Top review as always. Totally agree that it is very pricy, and too heavy as well, nevertheless what a gorgeous looking car. I've never seen the M8 as an 911 rival. It's far too big and heavy for that. I see it more like an Aston Martin DB11 and Bentley GT rival, but much cheaper than those cars. That said, personally I'd go for the M850i, which is almost as quick (as a daily anyway), more comfy and far cheaper too.

Completely agree. It’s more of a high performance luxury GT car. M850i will blitz any Bentley or Aston so the m8 can be a bit over powered. But for the size and presence this is more of a luxury GT car with the perfect blend of the Bentley GT and the 911

If the tyres are so important as Joe suggests, its a bit of a shame that the supplying dealer wasn't able to offer a set of Michelin's to help establish how much of the reported problems are down to the P Zero's and how much the chasis, etc.

Great review Joe, although I have to say I’m slight saddened as I had been looking at these for quite some time to replace my F82 M4. I always loved the idea of it being a bargain Conti GT and the used prices on these had really been catching my eye. I would never have expected it to compete with the M4 dynamically (although in reality a big V8 and soft suspension would suit most of my real world driving to a tee), but sadly it sounds like it doesn’t perform the GT role well at all. The fact that it was such a mild update, makes me think they are bailing on this generation and we will see an all electric flagship i8 in the not too distant future.

Agree with a lot of what you said, super quick but not that engaging. The Pirelli tyres got me in trouble a couple of times, just awful in the wet. I got £20k off the list price with the dealer contribution and lost about £1100 a month in depreciation. Not sure I agree with the m4c comparison, one-off the selling points for me having come from an m5c was exclusivity. I’ve had 6 BMWs and 7 911s, and my X5M was a pleasure to drive for a SAV. Porsche wouldn’t deal on a Cayenne S so I got the X5M for the same price. But all of my 911s have been flawless. I can’t say the same on my BMWs

Similar here. Had 5 Porsches (1 cayenne, 3. 911’s and a GT4) and two BMW’s. None really ever gave me any problems. Porsche is next level regarding reliability and customer service. Better than BMW for sure but also no real complaints about BMW.
Our 2022 530e that my mom drives is just spectacular car and value. Looking at a used M8 GC to use as a daily to replace my DB9.

Totally agree with review. The 6 and now 8 series are very special cars. You have to own one to really appreciate how good they are. M8 however, not ever going to compete with 911. They are just too heavy to throw around. 840i, 840d are probably the best GT options, 850 would be the ultimate.

I'd like to see a comparative test among the m850i, SL 55 amg, 911 4s or 4 gts and the new granturismo trofeo (also awd). Also, too bad jaguar doesn't offer anything in this segment anymore

    Interesting review.
It’s a shame that BMW can’t find that sweet spot of ride/comfort, and handling as they did in the M5 CS. Surely it can’t be that hard to configure?
Also, you mentioned that the M8 has rear seats that fold down- is this new? In your original comparison with your M2 competition, this wasn’t the case.

Unbelievable that this M8 Competition did 0-60 mph in 2.78 seconds. THAT'S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS for a car that is that heavy. It punches well above its weight, and that is just a ballistic machine. BMW really does know how to build fast cars.

I think the main issue is that its the M8 Comp. version like with the X5M Comp with both vehicles BMW turned the aggression on the suspension too much to where it hinders its comfort. for a SUV or a GT car. I think it would be better to just get the M850 version or just the plain M8, same with the X5.

Finally a review that rightfully points out that the main competitor to this car is the BMW M4. The main problem of this car is that it's way overpriced, and it doesn't offer any benefit over the M4, other than being the more expensive car (which to some buyers seems to be a selling point...).

Recently traded in my superb 840d Convertible in Dravit Grey for a new (and yes, heavily discounted M8 Convertible!!). I would have loved another 840d, but that is no longer an option. So in favour of an Xdrive option and no real chance of securing a build slot (and discount) for an M850i I opted for a brand new unregistered M8 with big discount. I chose another ‘8’ as I am struggling with the design/tech filtering on to all other BMW models. Less ‘drivers car’ and more ‘techie wet dream’. Can say that after 3000 miles I do enjoy driving something a bit rare and having many bad experiences with Porsche UK (a previous car) nothing would get me to leave the BMW brand except for one thing….BMW’s obsession with technology not driving!!! One thing I have noticed since M8 Competition ownership…….The reduction in a***holes hanging off my rear bumper, so thats a positive angle that was not covered in the review!!😜

I have the '23 M850i Conv and I like it better than the full fat M8 due to the slightly smoother ride (and much lower price). It is still a bit rough for a grand touring coupe. It is big and heavy but surprisingly nimble for nearly 4800lbs. Real world performance is no different M850i vs M8. I cannot use the full performance of the M850i so nearly another 100bhp doesn't matter on the street and who would really take an M8 Conv to the track? Coupe maybe. My M850i came with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 5 RF tires, which are surprisingly good for a RF. It is a daily driver, and I have snows on it now. Summers going back on soon.
I have had several other BMWs over the years, including a couple of M3s (E90). That was much more of a hooligan car. Far less refined, but also less isolated and the S65 V8 is a very entertaining engine. I agree the new M4 Conv is a better driver than the 8 but I cannot get past the face. I just cannot. BMW has gone in a direction I cannot follow. The 8 series price is silly for what it is - but I really enjoy mine. I like the V8 rumble. I like the specialness. It is the prettiest BMW out there now (which is admittedly not a really high bar). No surprise it is going out of production in 2025 and is not going to be replaced. The 8 series is going away (again).
Not sure what my next car will be....
I agree, the P-Zero is nowhere near as good a the Pilot 4S. I had both on my Jag F-Type R and the Pilot 4S was a night and day difference over the P-Zero. Neither should be driven in the cold but the P-Zero is useless below 45 deg F (7 deg C). PS4 gives better ride, less twitchy, better grip (in dry and wet). I will be switching to it when I replace the Goodyears in the M850i. And I am NOT a brand ambassador for Michelin. But if Michelin wants to talk.......
Excellent review, as always. Nicely done Joe.

I accept its quicker than the M5C, but I just cant get on with the rear end looks wise (much like a X6M vs a X5M - just nope) and the fact an M5C is less money with better daily potential is the go for me!

What is the parking assist like on BMWs as this is a massive car, just wondered as I have a Mercedes and a lot of people say they don’t use the park assist because it’s slow and you end up holding the traffic up for longer than if you parked it yourself.
Nice looking motor though and the 0 to 60 for a car this size is insane.

I had park assist on my GLE43 Coupe which worked abysmally. Constantly failing to scan spots and hitting the kerb so I just gave up with it.
Recently got an 840i and was hesitant to try the park assist, as I didn't want to kerb the wheels despite previously getting away with it on my tank of a GLE - to my surprise it works exceptionally well. It's literally a perfect park every time and it's far quicker and easier to use than the merc equivalent. Important to note the GLE was a 16 plate and the BMW is a 20 plate as the technology has changed a hell of a lot.
