I'm so glad you did not fall. My husband was working fir a client, cleaning out their gutters.
He slipped and fell on his back on the ground. I was holding the camera videoing him. Now, to this day, he has a 8 inch rod and 12 screws in his back. 😢. Changed both our lives, and he aged at least 10 years.

As a former goat owner I feel impelled to let you know that your plans for an electric fence will not contain your goats. Goats are the Houdini of all livestalk and will quickly defeat an electric fence. It is my experience that the only way to contain them is with a welded wire fence at least 6 feet tall. Also goats are not the brightest animals in the barnyard. They will quickly entangle their leads around anything within their reach. Be prepared to constantly be untangling them. Putting them on a lead sounds like a good idea at first, but you will soon regret it. I don’t mean to be a negative Nancy owning goats is a delightful endeavor that has many rewards but you must first be able to contain them in order to keep them safe. Given that you have 41.36 acres you have some leeway before they get out to the street but beware they eat everything! Nothing is sacred they will clean out your garden in record time and they are equally fond of ornamental plants.and don’t worry about the myth that rhodendrens are poisonous for goats. Our goats completely inialated my rhodendrens and suffered no consciquences. All that said I hope you truly enjoy your new goats as they add a whole new layer if happiness to the barnyard.

One of the delights at the agricultural shows in Zimbabwe is seeing the plastic, iron and all manor of non fecal goat droppings. They literally eat anything, and are seemingly able to keep from harms way whilst doing this. I’ve never heard of goats being kept on a lead, however they seem pretty smart in not straying too far from the general area where they are supposed to be although they fail to recognise a fence as a boundary.

The goats are in electric fencing already since birth. The ones the 41.36 are getting haven’t escaped yet, but one of the mothers and another baby goat has figured it out. But they do stick around and mow for groceries.

My dad had some goats, and learned quickly like the lady said about their leads. They also love to climb. DO NOT put anything near a fence or building. My dad found his on top of their barn one time and had to remove the items next to the barn and fence, because they will jump a fence if not tall enough. They are in fact very good escape artists. 😮 We still haven't figured out how some got out. Good luck with them, they are funny little critters and a joy to watch.😊

That's awesome compost for your next year garden that you're taking out of the chicken areas. Don't use it on fall gardens because it'll burn it up the chicken manure has too much nitrogen to use right away. But piled up in a compost pile getting rained 🌧️ on it'll be perfect for your Spring garden tilled in really well. 😁👍🏼

for the barn floor you can get rubber stall mats ,makes it so much easier to muck out and provides animals hoof relief. you can start a manure pile off the bank on the back of the barn, we did with our horses and reclaimed about 50 sq foot of creek bank.. it will compost down and you can use it in the garden as it seasons.

I had only Boer goats on 23 acres and never needed an electric fence, at night we hearded them into the barn to protect them and their kids from the foxes. Cheers Susanne

Go to a farm and garden supply and get a grounding Rod that you drive in the ground with a sledgehammer. Its a 6 foot long brass Rod and you drive it 5 foot deep. The Solar electric ⚡ fence charger has two places to connect 2 wires a Ground and a Hot wire. U Hook one connector wire to the Brass ground Rod you drove in the ground and the other connector you hook a wire on the charger to the positive & from there to your electric fence. I bought my solar fence charger at Tractor supply and It'll do 3.5 miles of electric ⚡ wire. You can get them to do different lengths, but take in consideration 3 strands of electric wire will take up 3.5 miles on a small piece of property probably 1.5 acres . So the more miles your solar fence charger is the more it will electrify. Unless you want to use your own electricity 🔌 Which will cost you to run it. So i suggest solar panel controlled fence charger which wont run up your light bill. Mine wasnt too expensive at Tractor supply for a 3.5 mile one, it comes with it's own solar panel to face it in a sunny area. But that's a smart idea going electric ⚡ fence because after the Goats 🐐 get zapped ⚡ they'll learn real fast stay away from that fence. I suggest get surveyors ribbon 🎗️ and tie a small piece on the sections of wire once they been zapped ⚡ and see that ribbon 🎗️ they'll avoid it like the plague 😂

Keep in mind the 8-foot-or-so plastic pipe on the tether idea so they don't get tangled. I've never personally tried it, but I think it would work. And keep the goats just enough away from each other so they can't tangle up each other :)

Hi Mel and Gary, I had a few goats a long time ago now. One would run to but me and was a great escape artist. It may sound cruel but he was a big old buck and very strong, he bowled and injured me a few times so I put a strong collar on him and a length of chain which was bolted to a round post that meant he had to drag it around, it stopped the escapes and I had a chance to fix fences etc with him in the area without being butted. You could say the old beast and I developed an understanding. Electric fences were annihilated by him and also the large kangaroos, you won’t have that latter problem though. You have predators to worry about which can do damage to fences etc whilst looking for a feed. Dave’s goats haven’t been too bad so I hope you have good luck with them.

I remember doing that with outside chicken coop for my uncle but the thing is the stuff was 3 1/2 inches 3 1/2 foot deep not 3 1/2 inches like you’re digging Stayed all winter chickens inside and they went outside and they were freeway birds they could go out anywhere on the 80 acre farm and free range bugs and everything else but you’re not doing with your chickens or your rabbits you need to put them on free range so they can go out in the open place and eat the bugs and the grass and everything else quit keeping them in cages that’s no good Thank you. Unattended goats manage to get stuck in a tree split trunks or flipped over on a rope will choke and die. I heard this common story after we found ours upside down almost dead. The collar was choking her. After that she was always very quiet. We think oxygen deprivation. We never left a goat alone on a collar rope again without supervision. We were told after that it’s s a bad idea, because goats will manage to find trouble with a rope on the neck. I just read it now and it’s not recommended. Better safe than sorry… supervise them if you do it!

I made a fire with the compressed chicken hay, it burned for 3 days through the rain! The whole Valley I live in was filled with thick white smoke

Dog run cables make great leads for goats if you're tying out. And I recamand using high voltage wire for electric fence if you deal with panthers and bears. My brother's favorite fencer was the Galager brand that he had set to keep the wild game out of his feilds were we kept all the live stock. Please not I may have misspelled the brand name of the fencer.

you can actually have them up under the electric lines in the hay and blackberries and wood line. just walk them to where you want the fences. they train pretty good if you are consistant.

After your goats become acclimated to the area, you may be able to let them roam free. They will come back when it is feeding time so you can lock them up at night for protection.

Make sure the teathers are METAL (i.e. Chain or cable - anything else and the goats will chew through them.

Love it when the kiddos get in there and help! Just one suggestion if it’s ok. When you’re doing chicken 💩 clean up, I’d wear some type of paper respirator. There’s alway the risk of breeder’s lung. I use to raise pigeons and always wore one.
