@BRANDTzilla Indeed, I mentioned it in the video description. Just totally overlooked it when making this, it happens when something's made as quickly as this.
Although these are among your least popular videos (if you can call 10k views unpopular), I actually really like these. Just randomly booting up stuff from random disks and seeing what's there is cool and fun :)
Lazy Game Reviews Oooh a recent comment :D I am just watching all of your stuff from oldest to newest for the first time. Also just noticed that this 4 part series has two part 3's :P
Lazy Game Reviews Congrats on actually having a 10k+ video of yours considered less popular. That's a sign of success in my book. Especially with only two dislikes out of 174 at the time of writing.
+Lazy Game Reviews I never noticed the low view count on these videos. Really, it's a damn shame! I really enjoyed hearing your unscripted reaction to the random crap on these disks, haha. Hope you do another one anyway. Even finding old random applications could be interesting.
@lemonrind That's what I was trying to use, but it turns out it was the picture stabilizer making things go wonky. Near the end of the video I sorted it out.
@vwestlife That makes sense, I thought it looked much higher than normal 320x200 but the downside with these videos is I don't get to explore such trivia and I love useless trivia. It really does look amazing on a 5153 monitor! Thanks for the info. I also later found Space Commanders II on another disk, odd that Keypunch callously edited whatever they seemed to want to in these games.
@Ogma01 I remember the days well, I was still using old hardware well into the 90's... I always chuckle a bit to myself when people complain of a game having "eternal loading times" and they're only about 30-45 seconds. Try a couple minutes, or even 5 - 10 for cassette games!
@THOMASSU63 Yeah, it needed some work. I have seen some other versions of it, even under other names like Space Commanders, but I haven't paid much attention to them to see if they're any better though.
Had some Keypunch games for Apple II back in the day. Some were pretty fun. I remember D-Day was good. You had a tank at the bottom of the screen and had to prevent enemy troops from getting off their landing craft and running from the right to the left side of the screen. Probably one of the more memorable games from them.
I loved that Red Baron game. I had this or something very similar back in the late 80's when I had an 8088 PC clone. This and Ancient Art of War got a lot of play from me back then :)
I have Sopwith and Hopper (it saves the high score file as HOPPER.SCO, so I assume that's the correct name for the game), as well as Space Commanders II (the correct name, before Keypunch edited it) -- which is an excellent game, once you get used to the differences versus Space Invaders. It is a high-res 640x200 game, so that's why it's in monochrome (although I think a composite monitor might show some "artifacted" colors on it).
@mocthezuma Sopwith is pretty decent, I spent some time with it after this and had some fun. I still prefer games like SkyStrike. But the space invaders game? Heh, were we looking at the same game? It's common for SI clones to have only one shot at a time, as that's how the original game is as well, so I don't see that as an issue at all. The problems are that your ship starts at the top of the screen, you can fly through your shields and anywhere else, and the hit detection is sometimes off.
Sopwith for sure... Red Baron....Played that a lot actually.... wow there were times that this kind of thing coming from an IBM compatible was exciting and new ;)
Another Red Baron fan here - I used to play it on our POS Tandy and it was easily one of the best non-ASCII based games we had for it. I couldn't even find any info about it for years due to not knowing it's dubious(?) relation to the more well known Sopwith. Hearing those PC Speaker sounds again brings back such memories. :) I still prefer Striker but I love both equally for how ludicrously fun it is to fail at them. My favorite idiotic tactic is immediately flipping upside-down in the air then dropping a bomb.
Just watched an episode of MacGyver where someone is actually playing this Space Invaders clone thingy:D The Episode is called "Murderer's Sky" (Season 3)
I played a ton of Sopwith on my XT when i was a kid. Apparently it was popular enough for someone to make an open source remake - google for SDL Sopwith :-). Also the original code was released in 2000.
@phreakindee Ah, memories of loading 'Ghost Hunter' or 'Protector' into my Atari 8-Bit computers via cassette... That blurbling sound emanating from the TV speaker...
I wonder if there is any way to make a joystick work on this? Looks pretty fun. That Invaders game is very odd, I'd like to play that one and it looks like it would be made more fun with a bit of hacking on it
Well, back in the day, our attention spans were a tad different than they are now. When waiting for something to load, you would flip through the literature or step away to get a drink, etc. It was just the way it was.
"Red Baron" is actually a fantastic game, but it's called sopwith and can be seen here: /watch?v=qr1zxxEjw_w It's was really a great game for it's time and packed loads of fun into a simple setting. The space invaders clone is not too bad, the only thing that sucks about it is that you can only fire one shot at a time, which means if you miss whatever you're shooting at you have to wait for your ammo to exit the screen before you can shoot again.
@hydrolisk1792 Someone on facebook said to use a Genesis controller, and I can see that, using it through the ppt. All that would be needed is a driver, I think. If only I had room to set up my clone, I would test it argh!
@phreakindee Yeah, but you get used to that fairly quick. All you have to do is go all the way to one side(whrere the aliens haven't shifted to) and then all the way down to get behind the bases. When it comes to only having one shot, I can't remember the name of the game but you use it in the fire and ice intro and clearly you get more than one shot in that game, which is quite good. I think its called Round something. Anyway, the game is not so bad. It's better than all the spotsgames combined
Keypunch is that base on the term of how to had to keypunch paper to run your software , Thinking of that the new IBM CPU , can run all software and work old hardware letting you run over 40 years of software at 100% right speed , I wish we could get a home ver of that cpu!!!!! , it runs at over 5.5 not over clock , Banks are still using 1970`s tech at core in set area`s , IBM wants to make a product they would replace 1970`s stuff yet run the same software
This video has given me a new favourite LGR quote - "I'm speaking as words come to my mouth" =D

endrightwinglunacy Glad to hear it :)
And yeah, they have been my least-popular by far. Shame, I enjoyed making these!

Oh....my....god......I remember playing that Red Baron on my Dad's 5150! Soooo want a 5150 now.

Holy crap. I remember playing Red Baron on XTs in junior high typing class. This was well into the 90s. School didn't have much of a budget.
Had some Keypunch games for Apple II back in the day. Some were pretty fun. I remember D-Day was good.

This reminds me of a two day session last Christmas burning then playing every 3DO game ever. Felt so dirty afterward but was kinda fun.
I loved that Red Baron game. I had this or something very similar back in the late 80's when I had an 8088 PC clone. This and Ancient Art of War got a lot of play from me back then :)

Man, I couldn’t stop laughing! The beginning of invaders made me roll on the ground! Awesome episode!
Edit: and then qbert :)

I remember playing Sopwith which I think was a downloadable freeware clone/port of Red Baron that had the same kind of CGA graphics.
@TehUberCyberBeast I actually subscribe to collie. He's a cool dude, if a bit random, but that's what makes him and his Inept Reviews what they are.
Sopwith for sure... Red Baron....Played that a lot actually.... wow there were times that this kind of thing coming from an IBM compatible was exciting and new ;)

Never knew Sopwith was called Red Baron too.
Isn't backslash on the left side of z in every keyboard?
You should do more random PC disk gameplay Its pretty interesting to see what kind of cool stuff there is.
I remember playing Invaders on my XT back in the day as a kid. :)
best review ever, you can actually here him lose his mind XD

Oh, I've gotten the feel of my stick alright.

it's so funny game. but you can still continue omg you are great
I think I actually tried that Space Invaders game once
Woops. I thought keypunch meant punching on 80-column Hollerith cards.
The space invaders one reminds me as if you made it Space Invaders + Gaplus
Such a broken mess. XD
Well, at least "Invaders" seemed somewhat decent...
I love this video!
Yeah. A few years later, you would have the slow 14.4k dial-up modems. Click on the download for DOOM, eat lunch, and come back to find it done.
"Red Baron" is actually a fantastic game, but it's called sopwith and can be seen here: /watch?v=qr1zxxEjw_w

the red baron game was awesome 2 player game
@ 7:18 ... That's exactly what time it was when you said it in the video. Freaky.
@hydrolisk1792 Someone on facebook said to use a Genesis controller, and I can see that, using it through the ppt. All that would be needed is a driver, I think. If only I had room to set up my clone, I would test it argh!
lol when you were playing red baron, it looked like the enemy was doing synchronized flying with you

@Ogma01 The commodore 64 had lousy load times.

That Space Invader game had potential, but seemed unfinished somehow.
oh crap theres more...
13:57 Z and X move left and right, I and U move up and...
OMG!!! i played a game that did look 100% like this , but you was a helicopter , can someone place tell me the name ,
@nathanallan1 Probably is. :)
