2:34 Port Authority of Allegheny County (Pittsburgh), 53 million ridership. What makes their system so great is that they have three expressways exclusively for buses that lead out of the Central Business District to the east, west and south. That is in addition to bus-only lanes on streets shared with other vehicles. And, a tunnel under a mountain that is shared exclusively with Light Rail trains.
All this in a medium-sized city.

Pittsburgh is medium sized to you? I guess I live in a cave. My hometown in Virginia has 4,000 residents. You can drive the main streets in a circle in like less than 15 minutes. We have four red lights, two post offices, and one high school. Nearest big city is 500 mile drive. We consider going to Walmart a road trip because we have to drive to the ends of the county to get there. Memphis TN was the biggest city I lived in. You would think a city with a metro population of 800,000 would have half decent bus service. But instead, I think they have one of the worst bus services. Major routes don't start running until 5am and stop at midnight. That's Monday through Saturday. Smaller ones start at 8am to 6pm on weekdays, but not weekends, although some do on Saturday like 830am-5pm. On Sundays, major routes run 9am-5pm. They only run to a few of the suburbs but not all of them. If you don't have a car, you're screwed in that city. They don't have light rail, subways, or commuter trains ether, except for Amtrak.

San Francisco is my favorite public transportation city! The buses are amazing! So frequent! The constant high frequency is almost shocking!! It’s like heaven for me because I love public transportation. Unfortunately the trains can be a little frustrating. BART is usually okay, although I wish they would run every 8 minutes instead of every 15 minutes. Muni Metro is really frustrating. The market street subway gets delayed at least 2-3 times per day. One time I was going inbound and we usually stopped about 4 times between stations. Also, it takes about 60 seconds for trains to go from street mode to auto mode, which drives me nuts.

Despite so many opinions, the fact is that the NYC system is FAR better than any other, objectively. They offer the most options, a single ride pay system with free transfers, including to/from the subway, express service options, touchless payment, a solid app, time notifications at stops, and more coverage than any other. They cover 5 counties and even have some services that go through NJ between Manhattan and Staten Island, just because it’s quicker. They’re 100% accessible and have CNG, hybrid-electric and electric units in operation. Most have WiFi and USB chargers at all seats too.

I wonder which secondary bus agencies within major cities are at least equal or better than the main city’s/region’s transit agencies.
Madison County Transit, serving one very small corner northeast of St. Louis, seems to be the only one getting somewhat creative with their services compared with much of Metro’s fleet (Metro has bi-articulated buses running in certain denser St. Louis city neighborhoods but that’s it). While they don’t have BRT or bi-articulated buses, they clearly deliberately designed their bus routes to directly “plug into” a very sizable share of the county’s COMPREHENSIVE bike trail system (the better part of 150 miles of trails predominantly within the county; also maintained by MCT).
Also, their buses’ wheelbases are more comparable to larger SUVs/pickup trucks than average buses; more centered than at the very ends of the buses to which I wonder if that alone makes maneuvering, much less training new drivers easier than with other bus fleets…

So far I'd have to say that MUNI is the best and then AC Transit is the second best of the Bay Area. Then TriMet up in Portland and although I've never rode on the King County Metro buses while visiting Seattle I must say however that KCM and the other connecting transit agencies are very busy anf the run hecka decent too. The great thing was that I got a chance to still bus fan in Seattle and had a great time doing it too :D

(called the Link) The fair is $2.50 includes transfer. They have a senior and disability half price or free card available for those that qualify. They run on diesel.
