Looking at getting a M340d touring myself, after seeing the facelift in person it feel more like a downgrade. I much prefer the preface lift exterior & also the physical climate control buttons, after living with the new RS3 for a few months they have the same small gear selector as this and it isn't great, especially when performing a 3 point turn in a hurry you find yourself stubbing about trying to click it into gear. Even though the old gear selector is bigger and not as nice to look at it's more practical and safer to live with daily.

Just wanted to come in here and thank you again for one of the best reviews of this car here on TH-cam IMO. Today, I went ahead and placed an order on this car and I'm already so much looking forward to have it delivered to me!
It's still an absolute weapon, but I think the pre LCI was better inside and out, and I wonder if peak BMW Touring has just left the building... A mildly used pre LCI for £40k-45k might be the way to go now, guess it's time to window shop on Autotrader again😆
Makes me love my Touring even more. 😉 Even though it just a 318d. Is there any chance you might compare the 3series m340i Touring with the x3 m40i? (the diesel versions maybe as well), Joe? This would be great. Thank you for the video and enjoy the ride! 🍀😎👍🏽🙂
We need a campaign to bring back buttons, with all the safety BS pushed on us in all the wrong areas, to have to go through several screen entries for climate or what ever is not safe or effective! So looking forward to the next test. Cheers
I picked mine up last week too and haven't missed the buttons or the gear selector. Lots of comments on the internet are BS from people who don't drive the car.
I bought a 530d xdrive on your recommendation and just about to order a 340i touring, also on your recommendation. Either youre very good or im very gullible. Have to say the 530d was brilliant and still miss it. Great job.
Great video. Glad you still rate it so highly. I still prefer the pre-lci in pretty much all of the differences that have been made, But this is such a good car!
Starting to love my old Manual 235i with 40k on the clock even more after 5 years of owning it, after watching how much a new m lite cost. Iam keeping my 235i for 5 years more until the new m2 goes down in price on the used market new car prices are crazy 70k and you can pick up a 235i or 240i for 15 to 18k and go the same speed with a lite flash and a few mods. And boot space is plenty.
I have non run-flat Michelin P4s tyres on my M340i touring and your suspicions are correct, they transform the cars ride and handling, can't wait to see your first drive on the M3 Touring, that car with those tyres will be incredible!
I have the pre LCI 330i M Sport in Dravit Grey with Vernasca Cognac leather which is far better than the previous Dakota leather. The 1460 kg weight makes for beautiful handling and I use the traditional gear lever for regular gear changing in Sport mode. 340i is a nice car but with price rises and interior changes, it is hard to see the value. I will stick with mine.
If that crashed M140 is back on the road, that's crazy! That's a mega shunt! I'm sure Mat Armstrong has bought it for a weekend turn around! 😜 Love an M340 Touring. Good looking Estate and the B58 is a winning combo. 😘👌
Great review. I am just about to sign for a frozen tanzanite touring fully loaded and with m sports seats. Tony Lewis at Berry BMW is doing over £10k off list at present but be quick, only 2 build slots (1 after mine) for the rest of the year for the m340i touring. Would be happy to do a comparison with your M3 touring later on to see if it’s worth £25k more
I'd go for the D rather than the I. Every thing about this car is brilliant except for the dash board. Remember the clear simple twin dial of early 3 series. Surely that can be replicated digitally.
I have an M340i Touring. The tyre thing - hit a pot hole so had to get a new set as the run flats bubble very easily. PS4S do make the ride more compliant but the biggest difference is noise. It's so much quieter - especially on the motorway.
Would love to see a comparison video with current Generation M Lites , against maybe M3 Comp xDrive . The gap between M and M Lite, although there clearly is one , seems to be getting smaller .
Lovely car I think you kinda sum it up perfectly the 3 series touring is a great car , mine is a 320d m sport xdrive and every time I drive it the thought goes through my mind just how well it does everything and having driven loads of different cars, I never seem to get that in anything else they really are the ultimate driving machine great review 👍
Great review. I’m still loving my 2020 M340i. After some pot hole damage to my runflats, it was all the excuse I needed to bin them and switch to the Michelin PS4S’. It really is a great all-rounder.
Simpler option - AMG GLA45 For the SUV haters amongst you the viewers it’s immensely practical goes like a scalded cat when required. So easy to park at about 4.5m long. And sits wonderfully under the radar unlike the other “shouty” cars. BMW have to go a long way to recover their police “I’m on fire” debacle here in the UK….
can't get this in the US, so sad...I do drive a 330i MSport Touring that's fully loaded ... absolutely love it...if only I could upgrade to M340i or M3 touring without moving to Europe! Great vid!
You actually haven't used the Launch Control when you did the runs. You have to be in the Traction mode, not have it completely off. Should be even faster! :)
Surprised how loud and how nice this sounds, you really can't get much better of a do it all daily driver. I just wish the exterior options weren't so boring though, you can't get any greens or deep reds or browns or yellows. And as for the wheels you can only get diamond cut or black..

Great review! I currently have an M235i but thinking about replacing it. Was looking at the M3 Touring but now I'm thinking this might be the better option where I can get a sunroof, an electric towbar and be welcomed by an already warm coupe with no snow and ice to get rid of during the winter season. While at the same time saving a serious amount of money. Sure, not the same beast as the M3 of course but for my normal and daily driving, perfectly enough. May I ask what the name is of that app you used to clock 0-60?
I have laser lights on my pre face lift 330i M Sport and they are fantastic. I believe one of the reasons for the change is some states in USA banned them because they are so penetrating, up to 600 metres.
Geez.. the interior. The pre-LCI version had a nice interior with integrated screens. In this LCI version - well I don't know. I can even buy 2 tablets and place them on Renault Kangoo -> the result will be pretty much the same... (dunno, maybe it's just me)
I love the way you hammer the cars in your video's along those B roads, nice to see them driven the way they where designed to be. Would love to see Alpina B3 touring vs M3 touring...
Would love to hear your verdict on a 330i, Joe. We‘ve seen you with the 220i and 330e, but I‘d love your take on the 30i as i feel this may just about be the best version of the B48.
The main issue i have with all these modern cars having no option to manually shift with the gear selector is, when you wanna have some fun (aka spin it) you can't really upshift easily because you're moving the steering wheel so fast and in different ways you could easily miss the up paddle
You can manually shift it - you push the stick to the left then you can control up / downshifts from the stick or the paddles ... Or at least you can in my pre LCI m340i.
In BWMs, going back some time now, push the gear selector into 'D/S' over to the left (default postion is on the right, where D, P, N, R are) and you can then push it forwards and back to change up and down.
I’m guessing the folks replying to you haven’t watched the video yet. It’s a pretty big miss for the LCI I would say. I’m the same as you, if you are drifting you need the lever to shift, paddles on their own just aren’t as useful.
@@sfletcher83 this video is about the LCI version. It's actually specifically about that. So why have you said 'or at least you can in my pre-LCI'. Did it not occur to you as you wrote that to check if the LCIhad changed anything in that are, or even that watching THIS VIDEO might tell you? I hate it when people comment under videos to which they blatantly have paid little attention. You've not paid any attention to the person you're replying to either as you suggested paddles to a comment specifically highlighting when paddles moving with the wheel don't work well ergonomically.
I strongly agree with the OP. It isn't just going for spins. Tight very twisty backroads of the type we have in the UK, mid-corner preparation for prompt corner exit it's so much better to move the stick and not even worry about your smooth handling of the wheel. Feels much more assured than trying to guess where that paddle is. I wish you could blip downshift and do it all with the throttle. The irony is you CAN and it's well calibrated, but you can't do it like heel and toe in a manual because all throttle is blocked when you're on the brake. I would program it to block throttle that gives thrust (for safety, as currently) but allow sort of rev matching throttle signals to the auto gearbox that you want it to prep a lower gear freeing the resultant motive force as soon as you're off the brakes. Like virtual heel and toe for automatic. Darn over simplistic safety intervention - it's to stop stuck throttle accidents I think, but too crudely implemented.
Great video! Just what I was waiting for. 😎 PS: If you are interested you should maybe make a stand alone video on how to properly maintain a frozen colour. Maybe have a professional guest or something. This should be an interesting topic.
Such a shame BMW puts the Bridgestone Turanza on the M340i/d! It could be “excusable” on 18” rims, but it’s totally a nonsense on the 19”, since it’s highly likely that who specs them wants maximum performances and grip… and ride quality better than with a touring RFT tyre!! I happily own a pre LCI M340d and can’t wait to see your face to face comparison of the M340i and d in your next video!
This and the Audi RS3 Sportback are two forbidden fruits to us in the States. If either of them came to the US, it would be my next purchase. My dream dilemma would be which of the two to choose.
I wish we had these prices over here in NL, unfortunately the starting price of the M340i Touring is 92k EUR... Or about 81k GBP. 60k GBP gets you a 318i with a few options over here.
I was looking to order the new S5 Avant, but after seeing what's now on offer, was left thinking I don't think so. Terrible interior in the new Audi and the prices are taking the piss. Base model S5 Avant is £73k, so a Black Edition with options is easily going to nudge £85k. Then I looked at this BMW. It's got better performance, albeit marginally, than the new Audi. It's got a way better interior, it looks better and crucially it is way cheaper. Even with a heap of options added, it is still less than a base S5 Avant without any options. I need to drive the BMW, but it looks like the days of me buying Audis is over. Their finance rates are getting silly too.
I'm still holding-out for an M5 Touring 😁 Also, how good/bad are Michelin run-flats compared to other brands? Do some people prefer RFTs as maybe standards might feel too soft & bouncy less quick on the turn?
Really cannot get used to this display panel not being integrated into the shape of the Dash it. It makes me chuckle a bit because Audi and Merc had criticism for the tablet like screen, especially from BMW fans.
@joeachilles a family member purchased a m340d touring LCI and its actually uses less Co2 emissions then the petrol. I thought it would be chuggy like a tractor but it's really refined. Both great cars
Unreal bit of kit. Still not a fan of some of the LCI changes though. Cheap gear selector, no climate buttons, rear bumper trim.. Will be aiming for a pre-LCI version
I currently run the M340d which I have had for just over a year. It's a brilliant car, plenty of performance and much more refined than the 340d I owned previously for around four years. The refinement removes a little of the sheer driving appeal of the 340d which again was excellent, but overall fuel economy ( which I never reset ) over the period with the 340d was 36mpg compared to 40 mpg with the mild hybrid addition on the M340d. Overall the M340d is superb, comfortable and effortless on a long journey, brilliant to throw down a B road ~ 'head up display' essential to the package in my opinion.
Great video Joe. One question. I'm thinking of getting the M340d Touring New. Thought about putting the Schnitzer kit that you had on the M340i Touring a few years back. Apart from the engine up grade. Having a heavy diesel engine will it interfere with the handling and ruin the ride compared to the M340i you drove... Keep up the Great work.
The interior design of the facelift 3 Series contains features that fit in BMW's luxury line up (7, X7, IX, 5, etc.) I don't think they belong in a 3 Series, a car which is preferred by BMW fans to be conventional.
This is a strong contender to replace my S4. However just want to see what Audi bring to the table with the new S4, because the rumour is they are switching back to petrol with a 48v for Europe.
Here’s a question for you mate, i have a 340i tourer 6 months old and love it, i cannot afford the M3 tourer but should i order the new LCI 340i tourer or keep mine 🤔
When you say Frozen colours have more upkeep what do you mean? Ive found entirely the opposite. They dont show swirls, they dont require polishing and literally just require a ceramic coating and a wash. Of course, if you prang it somewhere its difficult/expensive to sort but general upkeep is minimal in comparison to normal paint.

I have a bmw m340d rental (long story). I’ve done 2800 miles in it now. Here is my comprehensive review: great car. Sounds crap.
I had an M340 xdrive. Amazing performance and economy in a luxury package. To me, it’s peak ICE for a daily driver.
We need a campaign to bring back buttons, with all the safety BS pushed on us in all the wrong areas, to have to go through several screen entries for climate or what ever is not safe or effective!
So looking forward to the next test.
Cheers
When did you take delivery of your LCI?
@@biddyboy1570 last week pops and me both
I picked mine up last week too and haven't missed the buttons or the gear selector. Lots of comments on the internet are BS from people who don't drive the car.
@@biddyboy1570 For you maybe, we are different. I'm 50 I want buttons and nobs.
Had to watch this one buddy… very good! See you soon.
Great review Joe. I am seriously considering an M340i Touring as an ultimate replacement for my Golf R Estate next year.
Beautiful car loving the LCI conversion of the front bumper, and specific interior changes. An absolute weapon 🚀
Great and sensible review. Definitely one for my wish list. All the best Brett.
Seems like they made M340 into a level of M550 and that’s as good as it gets.
I have non run-flat Michelin P4s tyres on my M340i touring and your suspicions are correct, they transform the cars ride and handling, can't wait to see your first drive on the M3 Touring, that car with those tyres will be incredible!
How does it change the ride? More comfort?
Superb Joe - best bud yet in my humble opinion - really well out together. November can’t come quick enough for me now!
Give the 340i a drive, I thought the same thing too.
Once you feel that beautiful B58 engine + ZF + XDrive…. There’s no going back
I have the pre facelift version. So happy to have real buttons. Epic car
If that crashed M140 is back on the road, that's crazy! That's a mega shunt! I'm sure Mat Armstrong has bought it for a weekend turn around! 😜
Love an M340 Touring. Good looking Estate and the B58 is a winning combo. 😘👌
A genuine Swiss Army Knife of a car! The best all-rounder on sale from BMW ... bar none.
Great review. I am just about to sign for a frozen tanzanite touring fully loaded and with m sports seats. Tony Lewis at Berry BMW is doing over £10k off list at present but be quick, only 2 build slots (1 after mine) for the rest of the year for the m340i touring. Would be happy to do a comparison with your M3 touring later on to see if it’s worth £25k more
Ahh amazing, sounds like an incredible spec! Thank you, will keep that in mind 👌
How long will you need to wait for yours Philip? I have one on order with Tony but not fully loaded 😢 I still went for the important options though 👍
I'd go for the D rather than the I. Every thing about this car is brilliant except for the dash board.
Remember the clear simple twin dial of early 3 series. Surely that can be replicated digitally.
Keep preaching the gospel of the estate, Reverend Joe!
I'm looking forward to the M340d comparison.
As an owner of various BMWs over the years Inc a lovely 2018 M sport 3 series Touring, £70k is insane. World’s gone mad I tell ya!
Perfect daily. Still prefer the old interior though.
Agreed 👍
Crazy that BMW are still hiding adaptive cruise behind the Tech Plus pack. I know they're tight but come on!
Oh man. I popped a tyre at 280 miles on the clock. Eek
Simpler option - AMG GLA45
For the SUV haters amongst you the viewers it’s immensely practical goes like a scalded cat when required. So easy to park at about 4.5m long. And sits wonderfully under the radar unlike the other “shouty” cars.
BMW have to go a long way to recover their police “I’m on fire” debacle here in the UK….
I truly love this car, great video mate! ❤
can't get this in the US, so sad...I do drive a 330i MSport Touring that's fully loaded ... absolutely love it...if only I could upgrade to M340i or M3 touring without moving to Europe! Great vid!
You actually haven't used the Launch Control when you did the runs. You have to be in the Traction mode, not have it completely off. Should be even faster! :)
10k more would get you a Macan GTS which would be cheaper monthly’s due to residuals… I know prices are going up but it’s crazy!
Great video as ever, looking forward to the diesel comparison video
Cracking, enjoyable and informative as ever Joe - hope you are well chappy x
M340i VS M340D drag race and roll race pls
Surprised how loud and how nice this sounds, you really can't get much better of a do it all daily driver. I just wish the exterior options weren't so boring though, you can't get any greens or deep reds or browns or yellows. And as for the wheels you can only get diamond cut or black..
Really prefer the old dash…
Can't wait for that comparison video Joe.
I can't make my mind up. M340i or m340d
🤯🤯
Diesel m340 discontinued
@@vicjones3992 Yeah right...lol
@@lucifer1397340d is being discontinued in the U.K. from June 2024
Can't wait for the comparison!
That's crazy re: laser lights , I have them on an "ordinary": 320 .I think I would still swap it for a M340i though , just ;)
😉
Double Yes!!!! a B3 touring Vs it's M-light counterpart or even M3 touring would be beyond wonderful. Joe if your read this 😂
Would love to hear your verdict on a 330i, Joe. We‘ve seen you with the 220i and 330e, but I‘d love your take on the 30i as i feel this may just about be the best version of the B48.
You're out of luck. G20/G21 330i not in production anymore from Apr 2023.
Great vid as always. Looking forward to the comparison video!
Lovely bit of kit ! Very nice.
This and the Audi RS3 Sportback are two forbidden fruits to us in the States. If either of them came to the US, it would be my next purchase. My dream dilemma would be which of the two to choose.
Amazing car! saw a very similar one here in Madrid last week
I'm still holding-out for an M5 Touring 😁
Also, how good/bad are Michelin run-flats compared to other brands? Do some people prefer RFTs as maybe standards might feel too soft & bouncy less quick on the turn?
All manufacturers are having a laugh
Gone up £10k in 3 years
Odd my salary hasn't moved for the last 5 years
Bmw is the best 🤳🏾🏁🏁
First world problem but I would drive this instead of my X3 M40i. BMW Canada if you are reading this, let's make it happen!
👌👌
Another great video, Joe
Really cannot get used to this display panel not being integrated into the shape of the Dash it. It makes me chuckle a bit because Audi and Merc had criticism for the tablet like screen, especially from BMW fans.
Great car, but poor value for money at present. WISH the world hadn't demonised diesel so much because I would now own a 40d otherwise.
Sure is a pity!
But you can buy an m340d so how did the consensus regarding diesel stop you buying one?
@@peterwatson9047 worried about resale value and the madness of politicians.
@@danielbevan9024 There’s always a GFV guaranteed future value compare it to the petrol variant to see the difference in 3/4 years…
@joeachilles a family member purchased a m340d touring LCI and its actually uses less Co2 emissions then the petrol. I thought it would be chuggy like a tractor but it's really refined. Both great cars
Unreal bit of kit. Still not a fan of some of the LCI changes though. Cheap gear selector, no climate buttons, rear bumper trim.. Will be aiming for a pre-LCI version
hey Joe, great vid - how long until the M3 Touring arrives? That's the 'reveal vid' we're all waiting for.......
Gong Hei Fat Choi 🎉Joe still loving my M5 comp have 3500 in one month love it wish they did massage seats in this touring 😔 so good for long journeys
Beautiful! Always wanted the M5, but have a family now so I’m in search for something super fast, with a massive boot
Thank you, Joe.
That plastic control panel has no place in a £60k car. Especially considering the £10k price increase.
M340d has been discontinued
The interior design of the facelift 3 Series contains features that fit in BMW's luxury line up (7, X7, IX, 5, etc.)
I don't think they belong in a 3 Series, a car which is preferred by BMW fans to be conventional.
Does Harry M know you are using test track ha-ha...good review, you been on the bike much
Question is what would you lose from the spec to get the sport seats without the price increasing even further
Tow bar?
This with a stage 1 will be beautiful, especially if you get it after a few years BMW approved used
Stage 34 it for the real gainz
Such a shame we don’t get this in the USA
£60k for a 318d front grille ! The former bronze grille with matching wing mirrors was classy. This front end is a backward step for sure.
That motor is butter! The only issue I have with that car is the size. But that's why god made the 2 series.
Hey. Are you gonna drive the rwd m240i?
