Have you played with the idea of starting a nonprofit or NGO? Now that you've watched this, what do you think?

Thanks for providing another alternative for folks wanting to do mission driven work, Eva! And there are not many differences between NGOs and businesses at the root; both need money to run! This was an interesting perspective. Great video!

Thanks, Gabby! This is the conversation I have over and over with social workers, so I thought I'd make a video about it. There was so much more I wanted to say (like the point you made about both needing money to run), but I didn't want to be taking forever. LOL. Definitely not the only perspective, but one I stand by. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great video!!! However as a former 20 year plus attorney in the field I can tell you there is a number of states in the United States that will allow you to be a SINGLE PERSON nonprofit. Massachusetts, Delaware, and California just to name a few states. The IRS has no official requirements for the number of board members that you need to have to be a tax-exempt organization. Nonprofits have a clear advantage over for-profit companies when it comes to TAXES and STATE FEES. In California, there is a minimum of an $800.00 annual tax for corporations and LLCs. Also, it is easier to raise capital as a nonprofit. Nonprofits can sell ( taxable and nontaxable) bonds when they can generate revenue from a project. Also, nonprofits don't pay sales taxes and in most cases don't pay real estate taxes or federal unemployment taxes. Being semi-retired my wife and I run a nonprofit that has a $1.5 million dollar contract from the federal government. Also in some states, you get charitable immunity that protects the nonprofit from lawsuits. I would recommend you take a business course at an accreditated institution prior to making videos in this subject matter area.

Wayne!!! Where were you when I was doing my research? Lol. Is there anything I said you would endorse?
Interested to know how you came across this video.

@@RichSocialWorker The statements I agreed with 🤣? Your statement on external judgments of nonprofits is VERY TRUE. State Attorney Generals get calls ALL the time about shady activity, usually about organizations that do NOT have the proper paperwork to be soliciting in their state. How did I find your channel? I received a link from a law student that was doing research for a class that I teach on nonprofits. As a final NOTE, it is very EASY to start a nonprofit organization please see forms 1023(EZ) and form 990N. The number of directors you will NEED will depend on state law. You can always incorporate in a state like MA, DE, NV, or CA and then incorporate in your home state as a foreign corporation IF your state requires more than 1 director. The fees are not that expensive and there are very few basic rules for a small nonprofit organization. I would consult a website like NOLO for help.

@@waynecmontgomery Appreciate you sharing the knowledge. Hopefully it will be helpful to many. However, my message is specifically for my audience who is largely made up of impact-driven social workers with dreams of running big, multi-service organizations.
They want to build a nonprofit that makes a real contribution, not one that just exists for a tax advantage only. They're unaware of the slog to build clout and raise capital alongside their already demanding jobs/lives. That's why I was very careful to articulate who I was talking to and what I was asking them to consider.
My audience comes to this channel for alternatives to traditional social work paths, specifically when it comes to earning income beyond typical social work salaries and creating the time freedom they desire for self care. For others viewers like your law student (thanks for the share!) and my later-careered audience members, I'd be happy to refer them to your channel to hear more about the technicalities of how they can go about setting up an impact-driven nonprofit.
Also, my former accredited university business instructor says she loved it!
