Riddle of Earth stacks + Mantra + Bloodbath + Second Wind is typically enough time for a healer or RDM to rez a tank. Monk tanking will be even more fun when Variant Dungeons come out! \o/

Tanked as PLD in ShB, can confirm. Final boss of Heroes' Gauntlet in particular; I used to joke that 'it's not a proper run of this dungeon if nobody dies to the final boss'. Clemency definitely helped clutch some runs that would've otherwise ended in wipes.

I have never once heard anyone call a tank a Red tank or a Green tank, are they just making up things? I've heard people call healers Green DPS but thats it.
The best application for the phrase "Red Tank" and "Green Tank" come from challenge runs like All Tank UCoB or EXs. GNB pumps damage in synced content so is labeled Red Tank, and Paladin is the only one that can heal 5 different targets within 15 seconds, which means they are the Green Tank. Other than those very specific use cases, I haven't heard the phrase either.
I've heard warrior called a green tank a lot, the balance discord also has an emote that's the warrior icon but it's green called "Healerbtw" They also use it in their setups for warrior, i got confused for a second a little bit ago cause i thought i was in the healer section till i realized it was the warrior icon
as a GNB main, I stopped at "red tank" IT'S "BLUE DPS" FOR TWELVE SAKE!! this is not how ffxiv nicknames work!!! other than that and some skill name/formatting mistakes (as in- making 2 bullet points to cover 1 actual point) I didn't play enough with the other tanks to really form an opinion here

as a DRK main I can't even deny this XD The only time it's not like that for me are level 70 dungeons, ShB dungeons and EW endgame dungeons. The rest of the time I feel like TBN is made of toilet paper.

It's not really paper though if people use Living Dead properly, as it's basically a Benediction every other pull. Sadly, healers just panic and start spamming heals and don't let the dark knight use their invuln... and most dark knights don't even understand how half of their defensive utilities are meant to be used. It's a little laughable how poorly the playerbase seems to understand dark knight. It's not weaker than any of the other tanks if played properly, but the average player only seems to know Warrior ungabunga so it is what it is.
I was running the Dead Ends as a WHM, and throughout I was just thinking, "how is the DRK losing HP so fast, and so much" and when I checked, their gear was even better than mine. I don't think they were even a bad tank, it was just crazy with how much healing I was pumping into them.
Last time I played DRK in dungeon they hadn't reworked living dead yet but I clearly remember having a much harder time managing trash pulls than with other tank classes. I don't know how to expain it, I press the mit buttons the same way than with other classes and yet I would just DIE twice as quickly, it was stressful. But that was before the living dead rework when pressing living dead was like a gamble of sorts lol. Maybe it feels much better to play in dungeon now.
That tank soloing thru dungeons wighout healer is true, and i found that out particularly about paladins and gunbreakers after i died (as healer) at thestart of that serpent boss falling off the ledge.
When Endwalker came out and me and a couple friends reached endgame we would usually do expert roulette with a warrior and 3 dps just to go through them slightly quicker
Warrior damage is low? Well that's news to me, I solo clear trials with WAR faster than with any other tanks with the exact same gear, and regularly top aggro in raids without even using tomahawk
No explanation as to why HG isn't the best invuln? The only thing I can think of is the cooldown length, but that's only relevant for specific savage/EX strats.
A blasphemous 5 minute cooldown means that in raids where you may want to invuln more than once, PLD is unable to whilst a WAR can. That is enough to make it worse. You may be thinking that Hallowed Ground completely negating damage altogether makes it better, but this, in reality, doesn't matter. When you use your invuln you're going to use it for a tankbuster, which is usually just one massive hit with no followup. No followup means it doesn't matter that your health is low afterwards from using any other invuln, because you just get healed before there is another big hit coming. TLDR: Hallowed Ground has a longer cooldown, which makes it unable to be used twice in one fight, in exchange for some utility that isn't useful. Holmgang is the best invuln.
The main point of using Invuln is you don't want to die when you using it even if it leave you 1 health the damage you receive can easily be recover by healer or even tank themselve no one actually really care they only care if you can Invuln or not which make Holmgang the best Invuln.
I get this article is from like March of 2022, but uh... even the clemency thing is factually wrong. I don't remember a scenario in EW (or Even ShB) where clemency ever cost 1000 mana. It's always cost 2000 outside of leveling. Also it's weirdly inconsistent with regards to mentioning high level stuff but then not also mentioning that (at the time, I don't quite remember when they expanded it) clemency on PLD was functionally obsolete the moment Holy Spirit got a cure potency.
These people cant even count, clemency is about half as weak as equilibrium in potency alone, not to speak of the fact that clemency will ruin your rotation and dps, while equi is literally a no-cost insta ogcd ability.
@@juanjosevidalolmo9208 Thats accounted for by me. 1200 flat potency which is more than what clemency gives and 200 potency over 15s, thats 5 ticks (given that a tick is roughly once per 3s), so 1200 + 5*200 = 2200 potency, absolute massive heal.
Maybe they are thinking of Clemency under Requiescat? Which is something you would only ever use in an extreme emergency, to be fair, but devil's advocate here.
There are two options for me : 1) if you want to keep clemency gcd you have to double its potency if not 2.5k 2) otherwise with 1k clemency should be ogcd with 3 stack and 30 sec each
Technically in terms of being the 'strongest' Invuln, Hallowed Ground's effect is in fact the strongest. It's meaty cooldown however culls it's usefulness.
As far as dungeon content goes and healing a tank it goes WAR, PLD, GNB and then at last DRK. Trying to keep a DRK alive in a dungeon after they pull wall to wall is difficult to say the least. Even when they inevitably pop living once they heal themselves to full with one aoe you have like 6 or 7 seconds before they potentially die. It might not be a popular opinion but I wish TBN would have got the same treatment as sheltron, heart and nascent.
If you couldn't keep a LV90 Drk alive, then you're either bad at healing or Dps bad at their damages or that Drk sucks at Mitigation, TBN mixed with mitigations could keep him up pretty long in a w2w pull, not even talk about it's damages. Yea, you won't be able to keep him full all the time and also don't see 'im heal themself but they can keep themself alive and waiting for heals just fine.
I wish they would just rework shields, period. I hate that the "payoff" (if you can call it that in the case of TBN) is based on having the shield pop - BUT THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF THE SHIELD IS TO PREVENT DAMAGE.
@@anthony26812 Paladin doesn’t have to clemency themselves, the entire magic phase heals them. I can be damn near dead and pop req, and go into the magic phase of my rotation and I will be fully healed before I’m done with the phase. That while I’m taking damage. Don’t have to use clemency, hell Sheltron can be your mitigation while in your melee phase, you don’t have to use your cools downs in mobs unless the dps are sleep.
@@user-gm9ph8pw5w DRK has a lot of really good mit, but you cannot refute that it has a lack of self healing. TBN with mit doesnt last as long as you think. In the instance of a wall to wall pull in a dungeon even if you use TBN and shadow wall, that shield is going to melt in seconds, and all you get is one "free" use of flood in this case. Once it is gone you are taking auto's mitigated by 30%. In a wall to wall pull that is a lot of damage happening. With the other tanks they have heals that can help to effectively mitigate damage on top of the mitigation from cooldowns. The more heals a tank can provide themselves the less the healers have to do and the more they can add to the dps of the enemies. with DRK you cant do that. TBN pops in seconds and has a 15 second CD if I remember correctly which in some cases means you will be dead if your healer isnt expecting all that damage. Living dead is nice with the heal added to it, but like I said once you fully heal yourself in a dungeon, which will be INSTANT, you have at most 6 or 7 seconds on invuln where you are still taking damage. Homgang is the same, but they have nascent and can heal themselves TO FULL for 3 GCDs, meaning if popped right before holmgang ends the healer doesnt have to worry. In the context of a wall to wall pull, the other tanks are just better at living through it with minimal effort from the healers.
PLD invuln is good 1 second after pressing the button(Everybody has those fucking moments where it goes on CD but fucking still dies anyway), then 8 seconds afterwards, then it's really bad for 5 minutes.
I mean they both are wrong, the strongest invul is superbolide, shorter cd and same damage negate as hallow, 1 hp does not matter, in 8 secs GNB can heal itself with out a healer.
Then again, I could claim that LD is the strongest invuln, since it can heal you to full on its own, entirely independent of healers and such. HG could also be the strongest on account of having absolutely no cost and being the longest invul. Holmgang could be said to be the strongest for being relatively easy to use, coming earlier than any other in the WAR learnset and having the shortest CD. And Superbolide could be considered strongest because of what you said. Each of them has "a strength" and "a weakness". It's more a matter of perspective, I think.

I myself cant tank from fear. i somehow can easily heal. but for some reason when it comes to thinking about tanking i am afraid to go into anything with real people. to me its the feeling that if i die as a tank its me. i played wrong. for me as a healer i dont feel that. if someone has stacks and then gets hit again and dies thats not on me. all i can do is get them up and not wipe. and i feel like i do a good job of doing that. even when shit hits the fan we dont wipe, i can hold it together, keep the tanks up and res who needs to be. again what i feel as a tank is i have one job and if i die its on me and i dont like that feeling.
Having fear in FFXIV is something you need to get over, since all the casual content in FFXIV is brain dead easy most of the time, especially if you're a tank. For plenty of bosses in casual content (not all) there's really no reason for you to press any mitigation button, you can literally just sit there and do your combos pointing the boss away from your party, not only that but as a tank messing up a mechanic is much more forgiving than being a healer or DPS since it might not kill you outright. As a tank your job is being hit and that's honestly it, sometimes its your responsibility to help the healer out with mitigation but aside from that your role is the most streamlined content in the game. Unless you're playing savage it literally doesn't matter how shit you "technically" are, just make sure you're getting aggro'd.
Lemme just say this, if you're playing tank and die, that is almost entirely on your healer unless you purposefully walk off the map or do wall to wall pulls in a dungeon and not manage mitigation to a minor degree. Don't be afraid of playing tank, just go for it and you'll get more comfortable.
Talking as a PLD main here, I think hallowed Ground is good…..until u realize u have issues getting it back when u would need it again x) Latest extreme for example u actually need to hard mitigate the 2nd shared buster as PLD since hallowed has to long Cooldown. But it’s fine if they keep buffing us PLD mains we will be strongest Tank soon so we take the longest Cooldown on invuln. Can’t wait for spicy 1200 Confiteor and additional stuff for Blade potency ;P
the shared tb can just the mitted. Sheltron, Rampart and Sentinel all at once is enough to live it (so long as you are full hp and do not have a vuln stack that is, lol)
Yeah currently Confiteor is 1000 potency, I just mentioned that Confiteor can end up being 1200 potency if they keep buffing blade Combo. And yeah hard mitigation on 2nd stack as Pld is doable when healers ain’t dead and the Pld knows what to use. All in all it doesn’t hurt to bad, I’m used to far worse dmg. Just saying Brute justice and Crush chaser Auto atks, was my worst experience so far or the latest example P8S does hurt a lot aswell lol x)
Invuln skils so far I've been playing have been mostly a last resort kind of skill because their cooldown is really long you don't want to waste it on something trivial lol

No it's not. Just for example in EX4, there is a double tank buster that can be invulned both times due to it being exactly 6 minutes apart. What's Hallowed Ground cd again? I forgor Oh wait. 7 minutes. If you have a PLD you actually do need to stack up at least once for that double buster because if it gets put on the PLD both times they're just murdered.
clemency is a good healing skill, at 1000 cure potency it CAN compete with healers, but not beat them, the strength of the this heal is affected by the mind stat, which a paladin, as a TANK, will have very little of since it serves very little to their tanking needs and they would be far better off focusing on mitigation numbers (tenacity) and damage numbers (strength,critical hit, direct hit, ETC).
Regarding defense, all tanks may as well be identical. No reason to pick one over the other... by the time healers have to heal you, you're all getting the same heals no matter what you play. Especially in this tier where you can't just mindlessly invuln every other tank buster without chadding your healers with bleed/poison damage. Damage or your personal preference are the only things thay matter.
Man the tank buster in p5s sucks if you are the one taking toxic crunch plus the boss's autos after. With week one gear it really required focus from the healers and tanks miting correctly to not just outright die.
Run a mob heavy dungeon as dark and then as war. I can run war all day and not need a heal. Cant survive without heals as DRK. Some are better than others in some situations
Pld has the shortest effective invuln with the longest cooldown. That makes it the worst, especially since drk got self heals to recover from walking dead. Best to worst is: - war - drk - gnb - pld Ok now I’m going to watch the video.
While I would agree that Xeno could probably write quite the compelling article himself, unless he then turned around and made a video of him reading said article and critiquing himself like he does here I don't think I'd go out of my way to read it since it's obviously not going to contain any information that I haven't already heard him say many times. A video, though, could be incredibly entertaining like these videos of him critiquing other people's articles and could lead to other people doing the same to his work which would not only add more entertainment to the FFXIV community but also hopefully push out useful information to people who are just being exposed to FFXIV for the first time. No explanation as to why HG isn't the best invuln? The only thing I can think of is the cooldown length, but that's only relevant for specific savage/EX strats.
A blasphemous 5 minute cooldown means that in raids where you may want to invuln more than once, PLD is unable to whilst a WAR can. That is enough to make it worse.
You may be thinking that Hallowed Ground completely negating damage altogether makes it better, but this, in reality, doesn't matter. When you use your invuln you're going to use it for a tankbuster, which is usually just one massive hit with no followup. No followup means it doesn't matter that your health is low afterwards from using any other invuln, because you just get healed before there is another big hit coming.
TLDR: Hallowed Ground has a longer cooldown, which makes it unable to be used twice in one fight, in exchange for some utility that isn't useful. Holmgang is the best invuln.
The main point of using Invuln is you don't want to die when you using it even if it leave you 1 health the damage you receive can easily be recover by healer or even tank themselve no one actually really care they only care if you can Invuln or not which make Holmgang the best Invuln.

I get this article is from like March of 2022, but uh... even the clemency thing is factually wrong. I don't remember a scenario in EW (or Even ShB) where clemency ever cost 1000 mana. It's always cost 2000 outside of leveling. Also it's weirdly inconsistent with regards to mentioning high level stuff but then not also mentioning that (at the time, I don't quite remember when they expanded it) clemency on PLD was functionally obsolete the moment Holy Spirit got a cure potency.
These people cant even count, clemency is about half as weak as equilibrium in potency alone, not to speak of the fact that clemency will ruin your rotation and dps, while equi is literally a no-cost insta ogcd ability.
and give you a healing over time, and a tank alost never wil use clemency with a healer alive xD

@@juanjosevidalolmo9208 Thats accounted for by me. 1200 flat potency which is more than what clemency gives and 200 potency over 15s, thats 5 ticks (given that a tick is roughly once per 3s), so 1200 + 5*200 = 2200 potency, absolute massive heal.
Maybe they are thinking of Clemency under Requiescat? Which is something you would only ever use in an extreme emergency, to be fair, but devil's advocate here.
There are two options for me :
1) if you want to keep clemency gcd you have to double its potency if not 2.5k
2) otherwise with 1k clemency should be ogcd with 3 stack and 30 sec each

Technically in terms of being the 'strongest' Invuln, Hallowed Ground's effect is in fact the strongest. It's meaty cooldown however culls it's usefulness.

Trying to keep a DRK alive in a dungeon after they pull wall to wall is difficult to say the least. Even when they inevitably pop living once they heal themselves to full with one aoe you have like 6 or 7 seconds before they potentially die. It might not be a popular opinion but I wish TBN would have got the same treatment as sheltron, heart and nascent.
If you couldn't keep a LV90 Drk alive, then you're either bad at healing or Dps bad at their damages or that Drk sucks at Mitigation, TBN mixed with mitigations could keep him up pretty long in a w2w pull, not even talk about it's damages. Yea, you won't be able to keep him full all the time and also don't see 'im heal themself but they can keep themself alive and waiting for heals just fine.
I wish they would just rework shields, period. I hate that the "payoff" (if you can call it that in the case of TBN) is based on having the shield pop - BUT THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF THE SHIELD IS TO PREVENT DAMAGE.
gnb should be before pld unless you're actually expecting the pld to clemency himself
@@anthony26812 Paladin doesn’t have to clemency themselves, the entire magic phase heals them. I can be damn near dead and pop req, and go into the magic phase of my rotation and I will be fully healed before I’m done with the phase. That while I’m taking damage. Don’t have to use clemency, hell Sheltron can be your mitigation while in your melee phase, you don’t have to use your cools downs in mobs unless the dps are sleep.
@@user-gm9ph8pw5w DRK has a lot of really good mit, but you cannot refute that it has a lack of self healing. TBN with mit doesnt last as long as you think. In the instance of a wall to wall pull in a dungeon even if you use TBN and shadow wall, that shield is going to melt in seconds, and all you get is one "free" use of flood in this case. Once it is gone you are taking auto's mitigated by 30%. In a wall to wall pull that is a lot of damage happening. With the other tanks they have heals that can help to effectively mitigate damage on top of the mitigation from cooldowns. The more heals a tank can provide themselves the less the healers have to do and the more they can add to the dps of the enemies. with DRK you cant do that. TBN pops in seconds and has a 15 second CD if I remember correctly which in some cases means you will be dead if your healer isnt expecting all that damage. Living dead is nice with the heal added to it, but like I said once you fully heal yourself in a dungeon, which will be INSTANT, you have at most 6 or 7 seconds on invuln where you are still taking damage. Homgang is the same, but they have nascent and can heal themselves TO FULL for 3 GCDs, meaning if popped right before holmgang ends the healer doesnt have to worry. In the context of a wall to wall pull, the other tanks are just better at living through it with minimal effort from the healers.

PLD invuln is good 1 second after pressing the button(Everybody has those fucking moments where it goes on CD but fucking still dies anyway), then 8 seconds afterwards, then it's really bad for 5 minutes.

I mean they both are wrong, the strongest invul is superbolide, shorter cd and same damage negate as hallow, 1 hp does not matter, in 8 secs GNB can heal itself with out a healer.
Then again, I could claim that LD is the strongest invuln, since it can heal you to full on its own, entirely independent of healers and such.
HG could also be the strongest on account of having absolutely no cost and being the longest invul.
Holmgang could be said to be the strongest for being relatively easy to use, coming earlier than any other in the WAR learnset and having the shortest CD.
And Superbolide could be considered strongest because of what you said.
Each of them has "a strength" and "a weakness". It's more a matter of perspective, I think.

I myself cant tank from fear. i somehow can easily heal. but for some reason when it comes to thinking about tanking i am afraid to go into anything with real people. to me its the feeling that if i die as a tank its me. i played wrong. for me as a healer i dont feel that. if someone has stacks and then gets hit again and dies thats not on me. all i can do is get them up and not wipe. and i feel like i do a good job of doing that. even when shit hits the fan we dont wipe, i can hold it together, keep the tanks up and res who needs to be. again what i feel as a tank is i have one job and if i die its on me and i dont like that feeling.
Having fear in FFXIV is something you need to get over, since all the casual content in FFXIV is brain dead easy most of the time, especially if you're a tank. For plenty of bosses in casual content (not all) there's really no reason for you to press any mitigation button, you can literally just sit there and do your combos pointing the boss away from your party, not only that but as a tank messing up a mechanic is much more forgiving than being a healer or DPS since it might not kill you outright. As a tank your job is being hit and that's honestly it, sometimes its your responsibility to help the healer out with mitigation but aside from that your role is the most streamlined content in the game. Unless you're playing savage it literally doesn't matter how shit you "technically" are, just make sure you're getting aggro'd.
Lemme just say this, if you're playing tank and die, that is almost entirely on your healer unless you purposefully walk off the map or do wall to wall pulls in a dungeon and not manage mitigation to a minor degree. Don't be afraid of playing tank, just go for it and you'll get more comfortable.

Talking as a PLD main here, I think hallowed Ground is good…..until u realize u have issues getting it back when u would need it again x)
Latest extreme for example u actually need to hard mitigate the 2nd shared buster as PLD since hallowed has to long Cooldown.
But it’s fine if they keep buffing us PLD mains we will be strongest Tank soon so we take the longest Cooldown on invuln.

the shared tb can just the mitted. Sheltron, Rampart and Sentinel all at once is enough to live it (so long as you are full hp and do not have a vuln stack that is, lol)
Yeah currently Confiteor is 1000 potency, I just mentioned that Confiteor can end up being 1200 potency if they keep buffing blade Combo.
And yeah hard mitigation on 2nd stack as Pld is doable when healers ain’t dead and the Pld knows what to use. All in all it doesn’t hurt to bad, I’m used to far worse dmg. Just saying Brute justice and Crush chaser Auto atks, was my worst experience so far or the latest example P8S does hurt a lot aswell lol x)

Invuln skils so far I've been playing have been mostly a last resort kind of skill because their cooldown is really long you don't want to waste it on something trivial lol
In dungeons -> run through the entire corridor to the end (from start to boss) and invuln while killing all mobs. In raids -> generally used for TBs
You very obviously have no clue how to play tank. What are you gonna do, save it for the next dungeon? Use it instead of holding on to it and letting it go to waste.

No it's not. Just for example in EX4, there is a double tank buster that can be invulned both times due to it being exactly 6 minutes apart. What's Hallowed Ground cd again? I forgor Oh wait. 7 minutes. If you have a PLD you actually do need to stack up at least once for that double buster because if it gets put on the PLD both times they're just murdered.
clemency is a good healing skill, at 1000 cure potency it CAN compete with healers, but not beat them, the strength of the this heal is affected by the mind stat, which a paladin, as a TANK, will have very little of since it serves very little to their tanking needs and they would be far better off focusing on mitigation numbers (tenacity) and damage numbers (strength,critical hit, direct hit, ETC).

Regarding defense, all tanks may as well be identical. No reason to pick one over the other... by the time healers have to heal you, you're all getting the same heals no matter what you play. Especially in this tier where you can't just mindlessly invuln every other tank buster without chadding your healers with bleed/poison damage.
Damage or your personal preference are the only things thay matter.

Man the tank buster in p5s sucks if you are the one taking toxic crunch plus the boss's autos after. With week one gear it really required focus from the healers and tanks miting correctly to not just outright die.
How to tell everyone that you dont play tanks without saying that you dont play tanks:
Run a mob heavy dungeon as dark and then as war. I can run war all day and not need a heal. Cant survive without heals as DRK. Some are better than others in some situations
Pld has the shortest effective invuln with the longest cooldown. That makes it the worst, especially since drk got self heals to recover from walking dead. Best to worst is:
- war
- drk
- gnb
- pld

While I would agree that Xeno could probably write quite the compelling article himself, unless he then turned around and made a video of him reading said article and critiquing himself like he does here I don't think I'd go out of my way to read it since it's obviously not going to contain any information that I haven't already heard him say many times. A video, though, could be incredibly entertaining like these videos of him critiquing other people's articles and could lead to other people doing the same to his work which would not only add more entertainment to the FFXIV community but also hopefully push out useful information to people who are just being exposed to FFXIV for the first time. I mean, he could totally make a stream of just him creating and editing the article with the goal in mind that he has to explain things in terms that a non-FFXIV player would somewhat understand while making the jobs sound interesting enough to pick up the game and then his editor could easily turn THAT into the TH-cam video.
