    God, I do love Germany and something like this only makes me love it more! I realise that these clubs (especially Dortmund) are now "global brands" to a certain extent, but the way they actively interact with their fans and seem to balance being big businesses whilst rooted in their communities is really impressive. Being able to negotiate ticket prices directly with the club?? That's very cool.
    The points made in the film about standing sections and being able to drink in the grounds are also important as these elements really do add to the raucous and fun atmosphere at German games. I've been to a good few Bundesliga games over the last 5 years or so and every one of them has been an absolute pleasure to behold. I really hope I can taste the Revierderby one of these days!

      Well it's a different setup genius. Their clubs are associations English clubs are just clubs ultras have no say in how clubs are run as most European clubs were part of a bigger centralised structure that included other sports such as volleyball and chess if which you had a member.
      English clubs were born out of something more organic and stretch back to the mid 1800s. A few people managing a crowd of thousands wouldn't work in England because fans would just do their own thing.

    Supported Watford for 30+ years home and away but working in Berlin currently and watching FC Union Berlin few weeks back versus the League leaders was a genuine eye opener.
    Ticket price, free transport, terracing, atmosphere and people happily drinking or smoking without any hassle - incredible.
    The Germans have got football right, very envious of them because in England, especially the Premier League, it's soul has been ripped out with hardly a murmur from the people who once made it what it was.
    Oh, and because of some new friends, Schalke every time out of these two :-)

    As a Newcastle United fan under the never ending rule of Mike Ashley, i wish that our fan base could come together and retake our club and fans have their own stakes in the club much in the way these two are set up.
    British football at the minute is all about the money with owners not giving a fuck about the fans only their profits, fan ownership is a way to retake control and make it about the football again

    There are teams in the second tier of German league that have more attendance then some teams in Englands premier league . I think that's crazy and shows Germany has some of best fans in football.

  • @georgekirk2744
    @georgekirk2744 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I respect the way Germans go about their football. Low ticket prices and all that. The reason it doesn't work in England anymore is because of the hooligan outrage in the 60s/70s and 80s. The government worked to make football more commercial, especially in the premier league.
    But what I can't stand is how most people from other countries only see the premier league clubs- many have lost their atmosphere as they've become commercialized. Most English football clubs have great atmosphere, foreign football fans need to realise that they will find the best atmosphere in lower tier football. Most matches at Millwall the crowd are really hyped and the atmosphere is buzzing and intimidating in some parts

    Der Grund für die Rivalität ist, dass S04 und der BVB die gleiche Geschichte haben und sich sehr ähnlich sind. Sowohl die Clubs, als auch die Menschen. Beides Arbeiterklasseclubs ursprünglich, die heute der Stolz ihrer jeweiligen Stadt sind. Schalke hat mehr Tradition durch die Mythosbegründung in den 40ern und 70ern und Dortmund derzeit mehr Erfolg. Ein Gelsenkirchener, der in Dortmund lebt.
    The reason for the rivalry is the same background and history of Schalke und Borussia. Both clubs and people, which live in the relative towns. Both Clubs are very similar and starts as working class Clubs. Today they are the (only) pride of their towns after decline of the industry in the Revier after the 80s. Schalke got more Tradition with the titles in 40s and a succesfull team in the 70s, and Dortmund got more sucess today. A Gelsenkirchener, who lives today in Dortmund

      That changed in the 70ths / 80ths many Dortmund Supporters study and Dortmund also gets a right side hooligan scene.
      At Schalke There are many normal workers in this years and also Immigrants from italy , spain and even some turkish people. Also in this years Schalke have one of the most brutal hooligan group in West germany and There is one of the reasons of this rivlery between Schalke and Dortmund (and a Bad immage of Schalke that exist maybe today a Bit Like Millwall)

    I'm a Sunderland fan and this really reminds me of Sunderland v Newcastle. An area of England that has blighted with the closure of mines and shipping industries. Football is life in the North East. You ask every single person in the North East who they support and 99.9% will say Sunderland or Newcastle, even if they aren't hugely interested.

    The best part of those derby games are when the fans suddenly start to agree with each other....you have those two groups proclaiming eternal hate for each other and then the Steigerlied plays and suddenly they are singing together. And then the ticker shows that someone scored against the Bayern and they are all cheering together.

      Nach den Eskalationen in den letzten Jahren/Jahrzehnten ist es ruhiger ums Derby geworden, das stimmt. Ich glaube beide Fanlager wissen, dass sie sich nicht mehr viel erlauben können, sonst macht der DFB und die DFL ihre Drohungen wahr von personalisierten Tickets und ähnlichem. Bundesliga-Vereine stehen einfach mehr im Fokus als "unterklassige Clubs" (soll keine Abwertung sein, ich habe großen Respekt vor nahezu jedem Club). Trotzdem ist die Aufmerksamkeit bei uns einfach größer. Egal ob nun von Seiten der Polizei, der Presse oder sogar der Politik, die sich erstaunlicherweise sehr oft einmischt.
      Vielleicht lag es auch daran, dass in den letzten Jahren der direkte Konkurrenzkampf ausgeblieben ist. Dortmund war ja oft ein paar Tabellenplätze weiter weg.
      Erst das letzte Derby mit dem 4:4 hatte wieder richtig Power und Emotionen. Obwohl ich mit dem Ergebnis nicht zufrieden bin, fand ich, es war das spannendste und atmosphärischte Derby der letzten Jahre. Fand es irgendwie Schade, dass die Schalker Fans in der Pause alle gegangen sind. Sonst wäre das wirklich ein Hexenkessel gewesen.
      Bei all dem Hass muss man einfach anerkennen: Ohne den anderen machts auch irgendwie keinen Spaß, und dann würde es auch kein Derby mehr geben. :)

I'm a big fan of this series and I think it would be really beneficial if you covered, not only the more 'high profile' derbies but also derbies like Nottingham Forest vs Derby or Leicester and Blackpool vs Preston (these are the best I could think of in the same leagues at the moment but next season you could potentially cover derbies like Swindon vs Oxford or Steel City Derby, what I'm suggesting is basically, some lower profile, lower league derbies!

    That's the biggest problem with English football, the atmosphere has completely dissapated. It's like people are watching a fucking opera. Emirates and the swamp are the worst. FA regulations don't help. I was blessed to be around the time of the Kippax for a couple of years at maine road; Now that was a bloody crowd! Hopefully this trend changes soon.
    Oh and Eli! Sort your hair out mate!

    • @kopking5
      @kopking5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Spot on mate, atmosphere in England for so many games is poor these days, so many real fans are priced out, on the kop for so many games this season, there are day trippers who don't even know most of the songs, and are to busy on there phones taking pics, not even watching the game at times, god knows where they get there tickets from. Its got to the point where away games are far more fun, and that should not be the case. Things will only get worse if clubs don't stop taking the piss with the cost of tickets/season tickets.

    • @101publicenemy
      @101publicenemy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bajan KopKing ***** It's completely frustrating, look at how much Arsenal are charging for match day tickets -£126 ludicrous. It used to be, you worked 9-5 from monday to friday with the game on the weekend being your reward, but a lot of these guys are getting priced out and instead you get knobs in suits who have no passion for the game and are there taking photos. What needs to happen is the F.A need to allow safe standing zones and allow alcohol back into the stand in some areas. The bundesliga is doing this and there haven't been any major problems so far.Mind you, i still get chills when i hear YNWA ring out from the Anfield terraces ;)

    • @101publicenemy
      @101publicenemy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pat don to be fair the swamp and the emirates have a reputation for having no atmosphere due to the tourists, a reputatiom they certainly live up to. Etihad isn't great and its definitely a disappointment when compared to Maine road, the atmosphere at every ground seems to be poor, but Trafford and the Emirates are two places with exceptionally poor atmospheres. It's nothing personal, its just an observation, you can take it how you like, though i will say you've attempted to change this through singing sections. To bad you lot haven't had much to sing about recently ;)

    • @101publicenemy
      @101publicenemy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      unfortunately that's true, and the FA can't be bothered getting off their arses and doing anything about it. Lowering ticket prices and Re introducing standing areas and Alcohol areas should be a start.

    • @kopking5
      @kopking5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      101publicenemy I have found the Emirates not to bad to be fair, but I have only been twice and both were eve/night games, 1 in league the other in champ league. Old Trafford for the amount in the ground is a joke, tourist or tourist , they been banging on about how good they were against us lol what a load of shite, first half was you could hear a pin drop from there lot, other than singing the odd song about Stevie G( they obsessed with him) and singing you scouse bastard every 5 min, bit harsh that we thought, Rooney their best player hahah. In general its all about lower ticket prices, so the real fans can go the game together, and be able to sit together, that's why away fans make so much more noise these days.

    German fans are passionate and loyal like hell and probably the best in the world along with latin fans. They create an amazing and intense atmosphere. English “fans” - mainly the Premier League fans are turists. No atmosphere from the stands and what’s even worse about english fans..... they only support their club when they’re winning. When trailing, the stands are completely silent or... they leave early. That never happens in The Bundesliga.

      I think a Roses derby day would be better to show with Leeds and Man United. The Mancs Derby is littered with plastics on both sides, but with the Whites and Reds, only the true ones from Leeds and true ones from Manchester are involved. We may be in the championship but there will still be extra police in London because Leeds and Man U are playing in the same city 1 day apart, that’s how much it the rivalry still exists.
