I am just seeing some of your videos now in June 2022. I usually dont comment on videos I watch but I really wanted to take a second to say that your videos are very informative, and they are easy to understand what's going on, and most importantly why you are showing the tests and simulations you are, to me is just as important as the actual steps involved. Thank you for sharing your knowledge here.
The frequencies are called sine waves also know as test tones. They usually come in 0db ( full scale ) -5db and -10db. For this test of finding box tuning you can use -5db or -10db. 0db at too loud of volume could damage your sub. 0db is only for SPL competition. Def keep your head unit or radio half to 2/3 volume. You would use -5db tones from 20-70 Hz for subs unless you know about what your box tuning is. Start at 20Hz and go up to 70Hz by 1Hz or 2Hz ( 20,21,22 or 20,22,24,26 ) If u think u know the tuning, Ex: builder says 33 Hz tuning on your ported box. Then test 30Hz - 38Hz -5db tones. You should be in the right range to find the tuning by the least movement of the sub if the box is built half decent lol. Test tones are also used to set gains on Head units, Phones, ( source audio ) DSP’s & amplifiers. Hope this helps anyone undertstand who may have missed something in the video.
Yes, thank you. Now I actually understand what it means for a sub box to be "tuned" to a specific frequency - I would love to figure it out just by measuring, I bought a car with a sub in it, and the previous owner didn't have any idea about what wattage anything was or type of speaker - he said he just asked the sound guys to give him the best for a certain amount of money - I just ordered an oscilloscope, so as it's on its way I have to figure out what exactly type of speaker it is (it's a Digital Design that is all I know), no labels or markings on it whatsoever except 'DD' and a huge magnet with Digital Designs imprinted on it (it's a 10" speaker hole but the speaker is about 9" I'm not sure exactly) - so I'm going to remove the speaker again, take a bunch of pictures and measurements and send it to Digital Designs to see if I can get the specs for it. I am an audiophile who wants it to sound perfect, but thanks, I just came across your channel, I'll scope out the rest of your videos :-D Thankss
I like bass mekanic test tones on a CD. Its always clear 26-28 seems to hit the loudest but I don't know. Thanks for teaching me something Jacob ill try to use your method to find the exact hz my box is tuned to.

@@JacobViral2 I’m a little confused this portion is easy thanks ,,, curious about cabin transfer or cabin peak I use my meter for that to gain spl should I shoot to make cabin and tuning close or a little under my cabin peak seems to be 33 ,,, I’m doing 57.5 looking for 60 ..
Some good info. I kinda new this before, but your video showed me the importance of doing this type of test. It gives you valuable tuning info. Thanks for valuable content
Based off music choice, SPL goals, port area size, fs of sub, box layout/design, and/or bandwidth range preferred. Most boxes play half octave below tuning if ported.
The most effective method is to test for the impedance modulus. For correct tuning. Not for those awful sounding "Burp" efforts. But a correctly tuned Helmholz You will get an equal ripple reading of modulus.
When you put your head/body into the port, don't you alter the tuning frequency of the box/port? Since the tuning frequency is decided by the port area and length of the port?
Half octave below tuning. Here’s a playlist th-cam.com/play/PLkYp1Fj-99b0pFNxaohIxCaer8VxQVZ2j.html&si=oCrLonWVEGvfwDpV on audio topics including tuning amp all parts
So first I find the loudest my door speakers can go before distortion with no gain and lpf then tune the amp setting the gain and lpf with the music volume still 75% (just before distortion) and then i can turn it down to like 50% then do the tone test till the sub moves less to find the box tune then set ssf half octave down ? Would that be the correct step by step method ?
I’m gonna try this. I found a blueprint for a box and just had it built. I have no idea what my boxe is tune to Right now….But hopefully this will tell me my box tuning
One thing I didn't understand, low frequencies in all speakers forcing the woofer the move more back and forth as you go down. and med to high frequencies the woofer need less movement but much faster ones. that's why subs have bigger rubber diameter with slow bigger movement and tweeter are smaller and almost have non. so I don't understand how looking on the speaker can give any information. I did some testing my self and find that you can seat in front, play the frequencies and most lower audible frequency you hear is mostly the box tune frequency, like if 30 is barley heard (not felt) and 40 is audible to your ears then it's probably 40 hz.
What is this information used for? Now i understand how to find what my enclosure is tuned for. But can i now adjust my settings based of this information to improve my experience while using the sub?
So 35hz is the max on my subsonic filter. Just leave it at 35 then do these test, and move the filter where the woofer is not moving/ bottoming out? Thank you for the video shit confusing me.
How to do this with avr at home? What volume should i set my master volume? My sub amp is already set properly But i don't know what master volume should i use?
Jacob Viral2 Okay thanks cause I was told by box is tuned to 34hz sometimes I wish I would have told them 32hz but they said that’s low in the dirt for regular music
@@JacobViral2 i have an idea. My buddy has a tiny dog and a 4th order box. We can put the dog in the port and burp it at different frequencies and see how the dog reacts. If it comes out of the box right away then Im guessing the frequency it close to tune?

Hi brother jacob, got a few questions. (Side Note, Love my bass to hit lows that shake my soul and heart) 1. Do the Hz of a Subwoofer, lets say a sub is tuned at 25-500hz. Should I build a sub box (ported) and tune it to 25hz aswell to compliment the sub's 25hz or not? or should i tune it higher to 35hz-40hz. Because most prefab/custom sub boxes are tuned at 32hz to 36hz. But most sub hz be around 24-27hz. I don't get it. Like kicker compr's dual 10. Box is tuned to 30hz but subs go lower then that and are about 27hz. 2. Is it a problem if I buy a amp to compliment my subs peak rms watts rating rather then the normal rms watts rating? Lets say i've got a kicker compr 12 the rms is 500watts and peak is 1000wats, most people say get a amp that is 500watts not 1000watts. But i personally want to get something in between, a 800watts amp would do. So is that a problem or not. 3. How should i make my enclosure and sub be the hardest hitting and also loudest that people can hear me from blocks away and also can play lows so well my heart and soul feels it. Thats all bro
Usually sub can play half octave below box tuning. Tune any lower then 30hz means you won’t want sub to play loud above 40hz. Always best to get a sub amp rated 140-200% rms power to have play room and not max amp out. Tune mid 30s to play to 26-30hz range, tune higher will be louder but not as lows.
Yeah put more power on your Amp like he said, your not gonna turn the gain up 100% anyway or it'll sound like crap. I had 2 kicker compr 12s on a 1500w rms 3000w peak Amp for years and played em loud all the time never blew one
I'm just now getting back into subs and amps as an adult and I have never seen that type of box can you explain why it's like that please I'm curious to know what benefit it is to have the sub inside the outer box like this? I kinda like it.. Next the subsonic adjustment what do you do if you have a ported box but the amp doesn't have the adjustment for it? The Kicker cxa 1200.1 is the amp I have and am talking about. I’m kinda new at this. But wouldn’t your phone and your arm and everything else that you’re putting in the box to film it throw off the tuning by taking up space?
If a box is tuned to 40hz but the low pass filter on an amp only goes down to 80hz (sundown sfb2000d) will it still be able to get close to the 40hz? Or will it be limited cause of the amp? I’m ready to switch it out for another one
Thank you for the video.. I appreciate this cause it helped me. I just have one off-topic question; why does your car interior look like the insides of a microwave oven? HAHAHA I love it!! Thanks again.
I have a question, I need to know my box tune specs so I can tune the subsonic. But it sounds like the subsonic needs to be set correctly in order to find the right box tune. So how do I do one without the other
Is tuning all based on the box? Or can bigger displacement subwoofers effect tuning? I recently bought a box (2 15s) that was custom built and is tuned at 32hz. So would that mean that any 15 inch subwoofer I put in the box still be at or around 32Hz?
Spec out in box calculator the tuning. Play a test tone sweep th-cam.com/play/PLkYp1Fj-99b2idXulV19eVzlIiPcXR2CD.html&si=9zgxbQufk0J-ZsTT to see where it starts to unload.
So after finding out what's my peak can I tune my amp with that hz test tone? Say my peaks 34hz do I use a 34hz test tone to retune or do I stick with 40? Also would I change the subsonic lv?
@@JacobViral2so was you telling him to play a test tone of the 34hz? cause my speaker plays 30hz but you know they say play an 40hz test tone to set. So which test tone should I use?? 30 or 40?
🤔 so when woofer don't flex alot thats the final hz box tuning??? 🤷♂️ isnt it tha sign wave that does that... the higher hz tha less the woofer gonna flex right?
I’m confused man, I thought in order to set your subsonic filter you need to know what your box is tuned to... I thought you had to put your subsonic all the way down and then do this test
Yeah it has to be turned down all the way because the person that customized the box didn’t have a subsonic option while they were making it. Makes sense to me
very helpful videos my wife would kill me tho if i rolled around with my car looking like a carpentry shop, ive had to make my install stealth in the minivan, you can barely tell there are two 12s, or any wires in car all over...clean. when shes in car, i usually just turn the subs off and run highs/or run subs at low power via gain knob up front under dash, about 19 volts...barely pushing 200 watts...when hes not in, i crank them up near full power...tho two type rs @ 2ohm pound hard at 42 volts or near 900 watts lol
That not necessarily true about the point being when the speaker moves the less. I've seen/had speakers that start moving at volume 26 with a 40hz tone playing and doesn't clip until volume 35, speakers moving aggressively.
Still complicated to me bro I' need you tosending my measures for my 3 cvr 12s kicker 4ohms want to have them in a 4 hole ported box tuned lowest they go on an 1800 audiopipe anyway keep up the good video work

Hi brother jacob, got a few questions.
(Side Note, Love my bass to hit lows that shake my soul and heart)
1. Do the Hz of a Subwoofer, lets say a sub is tuned at 25-500hz. Should I build a sub box (ported) and tune it to 25hz aswell to compliment the sub's 25hz or not? or should i tune it higher to 35hz-40hz. Like kicker compr's dual 10. Box is tuned to 30hz but subs go lower then that and are about 27hz.

Hey there good tutorial, could you please send me the link to getting that exact app on your phone for testing thanks
Where do I get that test tone
I’ll upload them eventually but tone generators can be used to
The 🐐
I have a question, I need to know my box tune specs so I can tune the subsonic. But it sounds like the subsonic needs to be set correctly in order to find the right box tune. So how do I do one without the other
Start with subsonic or and find your tuning that way then adjust subsonic from my other video on how to do that.
Is tuning all based on the box? Or can bigger displacement subwoofers effect tuning? I recently bought a box (2 15s) that was custom built and is tuned at 32hz. So would that mean that any 15 inch subwoofer I put in the box still be at or around 32Hz?
Subwoofer affects tuning to for your peak frequency but box is tuned the same regardless of the sub just the sub changes your frequency variance.
Anyone know what frequency 10compxr
Depends on the box style
How do you know how low you can play
Spec out in box calculator the tuning. Play a test tone sweep th-cam.com/play/PLkYp1Fj-99b2idXulV19eVzlIiPcXR2CD.html&si=9zgxbQufk0J-ZsTT to see where it starts to unload.
Ultimate Car Audio App is what I use for test tones and sweeps.
Very cool video!!🤛🤛🥋
Thanks Don!
So after finding out what's my peak can I tune my amp with that hz test tone? Say my peaks 34hz do I use a 34hz test tone to retune or do I stick with 40? Also would I change the subsonic lv?
I have videos on setting each setting on the amp to watch but in general I would tune based from the tunings for the results yes.
You are correct. He is a little all over the place in this video
@@SynergyAVE alright thanks for confirming , so I’m not completely stupid then lol
Yeah it has to be turned down all the way because the person that customized the box didn’t have a subsonic option while they were making it. Makes sense to me
Awesome fkn video ....but ultimate car audio is the best to do box building
Great idea of an app for tone generator
Just to verify..
Keep bass boost off amp always?
Everybody I ask says always leave bass boost off on a amp.
Have you ever used it?
correct I never use it for Agee reasons showed in my video.
very helpful videos
my wife would kill me tho if i rolled around with my car looking like a carpentry shop, ive had to make my install stealth in the minivan, you can barely tell there are two 12s, or any wires in car all over...clean. when shes in car, i usually just turn the subs off and run highs/or run subs at low power via gain knob up front under dash, about 19 volts...barely pushing 200 watts...when hes not in, i crank them up near full power...tho two type rs @ 2ohm pound hard at 42 volts or near 900 watts lol
Thanks and yea it’s a project Explorer gutted from multiple walled systems. More videos coming daily stay tuned. 👍
That not necessarily true about the point being when the speaker moves the less. I've seen/had speakers that start moving at volume 26 with a 40hz tone playing and doesn't clip until volume 35, speakers moving aggressively.
Hey bro keep up the good works
Still complicated to me bro I' need you tosending my measures for my 3 cvr 12s kicker 4ohms want to have them in a 4 hole ported box tuned lowest they go on an 1800 audiopipe anyway keep up the good video work
Is say 34hz preferred over 42hz ? Does it matter if the tune is higher or lower?
Depends on your musical range you want and if SPL or demo
I have a big box ima try this but my question is can a box be to big
It can yes
