    @trophy242 I never meant for there to be any implication that this had anything to do with Wings of Fury. Just that the gameplay was inspired by it and other similar previous games such as Two Tigers.
    And you would be correct about this being a demo for STOS if this were that game, but it's not. You're thinking of SkyStrike. This is SkyStrike Plus, which is a more involved, full-featured game released as a full game after the success of the demo. It still uses STOS, but it's not a simple demo.

    This was the first LGR video I watched in my search for good Atari ST games.
    seems like so long ago.
    Still great.
    Thank you Clint

    My friend was a tester for the game back in the late 80's. Awesome.

    Just for the record, this was available at retail. I bought it in the UK at a local retailer when it first came out commercially. I'll see if I can dig up the box!

    the detail in this game was amazing, bombing stuff was brilliant, the explosions were detailed, the damge effects seemed amazing, landing the damaged plane added a real element of "stress" to my 10 year old existance - even better than Wings of Fury and The Island of Dr. Destructo, which were the other two classic 2d plane games that held my attention for many years

    @UKRetroGames Other than the controls this one is rock-solid. It's very challenging but I can't help but love it.
    The ST review will definitely be fun. As for when I don't know, but it's on the way for sure. And even a direct comparison of the Amiga vs ST? Just maybe, if I dare.

    @Danfilm007 I have a FAQ video that shows how I record all my footage. For this one I just used a USB composite video capture device on my PC.

    @kad3t JetStrike is friggin' awesome, for sure! But I gotta say, after playing them both quite a bit, my vote goes to SkyStrike. It's simpler and less involved and has a lot more humor and odd little quirks that really make it amazing (to me)

    @fkobbe It would be nice, but TH-cam has repeatedly turned me down. They say I don't have full rights to my video content, which is bogus.

    Nice job. You reviewed this game nicely and made me want to try Skystrike out.
    This game reminds me Finnish proud Triplane Turmoil. Oh boy I had fun with that game when I was a kid.

    Great stuff. The Atari ST was the system I grew up with as a kid so I love seeing people review games from my childhood system. For another game like this, I highly recommend an old public domain game called 'Fokker Wolf'.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @CaptainRufus Yup, emulation is terribly simple, especially when compared to the Amiga. And also yes, there are several games for Flash and iOS that are quite similar to this and the Wings of Fury "genre"

  • @LGR
    @LGR  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @wakkyvideogroup It's a decent effort, but I probably expected too much. It brought on a good bit of nostalgia and they got the speed pretty right on. But it's a huge "maybe" as to if it's worth the money. Sonic doesn't look right and it can feel a bit off at times, dunno if it's the controls or what. Honestly, I enjoyed the recent "Sonic Fan Remix" a lot more. Totally worth trying the demo though, it's not all bad.

    I spent so many hours on this game - you could fly under that bridge near the base with a wing dip, can't recall getting much past the missions to bomb trucks and a carrier :-D simple but addictive!

    Oh man, I remember this! One of my favourite games on the PS4 is VERY similar (Rogue Aces) and is likewise stupidly good fun.

    • @polantom
      @polantom 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rogue Aces is very similar indeed, both in gameplay and the general vibe. I loved Skystrike back in the day and played it endlessly, so Rogue aces was right up my alley. I suppose they're both descendants of games like Biplanes on the Combat cartridge on the Atari 2600 which I also loved.

    Great review! It's hard to believe that this game was coded in basic. You mentioned that you had heard of the Fothergills. It's a name that rings a few bells for me too, but I can't remember where from.

    I remember a game similar to this on my old sony ericsson feature phone in the mid 2000s called bluetooth biplanes. it was pretty fucking amazing, since it had the ability to pair up with another phone and play wireless multiplayer. pretty remarkable stuff at the time, and probably the most fun I've ever had on a phone game of any sort

    This game looks like a lot of fun! One benefit of STs in the emulation realm is its EASY to use even if Amigas were pretty much superior. Ive got a Retro Gamer Magazine CDROM with a Windows emu and a couple games like Fire and Ice and it is dirt easy to get going, which you sadly cannot say for the Amiga. Next time I get some free gametime (so backlogged!) I might take a look for this thing. I think Rocksolid Arcade has a WW1 game similar to this in flash too...

  • @BdR76

    It looks pretty cool considering the time it came out, I think the creators looked at the old PC game "Sopwith" when they made this.
    Also, there is this much newer game "Altitude" for pc which is essentially a online deathmatch with 2D planes. Kind of like this, except no destroyable background, too bad..

  • @Trusteft

    I am surprised I never saw this video of yours before.
    Yeah I remember Skystrike (not the plus version). I had lots of fun playing it and wishing it was just a bit better in some parts. More than that though I wished other flight games had more elements of this. (outside of flight sims which I already knew). This didn't happen again till I got to play the (IMO) superior game of ATF II th-cam.com/video/o82Wb62vFSY/w-d-xo.html
    Of course it is not a fair comparison as the team behind ATF II was probably larger and they didn't use STOS.
    The use of STOS to create Skystrike is IMO a fantastic example of what could be done with that software.

    looks like my comment on the amiga 500 review is now kinda pointless (which was that I would look for an atari ST deal for you) but I guess I don't need to.
    I still want you to review the ST though.

  • @1xWertzui

    This game reminds me of a similar DOS game with a helicopter in very simplistic CGA graphics, there were a few missions in the shareware version, and you could also destroy the enviroment like here. I don't remember the title.

    Anybody remember an old dos game with 3d graphics where you control some sort of a ship or a car-like machine through the city, and capture criminals, but then you had to interrogate them, and there was a time limit, so you needed to know what questions to ask, or smth like that? :) If i'm not mistaken, ih had "Cloud" in its name... hmm

    @phreakindee Not very into the dog-fight genre, but that game reeks of great gameplay!
    Yeah, how about that Sonic Fan Remix, huh?! Man what a good taster that was ^_^ Not perfect by any means, but you can tell that the team is heading in the right direction with this one. I was just amazed by how much detail they've put into those levels!
    As for Sonic 4; Not for me.

    I have this in the loft with my 520STE(?). Quick question to anyone that knows, my cousin had an Amiga mid 90's and there was a similar game to this but im pretty sure you had a bigger selection of aircraft and the ability to use bouncing bomb ala dambusters. Anyone know of this game or did i have an over active imagination as a kid lol? Also im looking for abandonware for SkyStrike and am yet to find any, anyone got any links?
