The World Parkinson Congress provides an international forum for dialogue on the latest scientific discoveries, medical practices, and caregiver initiatives related to Parkinson’s disease.
The Congress brings together physicians, neuroscientists, a broad range of other health professionals, care partners, and people with PD (PwPs) for a unique and inspiring experience. Cross pollinating members of the community is important in the effort to expedite the discovery of a cure and cultivate best treatment practices for this devastating disease.
The idea for the Congress came from a meeting held in 2002 in Washington, DC with Dr. Elias Zerhouni, the then head of the National Institutes of Health, who suggested the community create a meeting inclusive of all those touched by Parkinson's.
That idea was carried forward by Mr. Robin Elliott, President of the US-based Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) who asked Dr. Stanley Fahn, one of the most recognized Parkinsonologist in the world, to help launch the World Parkinson Congresses.
In 2004, Dr. Fahn launched the World Parkinson Coalition Inc, the organization behind each Congress, and went on to organize the first three Congresses before stepping down as President in 2013. Under Dr. Fahn’s guidance, with over one hundred colleagues, researchers, people with Parkinson’s and advocates in the field, the first WPC was launched in 2006 in Washington, DC., followed by the WPC 2010 in Glasgow, UK and most recently the WPC 2013 in Montreal, Canada.
Plans are now underway for the 5th World Parkinson Congress (WPC 2019), to be held in Kyoto, Japan from June 4 - 7, 2019.
Everyone in the community who is touched by Parkinson’s, whether a patient, researcher, family member, clinician, nurse, or rehab specialist is welcome to attend this 100% inclusive Congress.
    Mission
To provide an international forum to learn about the latest scientific discoveries, medical practices, caregiver initiatives and advocacy work related to Parkinson's disease. By bringing physicians, scientists, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, caregivers and people with Parkinson's disease together, each Congress allows for a worldwide dialogue to help expedite the discovery of a cure and best treatment practices for this devastating disease.
The official language of the Congress is English. World Parkinson Congresses are open to citizens of ALL countries.
