Something is indeed missing in this picture. He is giving advice to people not to go to Iran due to the unstable political climate - which is a valid point. However, for someone who has actually travelled to Iran, Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries, he cannot pass himself as a naive person. Therefore, he was well aware of all the risks before the travelled. The question is, why did he travel to those countries to begin with, when there was a perfect, less risky, and far more rational alternatives available? He responds by saying he went to learn the language. The experts in the U.S government specialising in Persian go to Tajikistan to learn the language, precisely because of such incalculable risks! I'm sorry, he is suspicious to say the least, especially, given his linguistics expertise and the countries he has visited. The new US wavier legislation requires those who have travelled to such countries to apply for visa - not because they are paranoid or have delusional world view (although the latter maybe true). It has been passed in order to respond to the growing threat.
Also, he kept talking about the strange mindset of his interrogators. Whilst no one should dismiss Iran's poor human right record, there is perfect and rational explanation for their excessive paranoia - 1953 coup of democratically elected Prime Minister Mossadegh. Was not aware of this, did he knew nothing of Iran's past? Was he not aware of the 1979 Islamic Revolution? Was he not aware of the assassination of their nuclear scientists? Of course he was! Which is why this whole thing doesn't make sense. His case was suspicious to say the very least and warranted detention for questioning. However, the issue of his mistreatment when captured is entirely a different matter.

+radavar He's earned it. The lad is well trained in what to say too. He must have gone to check layouts of the jails the way he was describing the layouts.

I can't believe him, even dual national Iranians try not to travel Iran unless they have to, and he traveled to Iran just for learning Farsi ...we have hundred thousands of Farsi speaking people in States! I can give him dozen of good Farsi schools in LA and Washington DC even Boston ....there is something wrong here...?!?!!?

+Afshin D The problem here is that he looks so guilty that I am quite convinced on his innoncence.
(P.S. When TRUMP becomes president, he will deal with IRAN, thats why I am voting for him)
