I bought a Silver 2003 STS with about 60,000 miles on it, in college back in 2009. Hands down, one of my favorite cars I've ever owned! The very tail end of the "old Cadillac" era.
I've have owned several different Northstar V8 Cadilac's and none of them had any engine issues. Just normal maintenance and proper care is all that was needed. I grew up with a 95 Seville and I still love this car.
Good review. Leased a '94 STS, then bought a '97 & put over 210K of trouble miles on it. When I first got it, drove on the 402 between Sarnia & London Ontario. Ran it up to 140 mph (that's what the speedo said) with room to go. Even at that speed it felt extremely solid & planted to the pavement. Very impressive road car that was a blast to drive & quite a sleeper. The NorthStar was a beast. It blew the doors off Mustang 5.0s & other supposedly performance cars. Only problem, the '97 went through a quart of oil about every 1500 miles & killed a battery every 3 years like clockwork.
They did totally nail it here. IMHO, they also nailed it in 2014 with the XTSVSport (which I own). These cars are luxurious, have presence, and are so powerful.
Bill the Northstar wasn't installed in the STS/SLS until 1994! The STS got the L37 with higher power coming in at the higher rev range, while the SLS got the slightly lazier revving LD8, just different tuning / cam profiles. Enjoyed your video as always!
I had a 1993 Cadillac Seville STS with a Northstar engine. I remember that engine because it leaked coolant and steamed out the exhaust even on a warm day. I tried to replace the engine but that did not go well.
@@robsanchez5742 You're right!!! STS got it one model year before SLS. Sorry about your car. I had a 98 (second gen of that car) and had to replace a cylinder head (240,000 miles and one lifter wore through until the tops of the valve keepers disappeared!) and all 32 valve stem seals to stop the blue smoke. Surprisingly the head gasket held up but it overheated until I cleared the cooling system of the excess stop leak that was blocking flow (it needed a water pump, previous owner didn't want to work on the cam-driven water pump and used a lot of stop leak).
Much thanks Bill! Superb timing; this piece will be so soothing to enjoy on the drive home from dinner tonite. 43 minutes to enjoy and decompress. Happy Thanksgiving to Bill and all his lovely & proper fans!

GM really hit the styling perfect, one of the best looking sedans ever. In my preferred alternate history, Cadillac made this rear-wheel drive and put the Corvette LT-1 in them instead of the fatally flawed, FWD NorthStar.

Kudos to Bill, the first Utube presenter to mention the quirk by which early Northstar cars could be safely operated without coolant. I remember Road & Track driving a DeVille from Needles to Barstow with the radiator drain plug in the driver’s pocket. I find it ironic that a reputation for chronic overheating has so thoroughly affected the resale value of any Northstar car. Not that I dispute the high occurrence rate of failed head gaskets and pulled head bolt threads, but I think it has more to do with GM’s corporate adoption of DexCool a.long with extended intervals for coolant replacement than any design flaw in the engine. Also note that the car you feature has 300 horsepower because it’s an STS. AN SLS bought on the same day would have 270 horses and more luxury tuned suspension and tires. Speaking of tires the STS came on Goodyear Eagles with sufficient speed rating and no hokey white sidewalls. But YAY BILL for remembering the “can’t be overheated” claim, it was a unique feature and was used as a selling point.
I had a ‘99 STS. Absolutely loved it. It was the most comfortable car I’ve ever owned. But then it overheated. And it overheated again. Faulty head bolts. That was the end of my Northstar adventure.
These were great cars in their day. My parents' family cars in my teens in the '90's were a '92 4.9L SLS, followed by a '93 Northstar STS. The biggest headache we had was the '93's traction control that didn't have an off switch and wouldn't let you get the needed wheelspin to get unstuck in snow (so my dad pulled the TC/ABS fuse.) I know, Northstar head bolts, but we had a '98 STS too & my granddad has had a few Northstar DeVilles and we never had that problem.
Yes, these were indeed great cars even to this day. I grew up with a 95 Seville SLS and have had several others afterwards. They all have been great and zero engine issues. Actually, there is a way to override the traction control system on the 93-95 Seville's through the onboard information center. The sequence is in the factory service manual. Later in 1996 is when they decided to make a console mounted on/off switch for easier operation.
This brings back memories. I remember what a shock it was to see the first pictures of the '92 Seville in Car and Driver, it was truly something to dream of. I don't think I ever drove a Seville, but I did lay hands on a Eldorado Touring Coupe of similar vintage. The test drive looked a lot like your multiple runs through the powerband of this car. That car did have full maintenance paperwork included, and at the time I would have been supporting someone's classic Cadillac habit (there was a '61 Coupe de Ville there at the time). Back then, I could drive anything I could make the math work out on, and that was the problem. I couldn't figure out how to afford this. It's too bad, as it was a definite riot to drive.. Incidentally, when I saw this video and that it was 43 minutes, I thought, "Well, he's definitely back to form now!".
Hey Billy-Boy, absolutely spectacular burn out drill on Peter's driveway bolting toward the wrought iron gates. Always entertaining and definitely worth the price of admission. Many Thanks Yo ! 🚘 👏 - 💯
This car was also quite popular (for a US car that is) over here in Europe, the sedan as well as the Eldorado coupé version. Would love to own one too :).
Nice review and when you're not complaining about the weather were freezing up here in the Midwest and elsewhere. Also, I miss my ole 1976 Coupe Deville blue with wire wheels probably still chugging along. I am trying to fit into the new evo scene with my 64 Buick and 66 Pontiac that produce more plant food and cool the planet according to NASA.
I absolutely loved these cars when they were new and still love them today. Definitely styled unlike any other Cadillac of the time and is still timeless in my opinion. Unfortunately the Northstar proved to not be the greatest.
That's totally true. There were a huge hit and put Cadillac on the game after the 80's disaster. It was fantastic inside and out and I love it....but fade away with the three letter name craze of the early 2000's. A very atractive ATS came by the end of 2010's, but too late... As a Caddy fan since my childhood (I saw a '73 Coupe de Ville in '86 in a body shop and that was the beginning of my huge preference for the full size American cars) Its so sad that can't cope with the actual luxury car market dominated by the imports.....Thanks Bill for your always fantastic and unique videos...specially the anecdotes and the night drives, due that I'm a HUGE fan of instrument cluster lighting. Thanks and keep it going!!! 😎💪👍.
Yes Bill and thank you!!I bought one of these with the little-know options of 396 Hemi Boss transmission, harley 5-barrel carb, ram air valve covers, and Isky header valves.I also ordered a mack rear-end with 12to1 gears.I was the terror of Boise back in the 60s with it and could lift all four tires off the ground when I powerbraked!!good memories!!
I had a 1993 Cadillac Seville STS that I got at an auction. Great deal until I realized the Northstar engine was steaming out the rear tail pipe and loosing coolant. There was NO coolant in the oil, however.. Seems to have been a problem with this engine in this timeframe. Also water condensation in rear lights was an issue. I must say it was one of the few cars that firmly pushed me into my seat on acceleration.
The car I always wanted... And still do. The only problem is the Gen 1 Northstar with the head bolt stretching issues. Timeserts and improved bolts will solve the issue, but we're talking a $5k repair job or more to prevent the issue. Sadly, GM didn't fully fix the Northstar design until 2003. The motor was a stinker, but the rest of the car was world class. And the styling still looks great three decades later.
The 1990's was my favorite decade for the luxury car, & the 4th-generation Cadillac Seville, ESPECIALLY the STS, is a perfect example of why. The latest in performance & technology, coupled with the classic elegance, luxury, & style that buyers had come to demand.
Hi Bill, great video. I had 3 original Seville's, a '76, a '77 and a ''78. Wonderful cars. Then I bought a Bustle Back; very comfortable but not a good car in my opinion. Never had a post '92. They're pretty rare in the UK but you never know. Keep 'em coming bbb...
I bought a 99 STS, Beautiful car, Smooth ride, Comfortable, Nothing came close to this car.... than, I decided to drive it to Tijuana-- damn near destroyed my suspension😂 ... but it eventually suffered the same fate as most NorthStar engines.. Head gaskets blown..
I think De Niro drove one in the movie “Heat”. A great looking car (as is the Eldorado from that era). That Northstar sounds awesome but as you intimated it doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability.
You know what would have been the funniest thing in the world? If at 33:52 when you turned the radio up if the song Macarena would have been playing! haha.
I remember an episode of the old show “Nowhere Man” where Dean Stockwell shows off his new Cadillac and exclaims “It’s got the freaking Northstar system!”
I had a '99 Eldorado ETC that I loved and have owned 3 Northstar cars to date. The STS and ETC was limited to 130mph unless you ordered the Z rated tire package. If you can find one of those, they were unrestricted and would run 155 all day with the MBs and BMWs. Also a fun party trick, manually select second gear from a stop and then roll into the throttle and floor it. That tells the computer to increase the line pressure on the transmission and it will bark the tires taking 2nd gear lol. I have at least 1 video of it on here on my channel.
My dad had a ‘93 Seville SLS. Nice car. The center console and some of the trim bits were different than this car tho. He ended up trading it for an ‘06 DTS cuz he really was a fan of the vertical tail light, land yacht concept 😂. I love your vids. You getting your ass kicked by the driver side door lock made me chuckle. Happy turkey day!
I had an 06 DTS performance luxury 3 with every option and in crystal red pearl. Had the heated, cooled and massaging seats, shale Tuscan leather bucket seats with the same center console as the Buick Lucerne from the factory lol, digital auto climate control for the rear seat on the back of the center console, power rear sunshade and real wood all over. Also being a performance model also it had the ungoverned 6500 rpm redline NHP N*, paint matching grille and 18 in. chrome rims. It was really nice and it was very easy to fall asleep in without trying lol. I did many times being to comfortable to get out and o had many friends fall asleep even with me running her 150 mph lol. Such a beauty. Now I have an 04 Dale Jr supercharged L67 3800 Monte Carlo SS

Hey Billy-Boy, absolutely spectacular burn out drill on Peter's driveway bolting toward the wrought iron gates. Always entertaining and definitely worth the price of admission. Many Thanks Yo ! 🚘 👏 - 💯
"Up front, you have a monochromatic egg-chrome grill...LOL!😂 I love how you roll with the little things!
3:03 is that Paulie Gualtieri running down Christopher lol.
Awesome to hear you speak so highly of these cars! I had 1994 and currently own a 1992 with 46k on it.
Classic Bill commentary. Have not heard on his channel for some time. Excellent stuff.
Those mid to late '90s Cadillacs had the best interiors. Just enough tech...it's too much today.
Bill, look at an old AVION. They were like the airstream, but better. After Katrina, I lived in one for about 10 years and loved it.
This car was also quite popular (for a US car that is) over here in Europe, the sedan as well as the Eldorado coupé version. Would love to own one too :).
Great job! Always excited to see a new vid.
Always hope to see a 1st gen scirocco. It was my first car and a great car. Keep em coming!
Probably the last Cadillac that couldn't be easily mistaken for a Chevy.
I beg to differ; my 1996 Sedan De Ville never would get mistaken for a Chevy!!
Happy Thanksgiving Bill thank you for the upload
One of Bill's best.
Considering I'm from Australia I'm loving that he is leading his profanity out of the box.
Outstanding work Young bill
I think the coronavirus whiskey helped. Hope he continues taking his “medicine” before all his future videos. 😂
Love your commentary and recap of events from the year in question ❤
When these came out, I was just a kid. I absolutely thought these were awesome!
You always got TH-cam as a backup plan😊
Bill NEVER stop reviewing cars. It’s truly one of a kind.
Fantastic vid Bill! Happy thanksgiving!
"I ended up trading it for a microphone"...haha, FANTASTIC reference!!
Had a black 2000 sts when I was 25. Got it for under 5k. Popper it's gaskets right at 100k miles. Still worth it. Thing was a great highway burner.
Bill- please make your videos as loooong and rambling as possible!! That’s what we love!
Best thanksgiving ever thank you for the love of god Bill!!!!
I had a 1995.. I miss that car...Exact same color pearl white with the mayonnaise and mustard! Beautiful car!
Fantastic review Bill, welcome back
I absolutely loved these cars when they were new and still love them today.
Best Rant yet Bill! Love it 👏
hello from Australia Bill, always enjoy your videos and insights into the world, the world according to Bill, thank you Sir
Good evening Bill from Ron in a freezing cold Manchester, once again another superb and informative video
I love X I’ll be starting a podcast on it soon. Facebook is lame too much censorship. Great review and Happy Thanksgiving 🇺🇸🦃🍽
I never realized what a beautiful car it is.
At the end of this model's run, it looked pretty good.
I had a 1993 Cadillac Seville STS that I got at an auction. Great deal until I realized the Northstar engine was steaming out the rear tail pipe and loosing coolant. There was NO coolant in the oil,
however.. Seems to have been a problem with this engine in this timeframe. Also water condensation in rear lights was an issue. I must say it was one of the few cars that firmly pushed me into my seat on acceleration.
Love your videos Bill, been a fan for a long time, from Ireland and always loved American cars myself
Love the Sevilles!!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Bill!!!!
Bill, you’ve spoiled us lately! Please keep doing it. I hope you’ve had a happy thanksgiving. Be well.
One of the best looking and functional instrument panels / dashboards I have sat behind. Much more appealing than today's flat screens.
I had an earlier version and admit I regretted not waiting for the better engine. LOL on your trunk options.
I remember I used to watch it videos yrs ago.. glad I'm back in tune 👍🏽
I love The styling on these cars! One of my friends who is a builder and a pastor on one of these cars used. It was a treat to ride in that car.
I loved this cars rear wheel drive replacement, then called the STS. Didn’t last long.. but kind of lives on in different nomenclature
Still, all these years later, the best reviews on online. I always get a great laugh. We need more of these and less of the snoozefests.
The 1990's was my favorite decade for the luxury car, & the 4th-generation Cadillac Seville, ESPECIALLY the STS, is a perfect example of why. The latest in performance & technology, coupled with the classic elegance, luxury, & style that buyers had come to demand.
My parents had a 1994, which still had the “Seville” badge on the back.…loved it. My favorite is the 80’s notchback though!
The 76 was my favorite but this is a close second! I would love to own this one! Thanks Bill
I think De Niro drove one in the movie “Heat”. A great looking car (as is the Eldorado from that era). That Northstar sounds awesome but as you intimated it doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability.
Nice Job - Love your reviews
Good to see my man,,,,,,hadn't seen a vid in a while
You know what would have been the funniest thing in the world? If at 33:52 when you turned the radio up if the song Macarena would have been playing! haha.
Bill you can't complain about the weather here in Naples this week. It has been awesome!!!!
I remember an episode of the old show “Nowhere Man” where Dean Stockwell shows off his new Cadillac and exclaims “It’s got the freaking Northstar system!”
Thank you for the video Bill.
I woulda laughed my ass off if the macarena was playing on the radio. I dig that Caddy. The Paulie Walnuts edition with them vogues on it. Irregardless.. Happy Thanksgiving Bill.
@@mopargm9329 That's one swell Monte you have. I run a 2002 Pontiac GTP.
@@stephendavidbailey2743 very sweet I've had many over the years. And thanks I love GPS and Impalas also. As a mechanic of 31 years so far of there is a better engine than the 3800 I haven't found it yet. I especially love L67s
These were nice and high tech and very comfortable seats. My Mom bought a new White Diamond 01. She loved it but it had problems. The dash read out display had to be replaced twice and remember the front drive and gasket bolts. She traded every 30,000 miles.
After 5 rears of retail, I will forever hate people.
Merry Christmas Bill!!
Just saw a Home Depot commercial on TV for the HD kids work shop that sounds just like you!! But then I thought, Bill, a commercial for kids..., no 😂
I saw that commercial too and thought the same thing. It sounded like Bill.
