Thanks for watching, I appreciate it. Unfortunately, I no longer have these synths, they were on loan from Yamaha. If I end up getting the Montage in again will see what I can find out about that.
Great lesson, clear and understandable. Helped me better understand MODX workflow. Question, upon first recording of a compositional loop, how should I delete the first attempt if unsatisfied. 1st attempt was 3 min and I need to redo the whole thing but shorter. So overdub leaves a portion.
Thanks for watching! I no longer have this keyboard and it has been a while since I tried it. If I recall I thought there was a delete or undo option within the sequencer.
This was actually very helpful. I'm using the Montage Connect VST in my Cubase 10.5 Pro and was looking to sync with songs created in the Montage. Only downside, unless you export your song as WAV from Montage to the PC, you can't mirror the sounds recorded in the Montage as general midi maps to the closest VST instrument defined in your DAW, so the sounds will not be as clear and concise in Cubase as recorded on the Montage. Let me know if this is incorrect. Thanks!
Thanks I've been struggling with the choice of the MODX vs Roland's FA and I was wondering exactly how the recording feature worked on the MODX. It seems like the looping would work fine for my application. I kept coming back to the Modx to see if someone would show it. Great Video again thanks.
i have both keyboards - the MODX is geared to live performances. the FA is geared towards recording/making your own music. if you want the best of both - get a yamaha MOTIF XF
Thank you for this helpful tip. I am a pre-modx8 user only because I'm still waiting for that sorry up a to get my music work station to me di to their service failure, AGAIN. Wasn't my choice for that delivery service.
Thank u for this video.. Very helpful... Plz make more tutorial on how to sequence multiple tracks with arpeggios and parts by this method.. Independently from a pc
Most likely record the audio into your daw, there is probably an export function but I haven't used one of these in years so I don't recall. I generally just record my audio directly in realtime to whatever I'm using (daw, sampler, etc)
I learned quite a few things from that video thank you very much! so essentially you have 16 tracks on the looper/song recorder but can only use up to 8 sounds (single part performances) or even less if you use multi-parts? that kinda sucks, because If I wanna use a couple of sounds that have 4 parts each (like a piano+ep+string+bell layered) I'm deeply limited to only 4 more :/
Thanks for watching! Yeah, you have 16 sounds/tracks. So you can have up to 16 sounds (parts). The 8 part limit is for key splits and layers, you can have more than 8 parts in the performance though, up to 16 :)
Good stuff man. The lack of traditional sequencer is a daily annoyance and I'm wondering how to get round this. Do you know if I can use a sequencer like the Beatstep Pro to feed MIDI into the Montage, say a complex drum part? Also, in order to edit MIDI data stored on the MODX, do I manually have to export it to a PC via USB stick, or can I mount the Montage as a discoverable drive on the PC and live-edit the MIDI files that way, without the need for transfer? Thanks in advance.
I haven't really tried it with external sequencers but it should work, you can set it up to be triggered via MIDI, don't think there is any live MIDI editing but may be something in place with the plugin/transfer app. I honestly never really used it in that way as I tend to work with audio mostly so I just record sounds out of my synths/boards into the MPC, Maschine, or whatever I'm using.
Thanks for the video. had my montage 2 days. Is there any way to have the recorded instruments follow chord changes if you wanna play along to it? I guess you could almost say arranger style. I know the Montage has some preset drum patterns with base backgrounds which you can do this with. Just struggling to find any instructions how to do this to create my own drum pattern and base patterns which i can play along to. Or am i asking too much of the Montage and should of stuck to an Arranger Keyboard. Thanks
Can you make a demo video on the MODX showing how to to create a song step by step using the scenes, style parts, drums, bass, etc,, arps, rhythms, patterns sequencer, etc?
Brilliant video.. thanks, im new to my ModX8 but.. i read that using the hardware sequencer on the ModX (os.252) or Montage (os.3) you only have access to the first 8 tracks, to get the 16 tracks, you need to use a outboard Midi Sequencer or connect to a DAW.. is that right?
Hi there , thanx for the video. Its a great video to start. But I m stuck with one problem. How do i delete a particular track i recorded in a song . Everytime i select the track and set the record to replace. All the tracks get replaced.TQ
So with, Replace and overdub, in song mode I can't replace a part later on if I feel it needs it. I'd have to start over with the entire song to fix that one part I don't like? I have to rely on "Undo"?
It's been a while since I used the sequencer on this, they updated it to more of a pattern based workflow now, so you could probably just delete the track/part you want to redo.
Yo, you answered key questions I’ve been wondering about as well as using in conjunction with my mpc. Appreciate that!! If you getta a chance, really need a video on how to pull up I think it’s xoa files fro my Yamaha motif Xf8 keyboard into my montage via jump drive. That would be awesome bro. All my files doesn’t pull up from the usb stick and if I try to load a specific song, it takes forever. I was told by guitar center that it could pull up the same way. Can’t figure out. Help!!🎶
great video Joe, you are the first to explain modx sequencing multitracking...I know you can load samples but is it possible to load a general midi files already done on another synthesizer?. keep up the good work
Thanks for watching! I believe you can load midi files, this isn't something I tried directly but I recall reading it somewhere either in the manual or when looking at how their plugin works. It should be able to load midi but I no longer have it so I can't check.
I know you don’t have this board any longer but is there a way to delete the two tracks/part remnants of that romantic strings you had. When you switched to the solo violin part, I would want to delete the extra parts that were left. How do I do that?
Hi After doing all these, how do you save it on the keyboard and how would can you use it with songs especially if what you have done is drums/rhythm pattern that you may need for a performance and also play along? Thanks
@@SoundsAndGear Thanks bro, Yamaha just produced a complex keyboard, very tough to handle. I think psr s970 might be much more easier to use. What type of keyboard are you using now? Is it better than MODX? Thanks
@@ayotundeolubiyi Just depends on what you're looking for. I don't have a workstation currently, mainly use a few synths, my iPad, Rhodes, and a few plugins.
m excited for the modx and plan to get one. But that sequencer seems more cumbersome and restirictive than the motif xf sequencer that I'm used to. Will xf users make an easy transition to montage wrt the sequencer?
They recently updated the sequencer, checkout my recent video where I show how it compares to the new Fantom. Overall, it isn't exactly like the Motif (as it wasn't designed to replace the Motif originally)
Thanks its helpful, but...When I follow all your steps and I want to "rec" a new track I don't get the option of "overdub" I only get replace?. I have the newest OS 3.0 any ideas?
with 2.o which upgrades the SEQ for the MODX, can I edit a measure ? Lets say in measure 4 , on the flute track, I realize I made a mistake, call it a bad note, or off time. Can I erase that single measure, go into over dub, and re-record my measure 4 on the flute track ? I want to use MODX standalone for my SEQ
From what I can tell, you can do that. It's not a piano roll but you can erase specific parts of a pattern/track or even just do a replace recording over that track. I haven't tried that specifically but it seems that you can do it.
very helpfull!!! that was what i was searching for. Can you seh how you do it with an DAW? I made so far only songs with daw and plugins, but now i want to buy this montage and i am unsure if this is the right one.
Thanks for watching! I did a video showing how it works with Logic. Though my workflow is really just recording audio to whatever daw or sampler I’m using.
@@SoundsAndGear thanks a lot for your answer. So if it records audio, than its like sampling and different from working with plugins, understand. Was in hope it works that the DAW would have access to the sounds of the keyboard so that its easy to load the complete project later again and edit it and see the notes. Thanks a lot!
You could trigger it via MIDI, but eventually, you're going to have to record the audio anyway, I just like going straight to audio, it's personal preference though, you can definitely use it as a MIDI sound module and just record the audio later once you have your song/sequence laid out like you want.
@@SoundsAndGear Thank you very much! Just a question because you know such hardware better than me. Do you know if there is a keyboard which lets me work as i described, so that the DAW has access to the soundmodules and the keyboard works as soundplugin for the DAW? Or is this only a dream i have and i have to change my routine to make songs in future if i want such a keyboard? :-)
@@tamgaming9861 I don't know of any that have a plugin (there are a few synths like Novation Ultranova and Virus TI) but you can use any keyboard in your daw via MIDI/Audio. You will always have to record the audio though at some point because it is an external device. Here's an article on using the Montage in that way www.yamahasynth.com/montage-category/montage-and-cubase-pro-9-workflow
Thanks for the video. Any question... You can quantize, for example: the flute, after the recording? or only quantize before recording? If you quantize after, could you tell me how?
So in Montage or Modx you can't create and edit a composition? Like the 16 tracks sequencer of Krome, Kronos etc? Montage allows you to create patterns only? And you must use a DAW for composing? 🤔
Love your channel. Have learned boatloads! I am using cubasis 2.7 and watched Dom's video on recording AUDIO in cubasis using the MODX but I'm getting no signal. Wondering what was the MODX set on? Stand alone or Audio to Daw? Dom said no set up was necessary and I followed his audio set up path in Cubasis 2.7 and I got NOTHIN'. Arrrrugh. Can you help me re: this? Using USB cable. Thanks!
When I tried it I don't remember having to setup anything specific, but maybe in the usb settings make sure audio is set to usb? I already sent these back to Yamaha unfortunately...and yes I miss them hahahaha.
@@SoundsAndGear Hey thanks for your swift reply! Aw man I bet you DO miss them! LOL! Update: The trick was to turn on permissions to use the MIC in Ipad for Cubasis. :D
Thanks again for your tutoring. Couple of questions: (1) After you record say 3 tracks is there a way to view all tracks or each one? (2) I’m also trying to record voice OVER music track. Mic is registering on screen but only records in the “audio” mode and only plays back in that mode. Do you know how to get voice over music tracks?
It's not setup like a traditional workstation, the sequencer is very basic, not sure if you can see all the tracks together or even record audio over like a song. I no longer have this so I can't check.
Got one more question? Even when I hit overdub, it doesn’t record onto the track I’m recording??? It records nothing additional to the original track I’m working on?
I no longer have this but I think it has to do with which track is in focus for recording, it's been a while since I tested this and honestly it wasn't something I used often at all.
Hey, thanks for responding back to my questions. Just got the Montage 8 and trying to navigate through system and get familiar. I think I got some of the track layering down? I think my problem did have to do with the “focus” option! Thanx for pointing that out! Much appreciated!!! -g
Great tutorial! Thanks Brother. So… can you record multiple of these loop performances or is it a scetch pad you can only use once then deleted next time you want to record ideas?
Hello, ..... I create a multi track midi file then I save to my usb as ‘save as midifile’. After I was trying to play the file but it not play as properly. What’s the reason
@@SoundsAndGear Thank you. one last question, can we program a full song on it and play? I'm asking for 2 reasons; [1] I bought a Tyros 5 without thinking much. thought it must be better than my Motif. But it turns out its not a workstation. Can't program n can't synthesize/ voice edit. [2] too many models which I don't know who is for! So if you could answer me AND suggest me something similar to Motif would be very thankful.[ ie; song mode/ performance mode and voice mode]. !! [ Maybe not possible in this New World !! ].
SoundsAndGear I used to own a workstation psr 2000. I would be able to record a full song beginning to end. intro verses hooks and ending. How can I do that with the montage? Fyi I’m trying to recreate the song “Look for me” by Tania Goodman for a close relatives funeral. Any info would help me a lot. Thanks
Awesome recording! I got a question? When I hit the record button again it doesn’t start a new recording? It just keeps adding recordings to the track??? Please help :)
Thanks for watching! Not sure what you mean but I think you need to change which track is in focus? Sorry I no longer have this synth so I can't test it.
@@SoundsAndGear Yo Thank you for the quick reply. PLEASE let me know how that sequencer is. It's crucial to me because I dont play keys and I only use a daw for recording. I'm old school with getting my patterns/sequences together to chain into song mode and then record them. Thanks man.
@@mpmi7588 Seems like a pretty straight forward pattern sequencer so far, set the loop, quantize on/off, and count in. Then you can just record as it loops. I haven't dug into all of the features yet. Also seems to have multiple scenes so you can lay out a general song arrangement using patterns.
I know you were recording in the midi tab, but can you record audio into the montage in the sequencer? If I want to hook up a bass guitar and record it in a sequence, can I do that?
When I record my first track/sound - it doesn’t give me the option to loop and add more tracks. Basically the squares where that option is supposed to be are empty. Can someone help plz!
hey! have you figured it out? I was wondering the same thing. I made a two bars recording and when I changed the performance it had the same sequence on it.
You never mentioned where it gets stored after I saved the song by selecting "Store song and performace setting". I just saved it and I have no idea how to retrieve what I saved. Where is it?
Great video - I have a quick question: when you export the midi or the audio from a multitracked song like that, do you get the parts as separate midi files or the audio as stems for each instrument?
I just got the Montage. Can anyone tell me how to make a change to just one track? If I have 16 tracks in a pattern and I want to redo part of the drum track, can i punch in or replace that one track without messing up the other 15 tracks? Or can I just delete one track and redo it for that pattern? Thanks!
I turned off keyboard control for the first sound and I put a new sound and when I play the first recording I have the second sound takes over the whole thing why is this?? Is it just my piano help me bc I’m so confused
I'm running a MODX from an MPC One, so it should be even easier on the X. Setting up some keyboard splits is easy on the MO, so you don't even need to use many tracks for the most part.
@@SoundsAndGear by chance could you possibly do a quick youtube video on setting that up or showing the workflow of using a mpc x/live/one sequencing parts of a modx/montage
@@MikeRP3147 Nah, I don't have the Montage anymore, plus, I'm really more of an audio fan, so I just record from whatever instrument into an audio track/loop, or sample.
Nah, I'm not exclusive to anything. I use the MPC most of the time, but I also use Maschine as a sound module, so it just depends on what I'm feeling. Not really using Ableton Live much for production at the moment, mainly for editing and sound design.

I no longer have this but I am not aware of any auto chord change options
Can you make a demo video on the MODX showing how to to create a song step by step using
the scenes, style parts, drums, bass, etc,, arps, rhythms, patterns sequencer, etc?
No, I don't have the MODX anymore.
TH-cam has a few videos on the subject but here is one that might help you.

Great video, thank you ;)
Hey bro! Thanks for watching man. I get this question quite a bit!
Thanks for watching. It has been a few years since I used this, I honestly don't remember as I didn't really use it as a sequencer in my workflow.
Hi there , thanx for the video. Its a great video to start. But I m stuck with one problem. How do i delete a particular track i recorded in a song . Everytime i select the track and set the record to replace. All the tracks get replaced.TQ
Thanks for watching. Sorry, but I no longer have this synth so I'm not sure.
Woow thanks man! Bought the modx8 recently and am trying to get my head around it. This video opened my eye to a lot of stuff I've been missing
Cool, glad to help, thanks for watching!
Help!!🎶
Thanks for watching! Glad this video helped. I no longer have a Montage in my setup.
Can i load patterns that i made in motif xs7 (with wave backing tracks in it) into the montage?
Not sure, never used an xs7 and no longer have the montage.
Well explained.
Thanks for watching
great video Joe, you are the first to explain modx sequencing multitracking...I know you can load samples but is it possible to load a general midi files already done on another synthesizer?. keep up the good work
Thanks for watching! I believe you can load midi files, this isn't something I tried directly but I recall reading it somewhere either in the manual or when looking at how their plugin works. It should be able to load midi but I no longer have it so I can't check.
thanks
This video is great can you save recordings to a usb stick?
I believe you can choose to save to a USB device
SoundsAndGear Thanks for responding bro
No problem
I know you don’t have this board any longer but is there a way to delete the two tracks/part remnants of that romantic strings you had. When you switched to the solo violin part, I would want to delete the extra parts that were left. How do I do that?
Not sure, you should be able to remove them from the performance but I do not remember how to do so.
Hi
After doing all these, how do you save it on the keyboard and how would can you use it with songs especially if what you have done is drums/rhythm pattern that you may need for a performance and also play along?
Thanks
Sorry, I no longer have this, I do not remember how to save on it.
@@SoundsAndGear
Thanks bro, Yamaha just produced a complex keyboard, very tough to handle.
@@SoundsAndGear ok thanks.

Thanks for the video. Is there a way to turn off the metronome beep sound that plays while you are recording?
Thanks for watching, I can't remember, no longer have this.
Does the Montage make you miss the SEQUENCER that was in the MOTIF XF
Nah, I record it into other stuff and don't use the sequencer at all.
Not missing it now!
OS 3.0 now (as of September) have a full sequencer. Go update your firmware and you’ll be all set. I did mine yesterday and it’s fantastic!
@@eddiemajour8481 Looking forward to checking out the new sequencer at some point!
Thanks its helpful, but...When I follow all your steps and I want to "rec" a new track I don't get the option of "overdub" I only get replace?. I have the newest OS 3.0 any ideas?
Not sure, you should be able to switch between the two.
Same here, please help anyone if you can
@@grinnerschic I wonder if it is because they added the pattern sequencer and that's where you do "overdub" type recording now?
@@SoundsAndGear Okay thanks for your help

Can you record full song using that recording sound?? How many sound can u record separately? Is it only 16 or can be more?
You could probably record a full song, I do not remember how many sounds you can record with, some sounds are layered, etc so it depends.
Amazing that it now has a Pattern Mode.
Yeah it's cool, still not quite there imo.
@@SoundsAndGear I enjoy the Pattern Mode on my MOXF. For now, I might stick with that.
@@seankalifut9948 Cool!
Hey @SoundsandGear, you wrote in a comment you no longer have the Montage. What do you have instead?
I don't have anything instead, just sent it back as it was a demo unit.
Hi.. This video was really helpful.. Can u record different scenes or. Parts as loops and them play them in a sequence like motif xf pattern mode?
There is no pattern mode in these, just a basic sequencer.
with 2.o which upgrades the SEQ for the MODX, can I edit a measure ? Lets say in measure 4 , on the flute track, I realize I made a mistake, call it a bad note, or off time.
Can I erase that single measure, go into over dub, and re-record my measure 4 on the flute track ? I want to use MODX standalone for my SEQ
From what I can tell, you can do that. It's not a piano roll but you can erase specific parts of a pattern/track or even just do a replace recording over that track. I haven't tried that specifically but it seems that you can do it.
How to add wave files (backing track) and send the klik to the drummer?
I don't know, probably check with Yamaha on that.
very helpfull!!! that was what i was searching for.
Excellent help thanks.. 🙂
No problem, thanks for watching!
What buttons do you press to set your looping time?
Been a while, I don’t remember
Thanks for the video. Any question... You can quantize, for example: the flute, after the recording? or only quantize before recording? If you quantize after, could you tell me how?
Thanks for watching, sorry I do not have this anymore so I'm not sure.
So in Montage or Modx you can't create and edit a composition? Like the 16 tracks sequencer of Krome, Kronos etc? Montage allows you to create patterns only? And you must use a DAW for composing? 🤔
It is a different setup than a kronos for sure, not sure how much it has changed since I tried it.
Hello thanks for great video. How do feel the MODX compares to the MOXF8? I’m deciding between the two.
I had a MOXF6 for a while, the MODX is a step up due to the new engine and the touchscreen I'd say personally.
No comparision. Modx is much better
It would be nice if yamaha came out with a sound module based on the modx line. The motif xs rack is long overdue for a upgrade/update
Oh yeah! I usually turn that on by default when I install an audio app so I didn't have to adjust it. Glad you got it going!
can the modx8 show you what chord your playing?
Not that I know of.

Great tutorial! Thanks Brother. So… can you record multiple of these loop performances or is it a scetch pad you can only use once then deleted next time you want to record ideas?

Did you mean that sequencer [ song mode] in in MOTIF is no longer available in MONTAGE?
They don't have the same exact sequencer, but the Montage has been updated since this video.
@@SoundsAndGear Thank you. one last question, can we program a full song on it and play?

@@SoundsAndGear thanks. will have a look.
Thanks for the video. Very informative. But How do I record a full song on the montage?
Not sure what you mean? You can build up your sequence over multiple tracks, but that's pretty much the extent of the sequencer.
SoundsAndGear I used to own a workstation psr 2000. I would be able to record a full song beginning to end. intro verses hooks and ending. How can I do that with the montage? @@mpmi7588 Seems like a pretty straight forward pattern sequencer so far, set the loop, quantize on/off, and count in. Then you can just record as it loops. I haven't dug into all of the features yet. Also seems to have multiple scenes so you can lay out a general song arrangement using patterns.
Dope! Thanks bro

I know you were recording in the midi tab, but can you record audio into the montage in the sequencer? If I want to hook up a bass guitar and record it in a sequence, can I do that?

You should be able to save the whole thing to an SD card, USB drive, etc.
When I record my first track/sound - it doesn’t give me the option to loop and add more tracks. Basically the squares where that option is supposed to be are empty. Can someone help plz!
They've updated the sequencer since this video, check their site for current workflows.
Is it possible to save the recorded sequence with the performance?
Or is the sequence a global separat thing?
I'm actually not sure, I think it is separate but I could be wrong. I know you can save it on it's own.
hey! have you figured it out? I was wondering the same thing. I made a two bars recording and when I changed the performance it had the same sequence on it.
