I was a teenager when S & G put this out. I am now 66 years old and this version gives me the chills. The song creates both joy and sorrow when this group sings it. I immediately broke into tears upon hearing this. BRAVO
My most vivid memory of this song was that my 9th grade English teacher played it for us in class and then asked us to write a short essay about it. She came around the room and critiqued what we were writing. I remember her asking me to try again because some of the words I used were wrong for the sounds of silence. It was a difficult assignment but one that really made us think about what we were writing, particularly for young students just beginning to write essays. I don't remember now what I wrote but do remember being somewhat frustrated in trying to get it right. Nevertheless it made a big impression such that hearing this song always takes me back to that experience in creative writing.
Kirstin is the young lady's name and is to me the most underrated singer in the group...but she shows her stuff in this video...as did everyone else... Matt Sallee finally gets to show the naysayers why he is in the group and why Ben Bram the arranger (with the team as a whole of course) producer and co-founder of the group championed him to get his position in the group.
You're wrong! Kirstin WAS the most underrated! Now she isn't. Did you see the comments in every Ptx video? Or people who react to them? They always talk about her! And the comments in every video are about how Kirstin's range is amazing and how she has grown a lot since Broadway! She is a star now!! Yes, she was underrated, but now she isn't anymore. And i'm so glad for that! She deserves all the attention in the world! Ps: She is my favorite, and i love her.
@@xxcris20xx I am talking historically getting deserved credit here has enhanced her position with the masses. But some of us have always considered her a worthy peer of Scott and Mitch and were not surprised at all and she has always been my favorite.
@PentaholicSPN FAMILYPotter Head Exactly. I always see a lot of people talking about Kirstin and Mitch (my two favorites) and most of them don't talk about Scott and sometimes when he gets the lead people complain about that and start hating on him. Out of the five Kirstin WAS the most underrated a lot of years ago but now I can say she is one of the most overrated member (as she should) and Kevin in my opinion is the most underrated since ever. Out of the trio it's definitely Scott. He always gets most parts of the lead but people always forget to talk about him.
@PentaholicSPN FAMILYPotter Head have you noticed how they are pitching their songs for the base voicings? He's a lower baritone not a bass so they are having to pitch the song differently for his voice. It's the most wonderful and nice thing i've seen a group of people do for another artist.
The whole group is the best for being a group. Each and every one of them is very well rated. Kevin is the most talented with singing, beat-box and cello-playing Scott has one of the most range of all of them Kirstin can belt without screaming or forcing her voice with a beautiful pitch like no one else Mitch voice is the most unique with people still debating if he is a high tenor or a countertenor Matt still have much much more to show us what he can bring to the table Avi was the most bass to ever bass. He's not in the band anymore, but I still love him
Scott takes over the bass line when Avi or Matt takes the lead. You can see him do it in live performances. Also Scott singing I Should Tell Ya Momma on Ya shows his bass off. That would be great for you to react to as he does the bass and lead at the same time lol. Love your reactions!!
@@lifeofadancer9397 I mentioned Avi as he is the original bass and in the repitoire of PTX's music there are times when Scott takes the bass from Avi when Avi has the lead. Yes. Each one is so talented, but together it becomes magic! Matt (white jacket) has finally stepped out of Avi's shadow, and came into his own in this one.
From left to right, they're Matt, Kirstin, Scott, Mitch, and Kevin. Matt usually sings their rhythm bass line and Kevin is the vocal percussionist, although Matt also sometimes harmonizes or sings the melody, and Kevin also sometimes harmonizes, sings the melody, and on occasion plays the cello (usually while beatboxing or singing). Matt and Scott's ranges overlap really nicely, Scott's overlaps with Mitch and Kirstie's, and Mitch and Kirstie have very similar ranges. Kevin has an interesting vocal range. He can hit very low notes when beatboxing, but can also sing very high in falsetto. They're enough to make any of us feel like underachievers, I think. It seems like everyone in the group has at least a 4 octave vocal range, and they're all very good singers. Sorry for the recap if you already knew that and just forgot their names while you were listening. That has to be easy to do when you listen to so many different artists. I really loved Matt's solo in this one, and the key change right afterwards when Kirstie took over the lead. Using the background harmony to switch keys sounded incredible.
@PstScrpt Avi used to coach Kevin in singing when they were roommates early in the group's history. He had the innate talent/ability, just not the confidence and techniques.
I've been following PTX since the beginning and bloody hell I'm still discovering them because they renew themselves so creatively. Scott's vocal fry at the beginning was just magic. Love to watch you Rebecca .
i get that feeling too, it's like the music just envelops you completely. what i love about them is that none are better than the other, they're all equal in the talent they bring and the personal flair they bring to the table. they compliment each other so well. for your notes, scott is the tall blonde guy, mitch is the shorter guy that sings high, kirstie is the woman, kevin is the beatboxer, and matt is the bass.
That feeling when you’re shivering all over with goosebumps and your body all squeezes together. I feel like I might implode when the music is so beautiful and overwhelming.
BRILLIANT!!!!! I couldn't help but cry. I actually emitted a sob like a small child when they have tired from crying. I don’t know why, but every time I hear a new song from this group, I feel it right in my soul and it makes me cry. They just have so much talent and so much passion. It’s so moving.
I agree, a stunning rendition, but the tonal differences dont capture the sorrow, hopelessness and anger that I feel the song is meant to convey... in which department David/Disturbed captured the emotions for me perfectly
@@MrRychu001 I think she was saying one of Pentatonix best covers, not the best cover of Sound of Silence, which I think most will agree is still Draiman's (IMO better than the original)

Kirstie is the one that makes this group, in my opinion. They are all very talented, but Kirstie's voice just grills my burger! I've loved her voice since they did "Little Drummer Boy".
I remember the original Simon and Garfunkel song. But take a look at the Disturbed cover. POWERFUL! The rendition actually sends the message even better in my mind.
I just found your channel yesterday and I have to tell you that the emotional honesty in your reaction to this song is a true joy to watch. My own reaction was much the same. They pull you in and throw you around in the undertow of their delivery, stubbornly refusing to let you up for air until every last note is absorbed into your spirit. Exquisite!
Pentatonix made it big very quickly for several reasons (probably really too many to list here). First, before the group was ever formed, each member was GREAT at what they did to begin with. Second, each of them continuously improve on that greatness! OF COURSE people love their sound, I cannot help but love it myself! I was sad (just like any other fan) when Avi left, but I do understand the reasons. The group DID manage to find someone worthy to fill the void though! Matt is just as GREAT at this as Avi! :)
Great reaction as always Rebecca. Many songs make us want to move, melody, rhythm, it's what they bring to a song isn't it? All the best and have a great week all.

You can hear both Simon & Garfunkel and Disturbed influencing their cover. Pentatonix, once again introducing a new iteration of this juggernaut of emotion and sound and lyrics. The only other cover that has been as emotionally charged for me is this cover from Germany! When they first released this video and saw it, I was literally thinking "I hope RVA reviews this soon." I love how much you love music. In regards to "Singing Tourette's", you're not alone.
Does foot-tapping and eventually singing along with it without noticing while wearing headphones until you start getting funny looks from the people around you count? When I was a kid, I was so bad about the "singing while wearing headphones" bit that my little sister actually snuck in and recorded me so I'd be embarrassed enough to stop. It didn't work.

I love, love ,love the fact that you listen to the songs you react to as SEPARATE entities. And realize that every cover brings it's own unique feel. Almost all the laymen reacting immediately compare it to other versions and rate it accordingly. Even some of the professionals do the same thing. You are special. Thank you for that.
I love the emotions you display on these fabulous covers. I believe you actually feel it deep within your core, hence, goosebumps, like I get myself on such perfection, as this group has.
Scott- one in middle Mitch- the one beside him on the right Kevin- the one beside Mitch on the far right Kirstie- Left of Scott Matt- far left Hope this helps!
This is one of my favorite songs and Pentatonix did a fabulous job with it! I totally get where you were at with it. I move around to music like that too.
My 4 favorite songs they have done in order of favorite. 1. Sound of silence 2. Radioactive 3. Rose gold 4. New years day This is my favorite cover of this song it used to be disturbed but now this took it.
Five world class vocalists singing in perfect harmony. A single singer - regardless if it’s Celine Dion or Tom Jones, well they can’t compare. Five voices is just so powerful.
Loved your energy and I love your reaction videos all together and the names in order of how they were standing in the video was Matt on the far left then kirstin then Scott then Mitch then Kevin
Yes Rebecca we understand completely what you are talking about when you say that their songs make you want to sing or dance! Pentatonix has been one of my favorite a cappella groups for a long time. Their song arrangements and harmonies are some of the best I have heard. You could react to just about any of their songs and find something unique and interesting in them. Songs like "Say Something" and "Run to You" that they have done are also very emotive. Loved your reaction to this performance!
Yes, I feel the same thing, Rebecca!! How can anyone NOT move or be moved when hearing Pentatonix sing this song!! Love it and your reaction!! Scott and Mitch also just released a new song & video on 2/14. Please react to them: SUPERFRUIT “The Promise” cover originally by When In Rome. It features Gold Medalist ice skater Adam Rippon in the video and its awesome!! ♥️
This is one of those songs or vocal arrangements that gives me repeated chills, and it's the middle of summer here! Many of The Greatest Showman songs did the same for me and yes, RVA, I completely agree with you! It's hard not to sing along or move my body when I connect with music like this. I also get quite excited every time Kirstie uses her lower range because I used to sing alto in choirs and love those parts!
OH MY GOD I HEARD THAT SONG YESTERDAY!!! (m.a.s.t.e.r.p.i.e.c.e., seriously tho it's amazing and it gives me shivers...I just can't stop listening to it: it's hipnotizing and I completly agree with you because I just sing&dance it everywhere and I always have old ladies who look at me like "She maad?" 😂) I really was going to ask you in a comment under your last video to make a reaction and I saw the notificaton😍😍😍 Love u and love Pentatonix❤
I love pentatonix their hallelujah is my favourite version. I do love disturbed's version of this & zombie. They all hit me right in the soul amazing unbelievable feeling Add 8d audio to it with earphones in all these songs & omg transported
Pentatonix is not just a group, its a musical phenomenon happening to a group of friends together that not only love music but sound experimentation and discovery. They know there own limits and capacities. They study and practice all the different aspect of vibration, tempo, and especially the good use of silence on the perfect spot to enhance the sound. And until they keep their vision of share a talent beyond just make a song they will be on the top of any chart permanently.
There's no denying the power of this spectacular performance. Even my fat old self was trying to move to it (unsuccessfully, I must say). However, I wonder if this particular song isn't a good candidate for "less is more". The lyrics here are even more powerful than the melody. And so, the lyrics should get the emphasis, IMHO. To me, that means that a stripped down version of the song would be more meaningful ... and probably more moving, as well. Perhaps a single singer singing with a single instrument in an otherwise quiet room would be best? Of course, that's just my opinion. But hey, it's also probably the best opinion. Right? Oooh ... I can hardly wait for the response. Also, I nominate Matt as the single singer for the solo version. I was thrilled with his voice. I had no clue. But, don't hold that against me. I'll bet you didn't either. Any of you. Ha.
I agree that it's too much, but I also think the sound they chose is misplaced as it's too happy and upbeat for a song that's about sadness and frustration over how people become increasingly more disconnected. I think they chose to do this song because it's become popular again, rather than wanting to do the song for what it is and says.
I side with Rebecca on this one. Simon and Garfunkel ALREADY did what you are describing. If that is the only way you can enjoy this song. It's been out there for 50 years, just waiting for you to hear it again. Pentatonix has the ability to shoot that wave effect that Rebecca so strongly emphasized. It would be a waste of their ability not to arrange and sing it EXACTLY the way they did. The are Pentatonix. Not Simon and Garfunkel 2.0.
Scott blew me away on this one with the low voice. I love the version that Disturbed did and this one equally well. They are both just soooooo well done!!! PTX always gives me chills!!! You NNNNEEEEEEDDDDD to watch Superfruit sing The Promise!!!! Please? It’s fantastic!!!! #neverstopsinging #ptx #alwayskeepfighting
In their cover of Hallelujah, Scott sings the first verse while Avi sings the bass, then Avi sings the second verse while Scott seamlessly takes over the bass (which goes just as low as he does here). I can never quite hear the switch in the bass line. So impressive.
Fan since like 2012, but for almost a year nothing they did was... how to express it... resonating with me. It has nothing to do about Avi leaving, but with the songs and arrangements choices. This is the PTX I fell in love with. And I'm SO glad they are back. Though Home Free (and sometimes VoicePlay) was my only optimal choice. Btw, maybe you would like to react (if you didn't already) to Home Free's "Man of constant sorrow". It has some instrumental tricks.
It is one of the best songs in the wrong I can confirm that, I'm *THE* authority for classifying the best songs. I have heard the most monotone people in the world, slowly read the lyrics and it was still stunning.
I love this song in general, but I am OBSESSED with this version! I absolutely love what Pentatonix has done with this song and I cannot stop dancing to it. It really just causes you to move your body, involuntarily, at a deep, instinctive level. The harmonies are superb, the arrangement is gripping, and the emotion they invest in their performance is palpable. Did I say that I am OBSESSED with this cover? Officially. Blown. Over...🌬️

It is! I love all renditions. Original I love so dearly
@@rva A perk to one of many things about you on Patreon.
Oh yes my lovely patties 💛♥️
I love, love ,love the fact that you listen to the songs you react to as SEPARATE entities. And realize that every cover brings it's own unique feel. Almost all the laymen reacting immediately compare it to other versions and rate it accordingly. Even some of the professionals do the same thing. You are special. Thank you for that.
I love the emotions you display on these fabulous covers. I believe you actually feel it deep within your core, hence, goosebumps, like I get myself on such perfection, as this group has.
from the moment the video came out, I've been waiting for this reaction😍😍😍😍😍
Scott- one in middle
Mitch- the one beside him on the right
Kevin- the one beside Mitch on the far right
Kirstie- Left of Scott
Matt- far left
Hope this helps!
This is one of my favorite songs and Pentatonix did a fabulous job with it! I totally get where you were at with it. I move around to music like that too.
I always cry when I hear this, and I sing along. It evokes such joy but also its so haunting, I am so moved by this song and its amazing arrangement.
You should react to aha! Live by pentatonix it's such a great performance!

2. Radioactive
3. Rose gold
4. New years day
This is my favorite cover of this song it used to be disturbed but now this took it.
Home Free - “Man of Constant Sorrow” ...... Thank me later
How Great Thou Art.
I think she already has done that one
Yuh
Check the bass when Matt sings. That's Scott as swell.
Wow! I listen to this song everyday...and I’m just as awestruck each time I listen. Powerful to say the least
Wow - it was, as always, very cool! Rebecca thanks!
Just need this so much before I say goodbye to my fur baby. Music genuinely soothes the soul xx❤️
♥️
in the music video, their names are (in order from left to right) Matt, Kirstin, Scott, Mitch, and Kevin
LOVE!!❤❤❤
These young people are amazing! I love seeing such complicated songs with voice only! Amazing!
🤣🤣♥️💛🔥
I love pentatonix their hallelujah is my favourite version.

@@KellyanneKashaS OMG so true....I almost cried the first time I heard it❤ Unfortunately my headphones broke so...😭
@@rva listen to henk poort with this song for floor jansen in the show beste zangers mayby better than simon and garfunkel
You're not a weirdo! I felt it too. Im right there with you. Amazing group!!
AMAZZZING!! Pure GOLD I always get goosebumps when they sing.
Wow! An epic cover! Love your reaction..
Ooo yessss love always💜💜💜💜 loving the earings
Pentatonix is not just a group, its a musical phenomenon happening to a group of friends together that not only love music but sound experimentation and discovery. They know there own limits and capacities. They study and practice all the different aspect of vibration, tempo, and especially the good use of silence on the perfect spot to enhance the sound. And until they keep their vision of share a talent beyond just make a song they will be on the top of any chart permanently.
Oh yeah, shivers like crazy EVERY TIME I listen to this song!!!
Any of you. Ha.
You are right. It's overcooked.
I feel the same, the song is lost in the arrangement.
@@Evil_Peter Exactly, well said.
Thank you for doing this. It's one of their best. and that's saying something.
...sounds so freaking amazing!!! 💕💕💕💕
I love watching you reacting to great music , emotional music. You get totally engrossed . I love your passion.
Wow. I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN, REBECCA. The amazing sounds FILL MY SOUL and I wanna cry. Okay, I DO cry. *sob* Pure love.
Yes, Rebecca! We understand completely what you're talking about! ❤️❤️❤️
So much emotion felt through all of their music.
Yes Rebecca !!! We understand completely what you're talking about, and I'm glad you brought that up with that !!!!!!!!
It is one of the best songs in the wrong I can confirm that, I'm *THE* authority for classifying the best songs. I have heard the most monotone people in the world, slowly read the lyrics and it was still stunning.
You’re always so interesting ! Looove u ❤️
i relate to your reactions so much, you're amazing!
Officially. Blown. Over...🌬️
Kirstin, Matt and Scott 😍😍
What about my boys Mitch and Kevin come on
I love when Rebecca lets go and just vibes with the song.
Glad to know I am not the only one so moved by this performance.
