    Thank you for the review. I just started looking at producing hardwood pegs for a timber frame project this summer and found your video. I see Lee Valley is out of stock until July, I guess I'll keep making them on the table saw for now.

    I enjoyed that review very much...a different kind of wood turning but you still made some shavings!! I might have to buy a set now, very handy.

    I've been thinking of getting into making my own dowels for my woodworking shop here in Thunder Bay Ontario. And you are right, you are NOT going to find purpleheart dowels in the stores around here. I use a lot of purpleheart as it is and making dowels would be a great use of some of the offcuts.
    Might have to do another Lee Valley order soon. Ordered some stuff from this just this morning.

    Excellent review. Will it cut a curved dowel if you start with a curved blank. Interested in it for making curved spindles for chair back rest so the curve would be very minimal. Thank you!

    Now that you've had it for a while, how long of a dowel can you make with it, and do you think using a power drill at a higher speed would give a better finish?

    • @frenchriversprings
      @frenchriversprings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only did 4’ the longest but I can’t see why I shouldn’t be able to do 10’ long. I don’t think there is any advantage to a high speed drill I get a really nice finish with my battery drill.

      @@frenchriversprings , I so wish they would make one for doing inch and ahalf dowels. Thanks

    Would it be better to do a first pass at a larger size and a second final pass? is there a speed that works best to turn the wood?

    This is a great tool.I bought this for making arrow shafts to cut the cost (12 shafts for 40$)now i can make 32 shafts out of Alaskan cedar for 20$. the only negative side of using this tool is that it is very tricky to get the exact final size .in the instructions ,it does not tell you that you need to PUSH with some weight so that when the final cut passes thru the end bushing,the wood compresses to the right size and comes out with a gloss finish.very well made tool but i would have liked to have some engraved graduations and a marker.its pretty hard to set the tool with nothing to base your ( 0 ) to.

      Y’a it takes a while to set up. That’s why if I have dowels to make, I will do a whole bunch of them.

      So you’re saying adjust the knives to finish cut slightly over sized (like a 32nd or so) and then let the final bushing reduce it to finial size?
      I could see that working on your cedar arrows but do you think this would be effective on something like oak, hickory, or ash?
