      McMaster, or Amazon should have them. I found magnets for much cheaper on Amazon.

      The magnets are great. Initially, the price was a little steep, but I found them for much less later on. Thank you 🙏

    Great project, thanks for sharing. Can you by chance remember the specs for the magnet you used? The magnetic force of it is usually measured in KG (the weight it can hold), or even the weight of the magnet itself would be useful. I am thinking of making one myself but don't want to over or under do it.

    This was awesome! I am looking at making something similar myself. Did you have any problems with the whole thing falling over when you tried to pull a knife off in the kitchen?

    • @fritz-the-jovial
      @fritz-the-jovial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point! With heaver German chef knives I have to be some what careful pulling it off, either by torquing the blade edge away from the block or pulling it up to release from the grip of the magnets. Over all not a problem, especially for thinner Japanese blades.

    I only question whether you needed so many magnets. It looks like you could get by with magnets only at the upper portion since the knives all sit near the top of the block. Other than that, GREAT WORK! I loved the simplicity of making it. Thanks for sharing.

      The number of magnets is a good suggestion, and I would say a requirement if it’s supposed to hold the knife securely. The price of the magnets, I found for drastically cheaper, so you can do this project for less than 20 bucks.

    Looks great. Safety note: Don’t use gloves on a table saw! Seems counterintuitive, but it makes chances of injury much higher. Video is well put together. Overall, great work.

    Two comments from a woodworker of (too)many years experience.
    It looked to me like the dado in the separate block pieces (the channel in which the magnets sit) was made in one pass on the router table. That is much too much material to remove in one pass. If it was just the way the video editing showed it, then I apologise - but others Amy see what I saw and try to replicate that. The safe way to go is to raise the router bit so that you take off in depth less than one half of the router diameter. Clearly, if you don’t have a router bit as wide as the channel you want to make, you adjust the fence position. But don’t take off too much in any rioting operation. It will take longer than one pass but if you have seen the result of timber jumping or a router bit flying across the workshop, believe me, that extra minute is worth it. Always use a router bit with as wide a diameter shank as you can. I try to use 12mm or 12.7mm whenever I can because the additional stability and strength is worth it.
    The second point is less important as it’s not safety oriented. It would be to slide the magnets into position before you glue the blocks together. Any issues with fit can be resolved at this stage as well as seeing that you are happy with the grip of the knife through the wood onto the magnet.
    I’m certainly not disparaging this clip but if you can’t learn from 40 plus years of experience, then you are not fit to carry on. On that case, go and be a politician - they make the same mistakes all the time
