Having worked for the Humber pilot service 72/73 I can relate to boarding and taking off pilots in atrocious weather, more so when it was wind over tide at the mouth of the river.Once or twice pilots had to go with the ship because it was unsafe to go alongside,no helicopters in those days.Roly 🇬🇧
I work in Rotterdam but never been a captain, pilot or anything but have been a shipping agent as in the agent for the companies that own the vessels. Every port of call Id go on board asap, but most of the time just after berthing. Occasionally though, I'd be on a pilot one too to board earlier. Thankfully the times it was windy, she was already sailing behind a dam breaking the waves. But when I climbed those ladders, my sick mind always had to think about:: If i would fall or let go, I would be sucked so much under it, and those speeds of the vessel still are so fast compared to even thinking about swimming to catch up and be rescued ) NL
This notification came through just as I was walking in to work this morning. I've been waiting all day to get home to watch it on the big screen. Frank's boats are always great to see in action and his videos never let me down. Thanks Frank, keep 'em coming mate. 🍺🍺🍺🍺
The Pilots are amazing. The skill set, piloting great ships in and out of port, and getting on and off the ship! In rough weather what they accomplish is breathtaking. I don't know what they get paid but they earn every penny. Love and respect from pdx. 🌹
In case of emergency ma'am so there's another pilot boat standing by to assist her for example like this, A heavy weather encounter.. In my opinion, I hope I answer your question somehow..
Pilots definitely have balls of steel. I once saw a video of Hamble marine police avoiding bordering a trawler as it was too rough. Like a millpond compared to the conditions pilots operate in!
Those pilot boats look amazing. We currently use our tugboat for pilot shuttles but we were about to get some actual pilot boats I was excited to run but the deal fell through :(
There is maximum of 10% of survival rate if you miss the deck or are swiped off the ladders. In 5 seconds you are sucked into propeller with utmost certainty. Especially in a ship where back if lifted like that and propeller(s) is almost surface piercing.
Has anyone tried flying the boat above the water on a ''wing like'' stabilizer to stay above the waves and stable next to the ship to board, like racing sail boat are doing ?
On boat to ship Pilot transfers: This is the absolute stupidest primitive thing, I've ever seen. They invented braces and hoists, decades ago. You put on the brace jacket, and attach it to a quick release hoist or pulley lift, that lowers or raises up, the Pilot. Sometimes it's worth it, to break old stupid traditions. Especially where the loss of life, is possible. If this is a rite of passage, it's idiotic.
Nah. My ass staying on the cargo ship. Where to gentlemen? I'll catch an Uber back from China or something, don't worry about it. And if it's getting on the ship, they can find their way. Park anywhere it's cool.
Incredible footage again. Gratefull that you keep sharing these awesome clips with us. Thank you so much Frank and the team!
hats of to those harbour pilots for sure... great footage too folks

@@frencedaveocbena1150 Thank you
@@frencedaveocbena1150 Actually, just one pilot boat, other two are on sea trials. ( see description)
That looks absolutely terrifying!
My father was a NY/NJ Harbor Pilot.
Nice finish with the Lighthouse.
Gran trabajo de los capitanes de lanchas pilotos
Hey Frank ! Your vids are always to short :) Nice work again :)
Wonderful video!
Wow very nice and beautiful
Anybody cares to explain to me, why can't the bigger ship just stop and wait for the pilot to board or disembark safely without so much risks?
I got seasick just watching this. I can't imagine having to that in rough or cold weather
Safety and firsh captain... 👍
Just amazing 😮
Love videos
It was about time the ship gave the pilot boat some Lee.

And ovaries of steel! Women are also pilots!
Awesome 👏

Great views, love it.
It's an extremely attendance which caused a deadly accidents for pilots at Port Said north entrance of Suez Canal area .

My great grandfather was a river pilot in Cork
May God bless you all brave men. Keep you safely. RESPECT. 😮❤

Bugger that job!
Cool 😎
Nice video
Sietas-Yard, Hamburg/Germany, type 168-ship, nice situation calling Cork.
That first ship is hauling ass. From my experience on cruise ships when the pilot gets on the ship is going very slow.
Three pilot boats? Hanging out on the windward side
Amazing

Women are also pilots!
No point fannying around in the wake of the ship, get alongside and have the pilot aboard.
Oh my God and Holy Mother ✓
I worry more than even when I got married ✓ Very touching scene...
😱🤢🤮 Seriously impressive stuff!

Surely they can do it over Zoom these days 😜

I haven't heard of marine pilots before. Can't the captain do what they do?
They navigate the ship safely from uncommon waterways the captain is not familiar about but the ship is still in hands of the captain.
There must be a better solution than this.
E.g. guidance from land with cameras and audio
brass ball club
Can't the ship follow the PILOT boat? It's the same without risking a human life.
🎖👍
