Sea Turtle Dot Mandala - Tutorial - Step by Step

  • Watch me paint this cute little Wooden Sea Turtle Dot Mandala step by step... it's a challenge painting objects that are not your traditional round shape but so much fun! Hopefully this will inspire you to think outside the square... or circle... and paint your own favourite animal, shape or design that you haven't tried before... just remember, there is no right or wrong, just enjoy the process...
Most of the paint featured on the body are made by me using mica powders mixed with pouring medium as a bit of an experiment... it is a bit messy though... there is mica everywhere! Under my nails, on my bench and in the sink... mmm... need to be careful next time... I was having too much fun!! Believe it or not I raided my soap making stash of mica powers and they worked a treat... little bit runny but still very effective! 3 of the mica powders are from Bath Bomb World... and colours were Aqua Marine, Olive and Jungle Juice... Think I should have added a bit more mica to thicken it a bit... Pigment may sink the next day when using pouring medium... just give it a gentls stir before use... I am on a mission now to find the perfect medium and mica blend to get a paint that is not too runny or not too thick... I would love any suggestions, hint or tips if you have tried this... I have a glass mulling tool on the way... stay tuned! The Gold featured on the shell is from Global called Antique Gold... the colour on the head an feet is called Black Grey from the Mont Marte Signature 12 pack... both of these paints were mixed with pouring medium and a bit of water... roughly a ratio of 1 part pouring medium 3 parts paint and water as need to get the right consistency...
UPDATE... I have experimented and mixed my mica powders with an Acrylic matt medium... and it was perfect! Did a little happy dance... I have yet to try gloss medium but the matt dried to a beautiful pearly metallic satin finish...
Start by mixing powder first with a small amount of water... only enough to turn it to a cream consistency... so powder is just dissolved then add the medium... this was a little bit thick so I added a touch of water to give the perfect consistency... don't add the power straight into the medium as it turned out lumpy... the mica did not blend nicely... dissolve it in a tiny bit of water first... a video showing this is coming soon... this is just what works for my particular powders and medium... you will need to experiment to get your desired results... It was no real measurements as brands may vary but roughly 1/4 - 1/3 of the mica mix and 3/4 - 2/3 of the medium... and adjusted with a bit of water... hope this helps... have fun!
UPDATE #2... I tried K Mart matt medium... its quite thin... you may need to add a gel medium to thicken this one slightly... makes me wonder if my original matt medium has thickened over time... mmm... I will keep you updated... I'm on the hunt for the perfect mix!
This little turtle measures 29.5cms x 24cms... The guidelines are drawn using a watercolour pencil... rings are 1cm apart... I pretty much make my designs up as I go along.. I never have a plan! That is the fun bit... I like a challenge... and yes, this little guy was definitely a challenge...
The Ball Stylus Dotting tools I am using in the video are from the McGill Paper Blossoms Tool Kit and the dotting rods are from Happy Dotting Company...

Simply love your palette choices, as well as your beautiful MDF turtle cutout which is realistic. Great to see you sell the cutout also.

You are so welcome! I'm still learning what is the best thing to mix it with... I just wanted to try the pouring medium as it is readily available in most countries and a lot of people tend to have it laying around... some brands may work better than others and mica powders may vary but experimenting is half the fun... I find the mica does settle down the bottom if you look at it the next day but a quick stir and it is all good again... this was slightly runny but still worked fine... as soon as I find a perfect mix, I will share... 🥰

I really love your turtle and the colours you've chosen, its very well done. What a great idea with the mica powder and pouring medium, and thanks for writing so much information about how you do your art and what you use, its very helpful. Thanks so much, you are very talented. From one Aussie dotter to another.

Thanks so much... it means a lot... 🥰 I'm playing a lot with micas at the moment... I have a huge stash just screaming to be used... I have a glass muller on the way to help with the mixing process. With the mica powders I found bubbles are easily formed with just mixing... but if you spritz it with a bit of isopropyl alcohol every so often, this pops most of the bubbles and let it sit for a day... you will need to re-stir it... slowly, as I found the mica tends to settle a bit but most of the tiny bubbles should be gone... then re spritz it with more isopropyl alcohol and you are good to go!... in the past I have also added a tiny bit of gel medium to thicken if needed but I didn't do it with the little turtle...
Thanks again... hugs from you fellow Aussie 😘

This is simply so beautiful! I'll have to be on the lookout for a turtle this size to paint. I do love the colors you used even if they were a little messy!

Thanks so much! If you live in Australia, I have them in my shop... the link is in the description... If not, most craft stores should have MDF cutouts you could paint... fingers crossed... and yes, the paints were a bit too runny not to be messy but I loved painting with them! I am working on a formula to use micas so they are a bit more controllable... I will share once I work it out... stay tuned for more... 🥰

I'm so sorry.... at this stage no... If I do, down the track, which is a possibility, I will let everyone know... I did look into it when I started my channel but Aussie Post is making it hard... they are not guaranteeing delivery due to certain restrictions and I can't risk things not being delivered and me having to cover costs to get it returned... I am just a little business wanting to share the love to the rest of the world as best as I can through my videos... I really wish I could though... 😢

May I ask what varnish you use?

    • @wildwicksgifts
      @wildwicksgifts  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

On my mandalas, I tend to do a spray varnish... brush on varnish can lead to little unwanted bubbles if you are not careful... spraying is sooooo much easier... I use no particular brand... what ever I have sitting in my studio at the time... 😊

I have been painting and drawing as soon as I could hold a brush... as far as dot painting in particular, I have been doing it on and off for roughly 10 years... I tend to obsess over a particular painting style for a few months and have what my hubby and son call a 'shiny moment' and try something new... but, I always tend to gravitate towards mandalas whether it painted, dotted, drawn etc... I find mandala designs extremely meditative... hope you enjoy the journey on my new little channel... thanks again... 🥰
