Your model was built before the infamous series of John Deere's with quickly rusting decks due to poor paint and prep quality.
These decks are cheaply made, I swear they're from China like the pulleys on them.
The metal is so thin it develops stress cracks.
My cheap 85 Murray never did that.
I've seen a lot worse decks, with paper-thin rusty metal. I've done the same patching you mentioned, where porous or weak/worn areas have to be rebuilt, to keep the deck usable. I love your videos that are real-world, with the burn-throughs, and fewer out-takes, compared to others. That's the way it is when repairs are made, and you work around the hassles and finish the job properly. Well done.
@@boots7859 That's just how it is Now, through away society, no one does maintenance any more! I still change Oil On all My 4 Stroke Motors Every November Like clock work, I Don't Pressure Wash Any, Play's havoc with seals and Electrics.
@@boots7859 How did society get to this point? Now manufactures design stuff for this very customer mindset.
I have the same model- it's a pretty solid machine except for the finish, which was flaking off before any of the surface rust started. It was pretty obvious that the surface of the deck wasn't prepared properly to receive paint, and it had zero primer.
It's not only the owners fault that the paint flakes off.
Those welds aren't going anywhere soon. Serious job there, Don! Great work!
With how the prices of those machines are rising, this kind of repair is going to be more and more common because people won't toss the machine because a new one is $3k now where not all at that long ago they were $1.5k. I love repairing decks like that, I find it very satisfying to put something back in service. I love how you added the extra welds 👍 Gotta love Stens, they are always adding new parts to their catalog, saves a lot of money not having to buy the OEM. I order quite a bit from Stens.

They don’t own the tools most of the time. Nor have the inclination nor knowledge to use them. Not even a power blower, scraper, etc.
That Powder Coating on Mower decks (and many Other applications) should be Banned by the industry. I would be ashamed to bring such a filthy machine to a shop. Thanks for not having 'music'. Never needed. Great Fix. The price of the reduced size 'rattle cans' is ridiculous. 42" with 2 blades is great. That Series has always been good to me. Hopefully your Customer appreciates the extra effort.

There decks are very thin material and best to keep them clean top and bottom after every use 😊
How do you keep them clean at the bottom?
You can't lay the machine on the side, can you?
@@Drottninggatan2017 Lawn mower jack. The only problem is after I mow, edge, weed-eat and blow off the sidewalks and driveway, the last thing I feel like doing is dragging out the jack, lifting the mower and scrape clippings off the bottom. lol I do blow clippings off the top of the deck though so there's that at least. This guy's mower was totally neglected.
You can buy and install an adapter that allows you hook up your garden hose to the top of the deck with a hole that goes thru to the underside. You turn on the hose and run the blades at full speed for about 5 minutes. Turn off the hose and run another 5 minutes to dry the underside. Works very well at keeping the underside clean.
@@Drottninggatan2017 what you do is buy 2male hose fittings with nuts. Then drill 2 holes either side of the deck. Make up 2connecting hoses into 1 And connect to water 💦 tap switch on and start your ride on and blade's going. That's how l clean the underneath of my mowers. I'm from Melbourne AUSTRALIA 👍🤠

Nice rescue. Consider using Rustoleum Rust Reformer either as a base coat ... or as the only coat if black is desired. You only have to lightly remove loose surface rust before applying directly to the rust itself. From the product page: "bonds with rusty metal and instantly transforms it into a non-rusting surface." I've used it with good results.

Wow. Thanks so much for the detailed video. I do have rusted areas on the LT150 I just purchased used. I don't know how to weld so perhaps I'll be able to find a welding shop that I can bring to here in Central Eastern Florida as needed.
Looks better than new 😊. I scrapped a mower recently and the blade was on upside down, funny how the blade shows no wear 😂.

Informative and tastefully concise as always, Don. I have a deck in much worse repair as it has holes and weak metal all over the place. Yes, I could buy a new one but they start at over $1000 Canadian and the machine is more than 20 years old. It's for an older Cub Cadet Series 2000 tractor and I really like the cut quality of it overall as well as the fact that the transmissions in both of my machines are shaft drive from a horizontal shaft engine.

I weld decks when brackets break. I usually weld top and under the deck, and also weld the other bracket better. They use minimal amount on welding at the factory it seems. Then hit it with some primer and match the paint if possible. Good job.

Haven’t had the brackets break off but had all the other deck rust issues. (2006 JD 102 with the same 42” deck)
Was able to keep it going for quite a few years, but it eventually became too rusted to even weld properly.
I cut a lot of wet grass unfortunately, and not having an inside place to store the tractor didn’t help.
Definitely got my money’s worth out of it, but finally had to get something new to replace it. Tractor is still good, so still wanting to find a decent deck to keep it as a backup
But the JD Z320R that I got as a replacement is phenomenal! The difference in the 42” Edge deck on the tractor and the 42” Accel Deep deck is amazing in the thick wet stuff lol

It is hell to weld rusted metal and have to fill in burn through,is it it? I do it the same way you do - use a welding rod to help fill in the burn through. I would have welded it DC+ at about 85A with a 5/32 6013 rod. Then, knock the slag off and hit it with a 7014 rod where I could. I love 7014 rods - make beautiful down hand welds.
I had to replace the spindles and pulleys on my Craftsman YS4500 mower deck this Spring...I figured that wasn't so bad considering I got it in 2007. I even put a new belt on for good measure...lol. I haven't seen any issues with the brackets...so far...but it's good to know to look for cracks or signs of fatigue around them...maybe catch it before they break off.

I'm thinking that if I were doing that repair to my own deck I would strip it down and get it sand blasted and completely painted...due to the peeling paint. But it wouldn't be cost effective to pay someone (like you) to do that probably.

My JD is a barn find over 30 Years old, yet the paint is still on deck!

Thank you for the very informative video. After reinstalling the deck everything worked fine except that I lost both of the rear hanger rods during the first mow. I left the washers off since I had trouble installing them with the locking pin. Obviously, a mistake. Do you have any hints or suggestions for me? By the way my right bracket is rusted through, the left is fine. Just as you mentioned.

Is it a bad design, or owners who never clean their equipment?
I just can't get my head around the mindset of "I'm not going to do basic maintenance, when it breaks I'll spend hundreds to pay someone to do it for me". Maybe it belongs to an elderly person who can't.
Looks to me like a little cleaning, touch up the rust before it gets to bad, may have gone a long way. But hey, it keeps you in business. Thanks for the video. Just subscribed.

Great video as always! In your opinion, do you believe that this repair could have been avoided had the deck been regularly cleaned of debris and/or covered when stored?
The bracket still would have broken as it is a weak point. If the deck had been properly maintained it wouldn't be as rusty!
I thought the same thing. There is no excuse for not cleaning mower after use. Those mowers should never be stored outside.
It’s a heck of a lot of trouble to put a bigger plate over it and heat and bend down in place, but it will stay put, also weld inside also if it’s not too thin
Since I'm not a great welder I would try to bolt an angle bracket to the hanger and the adjacent deck for extra support.

Nice looking welds. I like to keep mine clean and take a wire brush on my angle grinder to it every now and then. Other than the deck it looks like a new mower

Some people just don't think about cleaning the deck off. My lawn mower is 8yrs. Old rust free and I blower the entire mower off after every use. I bet that repair out lasts the rest of the deck

3 passes isn't too overkill. I never finished my certification coarse but wanted to learn welding so I can fix my own stuff. Had a very wise instructor and 3 passes not to overkill. My instructor and I used to go out back and smoke on break and he took 0 bs from anyone who showed potential. He only talked about it once but he was an veitnam army vet, airborne from helicopters,not to rant but he wasn't BS's me and he took no bs. He wanted anyone who was skilled enough to be able to pass the welding test at John Deere Hitachi plant nearby. Please use less heat on your first pass after tacking,all that stopping and starting is fast but no good in Long run. Porosity can happen with gas, always snip the wire even if cost time as it helps not blow through and arc is immediately controllable and hot.the edges and undercut make great crack starting points. If you already have a full pass at lower temps and wire speed the subsequent and required hotter passes will all fuse together seamlessly. My final test in MIG 1 required multiple pass on 2 3/8's mild steel plates with a 30 degree beveled face and a 3/16 air gap between plates. Required jigs to set up and took 6 passes to fill. Cut and rounded plate into 2 strips 7in long by 2in wide and had them bent into a horse shoe basically to test for failure. Long story I passed with weld letting go at 145,000 PSI on gage and this deck doesn't need that good of a job but your technique needs some hood time or a reminder. I done those courses in 2016 straight out of high school and even today I always snip my wire when it gets screwy. I'm into vintage garden tractors so by nature I'd be more careful even though I come to your channel for advice and education,not trying to sound like keyboard warrior trying constructive criticism and not always great at it.
I can't stick weld to save my life. Plasma torch fast and fun, but check out air arc gouging it's like reverse stick welding. A form of cutting in heavy machinery like revoming welds from huge loader or excavator buckets and their teeth or anything heavy in general. Can be used on 3/8 plates at lower amps and smaller copper coated graphite electrodes.

It always amazes me how little people take care of their equipment. You would never see my deck with any debris on it especially that much.

Don, as always nice job. I think the welds will outlast the rest of the machine 😉. After seeing the before I can say I have seen dirtier machines. It amazes me that people don’t use a blower to clear out the deck after each use. It’s bad enough when the grass sticks to the underside but there are no excuses for not cleaning the top side. Even it the owner doesn’t have a pressure washer a periodic hose down under the hood with a hose will go a long way. With the new pulley’s, belt and blades he should be good for another 10 years 🤪

Yes super hard to find! If your machine is in good condition it may be worth buying just the deck shell.
This is why I don't mow a wet lawn.

Look at the crap on top of that deck! Just us a leaf blower and clean underneath once in a while..
And some people should just take better care of the equipment, blow it off with your blower or hose it off after every user or at least a few times a year, don’t store it outside is another, clean the bottom of the deck twice a year…
