The greatest performance of the greatest song ever written.

The guitar at 3:40 or so is absolutely amazing. Bruce knew how to make it scream the pain he was conveying. Masterpiece of a song.

For the record: he had actually already recorded Drive all night at this point. The version that was released on The river was recorded during the Darkness sessions in 1977.

no one does what they do. mythic story brought to whole-hearted, full-throated expression; the lyrics elegant, literary, devastating

One of my biggest regrets is that I not so long ago sold my bootleg "Live in Winterland" (original version, Vicky Vinyl). Bought in 1980, played it so many times in the basement where I grew up.

Sorry, but while this version has its great moments, it's still a distant 3rd place in Greatest Live "Backstreets" of all time, behind #2 Jacksonville, FLA 3/4/77: th-cam.com/video/T5zcvl1HocA/w-d-xo.html ...and still undefeated champion, Passaic, NJ 9/19/78: th-cam.com/video/11uFGAHM9io/w-d-xo.html

I'm not going to disagree, except to say that experiencing "Backstreets," with the "Drive All Night," interlude, for the first time makes it very special. For me, that was the Fox Theater in Atlanta on September 30, 1978. I became so caught up in the interlude that I lost track of "Backstreets." When he paused, for about 7 or 8 seconds at the end, I was in shock. Then, "Hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets,...," 24, 25, 26? times. I simply couldn't believe how good he was - as I've said elsewhere, the greatest performance art I've ever seen. I also was at this first Winterland show, and it's a great version, but that element of surprise was missing. We all can only see Bruce Springsteen the first time, once. Of course, that first show might be an off-night. Maybe he just phones it in. Except, Arlen, you and I know there are no off-nights. Bruce plays *every* show like it's his last.

@@CPSJSMSUUMUGA I saw the Darkness show in June a few weeks after the release of the album and I, just like you, lost track during the Sad Eyes interlude that he and the band was performing Back Streets.

Yuk!!! Over done! I felt like my ankle was being twisted in a bad wrestling match. Uncle already! Just repeats and sounds like a strangled goose!
