5 years of edh & ive realized:
1.) players have a hard time keeping decks casual and self governing power level, especially if they come from playing modern.
2.) edh is intended to be casual and ppl can have a precon at the least as an option, yet try to hide behind rule zero as a cop out to pubstomp/disrespect others time with miserable decks.
3.) rule zero is basically a non rule, and leads to either no discussion beforehand or confusion/frustration when discussing power level or things like proxies, silver borders, etc.
4.) if you dont have a playgroup and you go to pickup games at the lgs, then its difficult to have a good experience due to rule zero.
Not having clear guidelines as to what is expected in casual edh, among the things listed above, means that pods will be more often uneven and is beyond overwhelming for new players. Imagine you buy a precon and go to edh for the first time and not one person has a precon or low powered deck to play with……cedh is not the default and the RC needs to do something for a change instead of hiding behind “you can just make the rules from now on and no we wont ban dockside”
Would never play with randoms for these exact reasons. Everyone at the store is a try-hard and winning is more important to them than anything, so they'll go out of their way to make everyone else miserable as long as they win. Not to mention that most commander players call their deck "casual" while it contains 400$ of "staple lands" and mana rocks lmfao.
1.) there is no such thing as governing power level, its a stupid concept
2.) edh is intended to be played however someone wants to play, you dont get to choose how people play the game. people built as powerful decks as they could back when edh started
3.) no shit its a non rule, its not a real rule, its for morons who cry about how others choose to have fun
4.) stop playing magic if you dont like playing magic

If you're going to put silver borders in EDH, regulate them with their own banlist, IE no "Tear this card to pieces" effects like on Blacker Lotus and Chaos Confetti.

I've wanted to build coalition victory in a 60card for my casual playgroup for a long time now; but because we play mostly 4 or 5-way games, we generally look at commander bans for cards not to use or focus on because they're usually more tuned for multiplayer games. Coalition victory would be TOO easy in a 60card lol, especially now that we have Leyline of the Guildpact, so I spare them, but it makes me sad
22:50 The orb in the artwork of 4th edition Dungeon Master Guide is actually a scrying ball. If you look inside there are some heroes that are being scryed upon.
I love it because if you look at the Player's Handbook cover of 4th edition, it's the exact same image depicted in the scrying ball.
Looking at the two covers side by side, you get a scene of heroic people exploring a dungeon, but then you zoom out and see the scheming villain (the red dragon) spying on them and Pondering about how to dispatch these oblivious mortals.

Scalpers really are a plague to humanity at least as far as entertainment and hobbies.
I personally don't mind having an outside framework to allow silver border cards that are reasonable to be played. Its a rule as another option that will have zero impact at most tables. There are quite a few cards that are reasonable. For example look at Target Minotaur. It is a 2/1 Minotaur with Prowess for 1R and that's it. That could very well be put in a normal set and it frankly wouldn't be that good. Its perfectly fine to play but not allowed because its silver bordered.
Easy solution to the silver boarder cards is to make a Masters set of reprinted Un cards as black boarder. Then say Any card reprinted in that set is legal

That's literally the point, WOTC wants to play the whole "We marked it as not legal for constructed play" but totally want players to get confused and think they are legal so they will want those cards. They don't care how much bad feels it creates for the players.

They're tricking new players into bringing the cards to the table, and the experienced players now either have to police the game and feel like gatekeeping a-holes, or allow unfun cards into their game and have a worse play experience.

Play a yoink-copy-rip deck with silver border cards against them, specifically focusing them.
Yoink their permanents, bonuspoints if you go for non-permanents as well, turn them into copies of Blacker Lotus (or other tear apart cards) and then use them as their new text intends.
THEY want to play silver borders, so play silver borders.
Half the cards in Unfinity were mislabeled, resulting in acorn cards that should have been legal, and legal cards that should have been acorn stamped. 🤪

I love monster manual! Fun fact thats an actual 3 dimensional "book" that higgenbothom made, hes a sculptor and did most of the cover arts for d&ds books of that era as well as cathodian claws of gix voltaic key and worn powerstone (all of which were sculpted items)! I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2004 at worlds where he was sculpting 5 full size (about 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall) versions of the mana dork myr cycle, really nice guy and i have a video I made of that trip showing his and many others artwork, and I still have my hat I wore with his signature as well as signatures from chris rush (and a neat custom lotus!) scott fisher anthony waters and sheshiro ookubo! It was a magical trip!

Never mind this leaves me with zero (heh) expectations for if my $1000 deck will be playable at a new LGS, either because it's too weak or too strong for the table. Lord forbid you're playing online where rule 0 is nonexistent and you just have to guess if that Kenrith deck is chair tribal or cEDH. 10% of the entire banlist emerged just from cards printed during the 2020 window where everyone HAD to play online and it exposed how "just rule 0" doesn't work.
@engiopdf8745 I only play with my playgroup, which, I realize more and more, is definitely a good call.
However, the banlist makes sense to me. I don't agree with all bans, others would maybe be necessary, but overall, it makes sense to me, so I thought they knew what they were doing.
To extend an olive branch to them, working with assholes like Hasbro, while serving them as a shield, must be exhausting and, hence, must impair their decision-making greatly.

This means that you can have all the lock pieces, land destruction, and board wipes you want, BUT if I can't do anything anymore, your next step should be to end my misery quickly. If you can't by default, no Strip Mine or Jokullhaups for you.

I never understood the point of the "commander's committee" at all. If commander isn't sanctioned and "rule zero" exists as a concept, and they even say you should use rule zero. Why give anything they say anymore weight than anything your play group decides. I've been playing a few silver boarded cards here and there for over a decade now. Not a ton of stuff or anything that would annoy players by making them have to do the hokey pokey or get me a soda or whatever, just stuff like Super Secret Tech or Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug. But I mean if my opponent wants to play Hurloon Wrangler or whatever, sure why not. I mean in the same vein, if you wanna listen to the committee, sure you do you. I just still don't get why people care about them. Like if you don't like their choices, don't listen. You literally don't have to.

At first I was upset that they made faithless looting one of them. Then I realized they can very easily unban faithless looting, based on the cards that they've been bringing out with the modern horizons sets
First of all, I'm a huge fan of silver bordered cards. Second, without a few exceptions nowadays the power level of silver card is on par or lower than the power surged cards they've been pumping into the format.
As someone building a Breya Contraptions deck, I'm fully on board with un-cards being more widely accepted in EDH. The format was never intended to be some ultra competative slogfest. I mean, i remember playing back in highschool in '06 and it was always jank vs jank. Those guys thought the original un-cards were hilarious and spiced things up.

You don't need to, using one of the my little pony legends (don't know the name, but it's yellow I think), which let's you put toys on the battlefield as tokens that have abilities reflected by the toy's characteristics. Just play all 5 pieces of exodia as tokens, then play Claire D'Loon from the unfinity set to turn all tokens into cards for the rest of the game an finish it off by playing any card that will put all 5 exodia pieces into your hand. Thus you can play Exodia to win the game using mtg cards.

@@Enja_Near No you don't, Exodia has never had an errata within MTG so it already does what it says it does. Although what it says it does is "you win the duel", but there's no such thing as a duel in MTG, so you can't win it - and you couldn't with R&D's secret lair either.
Back in the day I took part in an un-draft with my friends. There was a foil Entirely Normal Armchair that made it around the draft rotation a few times, so I decided to pick it up, knowing everyone would know I had it and would never be able to use it effectively.
I've carried this card in my most played commander deck ever since with hopes I could legitimately use it... everyone laughs when I try, but I never get the actually benefit of destroying an attacking creature.
Part of me supports this, but the confusion is too deep... very complex issue.
Entirely Normal Armchair is hugely broken in commander. You can put it onto the battlefield for free, triggering any ETB triggers, then make a deal with an opponent to bounce it so you can play it again.
I'm glad you mentioned laughing hyena first, that is my most hated un-card...and I love the un-sets. But whenever that card hit the table, the game stopped being fun.

I think it’s been 3 years since a card was banned so 3 x 6 = 18 sets and not ONE SINGLE CARD in all those sets wasn’t deemed problematic? What about Thassa Oracle shenanigans? 2 card 3-4 drop I win combo is ridiculous. But no, that’s fine. Let’s bring even MORE cards into the format.

There are cards in Un- sets, like Giant Fan, that are perfectly functional without being silly. They ability simply moves counters around. We already have several other cards that do something like that, so seeing a Giant Fan hit the board shouldn't be an issue.
Blacker Lotus? No silver bordered cards in the format, period.
Lots of cards that are pefectly functional and I think that's the idea, just that the cards do something we haven't seen before and they want to test it with a silver border first.

Its easier to rule 0 something into a game then to convince people things shouldnt be allowed per a rule 0 discussion. For fun or otherwise like genuinely its so much healthier to just keep silver border cards not legal formally.
I understand this is just a template to help rule 0 discussion but yeah. Mind ya'll im in the boat that i see all the d6 dice rolling cards /killbots from unstable are pretty much aline with modern mtg and served as playtest cards for the mechanic of rolling dice. That being said i still think its a rule 0 discussion to allow use of them , if we just let all the silver border stuff in theres too much to nitpick what is fun for everyone and what isn't itd just become awkward.
Overall i dont enjoy silver border cards personally and dont find the majority of them to be fun. They often are awkward or time consuming and theres a time and place for them , i dont think that place is the format currently keeping mtg relavent. I dont mind the formentioned dice rolling if its tame , i also dont mind custom rule 0 commanders if they seem well thought out and interesting. All of that is for sure a rule 0 discussion to add to a game with a pod whos down and won't feel uncomfy with it.
Yep. If something isn't allowed but is allowable, someone who wants to play it will generally bring two decks or bring replacements so that they can still play if someone says they'd rather they didn't use that. If something is allowed but shouldn't be, you're going to get a lot of players showing up with just one deck, only finding tables that would rather they don't use it, and then going home sulking. Keeping unpopular cards not legal but rule zero-able helps people communicate.

Silly mechanics, art, and flavor text were a fun way to celebrate Magic draft. Now that *every* set has silly mechanics, art, and flavor text the appeal is a lot less.
One of the monetary draws to buy into un sets were rare full-art basic lands. Now *every* set has full-art lands.

I was drooling over the Astarion SL, lamenting how it will probably sell out before I get it and then I remember I own all of these cards and can literally just print off the artwork and slip it in front a basic land.
The Monster Manual art is actually from 3rd edition cover. I started with that!

Earl of Squirrels ability is identical to Lathril: Create token based on damage dealt. At this point that card would be normal.
The Fourth Edition card is the cover of the 4E DMG. You can't see it too well in the card but, the Orb in the 4E card is an Orb of Scrying. The Dragon is using the orb to scry on the adventurers. The image within the orb is from the cover of the 4e Players Handbook.
Correct if I'm wrong but also seems like could a set up to re-evaluating a portion of the ban list. Think about it like this. If They can set up the silver border card a break them in a way that sense they can then go back and break down the ban list and since people will already understand the way they are breaking it down. It will be much easier for the community to come to a consensus on a new ban list.

There are some silver border cards I wouldn't mind see available in Commander. I guess they could just make a list of the cards that are allowed from those sets effectively banning the rest.

I’m totally down for silver to be legal. Brings commander closer to the reason it was originally built, for fun goofy shenanigans. Gets it closer to its kitchen table roots.

i'm not against those certain "un" cards being legal for play, i just wish WotC would do a proper reprinting of those cards so there's a proper "Definitely legal for play" version to reference. And i keep hoping they'll ban Nadu and i've given up on them banning Thassa's Oracle.
Wonder if they're going to do "Print to demand" like they did before, otherwise, this entire secret lair (just like the others) are just for scalpers.
I have mixed feelings about silver being legal in any capacity in Commander. There are lots of Silver Boarder Cards that I would like to use in my decks, but also some that I wouldn't want in the format whatsoever because it would just be so confusing.

This is actually amazing. Commander was supposed to be casual and you're more likely to have fun playing against it than playing against an alchemy player using crap like Caldera Breaker in brawl or conjuring the power nine out of his a$$...
I was cool with the legal unfinity cards. (I love cut in half but hate stickers.) I dont understand why they couldnt just make the acorn cards silver borders for at glance understanding.

Got to be honest with the expanded universe secret lair thing the silver bordered becoming legal in commander is nothing to me. Oh there is this tv show about zombies that I don't know or care about it's magic now. *shrug* checked out on that drama long time ago.
Silver bordered cards are not a problem unless they break the rules of the game. there are many cards of the Un-sets that could be perfectly played in EDH, I do that in some of my decks. Like, for example, Earl of Squirrel. Yes squirrellink is a weird named keyword, but the card makes complete sense in the game.
I love the idea of this tier system and how uncomplicated it is so why cant cards be banned as commander or as companion again?

There are quite a lot of silver cards that are ok for commander though wizards should reprint them in black border to diminish confusion.

They already took it over when they realised they could start printing into commander. For example, I keep seeing Nadu decks where previously I would see a greater range of commanders. That feels pretty WOTC-dominated to me.
Commander was never meant to be anything other than casual.
I figure silver boarder isn’t any more terrible than universes beyond in many ways.
Imagine focusing your entire market around Commander...then instantly ruining it with a dumb rule.
My opinion is that they are looking at Un stuff now because they are thinking about adding the Alchemy cards in the future.
Quebec players pretty much all converted to commander... It shifted card value locally.

isn't commander mostly a friendly play format? so use whatever rules/mods your play group agrees to, and if they don't allow proxies then get some new friends that don't have their heads up their arses
If you're the butthurt over not being able to play proxies instead of just using budget alternatives, then your friends should ditch you and find new friends.

I'll be honest, a lot of modern card design makes Silver-bordered cards look tame. Don't get me started on the Universes Beyond stuff...
Why not put this effort in card legality into black border cards? So many cards that should be banned / unbanned that are just left to rot

I remember I made an Ol' Buzzbark contraption commander deck back when it was legal for that month and kept it together for a while afterwards. Had some fun waky games with it but took it apart because i didn't feel like rolling all those dice anymore.
silver boarder Hydra doodle is a fun card, no reason to ban it, you have to pump mana into it and make it a split so put 10 in and splits into 5 off and 5 def. plus its a dice roll.

I mean since you used it as an example, I just don't see why people are so upset at the potential of something like Earl of Squirrel being made actually legal. It's like people hear Un and only think of dexterity and gotcha cards when stuff like dice rolling cards are totally indistinguishable from modern dice rolling cards.
