont think that this game is good enough after watching this video..
vehicle is just running and running in a beautiful environment and no resistance from grass or mud or anything, no skidding etc. i mean the vehicle is running with same speed on mud and road.. no realism here..
we have so many better games to play.. why should we play this!!
This game is definitely impressive but, I think the driving system was abit off.
The vehicles never really felt like they were driving on dirt paths or tarmac road, they felt like they were 'gliding' over a surface.
If they'd worked more on the driving, this game would've been amazing.
To me this game is more of an adventure game. If you buy it just for the racing you might be disappointed. But I like to drive around and see the sights. There have been many "wow" moments with the view. It's almost completely if you can see it, you can drive there.
NOTE: i REALLLLY loved Motorstorm Pacific Rift on the PS3... so i suppose it would be pretty cool if there was a game just like it but on the xbox 360, and i know that fuel looks like it but i would like to know about other games..... and thanks for any help ;)
i know, all his reviews are much more honest than the other reviewers like ign and gamespot. ign and gamespot do okay reviews sometimes, but based on little things on certain games, they would criticize it terribly. at least this guy here goes more personal like a real gamer rather than its reputation

this game is shit because the game itself turns all AIs against you. I agree when you say "the cars feel unnatural". I'm about to cross the finish line in 1st when my car just turns and respawns for no reason. needless to say, I lose. Put a decent A.I. and this game is just awesome.
This is an excellent game for those of you who dont mind a few graphics generation glitches, and an unrealistic platform. If you like things more realistic, go with mx vs. atv reflex. I do have to say i love that you can drive all day, and not get to the other side.
