Sir, I agree with you about the extra homework. But I noticed two things about production companies. They don't stay out of fan spaces and they don't understand fan mindset. I rather watch something indie, made on a shoestring budget and shot on one location primarily. Like reservoir dogs. But the people who like franchises do so because of the familiarity. I loved the lethal weapon movies. And when the ending with the photos was shown, I felt a sense of nostalgia. It was like a family reunion. I knew Murtaugh. I knew Riggs. They were like family. That is exactly why franchises are not for everyone and should not be over budgeted. And interfering with fan spaces is dumb. Fans indulge in fanfiction. Don't read it and pilfer from their work. Supernatural did that and it showed. Leave fan spaces alone.

@Midnight Movie Talk with Erick, a strange case in which a movie franchise seem to revive itself is with Fast & Furious. If it hadn’t been for the tragic death of Paul Walker to bring renewed interest to the series, I think it would faded into obscurity.

The franchise you didn't mention was Rocky. Stallone completely dialed it back for Rocky Balboa and I remembered why I loved the character.
That said, Kevin Feige has been conducting a master class on how to drive a franchise into the ground. I've been a Spidey fan since junior high. I loved X Men when it came out. I watched the 1st 2 Iron Man movies. I watched Guardians 1 and 2. I noticed that after the 1st movie I cared less about the characters. Jokes take the place of emotional connection and character development. And you're right, it's just too much damn work. There's so much content and you have to watch it all to understand any of it. I've got other shit to do than watch Disney+ and 20 movies just to see one new movie. Especially when I don't care about any of the characters.

I used to work with a dude that’s a huge fan of the punisher. I told him about how the character had a new show out (at the time) and he should check it out. He was excited about it but then I remembered that the character was set up in the brilliant season 2 of Daredevil. So in order to watch the character he loves and to get the most enjoyment out of it he’d have to watch not one but two seasons of a show about ANOTHER character that he might not even be that interested in just to get to the one show he may or may not even like about the character he enjoys. Lol so he watched a little bit of the Punisher show and thought it was just ok, which I’m assuming is because he didn’t watch Daredevil. Like you said, your asking your audience to do homework.

    • @Lilliathi

But that's the point, now your audience has massive FOMO, and needs to watch all the movies in your cinematic universe. Of course it'll tire your audience out in the long run, but the mid term profit is gold.

They got the damn formula backwards... ASS BACKWARDS...
The idea of giving audiences "homework" comes from Star Trek. People were SO in love with the series, that TV stations struggled when they tried to end it a couple times... The show was low budget sci-fi in the beginnings, and then it got canceled, and viewership plummeted... so they returned to the air... got some budget (friggin' surprise)... If you ever get the chance go back and watch a few of the original B&W seasons... They were DUMPSTER DIVING for parts and materials for props!!!
BUT then Star Trek brought out movies and one after another, they were SMASHING hits... SO the rest of Hollyweird got the message, "Hey, we can combine TV shows with cinema, and it'll just EXPLODE in popularity!"
Only, that's not how Roddenbury did it. He started with a rinky-dinky little low-budget TV show and MADE THE STORY... built the universe outward on messages LARGELY of hope. That's another reason to go back and watch original episodes and seasons. If you're not into the whole "bold bright future" ideal, it's fine... It takes MAYBE a half dozen (tops) in the B&W seasons to appreciate what they had going on, because you can see the chickenwire and cheesy Christmas tree lights that probably came out of a Dollar Store... Some of that sh*t's HILARIOUS when you know what to look for... or compare it to literally ANYTHING else broadcast on TV at the time.
It wasn't that making the audience do homework to "get" the movie builds a franchise. It's that an audience's grown LOVE for iconic Characters they've laughed with, cried with, and discussed all to hell till they were blue in the face WILL put butts in seats when there are tickets and over-priced popcorn involved. THAT is the operative lesson. A TV-show is a fine way to cast a hook for the audience, but STAY TRUE to the show... You can get away with that, and if you do it well, it can even pay off... screw it up, and you'll instantly ruin everything.
Originally, Star Trek didn't let the movies interfere with the TV Show, and then it did end, to be rebooted as "The Next Generation"... and that could co-exist alright with the remaining movies to be made, and they were CAREFUL... It got risky in the last one with Kirk & Picard sharing screen time... BUT they didn't force anyone to have to watch anything just to "get" the movie NOR did the movies become required watching to "get" the TV shows...
NOW, Hollyweird thinks they can just assign you homework or turn their backs and blame you for being too lazy to get a good story. If it was a good story, it could stand on its OWN merit. Simple as that. Audiences don't mind working a little bit to "get it". They'll learn languages to build a relationship with Characters in a film... BUT they don't need or want homework assignments just to be invited into watch a movie. It falls apart as quickly as trying to take the tail and wag the dog with it. ;o)

They have these reveals that are supposed to excite you, but I just laugh when there's this fanfare for some reintroduction to an element that I don't recognize or remember. Keep in mind that executives only understand profit margins and the MCU has been astonishingly profitable. More importantly, it's been astonishingly reliably profitable.
The problem is that after almost a decade and a half people are just burning out. It's too much stuff to keep track of over too long a time. I kind of suspect this would happen after Endgame. That was the big 'payoff' that they'd been building up.

In the case of Star Wars it would have to be very great indeed, but you could at least imagine it being possible in a theoretical sense. I'd say one thing he didn't touch on which is essential to why popular franchises fail and it's the fact they don't know when to give it up. Everyone loved Harry Potter and the franchise is still going on, but nobody cares. The interest in Starwars and MCU are declining as time goes on. And the same can be said for so many franchises. Don't go back to the Harry Potters and Lord of the Rings and Starwars time and time again. Find new franchises to start up for people to get interested in. Back in 70's, 80's. The checklist is
      1) within budget
      2) must have attractive woman and attractive men as hero and heroin
      3) relatable to every person and gender
      4) greenlighted script must be great
      Today Hollywood's checklist
      1) 1/4 budget must go to marketing
      2) must put minority characters
      3) must have sequel
      4) must have "strong woman as main character"
      5) script must be written by woman/man who are activist in some sort of community
      6) if everything failed, blame fans.

Same reason why a rock band's first album is the best; lightning in a bottle. It's almost impossible to recapture the brilliance of a single, isolated idea. If money is the motivator for a sequel, then that takes precedence over the original's sole priority to be a creative statement first and foremost.
With that said, Multiverse of Madness absolutely shames the first Doctor Strange and I genuinely have no idea how people can say they prefer the first, because as a story it's about as barebones as the first Thor, which people tend to malign. Curious, indeed.

    • @Vherstinae
      @Vherstinae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The reason is simple: barebones as it is, it's a movie about Doctor Strange while the "sequel" is a vehicle to make Strange as irrelevant as possible. He's shown up by America Chavez, one of the most offensively pandering and narcissistically written characters in recent history, and the entire movie is about Scarlet Witch and trying to make you feel bad for her. It's just another late Marvel bait-and-switch capitalizing on the popularity of one character to try pushing another as their replacement or, if not outright replacement, at least shifting the spotlight radically.

    • @Lifesizemortal
      @Lifesizemortal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Vherstinae I think its funny that people attribute all these bad qualities to America Chaves when she's literally relegated to a side character with fewer lines than Strange. Yes, her character is embroiled in central plot, but she's not paid mind in the same way that Strange and Scarlet Witch are written. I feel like I live in a multiverse where I saw a totally different movie than you did.
Also, Iron Man 3 pulled a bait and switch with its villain, and at the time, became one of the highest grossing comic book movies ever. And I hated Iron Man 3 for that.

I think something that really hurt Marvel's universe is we got Endgame and then we got essentially nothing for almost 2 years because of Covid. And during that time, things got very very weird in terms of importance. They hit their high note and then walked off the stage and tens of thousands, if not more, did re-watches where they got really tied to these characters.
And then Marvel started to write them off because they don't want to be superheroes for the rest of their lives. And they have to introduce these new characters and concepts to an audience, and guess what, most of their character introduction movies are mid and were from the beginning.
Most Marvel movies kinda suck, but it's the interwoven story and the "how are they gonna pull this off" that keeps us interested half the time. It's like a sport now. A portion of NBA fans talk about GMs and Front Office employees more than they do the players and the games. You're seeing that with Marvel. It's absolutely fascinating what they've been able to do.

He’s incorrect about marvel. What he’s saying only applies to films & entities that are considered original. Marvel has an entire fan base prior to any movie. The people watching for fun, are putting more into the success of the movies but the core fan base are here to visually see the comic storylines play out in live action. He also says, he would rather watch a one-&-done movie & marvel isn’t bringing those titles. They never have.
BUT, I’d say this is sound advice for films & filmmakers that aren’t building for a franchise. Thank you again for great content, Film Courage!!

No need to do so. Both are dead in the water. Or at least on life support. I can't imagine either going on for another decade, but Hollywood will try. Strange New Worlds has been a good try to freshen up Trek, but it only reminded folks of how perfect the original show was, even though the special effects were so primitive. The first group of actors, Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley, were the key, and the relationship between them made all the rest work. The scripts were top-notch, and the supporting actors and guest stars made it a grand adventure. Hard to match that lucky combo of factors. But they're going to keep trying.
As for Star Wars, how long can they keep beating that dead horse. Maybe Mandolorian can eek out a bit more time, but please, no more Solo or other lone character origin films. Let it rest in peace....

  • @MrHunterseeker

Why do popular franchises fail? Because the current set of writers/property holders decided they wanted to use their medium as a soapbox for politics and social justice and not for profits. They arbitrarily decided their fans were stereotypical white cis gendered men (See Star Trek) and decided they didn't want that demographic their fans anymore (Ever been to a Star Trek Convention? They hadn't obviously either= it's one of the most diverse places you will find). That is why all the new Star Treks are garbage. All the writers rooms in Hollywood are filled with EEOE hires and instead of talent, they decided skin color, and sexual preference is more important than having any idea about the subject matter, that is why you have Star Trek episodes that have no idea about the volumes of lore that have been written in the past, no official lore wrangler to edit what you write to keep it in line with past canon. All writing rooms are suffering this generation due to obvious a lack of talent, heck anyone can do better than what we have seen coming from Hollywood in the past 6 years. All movies are the same thing. All of them: Either the writing staff is using the movie to prop up politics, or social justice and its an already established franchise and they ruin the name of the shows (Star Trek/Star Wars) to promote agendas. Then theres the atrocious writing, some were done accidently, as you can see some actually tried, but then there are the ones that self sabotaged on purpose to attack the fictional fanbase that doesn't exist for that franchise (Star Trek/ Star Wars) Then there is the Movies and TV shows that have a diversity hire/EEOE that have never worked on a tv or movie before and have no idea how to film in dark places so you end up with a show like game of thrones final season where half the episodes were so dark no matter what setting you put your TV on, you cant see crap. Only black.

He is correct on all fronts less is more it's basically the past is repeating itself now. Back after John Carpenters Halloween came out everyone started to make horror. Movies it was non-stop horror movies for years. Then people grew tired of horror movies and wanted something new. Thats the past now the present Non-Stop for example superhero movies and shows Star Trek shows Star Wars same thing. Now people are getting tired of them and they want something new. These new companies and directors and things need to look to the Past because they are repeating the same mistakes. From the past and they will face the same consequences that is. People will stop watching them all together eventually. Thats what happened to the horror movies when they were made non-stop for years. People stopped caring about horror movies now people will stop caring about these movies and franchises.
Now about mixing TV shows and movies and having it work. Back before Disney owned Marvel they did it in a way that worked. They had their movie universe then they made a TV show called the Agents of Shield. I believe or something like that that was its own separate thing but it would. Have little things from the movies mentioned in the show in a way that you didn't need to see the movies. Like agent Carlson would say something like oh I meant this race before. When he was talking about his past that being the first Avengers movie. Then it would about after effects of movies like for example. It would say so and so was killed in this event so it referenced the movies. But it was its own separate thing so Marvel used to know how to do it but then Disney took over.

To me, the best franchise in modern cinema is Toy Story. The first three movies work perfectly together, and when they announced the fourth one, I thought: "Oh, no, they're going to ruin it!" But no, those geniuses Lasseter and Stanton made it work... and in the time of Disney no less! Toy Story has the best of the first three movies and the best of modern animation. It's a masterpiece in itself and it rounds up the whole franchise. But the cherry on top is that it sets up a potential new franchise with Woody and Bo that could be what episodes 7, 8, and 9 failed miserably to do. Of course, Disney being Disney they would ruin that new franchise, so I'm fine with the Toy Story franchise as it is. It's perfect.

I’m not sick of crossover, I’m just sick of terrible takes on shows that preach to me about my white male priviledge. However, they have to start to consider their core fanbase at this point. These shows are NOT going to appeal to the general audience no matter how you slice it. The average joe isn't cheering for Matt's cameo in No Way Home or willing to watch a six hour show to keep up with the new movie.
