I couldn't believe the title of this video! I thought I was the only one who was in love with both that apartment and the bookshop. Thanks for making this!
In 2005, I visited NYC, and signed up for a guided tour of famous sites from the movies. The shop that was used as Kathleen Kelly's Shop Around the Corner was one of our stops. I can't remember the name of the shop, but the proprietor sold antiques and cheeses -- a combination that I found quite surprising and whimsical. But what really struck everyone on the tour was how unbelievably TINY the shop was. It looks 3 times larger on film than it does in real life! Everyone was aghast! The tour guide explained something about how 2-dimensional film can really alter the look of 3-dimensional spaces and objects. Fascinating.
The You’ve Got Mail apartment is one of my favorite movie/TV homes of all time. It’s so cozy and charming, and you can’t beat living in an Upper West Side brownstone.
Loved that movie and her apartment and bookstore. I wanted that apartment so badly! Whenever I watch these romcoms where the single woman has an apartment I love, all I can think is she is going to have to give up her apartment when they move in together! They will never find anything as charming as that. I also loved her apartment in Sleepless in Seattle.
I adore the cake slice poster in the kitchen. It’s by Cavelinni & Co paper company but was discontinued ages ago. I should have bought it when I had the chance. 😭
Meg Ryan's apartment in this movie gave me a nudge into my current life. I now live in a flat built in 1899, and it is filled with quilts and pillows i was inspired to create after obsessing over that beautiful bed. I also learned that it was okay to throw tissues onto the floor when i am feeling crappy with a runny nose. That trick has been a godsend. 😊
This movie with that apartment has brought me so much joy for so many years. I’ve studied on the apartment and the book store for so long. Thank you for this.
This is my favorite movie and I've spent years obsessing over every detail in her apartment. I wouldn't have guessed I'd have more to learn! Thanks for the work you put into this.
I was able to see inside the brownstone next door years ago. We did a whole You’ve Got Mail day in NYC and while standing outside to get a photo the guy next door was waiting on his foreman to come back and asked if we wanted to go inside to see the renovation. It had five floors and was tiny but beautiful. I couldn’t believe the price tag, over 3 million. Megs apartment is also a full five story brownstone, they just used one floor as her apartment.
@@juliairwin4481I wonder if it’s changed at this point, but then it was a full five story home, not divided up. I would assume it’s still like that. I love how movies create something that really doesn’t exist. Like all the scenes of her coming in the apartment up the stairs had to be created.
I've ALWAYS wanted a Fox Books mug. Even when I worked over ten years for a Seattle based coffee company, when people asked what I did for a living I'd always reply, "I sell legally addictive stimulants."
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this film. Ever since the first time I saw it when I was a kid, in 1998, I've fallen in love with the entire story. It's now a nostalgia piece for me - AOL, chat rooms, not having the internet in your pocket, hearing "You've Got Mail" and it not being a stack of junk mail. The differences in personalities between the two main characters are so well thought out by the set designers and prop masters - Kathleen, the 'enchanting' bookshop owner, living in a country cottage styled Brownstone, always dressed casually and comfortable yet put together.. Joe, the top level corporate aristocracy who lives in an upscale building with a door man and elevator operator, 'old money' decorating who looks expensive even when not in suit and tie. Even the computers they use reflect their personalities: Kathleen uses an Apple PowerBook G3, and Joe uses an IBM ThinkPad at home and an IBM desktop at the office. Kathleen is very down to earth and personable, and Joe is very corporate, very numbers oriented.
I LOVE that the algorithm showed me this video today!! I pay way more attention to the design in films than I do the story, so I feel like I found where I belong here 🥰
I thought I was the only one who did this! We are kindred spirits! As a kid I even paid attention to the cartoon houses like the Flintstones with that window that would repeat if they were running!! The Jetsons and many others..and sitcoms and films as well! ❤😂
Love that movie and the apartment. Would love to see a similar exploration of that gorgeous home in ‘It’s Complicated’ that Meryl Streep was filmed in.

Snuggling down and watching You've got Mail with the kids when they were young is one of my loveliest memories. It's a perfect film...cast, cinematography, locations, script, music, humour and pathos...it has it all. I adore Kathleen's apartment and shop. Thank you for the video👍❤️
My absolute favorite movie, which I've watched over and over again and never tire of it. It's so well done, every little detail and just so charming! (The writing and casting was genius as well)! I've always been obsessed with the apartment, the architecture, beautiful doors and windows and the decor with the amazing mix of patterns and textures.
This is one of my very favorite movies and I enjoyed this video so much! Thank you, thank you for doing it! We watch it every Christmas, even though it's not really a Christmas movie it has Christmas time in it and it's just become a family tradition. Gorgeous apartment!❤
Just discovered your channel. This was fun - one of my fav movies! The bedding with the layers and delicate patterns is very Laura Ashley feeling circa 1990s. It was EVERYWHERE.
i watched this movie when i was still dreaming of living in nyc and now i've lived here for 12 years. i love this movie so much. i always wish for the little shop in the corner to be saved. i dream of having an apartment here in the city with certain aspects of hers such as a huge amount of books and cozy reading nooks. i enjoyed your video very much, the eloquence you applied to all the descriptions on every detail is captivating. thank you so much.

Such a cosy watch for Autumn....I love the cushy, comfy couches....And bookstores, don't get me started! 😅 Anywho, I have subscribed to your channel based on this video!😘
I grew up in Manhattan and ended up not being able to return from Colorado after my divorce (long story!). I watched this movie over and over because it represented my ideal Upper West Side life!
I’m so thrilled that this popped up in my feed. I can’t count how many times I’ve watched this movie and I know most of the dialogue. Tomas, you did a wonderful job describing the sets and highlighting the numerous reasons I watch it again and again. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. ❤
My all time fav movie and Megs apartment and shop around the corner store. Thanks for showing this because can’t wait to watch the movie again. Good luck on your next apartment vid with the cozy vibes. ❤😊
Enchanting apartment. I love this video because I have always felt Kathleen Kelly's apartment was wonderful. So charming, and yes, each detail was sublime !
Oooooh, I adored that film when I saw it as a child! I remember apartment had a greenhouse! A few months ago, SWF was on tv, and I also love that apartment (and Bridget's clothes 😍 ).
Green Card was filmed about 100 yards away from my home (on the NW corner of West 85th Street & Columbus Ave). Sadly, not long after, one of my nearby neighbours, a middle aged French man, somehow managed to get onto the roof and jump to his death. He landed on the sidewalk right next to the apartment block entrance. His body was covered by a white, blood stained sheet for at least 3 hours whilst police investigated the incident. I always avoided walking past that spot (not easy since it led directly to Broadway) in honour of his memory. For a long time, although many of us knew of him, he was a quiet character and we all just kept to ourselves. I often thought about how, if we knew his circumstances, we may have been able to help stop him from making such a horrible decision. You never get over these things and wish you could have changed things. Since then, even though I’m a quiet person myself, I’ll always try to help anyone who I suspect is covering their unhappiness. We all have to help each other.😢 Another neighbour jumped off a building on West 86th Street after he couldn’t get over the death of his beloved dog. Life in the big city always looks great on film….but people are still fragile…….
Shop Around the Corner was also remade as a color musical in 1949 called In the Good Old Summertime starring Judy Garland. It's my favorite version, but I love all three movies!
😂 that opening 🖥️ . I just love what you’ve done to your place. I know you’ve shown it before, but I just had to compliment you on it again 👏. Can’t wait to see this. I’ve always loved this cozy apartment.
The movie "Duplex" also had a home that I used to fantasize about a lot. I have grown up to realise that my favourite parts of romcoms were the sets, costumes, or food.
Brand new here & I never clicked so fast 🎉 I can’t tell you how many dvds I’ve gone through with this movie ❤❤❤. Love love love that you’ve made this film 🎞️
My all time favorite movie and movie set design! The warmth and coziness of Kathleen’s apartment is unmatched. Truly iconic and timeless. Thank you for this video!
Another film, from 1949: In The Good Old Summertime, starring Judy Garland & Van Johnson, has a very similar story. I’m not sure if it’s based on the same original piece of work.
Great insights, Tommy! I love how you highlighted the cozy charm of the 'You've Got Mail' apartment decor. It’s such a perfect blend of nostalgia and timeless style!
This apartment and the apartment in Just Like Heaven (Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo) are my favorite sets of all time and I strive to recreate aspects of them in my home whenever possible. It was so fun to watch a whole episode just on the set! Really loved the video.
So glad I watched this video. I’ve now subscribed. You described the apartment beautifully. So now I am going to rewatch you’ve got mail because it’s been a really really long time since I’ve seen it. Can’t wait to see your videos.
I’ve always loved this movie, but I thought I was the only who loved to watch this repeatedly because of the sets. Love the feel of autumn in the air in the movie, the quaint, lovely bookstore who I wish I could visit and actually buy books there, it’s all magical. Loved also Kathleen Kelly’s apartment, loved the comfy, coziness of the place, and I love how she sits down on the floor ( in one scene ) to eat out of a bowl, how informal !! And I love how it’s also a love story, wishing on a true, true love and whadda you know, he’s been in front of you the whole time !!! Ahhh, talking about this movie makes me want to dig out my old DVD copy and watch it again and again !! Also love to watch Crossing Delancey , love her apartment in that movie too, also Rosemary’s Baby, the Dakota is sooo gothic looking, in this movie. Also-Single, White, and Female, loved the apartment building in that one too. ❤❤❤
This was so fun to watch. YGM is my very favorite movie and I have watched it countless times. It’s my go-to when I really need to relax and comfort myself. And I love the sets so thank you for taking us through them so carefully. Well done!
This is one of my absolute favorite movies! I’ve always loved the cozy design of everything Kathleen touches, especially in comparison to the other spaces shown in the movie. ❤ so glad the algorithm brought me your channel! This was such a lovely, relaxing video.
I was gifted this movie on VHS. I used to watch it at least one a week because I had no cable. It’s one of my favorites ❤ and both of these spaces you have mentioned I was always observing and obsessing over! Love it!
This is my all time favorite movie to watch in the fall and winter holidays or just when I’m in that cozy mood craving the holidays in the summer it’s just so nostalgic. This just makes you want to live in the apartment and visit the little shop around the corner. I fell in love with NY the first time I visited and have been there twice in the fall and winter, there is always so much to see, Ty for sharing this.🫶🍁🍂🎃🦃🎄📖📚🛒
Wow Thomas You've Got Mail is one of my most favorite movies , Just found your channel thank you for the great look at what Kathleen's New yotk brown store really looks like The New York brown Stones and those San Francisco Painted Ladies homes always fascinated me .
I watched that movie over and over. I wrote down every outfit Meg wore and then bought similar. I took notes on the decor and then did similar in parts of my house. I still cry at the ending of that movie. Silly now but didn’t seem like it at the time…..and a friend of mine did the same. 😂
Thank you for taking us through these beautiful spaces! i love this film. her character, and especially the apartment and shop were so cozy, effortless and chic.🙏🏻
What I love about movie decor (staging) is this... certain movies, like the Downton movies, have decor that recreates the ambience from another age and they do it very well. It's a bit easier with high end since people hang on to that. But movies like Have You Got Mail show decor that seems common for the time, but as the movie ages becomes more extraordinary. I remember using AOL back then, but also I remember book shops with this decor. It's funny now the Fox books storefronts are largely gone in favor of online. Seeing these interiors makes me realize how uncommon the bookshop seems after only 30 or so years. How different it will seem in another 20. Almost like viewing the decor of The Thin Man movies now.
Such greats observations!! I personally LOVE shopping for books in person! Discovering used bookstores is my favorite thing! Online shopping can’t recreate that experience!
What a wonderful tour and discussion you've presented, and it was great to see these beautiful sets! Thank you. And this storyline certainly has endured. In addition to the 1937 Hungarian play that you mentioned, Parfumerie, by Miklos Laszlo, I love the the 1940 movie, "The Shop Around The Corner," based on that play (with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan). Following that, there were radio versions of that movie. I also love the 1949 movie musical remake that you mentioned, "In The Good Old Summertime," with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. In 1963, the wonderful gem of a Broadway musical, "She Loves Me," was based on The Shop Around The Corner. In 1996, there was an unofficial remake movie, "Kadhai Kottai," then the 1998 movie, "You've Got Mail" - so there's quite a history to this lasting storyline! Thanks again for sharing your wonderful observations and ideas!
I've watched this .movie SO MANY times, and o oh JUST priced that the layout of the bedroom changes. At the beginning, the bed is angles I to the corner by the bathroom A,few scenes later it's straight on in theroom!!
90s precursor to country cottage , shabby chic !!! Anyone at that time with romantic aesthetic embraced the shabby chic look so let’s give Laura ashwell credit . I collect her deco books .
@@tomasrosaless!its a rom com based in NYC, around a sublet apartment. Richard Dreyfus is the leading man and won an academy award for this film. The theme song won something too. 1978. I almost cry when i hear the song, i have such good memories of watching the film over and over.

Oh, the Green Card apartment, with that beautiful curved staircase and rooftop garden!
So not a film, but in the Parenthood series the grandparents’ big house in Berkeley & their apartment in San Francisco are my favorite!!
Haven't seen it! I'll have to check it out!!
Love the apartment and the movie! And love Ryan and Hanks! And now I have to watch the movie AGAIN! ♥
Totally agree!! Always a great rewatch!
Shop Around the Corner was also remade as a color musical in 1949 called In the Good Old Summertime starring Judy Garland. It's my favorite version, but I love all three movies!
I MUST check it out as soon as possible! Thank you for sharing!!
😂 that opening 🖥️ . I just love what you’ve done to your place. I know you’ve shown it before, but I just had to compliment you on it again 👏.
Can’t wait to see this. I’ve always loved this cozy apartment.
You see what I did there?😂😂 Thank you so much!! I appreciate it!
The movie "Duplex" also had a home that I used to fantasize about a lot. I have grown up to realise that my favourite parts of romcoms were the sets, costumes, or food.
Completely agree! They’re such an important part of the story!
That’s my dream apartment! Thanks for showcasing it so nicely! ❤
A dream! Thank you for watching!
My absolute favourite apartment. It has warmth, character and cosiness. I love it!!!
I totally agree!
@@tomasrosaless I also love the homes in 'Home Again' and 'Spanglish' Would love to see you explore these!! :)
Thank you, love, love, LOVE this movie.
Thank you so much!!
Brand new here & I never clicked so fast 🎉 I can’t tell you how many dvds I’ve gone through with this movie ❤❤❤. Love love love that you’ve made this film 🎞️
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!!!
My all time favorite movie and movie set design! The warmth and coziness of Kathleen’s apartment is unmatched. Truly iconic and timeless. Thank you for this video!
Thank you!! I completely agree!
Absolutely love this. Nora Ephron was amazing at creating cosy worlds and gentle humour. I’m still mad that her shop closed though.
Thank you so much!! And I completely agree!!!
i wish they would release this again in theaters , i have it in cd and watch it at least 3 times in the fall. Its wonderful.
It would be a dream to experience it in theaters!!!
Absolutely one of my very top all time favorite movies!
And your video was amazing, simple, to the point, dude, I subscribed! ♥️♥️

Thank you for watching!! I'm happy you enjoyed!!
Such a beautiful movie!!!
Yes!!!
Another film, from 1949: In The Good Old Summertime, starring Judy Garland & Van Johnson, has a very similar story. I’m not sure if it’s based on the same original piece of work.
I’ve been getting this a lot. I have to give it a go!!!
Great insights, Tommy! I love how you highlighted the cozy charm of the 'You've Got Mail' apartment decor. It’s such a perfect blend of nostalgia and timeless style!
100%! Nostalgic and timeless! Thank you!!!
Lovely details on a favourite movie. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!
This apartment and the apartment in Just Like Heaven (Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo) are my favorite sets of all time and I strive to recreate aspects of them in my home whenever possible. It was so fun to watch a whole episode just on the set! Really loved the video.
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it. I’m glad you enjoyed!!
This totally made me subscribe! Very favorite movie, dream apartment and book shop. ❤
Thank you so much!!
Another remake was “In the Good Old Summertime” in 1949 with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. This was a musical version.
I didn’t know this!! Love Judy Garland so I’ll have to check it out!!
It’s a lovely film
Yoo I'm literally watching a movie right now! I love Kathleen's apartment and her bookstore🍁🤎🍂🧡
That's amazing!! Such a wonderful film.
So glad I watched this video. I’ve now subscribed. You described the apartment beautifully. So now I am going to rewatch you’ve got mail because it’s been a really really long time since I’ve seen it. Can’t wait to see your videos.
Wow thank you so much!! I’m so glad you enjoyed!!
Couldn't have said it better myself! Thank you for watching!! I'm glad you enjoyed!!!
This was so fun to watch. YGM is my very favorite movie and I have watched it countless times. It’s my go-to when I really need to relax and comfort myself. And I love the sets so thank you for taking us through them so carefully. Well done!
Best comfort movie! Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!
This is one of my absolute favorite movies! I’ve always loved the cozy design of everything Kathleen touches, especially in comparison to the other spaces shown in the movie. ❤ so glad the algorithm brought me your channel! This was such a lovely, relaxing video.
You're very kind! Thank you so much for watching!!
I was gifted this movie on VHS. I used to watch it at least one a week because I had no cable. It’s one of my favorites ❤ and both of these spaces you have mentioned I was always observing and obsessing over! Love it!
Thank you so much!! I love this!
This is my all time favorite movie to watch in the fall and winter holidays or just when I’m in that cozy mood craving the holidays in the summer it’s just so nostalgic. This just makes you want to live in the apartment and visit the little shop around the corner. I fell in love with NY the first time I visited and have been there twice in the fall and winter, there is always so much to see, Ty for sharing this.🫶🍁🍂🎃🦃🎄📖📚🛒
Completely agree! Thank you so much for watching!! I'm glad you enjoyed!!!
Wow Thomas You've Got Mail is one of my most favorite movies , Just found your channel thank you for the great look at what Kathleen's New yotk brown store really looks like The New York brown Stones and those San Francisco Painted Ladies homes always fascinated me .
One of the best films! Thank you so much for watching!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Love the movie and obsessed with her apartment.
Agreed!! Thank you for watching!!
I watched that movie over and over. I wrote down every outfit Meg wore and then bought similar. I took notes on the decor and then did similar in parts of my house. I still cry at the ending of that movie. Silly now but didn’t seem like it at the time…..and a friend of mine did the same. 😂
This is so wonderful! Thank you for sharing! (Don't worry, we all cry at the end 😂)
Thank you for taking us through these beautiful spaces! i love this film. her character, and especially the apartment and shop were so cozy, effortless and chic.🙏🏻
Thank you for watching!! I'm glad you enjoyed!!!
@@tomasrosalessWell said!
Wow, quite a history indeed! Thank you so much for sharing! Thanks for watching!!
I'm only 1 minute in and I've already liked this and subscribed. :)
Wow, thank you so much!!
I've watched this .movie SO MANY times, and o oh JUST priced that the layout of the bedroom changes. At the beginning, the bed is angles I to the corner by the bathroom A,few scenes later it's straight on in theroom!!

Absolutely delightful, thank you Tomas xxx

I loved that apartment and the one in Green Card.
Gotten this one recommended so many times! I have to watch it!!!
90s precursor to country cottage , shabby chic !!! Anyone at that time with romantic aesthetic embraced the shabby chic look so let’s give Laura ashwell credit . I collect her deco books .
Completely!!! Such a classic yet timeless look!
all time fave meg ryan and tom hanks movie
Their best!!
Absolutely agree. It's my favourite place to live & work, specially this season 🍁🍂🌻🤗😃
NYC is truly magical during the fall!
In addition to The Shop Around the Corner (1940), there was also In the Good Ole Summertime (1949)
Yess! I still have yet to check that one out!
I have no idea how I got here at 1 in the morning but I'm not mad 😂❤ never seen this movie but this video is making me want to watch it
Hahaha totally recommend! It’s such a wonderful film!
This background music reminds me of both the 90's family movie and the sims music. Great video
Haha that’s awesome! Thank you for watching!!
I loved this video and that movie. One of my favs from the seventies was Marsha Masons apartment in the Goodbye Girl. I wanted to live there
Thank you so much! I haven't seen Goodbye Girl yet, I'll have to give it a go!
@@tomasrosaless!its a rom com based in NYC, around a sublet apartment. Richard Dreyfus is the leading man and won an academy award for this film. The theme song won something too. 1978. I almost cry when i hear the song, i have such good memories of watching the film over and over.
This is so interesting!! I love this movie. It’s wonderful to learn about the beautiful apartment featured in it! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed!
