A good grade starts on set! Take the time to get your lighting and camera settings right when filming, it'll make coloring a lot easier.

1.) Use a color picker on set along with zebras and false colors as lighting cannot be drastically changed in post . 2.)Make sure your screen(s) is/are calibrated or have more than one so that you can balance between the two if you can afford a second monitor. What looks good on your screen may not translate every where else. 3.) Make sure your colors on set (ie. model or actor clothing , light color temperature etc.) fit your mood or color scheme as this will make it difficult in the grade process to fix in post . 4. Color grade from a mood still taken from a bigger budget project , this will allow you to start with an idea on hand and check back and forth when grading.

Hey, just wanted to add. If you use secondaries, accuracy with your selection is very important. A way to simplify the selection process is to adjust the sliders to more accurately represent the range you are adjusting, and to blur/feather the selection. that is all

I follow a number of people on youtube and instagram and a few of em have squarespace tags but I chose to use yours because I appreciate the value and thoughtfulness you bring in all your videos and the fact that of all the youtubers I follow, you're the only one whose free LUT giveaways I've ever been able to grab. I have em as a just in case even though I don't use em. I've been deep in some photography instead of video as of late. Anyways, this is my way of indirectly paying you for your content man. These are solid tips! One other thing that I'd add is to keep it simple. It's easy for new colorists to assume that complex grades are the only route to a good image, so that becomes the norm. In reality, keeping grades simple nearly always produces better results as it forces you to think critically about where an image needs to go, rather than mindlessly tweak (and stress) an image until it kinda works.

Some tips I found were really helpful for me, of course it's always situational... but first and foremost I boost saturation, contrast, darken my blacks, and then adjust exposure accordingly- those are always my first steps, then changing temp if need be, I then create a 2nd adjustment layer with my creative lut and changing the intensity of that.

Great video: If I could add one more-during the Color Correcting stage, avoid crunching the blacks too much and losing detail in the darker range, also making sure the whites aren’t blown out-The Wave Form Monitor in Premier’s Lumetri Scopes is an excellent tool for detecting whether the image is properly exposed. There are some great tutorials on TH-cam on how to use the Lumetri scopes.

One thing that is usually left out is that you properly calibrate your monitors. There are so many people who just leave their monitors as-is out of the box, or actually tweak the monitor to make the video their watching look good. They really don’t get the concept of why a properly calibrated monitor is important. Even if they just learn how to calibrate a monitor to SMPTE colorbars, it makes a huge difference.
That being said knowing how to use scopes properly should help offset a poorly calibrated monitor.
