  • First off...USE SAFETY GLASSES!! Secondly, PLEASE hit the subscribe button!! For this video, I used a red spray straw off a can of carburetor cleaner, WD40, lubricant, etc. I took 2 drill bits, 1.5mm then 2mm to drill out the tube in the can so the red straw would fit tight. Be sure to DRILL BY HAND, do NOT use a drill to drill the can tube out!!! I put the red straw in a drill and locked down the chuck (like you would lock down a small drill bit in your drill...just want you to understand what I meant). Using small pieces of different grit sandpaper, (one grit may be fine but I used 3 starting with courses grit first). spin the red straw with a drill and with your other hand, wrap sandpaper around the end of red straw to sand it down a little....basically making the outside diameter of red straw smaller so it will fit in the tube inside the can (the tube that broke off and can't be pulled out). I cut the straw aprx 3/4", may need to cut it a lil shorter next time and I pushed it down inside the tube of paint can, VERY slowly I pushed it down in it. If you sand off too much which I have not had that happen yet, just use another piece of same straw. Also, u can try without sanding....I had someone say it didn't need sanding but I wasn't gonna push that hard and spray paint on myself. I then put a small amount of super glue on the red straw sticking out of can then pushed the spray nozzle (the one I said I had off a can off empty black spray paint) down on the red straw. I let it dry then tried it out and it worked!!! I hope you liked the video and hit the like button and subscribe as well....I plan on doing a lot more and BETTER videos since I have received sooo many "Thank You comments" Have a good one! the Menace

    I turned around to grab the can for the second coat, knocked it off the table and snapped the cap right off... After a few choice words for rustolem my first thought was I knowTH-cam has a fix. Here we go again! Thanks for the video.

      Just got a can of carb cleaner ,and used about 1 squirt out of it.
      It was sitting on the floor and I had to step over it,not lifting high enough and busting the tip out.
      I knew I'd find a fix here.

It seems this has helped so many and back when I had this issue, I couldn't find much at all online about this. Now, they have videos of actual packs of replacement nozzles but unsure if they work for where the tube breaks off nearly flush with can...lol. Let me know if it worked.

    I went to use the drill bit and the can sprayed directly in my eye, I went to wipe my face in a rush with paint thinner then I ended up burning my eyes and face with it, please make sure to use safety glasses if you are to proceed with this trick.

    • @joelfahey4352

      Also don’t rub you’re face with paint thinner

    • @dgmenace73
      @dgmenace73  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, wear safety glasses anytime you are dealing with anything pressurized. That's one reason I made the little comment about not getting paint on me yet (I knew there was a chance of getting paint sprayed on me especially since that was the first time I tried it). I also twisted drill bit by hand to help prevent accidentally spraying. If you do get paint on you , especially in eyes....flush with water , no chemicals . Paint thinner is very irritant to the skin and most definitely your eyes. I had on safety glasses but it wasn't seen in video. I have did this little trick at least 10x since the video helping out people I know with cans of paints and other sprays.....so far, no accidental sprays. I'm glad you are ok and know to use safety glasses and now know not to use thinner on your skin. Kerosene works well on hands but wouldn't use anywhere else and would wash with soap and water afterwards, then apply hand lotion.

I have been a mechanical/electrical/pneumatic technician for 23yrs and was just told I could no longer work the "typical" job and went through the disability process. My first appearance with a Judge I was awarded disability. This is because a motorcycle accident caused me a lot of health issues that caused attendance issues at my job. Great video for common problem. You saved many a lot of time, money and hassle, and, them cans don’t end up in the dump all full.
    To keep from potentially spraying one’s face, besides goggles, wrap a little tape to seal straw; it will at least slow down any accidental spraying. If you use strong tape you might pull the straw out when removing the tape. Or maybe just snip off a little of the taped end when all done with the fix.

    You have more patience than I do... I just take the can outside to a field on my property, along with an air rifle, and make a reactive target out of it... gets rid of the paint... the paint goes on the weeds that get mowed, and no paint pollution by just tossing the can in the garbage... I also shoot empty cans to relieve the pressure before tossing the can out or recycling it.
    Helps to have the proper place for airgun shooting !

      I do that too....if paint is just no good, especially if pressure has leaked out. I just recently made some anti ricocheting "plinkers" . I used rebar to make quick assemble and quick disassemble stands, big nuts welded to heavy chain, then welded to 1/4" to 3/4" steel plates I cut in different shapes, sizes, and thicknesses to get different plink sounds. Up to a 308, it stops the bullets dead, I can find them under to a couple feet away from targets, no dents. I use field marking paint like for football fields, paint the steel with a very heavy duty paint then later on just spray a thin coat of white marker paint, you can see where each bullet hits. I may make a video on it

I have done a few more since this video and they all worked. One there was NO tube at all sticking out of can and it worked as well. This is just something to prevent from having to throw away good (some very expensive) paint and have to buy more when you can do this and use the paint instead of having to buy more. Most of the $2-$6 paints you can replace the sprayer because the spray tip has the tube on them? Idk why but the more expensive paints have the tube in the can, not the nozzle? I hope it works for you. Did several more since the video without super glue. The drilling of the can tube was very easy as well....just twisted the bit by hand. Good luck!

    I just removed another comment about just buying another can instead of going through this...smh. I think this took 10min to do and where I live this can of paint was like $12.95 and I live 25min from where I purchased. This works for $50 cans of automotive clear coat, paints, etc. If you got the money & time to go buy another can instead of taking a few minutes of time to do this, then by all means...sure, go buy another can of whatever broke on ya. I know I have certain kinds of paint or chemicals that are a couple years old but still good. This has worked on those too. • @dgmenace73
      @dgmenace73  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have did this a bunch of times....all the carburetor cleaners or brake cleaners' red spray/aim straws that I have tried have fit the red and white colored nozzles off the brake/carb cleaners and as many paints fit the bottom of the "replacement" nozzle (the red one in my video that I mentioned it came off a cheap can of black spray paint ...u can see a little black paint on nozzle right b4 I aim into box) they have all fit the end I DID NOT sand down......the reason I used bits to twist with my fingers to hollow out tube inside can AND used the sand paper to make red straw thinner is so that I would not have to make Only the tube in the can larger which would makes its walls even thinner and the same with red spray straw, I didn't want the end going inside broken can tube so thin that it would break easily. Does that make sense? If not I can explain it better. Oh, and yes....I have about 10 or 12 from vehicles I have owned, where I worked on other people's cars/boats., etc......I just found one on old OMC outdrives, an old early 80s Suzuki , then several for Spitfires....think I may sell them, will never use them plus sooo much is available online its unreal, but I do like having my own book...lol. Is it just me but are the books leaving out a lot and or just barely touching on issues/instructions nowadays? Thanks for watching, I hope it helps. Oh, go to a Dollar Store....look for their cheap, $1.50/can paints to use the nozzles off them. They also sell starter fluid which I can't remember is cheaper than carb cleaner or not but I saw the cheap priced paint and opened in store, I carefully pulled nozzle off the paint and had starter fluid can as well, I checked the fit and the white nozzle off paint fit the red straw tight.....thinking you could make a couple spares to keep near your paints?

    Im legit mad that rusto switched to female caps. Ive used a TON of paint and never broke a stem off but today i had to paint 40 feet of baseboard that needed to be replaced from water damage and I bought a big can (15+ozs) for like $11. And it fell off the back of the truck while i was unloading, broke the can lid and the stem broke off inside the cap.
    Unfortunately this trick only made it sput and sputter and was very low pressure. Also, even though my wd40 straw was short, it kept breaking off too. Then i tried drilling the hole big enough to accept a male cap that was sanded down a bit. That didnt work either. It still spits and sputters.

    Please elaborate on what the sandpaper is used for?

    • @dgmenace73
      @dgmenace73  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only used the sand paper to prevent having to drill into the tube inside the can more. I have found that all those red straws are not all the same size. Some don't have to be ground down much if any. I use whatever grit I have handy, its not like sanding furniture or body work where it has to be nearly flawless. I usually grab a course sandpaper, lock the red straw in a drill as if it was a drill bit, wrap the paper around the straw and spin until I can fill a definitely difference in its thickness, then go with a fine grit to smooth it out. Hopefully this makes sense. It doesn't take much to get a red straw to fit in one of those tubes......I just didn't want the main "working" tube in the can to be too thin nor the red straw to be too thin so I drilled the white tube by hand to make the inner diameter of white tube larger and then sanded the outer diameter of the red straw to be smaller to slide into the white tube. Thanks and hopefully it works for as it has the others.
