      True, but for years, this felt like it was Nolan’s Bond. And when I saw it in theaters, as a 14 year old, I expected something Bond-like based on the posters but got something completely different.

    Honestly, this would be a dream. I absolutely love Christopher Nolan and Inception is one of my favourite films ever made (though I think Tenet has more merit as Nolan’s “Bond”). Also, this film is actually about filmmaking if you think about it.

      The problem with Tenet as any sort of template for a Nolan Bond is that the protagonist is so bland and generic you might as well call him Protagonist.

    6:19 To add to your list:
    • Paprika: yes, it’s a bit passé by this point to compare Inception with Paprika, but Paprika does nail that utter random surreality of dreams. Yes, its plot also lacks that meandering aimlessness of a real dream, but, in its favour, it does have dancing fridges and mailboxes. (Plus it has a small From Russia with Love reference.)
    • Pretty much the entire David Lynch filmography (sans The Straight Story). In particular, something like the Red Room scenes in Twin Peaks capture that off-kilter nature of dreams. The relationship between dreams and reality is a favourite theme of his.
    • The Avengers (the British TV show): while the earlier years were pretty down-to-Earth, the Emma Peel years got pretty surreal at times. The fact that the show never used background extras just adds to the dream-like quality. If you’re looking for good Christmas watching in the coming days, I recommend the Inception-esque Series 4 episode ‘Too Many Christmas Trees’, in which the villains try to break into Steed’s mind to steal some secret plans only he knows. Except, unlike in Inception, they keep giving him nightmares about Father Christmas.
    • Look Around You: the thing about dreams is that often completely bizarre things will happen, but you don’t think it strange at all. Utterly bizarre things being treated as if they’re 100% normal is the backbone of this show’s comedy. I know you could say that about a lot of comedies, but LAY feels very fever-dreamish at points.

      What Dreams May Come. An overlooked Robin Williams movie literally set in a dreamworld - nowhere near as cosy as that sounds and definitely not a comedy, but at times beautiful and so dreamlike as to invoke deja vu. I'd also recommend Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind as the most dream-esque of movies. Everybody's gotta learn sometime;)

    I would say that Tenet was more Nolan's Bond than Inception. Tenet is structured very much like a Bond movie - action sequence to establish the story at the beginning, the antagonist is briefed by an M like character and given his mission, teamed up with a ally nation agent, set against a scene chewing villain planning to wipe out the planet, sets out to help a female character in peril and culminates in a massive action set piece.

    As for the whole "Bond being influenced by Batman", I would argue that Batman is more influenced by Bond in a lot of ways as many notable addition to the Batman lore were influenced by Bond films mainly the villains Ra's and Talia Al Ghul in which their creator claims "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" influenced his creations of those characters.
    While it is true that Sam Mendes has cited "The Dark Knight" as an influence on "Skyfall", I never watch "Skyfall" and think to myself that I would rather watch "The Dark Knight" instead as the two are very different films in terms of story and even how things end for Batman and Bond. Plus it is also worth pointing out that "The Dark Knight" or just Nolan's Batman in general were influenced by Bond films whether it is Lucius Fox scenes being very similar to the Q scenes, Joker's knife shoe being as reference to "From Russia with Love", the sky hook scene being a reference to "Thunderball" and even the Joker's Glasgow smile disfigurement being a nice reference to the Bond villain facial scarring trope.
    Let's just say, it makes sense to me for a Bond film to take influence from "The Dark Knight" as it comes off as the series taking back what is theirs and there have been films before "The Dark Knight".
    Also I can't be the only one who sees the similarities between "The World Is Not Enough" and "The Dark Knight Rises"? Let me list them to give you a clear idea on how that film is somewhat of a remake of “The World Is Not Enough”:
    1) 007/James Bond and Bruce Wayne/Batman = Both playboy like characters with code names a ton of gadgets and in both films the two characters go through some sort of injury.
    2) M and Jim Gordon = Both older authority figures who usually assign the main hero the mission.
    3) Q and Lucius Fox = Both guys that supply the gadgets.
    4) Renard and Bane = Both powerful bald villains with something that isn't quite human about them. While also being guys who we think are main villains, but is in fact in leagues with someone else.
    5) Elektra King and Miranda Tate = Both female character who the main character "falls for" and have issues with their fathers, but there is more to these people than meets the eye as SPOILERS they are partners with the main villain of the film.
    6) Finally the climaxes to both films involve a nuclear MacGuffin.

    Nolan stated OHMSS as his favourite Bond film and a key influence on this film - do you think that helped in the shifting perception of OHMSS from a forgotten curio to one of the best (if not the best) in the series? Not saying that was the only reason why consensus shifted on OHMSS, but it certainly would help a film to have a big name director singing its praises. And this is around the time that OHMSS was having its big resurgence.

Edgar Wright is definitely edging the rest out though, Last Night in Soho was stellar and continued his habit of including Bond references in his movies (The huge Thunderball poster, past actors in Dame Diana Rigg and Margaret Nolan, Sandy ordering a Vesper and even some John Barry music!)

    Inception is hands down my favorite Nolan film ever. I get why The Dark Knight is considered that title, but Inception is more original, more resonating, and more rewatchable. Also both Ellen (Elliott) Page and Marion Cotilliad are so underrated in this.

    • @MCMIVC
      @MCMIVC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assume you probably meant no harm, but just a heads up; The correct and respectfull way to write it is just "Elliott Page", and to not include the old name, refered to as "deadname" in the trans community. Even when refering to work made while still going by the old name.
      That being said, I wholeheartedly agree on everything you said about the film!

      @johnstrawb3521 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MCMIVC The correct and respectful thing to do is not correct other people in accordance with how you want them to write. Listing Page by his name as of Inception's release is completely acceptable. Listing his current name as well is indeed respectful. Btw, it's fine for the trans community to refer to Ellen Page as a "deadname," but not all trans people feel identically (an attribution that is invariably the foundation of racism, classism, etc), and we haven't consulted Page on how he feels, either. In addition no one is obliged to obscure meaning and history in order to make a hypothetical group to whom you've already misattributed universal feelings, feel better.

  • @jamesatkinsonja

    8:38 I think that's a consequence of Christopher Nolan being his own script writer [as even his brother Jonathan, who used to co-write with him, has moved on now a days]. Tenet badly needed some humor among the dry exposition which another writer could have delivered but Nolan has earned the right not to have his work interfered with given his track record in fairness.

    • @johnstrawb3521
      @johnstrawb3521 ปีที่แล้ว

      He clearly hasn't. Nolan is not even an average screenwriter. He's almost James Cameron-level awful when left to himself. That was clear before Inception.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnstrawb3521 Cameron wrote Aliens and The Abyss solo in his earlier career and Nolan gets the sole screenplay credit for 'Momento' [with brother Jonathan only being credited for the story]. If you've made massive hit films you are in the position to do whatever you want-Inception was Nolan's reward for the success of Dark Knight [few directors could get a $160 million film made which isn't related to a franchise back in 2010 let alone now] like Avatar was for Cameron's Titanic success [again, a $237 million budget for something which was a pre-existing property is virtually impossible otherwise] and his deal for Oppenheimer basically met all his demands [such as a $100 million marketing budget, 20% of the gross profit and even preventing other Universal films being released around it]. If your an elite directors, you have earned the right through your track record to have your work untouched [like a Nolan or Tarantino] or take as long as you want making it [like a Cameron or Kubrick]. even if collaboration might improve the script.

    Hey, it's one of my favourite films! Whoo! The cast is perfect here, with Marion Cottiard as an absolute standout for me. She would've been brilliant in a Brosnan Bond movie, but I digress. The action is so memorable, I adore the whole hallway scene, Zimmer's score is brilliant, and the ending still gets me. Is he still dreaming, isn't he, and then the smash cut to black. So good.
    I agree with you in saying that Tenet is probably the Nolan film that feels more like the typical Bond film with suave acting, the suits and the landscape, but the heist element of Inception + the action set pieces here are more what I'd expect Nolan to do with a Bond film plot-wise.

    Great job as usual, sir! While I end up agreeing with you only about 60% of the time, I truly appreciate your genuine love of the character & franchise. I also dig your reviews of non-Bond films featuring Bond actors, as well as movies in the general "espionage" genre... And so I have a candidate for you: WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL (1971), which is available for free, in HD, on TH-cam. A very young Anthony Hopkins takes a stab at playing a James Bond-type character, in this case Commander Philip Calvert of the Royal Navy -- an "underwater commando" for the British Secret Service. The film trots out a number of Bond tropes, only on a much smaller budget and with less-than-exotic locales (namely the dour, craggy coast of Scotland). Instead of comedy relief in the form of a cranky Q, the film's fussy M-type character (Robert Morley) is the one played for laughs. Hopkins is game and gives it a good shot, but just doesn't quite cut it as the square-jawed action hero. FYI: I believe an action set-piece from this film was "borrowed" ten years later by the writers of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. (Calvert, in scuba gear, explores the wreck of a sunken ship, only to be attacked by a bad guy wearing deep-sea diving gear -- the kind with a huge round helmet & weighted boots.)

      It's one of his worst films. Even if you can decipher the needlessly convoluted plot that requires a dump truck of expository dialogue, you still have the shallow characters and a totally unconvincing romance.
      Not saying this about you but I think people praise films like Inception and Tenet because they don't want to appear foolish. A great film is not needlessly complicated. A great film makes you feel before it forces you think about what is going on. Tarvkovsky, Bergman, Sharunas Bartas, David Lynch, those are filmmakers that make you feel things. Nolan just crafts plot machines, he doesn't make films.

    I just feel like it's the wrong time for a Nolan directed Bond film. He would probably want full creative control and the opportunity to start an era with his own actor and style which means that Bond 26 would be the one to give him. However, although I love the Craig era, we've just been through 5 films and 15 years of Nolan and Bourne inspired Bond films. Bringing Nolan now would be threading water.
    I think we need a somewhat lighter Bond to follow Craig, if any of the big current directors should get to set the tone with the next one I would want Edgar Wright and not Nolan. Although personally, I want Martin Campbell to kick off the next era without Purvis and Wade (maybe just Phoebe Waller-Bridge or her alongside a new writing partner).

    The only scenario I'd say Nolan would be suited doing a Bond film is if it was consciously stripped back, I suppose similar to the concept that Danny Boyle had before stepping back from No Time To Die. Nolan's Neo-noir films are excellent (Memento, Insomnia, Following, even Batman Begins and to an extent The Dark Knight, as much as I have problems with that film sometimes) but I find the larger his ideas/films are the more he tends to slip into problems like plot contrivances, a lack of interesting characters, sound design problems etc.

    I liked Inception when I watched it but have no real desire to watch it again. I have come to like Nolan'a movies less and less with every movie I have seen from him since The Dark Knight (which I already didn't like as much as so many other people did). Part of it might very well be that detachment from emotion that you mentioned here. Kubrick is a good comparison although I think that Kubrick was a filmmaker of a higher rank than Nolan. Even if you don't understand everything in Kubrick movie, you just know that Kubrick knew very well what he was doing and why. I don't get that feeling with Nolan. With him I get the feeling that he wants to be smarter than the movie actually is. He could still be an interesting choice for a Bond movie. Good or bad, it would probably be a Bond movie unlike any other.
    Edit: sorry, for going off on a tangent about Nolan.

    While I love Inception and have a lot of respect for Nolan as a filmmaker I don't think he and Bond are a good match right now, if the producers could have gotten him for Die Another Day or Casino Royale it would have been a different story.

    it wasnt an original concept paprika anime did it first, alot of shots were borrowed from the anime film, i actually read the book and watched the anime, and in the book they have a dream sequence similar to dr no, he even mentions that film, where the girl sings a song, and the guy comes out of the bushes, cause they were gonna make a live action back then but decided not to since inception followed similar aspects, but yes this is a great film, i had to watch it about 3 times to understand and talk with friends to really understand it, yes there is an OHMSS reference in the snow shootout, are you gonna review TENET? or the dark knight series, also do you know micheal g wilson dad was the first batman, of the 40s serials, so it would have been cool if Nolan, put him as an extra, but then i guess it would be to bond since, bond has him in hitchcock type roles. But i mean it makes sense since his dad was the first batman, he didnt want ben Affleck ( my favorite batman better than bale, keaton and the others in my opinion), to come to the premere since he was dating ana de armas at the time, so he didnt want the attention to go to him at the bond premere since i didnt really understand since that had jason aquaman and other hollywood ellites, also think jay lo would make a great catwoman, if affleck ever wants to put the cape back on and make a movie, now that micheal g wilson i think retired maybe he will do cameos in the batman films, like you said the nolan dark knight trilogy inspired craig run of films, but also the past bond movies before craigs inspired his trilogy so its funny how things work out, and brosnan was in the running to play batman in 89 before keaton since he was good friends with the director of batman he worked on a movie with him. But didnt take it i forgot his explanation.

    One of the reasons I adore this movie is that for all its cleverness, it’s not trying to trick the audience. It’s attitude is much more inclusive in that it wants the audience to be following along...like “we’re doing cool things with cool concepts, let’s do them together” rather than trying to leave the audience confused. It very much wants the audience to be along for the ride and engaged with its concepts, it’s never trying to be cleverer than the audience.
