I have no singing voice, no talent, no time to learn, not even time to use all the cool musical tools I have purchased over the last 40 years of using MIDI and computers with synths. But your tool is so impressive and your delivery and teaching ability so great that I sit and watch every video - impressed as an electronics & software engineer geek AND learn-it-all even if I can’t use it hobbyist. Thank you.
These videos are absolutely brilliant. Ive had melodyne studio since the original cakewalk days, and watching the people who invent the tools actually use them makes your company a hero and your user base loyal forever.
Did not know about that fade-curve option, that's great! Also, when you chose not to macro level-down the loud notes, I was happy because it was exactly my intuition too.
I've been using Melodyne since 2012 and I thought I knew everything there was to know. You've just made me say to myself, "Why didn't I think of that?" Thank you.
Wow Rich! This is great and it will be a huge time saver for me. I’ve used clip gain extensively in the past. This should speed my vocal processing up quite a bit.
You are a wise "Melodyner" (maybe the wisest), man! I don't use the software not very much because due to my ignorance the results were quite unpleasant. But slowly thanks to your videos I am loving Melodyne more and more!
Thanks for your comment. A lot of what you decide to do as an audio engineer comes down to your personal taste. If you feel a vocal part doesn’t need any editing, don’t touch it. Another engineer might do the opposite. Either way, whenever you need a tool to edit your vocals, Melodyne will be there for you. 🙂
@celemony I am struggling with some vocal tracks when I try to harmonize it, and even a short interval like a minor third sounds too artificial, no matter how much I use every trick available.
Great video Rich, thank you. One question:- if I’m running studio, would the dynamic range adjustment essentially do the same job as the macro you showed at the beginning (ie highest & lowest note sliders?). If so, which would you use in preference? Thanks, Bill Hester
Hi, I love the feature and the video you made. Probably I am doing something wrong regarding deselecting the blob that is mostly a consonant or it can be a left over breath. When I select the note and I use the Command key the whole note get deselected and not that blob that is attached to the note as I see in the video. Indeed when I use the macro leveler then the consonants become very loud because it pulls the volume up. What am I forgetting? 🙂
I was hoping for a more automated "vocal rider" but the technique shown doesn't seem to be better than manual riding. I think it would be more useful if Melodyne offered a way to not vocal ride sibilants, and to offer a threshold for sounds that are too low in volume to not be effected (to avoid raising bleed and breath, for example). I also wish there was a lot more to say about about the actual dynamic tools in Melodyne, which I always forget are there. Still one of I've my most used plugins for many reasons.
While this is a fantastic tool, I honestly preferred that she went a bit quiet at the second part (before melodyne processing). Sounds more 'real' lol. This vocal isn't generic mainstream pop where every word needs to be super audible and have almost 0 dynamics.
Not necessarily. Depending on your song and how off the singer is, you can set a pitch grid to either chromatic or the key of your song or chord notes. Also, if you prefer, you can disable the grid completely and just tune by ear.
I had to stop and restart the video 4 times to see where the leveler macro is. You just zoomed up and clicked on it and I did not see the mouse move. I completely lost the the thread of what you were trying to do. I have been watching all your videos because, even though I have been subscribed to Studio for years, I never use it. It just seems too complicated and I can never seem to figure out what to do when I want to do something.
Then apparently you have a note selected when you paste, in which case Melodyne will replace that note and adapt the length accordingly. If you need assistance, our support guys will be there to help: www.celemony.com/support
Honestly the dynamics of the example presented sound like misuse of a compressor. Especially the attack stage of the envelope. You can get better results with compression if you know what you're doing. Having said that, it looks like a unique tool for the job with which you can tweak vocal dynamics in a different way from what's out there and hopefully find new mixing techniques. I think I'll check it out.
I agree with @bigstewdio...Who knew? Not me either. This is such a good video; so well explained. I missed you last month when you were in Toronto; didn't register in time; should have known better. I use the Leveler macro all the time. One of the ways I use it is to even out the choral voices (oohs and aahs), but I only go about halfway on each slider. When I first started with it (when it first came out), I thought I'd heard some artifacts when moving the sliders all the way on both sides. It made me worried that I shouldn't use it 100% on both sides. Now I'm thinking that it may have been the file. So I'm going to start using it fully on both sides now. Although I find that halfway on both sides works; bring lower things up to a point and then louder things down to a point; certainly sounds better. If there's any reason why I shouldn't do it this way, let me know what I'm missing. Now to get into the Amplitude Transition Tool. Thanks for everything.
@@celemony Thank you for your quick response. But I was still concerned as to why I would get artifacts/noise when doing the 100% leveler, so I watched your video again and found the problem. I was selecting the whole line and 'not' unselecting the breathes or other non-note parts of the line. These videos are so important to understand the details. Thank again.
0:40 "This is done currently with clip gain and automation". That's a pretty deceiving statement. Many vocal riding plugins exist including the one in iZotope Nectar and Waves Vocal Rider.
Rich actually says „Some of this...”, and indeed most engineers probably still use clip gain or automation for this task. But whatever tool works best for you.
Disappointed, thought it was going to show a way to select a vocal and have melodyne automatically level it out to the users taste. It's 2024, should be easier than this, shouldn't it?🤔
That’s exactly what Melodyne does. It automatically levels out the vocals for you, and your “taste” is defined by the sliders in the Leveling macro. 🙂 The only thing you have to do is to tell Melodyne what your taste is...

Exactly!
I agree completely!

Thanks a lot. You should really spend some more time making music, though. You don’t know what you’re missing. 🙂
These videos are absolutely brilliant. Ive had melodyne studio since the original cakewalk days, and watching the people who invent the tools actually use them makes your company a hero and your user base loyal forever.
Thank you so much!
You are the best. No matter how many years I’ve been using melodyne, i always see something new in your videos that I can use immediately!
Always happy to teach new Melodyne tricks. 🙂 Thanks for watching!
This man is without any doubt one of the most clear and effective teacher out there. Thank you so much, I appreciate your calm and precision.
Thanks for the compliment! 🙂
fantastic tutorial, thank you. After 5 years im still learning new things about Melodyne, I love it!
Thanks, Samuel!
What great tips! The copy and paste is brilliant. Thank you!
Thank you for continuing to educate me.
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos. Straight and to the point. I learn something new every time.
No matter how long I have been using the tool, you always teach me something new. Thank you!
I really appreciate these videos that teach advanced techniques in Melodyne. Thanks!
Thanks, your very welcome!
Useful! Thanks for continuing to teach us all these tips.
So helpful! Thanks. This will bring a more professional quality to my home recordings.

I’ve been doing this for years 💯💯💯.
Faster and easier than “clip gain”.

Technical note - when you're demonstrating the macro controls, they were offscreen due to cropping. 😕

They should make a section of chapters in Spanish. but with someone who explains just like the great Rich Crescenti.

Do you have to set it in the key to your guitar/songs to keep singing in tune?
Not necessarily. Depending on your song and how off the singer is, you can set a pitch grid to either chromatic or the key of your song or chord notes. Also, if you prefer, you can disable the grid completely and just tune by ear.
when you touch a blob Melodyne shows you which note it is! HOW CAN I GET THAT!!??
Go to “Options” > “Note Editor” > “Show Blob Info”.

great tips! The copy paste in my Melodyne doesn't copy the note exactly. It stretches it and makes it out of sync
