    First off all, pardon my grammar, but I love watching your videos. It is really helpful.
    Second, I want to address an issue that I have to join a server to a Domain Controller, don't you need to change the IP address of the server to point to the Domain Controller, I also had to disable the firewall to join the domain. I'm not sure if you need to do this, but in your video you didn't talk about disabling the firewall. Also, there is no internet, how can you configured the internet access?

    You buy server grade boards, ECC (error correction) memory (minimum of 16 GB), 2 Intel Xeon processor 3 to 5 HDDs (1 or 2 TBs each). If you want to build it virtually remember you are limited to the box VMWare Player is on. That means whatever CPU, memory, mobo, HDs (or SDDs) in the virtual environment. Though going virtual is becoming the norm, I still prefer physical hardware on physical machines. BTW Exchange is a PITA to work with, and if you screw up the install it is a PITA to remove.

    You don't have to create the computer in AD before joining it to the domain do you? If the account isn't there and you join the domain with valid credentials, it should just create the item automatically, shouldn't it?

  • @davidhermans5115
    @davidhermans5115 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Is there any particular reason/benefit to creating the computer account in the active directory before adding the actual computer/server to the domain?
    In my experience, if the computer name is set correctly on the PC/server you're going to add,
    the process of adding it will create the computer account automatically.

    • @MarkWarbington
      @MarkWarbington 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no reason to add the new server to AD manually. I'm not sure why he demonstrated it that way. It's an extra, unnecessary step.
      That said, I'm really enjoying these videos. Thanks Eli!

    • @turtleban
      @turtleban 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Mark Warbington Not necessarily true. In real world scenarios you can create a pre-staged computer account in AD and move it to the correct OU for proper management before the actual computer joins. Once you connect your actual server to the domain, AD will recognize the server and attach it to the pre-staged account that is already located in the proper OU. If a computer is not pre-staged before adding to the domain, the new computer object will be in the default folder and you will have to manually locate it and set its management scope, greatly reducing the efficiency of the process. Imagine in Eli's case where he had to add 200+ servers for his client, do you really want to manually drag and drop 200 computer accounts to their perspective OU after installation? While for the purpose of this video it doesn't really do much, Eli is just promoting good practice in general as an experienced IT guy should.

    • @Baby_Bear769
      @Baby_Bear769 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +turtleban This 100%. In a somewhat large environment that I work at we have hundreds of regional offices all over the state and when the local Admin adds a computer without creating the object in AD first, it gets sent to a default folder which only our head Server Admin has and it creates work that is unneeded. Just as a personal example from a newbie to back up your statement :)

    You probably have covered this under a previous video, but I have been watching and haven really seen an answer. When you added this server to the domain, how did it know the IP address of your domain controller? Did you have dynamic DHCP enabled, or is there an A record on the DHCP server for the ETCG domain name?
    I have really enjoyed your videos and have learned a great deal from them. Keep up the fantastic work!

    Hello Eli, thank you very much for this tutorial.
    I tell you, I am a computer engineering student and I am studying to develop my final project. Broadly speaking this has to add a web server to an active directory network to control each computer in the network and send them commands, in turn they will send information back, something like communication by sockets.
    This are my questions:
    1) If I want to add a web server to the active directory network, does this necessarily have to be IIS? (Would this be the best option?)
    In case the first answer is a yes.
    2) Within IIS, can I program in node JS the logic of the application that will control each client computer of the active directory network? Or should I necessarily learn ASP.NET, C #, MSSQL, etc.?
    Thank you so much for everything.

  • @gtmerrill
    @gtmerrill 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    So in windows 2012 server do you have to add the computer to active directory first before joining the domain, in 2008 and 2003 you just joined the server to the domain and it added the server to active directory for you.

      Have you put the computer with Virtualbox into another subnetwork?
      For example - your default subnetwork, that connected to the ISP router is 192.168.0.0, then you should put the PC into an another subnetwork, for example: 192.168.1.0.
      Have you split the network with an another router?

    • @blessedpetal

    Eli the Computer Guy - I am trying to join a child domain controller located on a network located in India to a forest with top level domain (root) located in Australia / Sydney (Here). Is it possible to do that or does the CHILD Domain controller have to be on the same DOMAIN as the forest it's trying to connect to?
    I have heard that Site A is capable to connect to Site B (both sites are located on separate networks) I understand basics of forest, domains and child domains...

    Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.
    The domain name "SPORTSHD" might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
    If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
    The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "SPORTSHD":
    The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
    The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.SPORTSHD
    Common causes of this error include the following:
    - The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
