    As warmer temperatures hit the Pacific Northwest and the dirt starts to dry, I’m always eager to get out on some long rides with some big climbs. Naturally, when this Trek Fuel EX 9.9 showed up at the Freehub office, I knew it was time to put the nimble beast through its paces. I challenged myself to a 60-mile sufferfest on some of Bellingham, Washington’s toughest climbs and descents. It definitely didn’t let me down.

    What a review! That's how mountain bikes should be reviewed! Keep it up! FYI: my 2017 Fuel EX Project ONE frame is getting warranty replaced and I'm hoping I get something like you tested in this video. The only thing I don't stay away from is those loud hubs....it's just a personal thing, but can't stand loud hubs.

    Great review. Intrigued by those tires for my new Slash for the rare days of fairer weather here in Bellingham. Also, wouldn’t it be hot if Trek offered this bike with a piggyback rear shock to go with the burly fork, brakes, and aggressive geo a la Norco Optic and Stumpy EVO?

    After watching your Switchblade review it seems like the EX rides relatively similar. Can you comment on why someone would pick the Switchblade over the Fuel EX at the 9.7 level and above. I'm comparing the Fuel EX 9.7 to the Switchblade XT Race build. I know there is about $1200 difference there but I'm really looking for a comparison on the frame and the bigger travel of the Switchblade vs the smaller travel of the Fuel. Your review stated how both liked to get into the air and both felt poppy. That's what I'm looking for but what I can't seem to suss out is if the Switchblade is less plush than the Fuel.
    Thanks and I think we'd all like to see a review of the Ibis Ripmo V2 as it competes with these bikes.
    Cheers,
    Sean

    • @johnsospencer

      The trek definitely felt longer and maybe more plush with those big balloon tires. The pivot is better for pumping through rollers and better in the corners with those maxxis tires. They both climb amazing. You can’t go wrong with either.

      That bike would have paid for more than 4 years of college when I went back in the day - the days when higher education was heavily subsidized by state and federal taxes due to corporations being adequately taxed. Now corporations skate free and actually blackmail states by demanding endless tax dodges or else they’ll threaten to move to a state more conducive to their bribes. Or “better yet” move major operations to China.

    Does no one ride slow, technical trails where you need to pedal and/or ratchet your way along, up, down anymore, in general and for sure in reviews? Seems all you ever hear is about how a bike climbs and descends on the fast and flowy stuff, never about slow speed tech, so sad.

    • @MaxMustermannnnnn
      @MaxMustermannnnnn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a 2018 Fuel EX and on really gnarly terrain (which I normally ride on my DH Bike) it had not enough travel 😂😂😂 Its perfect for flowtrails und easy singletrails. On harder singletrails it has enough travel till it gets fast. Mine climbed ok but my Megatower is surprinsingly the way better climbing bike.

    • @johnsospencer
      @johnsospencer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @skibum1976
      @skibum1976 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lynx G yes I know what you are talking about. Problem that I see with “modern” geo is that when the reach gets longer and the HTA slacker it generally means the wheelbase is longer as well. Makes the bike more stable on trails like in this vid, but more of a pita on tight technical slow speed stuff where ya gotta ratchet the cranks. That said I’ve not seen any vid reviews that showcase this kind of terrain. It’s a bit sad, but I understand that speed, like sex, sells.

    Pathetic. A trail bike with a carbon frame that cost a mere couple-hundred to produce the carbon. The overly-rated components made of cheap material, with a 800% mark-up in sale-price. Basically a rig for the rich, shameful, and weight-weenies. My 2 years at SUNY Geneseo, cost less.
