I don't think he lives a privileged life, because they live in an apt with his mom who is raising a teenage boy by herself. Sometimes you make wrong decisions in life, he realized it at that moment and the emotion was on camera. Nothing wrong with that, and luckily for him everything worked out.
I don't think being terrified of falling down hundreds of stairs from hundreds of feet in the air makes you ""privileged". Those steps he climbed are much worse in person. Looking down them can send you into a full-blown panic attack if you are afraid of heights. I'm guessing stephen didn't know how afraid he was until he actually got up there.
