Who doesn’t love Tom & Jerry?
I recently read a book called "Barbie Talks" which is about 2 female Mattel employees in the 1960s. They worked on many toy projects, including the Tom & Jerry doll. The recording session was hilarious apparently. In addition to all the normal lines, Arte Johnson kept ad libbing rude stuff. They took all the dodgy lines and put them on a separate record, then made "dirty dolls" as Xmas presents!! Some of the lines were - "pull that string like that again and I'll bite your ass!", "Dis mouse shits in my hand one more time, I'm not gonna talk to him!" "Sure I talk, what did you expect me to do, fart?" Elliott Handler thought it was funny and commissioned about 20 of these "dirty dolls" for the annual Toy Fair!!

Mel Blanc is the one you're thinking of, and the yells you hear in the cartoon shorts were done by William Hannah, one of the original creators of Tom and Jerry.

When I was a kid, my brothers and I got 3 of these puppets for Christmas. Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, and Porky Pig. Like you said they had a voice box that said a limited amount of random phrases when you pulled the string. They were typically phrases you would hear in their cartoons. Bugs would say "What's up Doc?", Porky "That's all Folks" etc.. The Thing with "Tom and Jerry" is that, yes the puppet did have a voice box. At the time Tom and Jerry did not talk in their cartoons.

It wasn't Mel Blanc who did Tom's voice. It was done by Arte Johnson. And Jerry's voice is by Walker Edmiston.

I just got Tom missing whiskers and Jerry,ear has tiny piece missing had 4 holes and seam undone,Head was hanging from a few threads looks mint now put in washer and,sewed head back on and all the holes sown I got it for 2dollars and turned trash to treasure

I was given Tom and Jerry puppet as a very young child. I brought them with me to a picnic at my Dad’s work because we were inseparable and sadly I accidentally left it at the swing set. I went back to get it and it was no longer there. I would love to be reunited with Tom and Jerry puppet at some point. I will be 60 years old next year. Do you know someone who has this puppet in working order? Thanks much.

Yup. And at the time this was made, Mattel was making See N Say. And Paul Frees was the voice of the farmer See N Say classic: "The Farmer Says!" And June Foray was the Bee in The Bee Says. The Bee Says was about the letters of the alphabet. Like "The Cat starts with C". Too bad they never made a Tom and Jerry See N Say. I love See N Say. I hope somebody restores Snoopy Says.

Fun facts: Tom and Jerry are currently owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment through Turner Entertainment Co. (pre-May 1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer library). Turner acquired MGM/UA in 1985 and renamed as MGM Entertainment Co., since then, Turner managed to distribute the vast majority of the pre-May 1986 MGM library that Turner has and in 1996, Turner Broadcasting was merged with TimeWarner (now WarnerMedia). Since then, WB currently owns Tom and Jerry and other classic MGM Cartoon characters. Since July 1, 2020, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (formerly Warner Home Video) now officially distributed under license from MGM Home Entertainment since WB already owns and distributes MGM's pre-May 1986 library through their ownership of Turner Entertainment Co., replacing Buena Vista Home Entertainment (20th Century Studios Home Entertainment).

Yep, he was known as the man of 1,000 voices. Most cartoon characters from that era were voiced by him.

Although many supporting and minor characters speak,Tom and Jerry rarely do so themselves. Tom, most famously, sings while wooing female cats; for example, Tom sings Louis Jordan's "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" in the 1946 short Solid Serenade - Google Search Result

I’m speculating, but it could be due to marketing reasons or budgeting. Perhaps a blue color would have been more attractive to boys instead of a bland grey?
